        International Times: Issues 1, 2 & 3

no publisher, [London 1966 - Newspaper. Three issues of the weekly English counterculture newspaper, each issue is folded once as issued. Folios. 12pp., 16pp., and 12pp. Near fine in illustrated wrappers with very light tanning, scattered tears at the extremities, and a couple of spots. An important and influential alternative press publication launched in London in the fall of 1966 by co-founders John Hopkins, a noted photographer and activist of the time, and Barry Miles, owner of the influential Indica Bookshop and Gallery, and the man who introduced Paul McCartney to some very special brownies. The bi-weekly publication focused on politics, art, music, movies, and culture. Issue One includes a poem by Adrian Mitchell, a photo by John Hopkins, a comic by Jeff Nuttall and, most notably, an article about a new exhibition at the Indica Gallery by artist Yoko Ono, one that John Lennon would attend and, well, you know the rest. Issue Two includes an article about Ezra Pound, an underground film festival supplement, and coverage of the *International Times* launch party which apparently was a hell of a bash: an appearance by Paul McCartney, a performance by Pink Floyd, the viewing of William Burroughs's film *Towers Open Fire*, and a car in the middle of it all painted in psychedelic colors (apparently the party spoofed in *Austin Powers* was real and this was it). Issue Three includes a piece written by Burroughs, "The Invisible Generation," along with articles on Bertrand Russell, composer Morton Feldman, and on rubber fetishists by noted film critic Raymond Durgnat, entitled "Rubber with Violence." These newspapers are an interesting window into the life of Swinging Sixties London. [Attributes: First Edition]

The practice of this craft is now widespread, with established organizations such as the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists. Mason notes on an introductory page that "at the end of this copy I have added five extra interesting items." These are: * Introductory leaves of his first sample book, published by Maggs in 1959; Menu upon his 1958 election as a member of the Double Crown Club; Twelve by Eight Press contribution to Typophile Memorial Keepsake to Paul A. Bennett; Original sketch of trees, pen and ink by Rigby Graham; Specimen page from booklet on papermaking produced at Leicester College of Art by Douglas Martin.         Human Action. A Treatise on Economics. Third revised edition.

Chicago: Henry Regnery Company, [1966] - Octavo (228 x 152 mm). Publisher's cloth, spine lettered gilt. With the dust jacket. Short tear to the upper joint of the dust jacket, the jacket with some fraying to the spine ends. A very good copy. Inscribed on the half-title: "To Dean Joseph H. Taggart, Ludwig Mises. February 14, 1967." Third, revised edition, originally published in 1949, of Mises's "systematic study of the manifold activities of human beings in search of food, shelter, and the variety of goods they have come to need" (publisher's blurb). "More than any other economist of the twentieth century, von Mises has expounded and developed the theories of the Austrian school of economics. Although most of economic thought, after the mid-1930s, was moving in a different direction, von Mises proceeded to develop the general system of economic theory that he had laid out in his 1933 book [Grundprobleme der Nationalökonmie]. The result was his Nationalökonomie: Theorie des Handelns und des Wirtschaftens (1940), the first general treatise on economics since World War I; later it was expanded into the English-language work, Human Action (1949)." (Murray Rothbard in ESS). Joseph H. Taggart, the recipient of this copy, was at the time Dean of the Graduate School of Business Administration at New York University, where Mises taught for over twenty years following his arrival in America in 1940.         Original Poster for Andy Warhol's Up-Tight, Feb. 8 - 13, 1966 at the Film-Makers' Cinematheque]

np (1966), New York - 8.5" x 11" offset flyer. Black-and-white photograph of Warhol with Gerard Malanga, Edie Sedgwick, and the band (sans Nico); text below. PROVENANCE: From the estate of Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison, with Morrison's widow Martha's signed letter of provenance included. Four long flattened creases from having been folded. Very good. Andy Warhol began his famed association with The Velvet Underground in late 1965, after catching the band at Cafe Bizarre in the Village. He found the Velvets "fabulous and demented" and offered (at Paul Morrissey's urging) to manage the group. Morrissey had been looking for a house band to be part of a series of multimedia happenings he and Warhol had envisioned. The debut of these extravaganzas soon occurred (infamously) at the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry dinner (Herald Tribune headline: "Psychiatrists Flee Warhol"). But the performances promoted in this flyer represent the first public appearances of the band with Nico and predate their debut album (produced by Warhol and featuring his iconic banana design) by more than a year. Appearing with the Velvets and Warhol were Edie Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga, Morrissey, Donald Lyons, Barbara Rubin, Bob Neuwirth, Daniel Williams and Billy Linich (aka Billy Name), many of whom eventually become members of the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. And the Cinematheque shows clearly anticipate the Inevitable. The band performed in front of screens projecting Warhol's VINYL, EAT, and EMPIRE, and the show featured (according to the flyer): "Up-tight Rock 'n Roll, Whip Dancers, Film maker Freaks, Tapers, Anchovies, filming live episodes of the 'Up-Tight' series and including Film Premiere for the first time anywhere: Andy Warhol's MORE MILK, YVETTE starring Maria Montez and The Velvet Underground." Designed by Morrissey and featuring an image of Warhol with the Velvets taken at the Factory New Year's Eve 1965, this rare flyer is "the very first document linking Andy Warhol with The Velvet Underground" (Kugelberg, NEW YORK ART, 58). See also: Kugelberg, C/O THE VELVET UNDERGROUND (54) and DeRogatis, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: An Illustrated History Of A Walk On The Wild Side (48). From the estate of Sterling Morrison (who was something of the band's unofficial archivist during their career), a spectacular association of both a key Warhol event and a pivotal Velvet Underground performance.         tud

Guild Press Ltd, Washington DC 1966 - The first major work by Steward under his Phil Andros pseudonym, now considered a classic of gay literature. Steward, who spent most of his adult life in Chicago, had a PhD in English and taught at a variety of institutions through the mid 1940's. He left academia and made a name for himself as one of the leading tattoo artists of his day, for a time serving as the official tattoo artist for the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in the Bay Area. He lived an open, renegade homosexual lifestyle, meticulously documenting his sexual conquests and escapades in diaries and a box marked "Stud File." After meeting Alfred Kinsey in 1949, he spent a number of years working for the Institute for Sex Research in an unofficial capacity, openly sharing the details of his sexual records and introducing Kinsey to large numbers of sexually active men in the Chicago area. In 1966, thanks to changes in American publishing laws, he published $tud under the Guild Press imprint, a novel told in a series of 18 episodes. It's the story of "a cocky male hustler who made no bones about his illicit profession, nor his countless erotic encounters." Like his character, Steward was "a macho rebel and a proud gay man writing at a time when many similar stories were still drenched in shame and guilt" (Peters, Brooks. Lover Man: The Samuel Steward Story). The rare dustjacket shows superb wraparound artwork, designed by homoerotic illustrator "Etienne" (pseud. of Dom Orejudos). Though the book was reprinted in the early 1980's by Alyson Books, the first edition is rare; we find no copies in the trade (2014), with OCLC showing 10 copies in U.S. institutions, 3 others internationally. YOUNG 66. First Printing. Octavo (21cm); black cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; dustjacket; 295pp. Some trivial rubbing to crown and lower board edges, else Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $4.95), with light rubbing to panels, a few short, closed tears, and two tiny chips at upper corners of rear panel; Very Good+. [Attributes: First Edition]

Steward was included in Gertrude Stein's literary circle in the 1930s, became involved with Dr. Kinsey in the 1950s, worked as a tattoo artist through the 1960s and also became a gay porn writer as Phil Andros (among others)He spent his final years in Chicago.
