Die Windhose vom 13. October 1870.Brünn: Verlag des Vereines, 1871.

First edition of Mendel's "most outstanding meteorological publication" (Orel), which includes the first proposed physical mechanism for the formation of a tornado, almost half a century before the work of Alfred Wegener, which is usually regarded as the beginning of scientific research on tornadoes. Mendel's "meteorological work was well known and highly regarded during his lifetime, but is now almost forgotten. By contrast, his work with peas, to which he devoted only eight years, was ignored during his lifetime, but is now highly regarded" (Corcos & Monaghan, Gregor Mendel's Experiments on Plant Hybrids (1966), p. 32). According to DSB, "The Verhandlungen was distributed to 134 scientific institutions in various countries, including those in New York, Chicago, and Washington." It is generally accepted that no more than 200 copies of the Verhandlungen were published, and the surviving volumes are of great rarity, especially in the original printed wrappers.

"Of the many branches of natural science which interested Mendel, meteorology was the one which enjoyed his attention the longest. His obituary notice gave in first place after his name his membership of the Vienna Meteorological Society. No mention is made of his membership of the Natural Science Society, where he lectured on his plant-hybridization experiments. He was thus acknowledged foremost as a natural scientist among meteorologists" (Orel, p. 242).

Mendel had been trained not only in natural history but also in physics and chemistry. "He made full use of his experience in 1870, when, on 13 October, an extraordinary whirlwind struck Brno. It was not long before, on 9 November, that the meeting of the Natural Science Society enjoyed a remarkable exposition of this exceptional meteorological phenomenon. In the following year Mendel published his ten-page [sic] report in the society journal [the offered paper]. It is Mendel's most outstanding meteorological publication, exhibiting in addition to theoretical knowledge a remarkable talent for observation and a capacity for the quick formation of a hypothesis. The whirwind swept past the monastery at two o'clock in the afternoon, and Mendel observed it from an open window. His description is supplemented by the evidence of other eye-witnesses. The first part describes the course of the whirlwind, and Mendel explains it as he would a physical phenomenon to a class of students. He speaks of a 'natural spectacle', with an indescribable roar, and of a 'hellish symphony, accompanied by the crash of window-panes and slates, which in some cases were flung through shattered windows to the other side of the room. The moment the first wave of the whirlwind passed, Mendel goes on, 'my gaze soon uncovered the enemy. It was the first whirlwind I have seen other than in pictures and magazines.'

"Another part of Mendel's exemplary account describes the shape of the oncoming whirlwind in the form of a diabolo; he estimates its size, direction of rotation, and speed as it travelled from Kamenný Vrch hill, through the Pisárky valley and the old Brno brewery to Pekarská street, and up to the south slope of the Spilberk hill to the railway station. He explains the origin of whirlwinds as a physicist through the meeting of two air streams of different dimensions and properties, arising shortly after the occurrence of a storm. The resulting formation in this case turned in a clockwise direction, which Mendel denotes as an exception to the rules of atmospheric currents in the northern hemisphere. He also considered the shape to be atypical...

"It was not until much later that A. Wegener (1917) gave a scientific explanation of tornadoes, and did so in exactly the same way as Mendel, though without any reference to the latter. One might almost speak of the rediscovery of Mendel's fascinating publication on this subject" (Orel, pp. 245-6).

V. Orel, Gregor Mendel. The first geneticist. Oxford University Press, 1996. A. Wegener, Wind- und Wasserhosen in Europa. Braunschweig: Vieweg, 1917.. Pp. 229-246 (of the Abhandlungen) in Verhandlungen des Naturforschenden Vereins in Brünn, IX Band, 1870. Brünn: Verlag den Vereinen, 1871. 8vo (240 x 156 mm), pp. v, [3, blank], xxviii, 85 [Sitzungs-Berichte], 259 [Abhandlungen], with six plates. An accordion-folded book with numerous black and white photographs taken by Ruscha of the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, California. Spine slightly creased. Otherwise a near fine copy. Housed in the publisher's original silver slipcase. Edward Ruscha (b. 1937) is an influential American artist associated with the Pop art movement of the 1950s. In Every Building On The Sunset Strip, Ruscha took continuous photographs for two and one half miles of the buildings along the "Strip" portion of Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. These photographs were printed and bound in an accordion-fold style book which Ruscha himself oversaw the entire production of. This book exemplifies a new genre of art book created by Ruscha. In the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit Timothy F. Leary Appellant, United States Appelle Brief for the Appellant

Joel Jay Finer - 1966, 1st printing. (Wrappers) Very good. 129pp. Original printed blue grey wrappers. Somewhat browned on the edges. Spine faded to tan. Minor pen corrections throughout the text. A very presentable copy of a very scarce item especially so signed. No 23570. This is a printed version of the appeal Leary's council made for his famous conviction on March 11, 1966 for transporting and illegally importing marihuana. The famous case known as Leary vs. United States was eventually overturned on the grounds that the Marihuana Tax Act was declared unconstitutional. His conviction was thus quashed. This wonderful document detailing the whole grounds for appeal has been signed by Leary on the front wrapper when he was making a public reading in Toronto in 1992. The prospectus for the Multimedia convention is also loosely laid in. A wonderful rare Leary item. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Wrong Venus (First Edition, inscribed to John D. MacDonald)

New American Library (NAL), New York 1966 - First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper to fellow mystery writer John D. MacDonald: "To John D. / With admiration / Charlie." A brief but eloquent inscription, linking two of the best hard-boiled mystery writers of a generation. Williams also wrote the screenplay for the 1968 film adaptation, "Don't Just Stand There!" starring Robert Wagner and Mary Tyler Moore. Williams is best known for his books "Dead Calm," "Aground," and "The Sailcloth Shroud." Like other hard-boiled authors, much of his output came in the form of paperback originals, and his books are seldom found inscribed, this being only the second such copy we have seen. On top of that, a stellar association. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. A lovely copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
