        GRIST 7

Abington Book Shop, Lawrence, KS 1966 - Quarto; white illustrated wraps printed in black and purple, stapled; 39pp; illus. Hint of toning along spine fold, else Fine. Issue 7 of Charles Plymell's literary magazine, notable for featuring the first commercially published pieces of S. Clay Wilson's artwork. Wilson, along with Robert Crumb and Manuel "Spain" Rodriguez, was an influential pioneer in the underground comix movement beginning in the 1960's. Three pieces of artwork appear in this issue, and while they don't depict the full-throttle violence and ugly sex which usually permeates his work, the beginnings are there. The first piece is a full-page pen drawing titled 'Captain Marble and his pirate crew dine after a hard day of pillage, rape, murder, and looting. And plunder and evil.' The second piece is an untitled centerfold depicting a variety of bikers and miscreants at a burger joint. Wilson has also illustrated the rear cover of the magazine. While other artists from that era have moderated their extreme style of artwork in order to assimilate into the mainstream, even into his 70's, Wilson seems resolutely defiant. An important and extremely uncommon debut, predating any work he did for Zap! Comix by a considerable margin of time. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Alley Jaggers

New York: Harper & Row. (1966). First. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper. The Dedication Copy, Inscribed by the author to Charles W. Mann and his wife Nan: "For Charley and Nan, this long-promised and incomparably dedicated conduit for fried potato! Love, Alley. 27 April 1966. More to follow!" The printed dedication reads: "For Nan and Charley." Mann was the rare books and special collections librarian at Penn State, where West emigrated and was teaching when the book was published, and they were apparently quite close. The inscription acknowledges the autobiographical nature of the book, signed by West as "Alley," and more books featuring the protagonist were indeed to follow as this title was the first of a quartet featuring Alley Jaggers. West is an especially interesting, and in our opinion much underappreciated writer. Aside from important scholarly and critical work, he also published acclaimed non-fiction, and his novels, especially the Alley Jaggers series, seemed to capture the mid- to late-century zeitgeist, without providing the necessary stereotypical style to easily characterize or pigeonhole them in the literary canon. We suspect they will be more fully appreciated at a later date. .

ALFIE: Original 113pp Mimeographed Screenplay for the 1966 Film Starring Michael Caine; a Working Script with Copious Annotations by the Wardrobe Department)

Sheldrake Films (Distributed By Paramount Pictures), London 1966 - [Naughton, Bill] ALFIE. London: Sheldrake Films, 1965. Original 113pp Draft Screenplay bound in original black production company covers, dated April 14, 1965, for the film adaptation of Bill Naughton's novel ALFIE starring Michael Caine in his first leading role. This copy belonged to the film's wardrobe department, most likely to wardrobe supervisor Jean Fairlie; it is heavily annotated with copious notes on the costuming required from scene to scene. One of the many remarkable things about the film ALFIE was its depiction of swinging London in the 1960 and wardrobe was certainly one of the most important elements in creating the "look and feel" of the film. This draft consists primarily of light blue pages but there are several inserted sections of white revision pages dated July 2, 1965. The wardrobe annotations are made on the versos of 40+ leaves in black ink, blue ink, and orange marker and are detailed and extensive. Directed by Lewis Gilbert, co-starring Shelley Winters, and with Naughton doing the screenplay adaptation himself, ALFIE was more than just a success (Five Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Screenplay), it has maintained its place over the years as one of the iconic cornerstones of the British film industry resurgence of the mid-1960s. The British Film Institute has ranked ALFIE 33rd on its list of the 100 greatest British Films. The script is complete and in Very Good condition (well-thumbed but with eye appeal). Unique.         Original 1966 Stable Gallery Exhibition Poster

New York: Poster Originals, 1966. Original, vintage silkscreen poster, 24 by 34 inches, unsigned, from an open edition of unspecified number, for Robert Indiana's 1966 exhibition at the Stable Gallery, New York. The introduction of one of the most iconic, enduring images from the Pop era. Later iterations of this poster, of which there were many, varied in size and carried the name of the printing firm and usually a copyright notice, which are absent from this example and so testify to its originality. In very good condition, with a few minor edge tears, a few surface scratches and imperfections, remnants of a former dry-mount adhesive on the reverse, but overall in remarkably good shape. An uncommon survivor.

        Anthony Trollope.

      c. 1966 - Sheet size: 190 × 140 mm. Stamped on recto lower margin for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. Pen and ink and blue crayon on wove paper. Portrait of the author in old age, the eyes highlighted in blue. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

        The Photographer's Eye.

Museum of Modern Art, New York 1966 - First Edition. Square quarto. Original cloth. Inscribed by Szarkowski to Robert Lewis; former head of the Yale School of Drama, author, actor, and founder of the Actor's Studio, "with warm good regards". Near fine in a very good plus price-clipped dust jacket. The black jacket almost inevitably shows wear, this is a very nice example with only light wear. From 1962 to 1991 Szarkowski was the Director of Photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art. The Photographer's Eye juxtaposes masters such as Cartier-Bresson, Evans, Steichen, Strand, and Weston with vernacular documents to analyze the fundamental challenges photographers have faced. "Whether Americans know it or not," his thinking about photography "has become our thinking about photography" (U.S. World & News, 1990). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
