Fantastic Voyage (Original screenplay for the 1966 film)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1966. Final Script for the 1966 film, "Fantastic Voyage," directed by Richard Fleischer, written for the screen by Harry Kleiner, and starring Raquel Welch, Edmond O'Brien, and Donald Pleasance. & & One of the seminal science fiction films of the 1960s, novelized the same year by Isaac Asimov and published by Houghton Mifflin. Stephen Boyd heads a team of scientists sent on a bizarre experimental mission in which, through a revolutionary and as-yet untested process, the scientists and their special motorized vehicle are miniaturized and then injected into the blood stream of a scientist who is near death. Their mission is to relieve a blood clot caused by an assassination attempt. The film's Oscar-winning visual effects (by Art Cruikschank) chart the progress of the voyagers through the scientist's body, burrowing past deadly antibodies, chunks of tobacco residue in the lungs, and other obstacles. Oscars also went to Jack Martin Smith and Dale Hennesy's art direction and Walter M. Scott and Stuart A. Reiss' set decoration. Other nominations were received for color cinematography (Ernest Laszlo) and sound effects [The AllMovie Guide]. & & Blue studio wrappers, noted as FINAL and project No. 43 on the front wrapper, and dated December 22, 1964 (nearly two years prior to the film's release). Title page present, marked "Final," date matching the front wrapper, and with a credit for screenwriter Kleiner. 142 leaves, principal pages eye-rest green, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 1/15/1965 and 2/23/1965 Pages Near Fine with the most minute nicking to the page fore-edges; wrapper Very Good plus with yapped edges, bound with three gold brads.

The Raj Quartet, comprising] The Jewel in the Crown; The Day of the Scorpion; The Towers of Silence; [and] A Division of the Spoils

William Heinemann [through 1971], London 1966 - A scarce, complete set in collectible condition of Scott's celebrated quartet, set during the concluding years of the British Raj, in four octavo volumes. [10],450,[2]; [8],483,[1]; [10],3-392; [10],3-597,[3]pp. Jewel: Publisher's copper-colored cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket, priced 30s. About Fine (dust-soiled top edge, spine toe creased, else tight, bright, clean and strong) and apparently unread in about Near Fine jacket (spine panel lightly faded, with tips briefly worn). Scorpion: Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket, priced 42s. Fine, in Near Fine jacket, very lightly edge-worn, with short closed tear along back flap fold. Towers: Publisher's navy-blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket priced £2.75. Fine (save for a previous owner's surname on front fly leaf), in a just about Fine jacket, lightly edge worn. Spoils: Publisher's chestnut-brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket priced £4.90. Fine (save for previous owner's inscription in a neat hand on front fly leaf), in Fine jacket. Scott's "painstakingly researched Quartet which examines the lives of ordinary Anglo-Indians against the background of the end of Empire [the five years from the Quit India campaign of the Congress Committee to Indian independence, in 1947]. These novels constitute Scott's principal claim to be regarded as a major post-war writer [The Times, in fact, called Scott's quartet "one of the most important landmarks of post-war fiction."] . . . . The Quartet is still perhaps underestimated as an analysis of the pre-Independence roots of the racism Salman Rushdie identified in the 1980s under the label 'the New Empire within Britain.' Scott sacrificed his life to the writing of the Quartet, becoming something of a monomaniacal recluse with tendencies toward alcoholism and occasional domestic violence. His death from cancer, in 1978, in London came at the time his work was just beginning to be appreciated." (The Literary Encyclopedia) TN. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.       New York, McGraw-Hill Book Company, [ 1966 - ]. 15 volumes, separately page. Illus. Quarto. Each of the six volumes (comprised of two or three physical volumes) is in its own slipcase. Backstrips of vol. 1 rubbed and extremities of its slipcase worn; otherwise all slipcases are in very good condition, as are the volumes themselves. The first part of five of the volumes is signed and in some cases inscribed by H. W. Rickett, at various dates between 1967 and 1973. The previous owner, a horticulturist who was the source of four of the color illustrations, has neatly penciled in cross references between a great many of the illustrations and the corresponding text descriptions of the flowers. In our judgment, these additions correct a deficiency of the book as published, and are enhancements rather than defects. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Existence of Competitive Equilibria in Markets with a Continuum of Traders.Santa Monica: RAND, 1964. First edition.

Rare first issue of this seminal paper included in Kuhn's Classics in Game Theory. In this work, published later in the journal Econometrica 1966, Aumann showed the existence of equilibria in his model of markets with 'perfect competition' (i.e., with a continuum of participants). Aumann's model forms a cornerstone in modern economic analysis.<br/><br/> "<i>Perfect competition</i> has always been a central theme in economics. It refers to a situation where there are many participants and the influence of each individual on the economy as a whole is negligible. But how should perfect competition be modeled?<br/><br/> Following various attempts, Aumann (1964) introduced the general model of a <i>continuum</i> of agents: <br/><br/> 'The influence of an individual participant on the economy cannot be mathematically negligible, as long as there are only finitely many participants. Thus a mathematical model appropriate to the intuitive notion of perfect competition must contain infinitely many participants. We submit that the most natural model for this purpose contains a continuum of participants, similar to the continuum of points on a line or the continuum of particles in a fluid. [. . .] <br/><br/> The continuum can be considered an approximation to the 'true' situation in which there is a large but finite number of particles (or traders, or strategies, or possible prices). The purpose of adopting the continuous approximation is to make available the powerful and elegant methods of the branch of mathematics called 'analysis,' in a situation where treatment by finite methods would be much more difficult or even hopeless (think of trying to do fluid mechanics by solving n-body problems for large n).' <br/><br/> The 'continuum of agents' idea has turned out to be indispensable to the advancement of economic theory. As in the natural sciences, it has enabled precise and rigorous modeling and analysis, which otherwise would have been very hard or even impossible. Once the continuum model was studied and understood, one could go back and examine the 'true' situations with finitely many agents, using appropriate approximations and limits. <br/><br/> The foremost result is the equivalence between <i>competitive</i> (or <i>Walrasian</i>) <i>equilibria</i> and <i>core</i> allocations in perfectly competitive markets: individual price-taking behavior and social stability yield the same outcomes (Aumann, 1964, and also the survey of Anderson, 1994). This may be viewed as a modern and rigorous formalization of the 'invisible hand' of Adam Smith and the limit 'contract curve' of Edgeworth. <br/><br/> The core is a classical concept of cooperative game theory (recall also the Strong Folk Theorem above). Another central cooperative concept is that of <i>value</i>, originally introduced by Shapley (1953). The notion of value embodies standard economic ideas such as 'expected outcome' and 'marginal contribution'. Applying it to markets with a continuum of traders yielded a new equivalence result, this time between the price equilibria and the value allocations (Aumann and Shapley, 1974, Aumann, 1975; see the survey of Hart, 2002). <br/><br/> All this led to an extensive study of the relationships between competitive equilibria and various game-theoretic concepts, which led to a very general 'equivalence principle'. To quote Aumann: 'Perhaps the most remarkable single phenomenon in game and economic theory is the relationship between the price equilibria of a competitive market economy, and all but one of the major solution concepts for the corresponding game. [. . .] <br/><br/> Intuitively, the equivalence principle says that the institution of market prices arises naturally from the basic forces at work in a market, (almost) no matter what we assume about the way in which these forces work." <br/><br/> The end result of the introduction of the continuum model in economics is that it has led to a much better understanding of perfect competition, its implications and limitations, from many disparate but converging viewpoints." (Hart, <i>Robert Aumann's Game and Economic Theory</i>). RAND memorandum RM-3853-PR June 1954. Large 4to (275 x 214 mm), original grey printed wrappers, pp. [viii] 66 [2:blank]. Rare

The Collected Works of Jane Bowles

The Noonday Press, New York 1966 - First edition, trade paperback issue, of the collected works of Jane Bowles, with an introduction by Truman Capote. Although Bowles published comparatively little, she was a true writer's writer, a sly prose stylist of great originality, easier to admire than to imitate. This collection contains her stories, her play In The Summer House, and her defining novel Two Serious Ladies: "'Since you live so far out of town,' said Arnold, 'why don't you spend the night at my house? We have an extra bedroom.' 'I probably shall,' said Miss Goering, 'although it is against my entire code, but then, I have never even begun to use my code, although I judge everything by it.' Miss Goering looked a little morose after having said this and they drove on in silence until they reached their destination." Affectionately inscribed by Bowles to Arab-American poet Sam Hazo: "We all wonder what makes Sammy rhyme. Fondly, Jane." The founder of the International Poetry Forum, Hazo did much to promote Arab and African writers in the United States; as longtime residents of Tangier, both Jane and Paul Bowles took an interest in the translation and publication of modern North African writing. Books inscribed by Bowles are notably scarce. A near-fine copy, with an excellent literary association. Octavo, original printed wraps designed by Ronald Clyne.         Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 3, The Coming of War 1936 - 1939

The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - sixteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. This is the rarest, most keenly sought, and most prohibitive to acquire of the Official Biography Companion volumes. There was just a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. The third is the rarest of the three Volume V Companions. Here is the British first edition, only printing, a superlative, truly fine example in a fine dust jacket that appears unread. This is as good as they come. The red cloth binding is immaculate - clean and tight retaining a nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and virtually no wear. The contents are pristine. There is no sign of the looseness or gutter breaks that so often occur with this massive volume. No spotting. No previous ownership marks. The red topstain retains deep, entirely unfaded color. The fore and bottom edges are as clean and bright as the contents. The dust jacket is crisp, bright, and complete. The front flap price remains intact. We note absolutely no losses or tears. We detect no sunning whatsoever to the spine lettering. Searching for flaws, we note only a trivial hint of wrinkling to a tiny portion of the top edge of the rear face. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e3.

1966. Autograph. Very Good. No Binding. Inscribed by Author(s). Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. This is an ORIGINAL hand signed vintage 11 x 14 double weight photo of the greatest singer of the past century, Frank Sinatra with his very own autograph It's been in my collection for a number of years. The pose seems to be late '50s to mid 1960s and is stamped Ted Allan on the reverse. Grammy-winning record producer Ethel Gabriel had a very similar signed Sinatra photo (same size, same pose, same signature) that she kept prominently displayed near her gold records. Google her pictures and you'll probably find it. You are not likely to see something this spectacular again anytime soon!.

Winston S. Churchill: The Official Biography, full set of 8 volumes in uniform, solid color dust jackets

The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, begun by Randolph Churchill and completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. All eight main text volumes are now out of print, having been published between 1966 and 1988. Together they claim 19 inches of shelf space, weigh more than 28 pounds, and fill nearly 8,700 pages.  Offered here is a complete, jacketed set of all eight volumes. All eight volumes are British first editions in their original, uniform, solid color dust jackets.  All eight volumes are in near-fine plus or better condition, appearing unread.  All eight bindings are tight, clean, and square with virtually no wear.  The contents of all eight volumes are clean and bright.  We find no spotting or previous ownership marks of any kind in the set.  The unstained fore and bottom edges are likewise clean and bright.  The red-stained top edges all retain strong color, with only very slight sunning to a few.  The uniform, solid color dust jackets are all unclipped, varying from very good plus to fine condition.  Shelf presentation is quite good.  All eight dust jackets are complete with only slight wear at the head of the Volume II jacket spine and some abrasion along the lower Volume VII rear hinge.  Many of these solid color dust jackets proved highly susceptible to sunning of the spines.  Here minor sunning affects the jacket spines of only Volumes II & IV.  All eight dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Please note that this is a large and heavy set that will likely require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301a-h.
