        Turgenev

      c. 1966. Sheet size: 143 × 146 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

        The Crying of Lot 49

Philadelphia, PA & New York, NY: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Fine/Near Fine. The Crying of Lot 49...is the story of Oedipa Maas, a young woman who finds herself appointed executrix of a former lover's estate. This is annoying enough, but when it leads to the gradual revelation of the secret postal system of the outcasts..."(from rear flap) A first edition of Thomas Pynchon's second novel, published three years after his Faulkner First Novel Award-winning V. made a splash whose ripples still resonate. Another hauntingly humorous cult-popular classic by this uncatagorizable giant of twentieth & twenty-first century American literature. As Richard Poirier wrote at the end of his New York Times review when it was first published, "What is also noticeable here, and throughout the novel, is that the major character is really Pynchon himself, Pynchon's voice with its capacity to move from the elegy to the epic catalogue. The narrator sounds like a survivor looking through the massed wreckage of his civilization, "a salad of despair." That image...is typically full of sadness, terror, love, and flamboyance. But then, how else should one imagine a tryst with America? And that is what this novel is." A very important item for any serious Pynchon collection, in relatively wonderful condition. Book very fine with very mild soiling & scratching to edges, very light wear, soiling & spotting to upper & lower edges of front, back covers & spine, very small bump at top right corner of front cover, interior almost mint with only very light browning to edges. Dust jacket in near-fine condition with very minor rubbing & moderate creasing at top right corner of front cover, moderate wear & soiling of back cover esp. vertically at or near edges, very small missing portion at lower spine, top appx. 1/16" horizontal portion of front & back covers neatly cut off (can be determined from jagged remains at spine), unclipped front & rear flaps in very fine condition with only very light browning & creasing at edges.

The Big Knockover. Selected Stories and Short Novels. Edited and with an Introduction by Lillian Hellman

New York: Random House, 1966. First Edition. Inscribed by Lillian Hellman to Norman Mailer, â??For Norman, With love, Lillian.â? Just very good in dust jacket; in a custom cloth clamshell box. Of course, it would be better to have it inscribed by Hammett, but he had already been dead for five years, so set that wish aside. Given Mailerâ??s own weak attempt at hardboiled fiction (Tough Guys Donâ??t Dance, 1984), this is an especially good association. Despite his well-earned reputation as a writer, that book demonstrated that it is no easy task, even for someone as talented and skilled as Mailer, to write in the genre.

Museaal.         Three Signed Items -- a photograph, letter, and envelope

Independence, MO, 1966. Independence, MO, 1966. unbound. Brief typed letter signed and an inscribed photo-portrait with the original signed manila mailing envelope, sent by Truman to a well wisher who, by chance, while visiting Kansas City on business happened upon the former President while he was retrieving his evening newspaper outside his door and exchanged greetings. When the gentleman returned home to Illinois, he sent a postcard (enclosed) to the former President, along with a typed letter, which says, in part: "I am 38 years of age, the father of six children, and a veteran of World War II. I am extremely proud of my American heritage and go through great lengths to teach my children what it means to be an American, and their responsibility to their country. To commemorate our brief encounter and further illustrate to my children the meaning of democracy, I respectfully request this favor. Could you possibly forward a photograph of yourself and would you be kind enough to sign it for me? You may be confident this would be a most cherished item and be in my family for generations to come."         [Original Poster for Andy Warhol's Up-Tight, Feb. 8 - 13, 1966 at the Film-Makers' Cinematheque]

New York: np, (1966) New York: np, (1966). First Edition. Very Good. 8.5” x 11” offset flyer. Black-and-white photograph of Warhol with Gerard Malanga, Edie Sedgwick, and the band (sans Nico); text below. PROVENANCE: From the estate of Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison, with Morrison's widow Martha's signed letter of provenance included. Four long flattened creases from having been folded. Very good. Andy Warhol began his famed association with The Velvet Underground in late 1965, after catching the band at Cafe Bizarre in the Village. He found the Velvets "fabulous and demented" and offered (at Paul Morrissey's urging) to manage the group. Morrissey had been looking for a house band to be part of a series of multimedia happenings he and Warhol had envisioned. The debut of these extravaganzas soon occurred (infamously) at the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry dinner (Herald Tribune headline: "Psychiatrists Flee Warhol"). But the performances promoted in this flyer represent the first public appearances of the band with Nico and predate their debut album (produced by Warhol and featuring his iconic banana design) by more than a year. Appearing with the Velvets and Warhol were Edie Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga, Morrissey, Donald Lyons, Barbara Rubin, Bob Neuwirth, Daniel Williams and Billy Linich (aka Billy Name), many of whom eventually become members of the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. And the Cinematheque shows clearly anticipate the Inevitable. The band performed in front of screens projecting Warhol's VINYL, EAT, and EMPIRE, and the show featured (according to the flyer): "Up-tight Rock 'n Roll, Whip Dancers, Film maker Freaks, Tapers, Anchovies, filming live episodes of the 'Up-Tight' series and including Film Premiere for the first time anywhere: Andy Warhol's MORE MILK, YVETTE starring Maria Montez and The Velvet Underground." Designed by Morrissey and featuring an image of Warhol with the Velvets taken at the Factory New Year's Eve 1965, this rare flyer is "the very first document linking Andy Warhol with The Velvet Underground" (Kugelberg, NEW YORK ART, 58). See also: Kugelberg, C/O THE VELVET UNDERGROUND (54) and DeRogatis, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: An Illustrated History Of A Walk On The Wild Side (48). From the estate of Sterling Morrison (who was something of the band's unofficial archivist during their career), a spectacular association of both a key Warhol event and a pivotal Velvet Underground performance.
