        On the Greek Style [Signed Association Copy]

      Princeton, NJ: Atlantic Monthly Press [Little Brown and Company], 1966. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/near fine. A Very Good copy of the First American Edition, first printing (book askew, slight leftward lean, soiling to the page block edges, light handling soil to boards), in a Near Fine dust jacket (quite minor wear, modest soiling to the white rear panel and to the flap edges --- in excellent condition for an unlaminated dust jacket of this age), SIGNED AND INSCRIBED IN GREEK TO SEFERIS' FRIEND REX WARNER, WHO ALSO TRANSLATED THE BOOK AND PROVIDED THE BOOK'S INTRODUCTION, on the half-title, WITH THE OPENING LINES OF SEFERIS' FAMED POEM "Letter to Rex Warner" which, translated to English reads as follows: "At the time we met / you were telling the tale of the wild goose chase / in the kingdom of hermaphrodites; / there the football field / ....." [the last portion of the Poems first sentence, not included in the inscription but which sentence itself comprises the Poem's first stanza, states "had known a shameless slaughter." The balance of the stanza reads "I was returning from a marble stadium / where the obstinate marathon runner, wounded, / saw the track sailing in blood. / That way I came to understand you and we became friends."] This exceptional inscription reflects the relationship between these two close friends, fellow authors, and colleagues in the translation of Seferis' work for publication in English. It is worth noting here that Rex Warner's first novel was titled "The Wild Goose Chase" (1937) to which Seferis apparently refers in the inscription. Furthermore, Seferis was intensely curious as to why Cyprus had a disproportionate percentage of hermaphrodites in its population and, finally, was passionate about soccer. Certainly the two authors would have discussed these matters and the quotation reflects both these matters and their friendship. Certainly the ellipsis used by Seferis at the end of the inscription evidences his intent to include the balance of the Poem. In addition to their deep relationship as friends, each man held the other in high regard, and Warner's excellent translations of his work were a major factor in Seferis' winning the Prize. The book offered here constitutes the first publication of George Seferis' Essays in English. Seferis himself selected the Essays, written over a three-decade period, for this book. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. This copy belonged to Rex Warner, Seferis' good friend who, assisted by Th. D. Frangopoulos, translated the book into English and who authored the book's introduction. Signed copies of Seferis' works are extraordinarily scarce in any language, and our most recent search of the of the auction records shows no signed copies of his works coming to auction in the last 55 years. Altogether a Very Good + ASSOCIATION COPY of an extremely difficult-to-find book from the first Greek author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. RARE.

        Way back when wool was 20/- a lb'. A very large collage comprising 47 original individual caricatures of well-known pastoral identities ('Portrait sketches by Bushwaka' - black ink on paper, mounted on heavy card)

      - The sketches range between 100-140 mm high and 70-90 mm wide (two are smaller); they are mounted in five roughly straight lines, with their names and regional addresses (or rural industry employers) added in ballpoint pen to the mount. It is behind glass in its original and appropriately rustic white-painted wooden frame (external dimensions 770 x 970 mm, visible image size 595 x 800 mm). There is a Royal Easter Show Art Prize Exhibitions label on the verso, identifying the artist as Frank F. Forster, 10 Walker Ave, Narrabeen. The asking price on the label was $100, indicating it was exhibited on this occasion after the introduction of decimal currency (February 1966), but it looks earlier (perhaps 1940s-50s - just count the hats!). Whether this was the artist's intention, or whether it is indeed a product of an earlier time, we cannot say, but it certainly hits the spot. These are not just caricatures, they are clearly characters, presumably mates of Bushwaka himself: Cunningham Henderson of Casino; O.O.H. Dangar of Narrandera; C.J. Chisholm of Khancoban; A.H. Jeffreys and D.H. McKay of Delegate; Bert Parkes of Collarenabri; Mick Raleigh and Jack Watts of Wagga; E.H. Turner of Gunning . and on it goes. Cunningham Henderson died at the age of 89 in December 1954; although he is depicted as an elderly gentleman in this group portrait, there is no sense of 'In Memoriam' about it. The last word on the subject goes to Year Book Australia 2000 (page 447): 'Prosperity in the wool industry peaked in 1950-51 when the average greasy wool price reached 144.19 pence per pound'.         La mala hora [In Evil Hour] (First Mexican Edition)

      Mexico: Era, 1966. First Mexican Edition, preceded by 1962 Madrid edition, but the first printing of the text as Garcia Marquez originally intended. One of just 2,000 copies, and much scarcer than the 1962 Madrid edition of which 5,000 copies were printed. In an author's note to this edition, Gracia Marquez takes issue with the liberties taken by a proofreader of the 1962 edition, who "purified" many of the colloquialisms in the text. It was four years before the original text was published by the Mexican house Era.  In the author's note Garcia Marquez considered this to be the true first edition.   Very Good plus in illustrated wrappers (softcover). Inscribed by the author: "for Herb Yellin, John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. L'Internationale situationniste (IS) etait une organisation revolutionnaire desireuse d'en finir avec le malheur historique, avec la societe de classes et la dictature de la marchandise, se situant dans la filiation de differents courants apparus au debut du XXe siecle, notamment de la pensee marxiste d'Anton Pannekoek et de Rosa Luxemburg, du communisme de conseils, ainsi que du groupe Socialisme ou barbarie (Claude Lefort, Cornelius Castoriadis notamment) dans les annees 1950. En ce sens, elle pourrait etre apparentee a un groupe d'ultra-gauche. Mais elle representait a ses debuts l'expression d'une volonte de depassement des tentatives revolutionnaires des avant-gardes artistiques de la premiere moitie du XXe siecle, le dadaisme, le surrealisme[1] et le lettrisme[2]. Formellement creee en juillet 1957 a la Conference de Cosio di Arroscia, l'internationale situationniste est nee du rapprochement d'un ensemble international de mouvements d'avant-garde, dont l'Internationale lettriste (elle meme issue d'une rupture avec le Lettrisme de Isidore Isou), le Mouvement international pour un Bauhaus imaginiste, le Comite psychogeographique de Londres et un groupe de peintres italiens. Son document fondateur, Rapport sur la construction de situations..., a ete redige par Guy Debord en 1957. Dans ce texte programmatique, Debord pose l'exigence de " changer le monde " et envisage le depassement de toutes les formes artistiques par " un emploi unitaire de tous les moyens de bouleversement de la vie quotidienne ". L'un des principaux objectifs de l'Internationale situationniste etait l'accomplissement des promesses contenues dans le developpement de l'appareil de production contemporain et la liberation des conditions historiques, par une reappropriation du reel, et ce dans tous les domaines de la vie. Si le depassement de l'art fut son projet originel, elle s'est rapidement orientee vers une critique de la societe du spectacle, ou societe " spectaculaire-marchande ", corroboree d'un desir de revolution sociale. L'annee 1962 voit la scission entre " artistes " et " revolutionnaires " et l'exclusion des premiers. D'un point de vue organisationnel, l'IS conserve la position tres marxiste d'un parti theorique representant le plus haut niveau de conscience revolutionnaire. La theorisation de cette position ne se fera qu'assez tardivement dans la Definition Minimum des Organisations revolutionnaires (IS n°11), adoptee par la 7°Conference de l'IS en 1967, qui sera en France l'une des references du conseillisme d'apres mai 1968, et en 1969 dans les Preliminaires sur les conseils et l'organisation conseilliste (IS n°12). Slipcase inner fold of silver beginning to get loose, bubbling to silver foil and a bit of rubbing to shiny silver coating. A lovely copy, signed. As the Getty Center states, with this work the photographer "reinvented the artist's book." It features Mason Williams's first-person prose poem narrative of shattered romance illustrated with Patrick Blackwell's vintage photographs of Sin City - all art directed by Ed Ruscha. A most presentable example of the uncommon first and only edition limited to five hundred copies additionally BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED "Mason Williams 1967" in black ink on the front free endpaper showing some light wear, rubbing, and dulling to the metallic cloth covers as well as a non-authorial gift inscription in ink across from the title page. In this brilliantly edited volume, Tomatsu moves away from a purely representational depiction of the horrors of Japan's defining moment, focusing equally on the abstract tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki rather than just human deformity. Byrne, a teacher at Elizabeth Browning Junior High School in the Bronx recommending his favorite books and authors. Expected mailing folds, else very fine condition. Rickenbacker writes, in most part: ""...Of course it must be remembered that due to the early death of my father, I was forced to leave school at the seventh grade to go to work to help support a family of seven, so I had little time for reading. However, my favorite authors were Mark Twain, Horatio Alger and Tom Swift.       1966 - BALL, Lucille. With Desi Arnaz. Autograph Document Signed. An original proxy (issued to Clyde Johnson) of 432 shares held in the Indian Wells Country Club, issued for Johnson to effectuate the following: execute an agreement for Ball and Arnaz over use of the local golf course and to grant the right of first refusal concerning properties adjacent to the Indian Wells Hotel. Dated March 23, 1966 and signed by both Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Ball and Arnaz divorced in 1960 but they both founded the Indian Wells Resort Hotel, at Indian Wells, California, in 1956. Desi was remarried by 1963. While separate signatures of Ball and Arnaz are available it is difficult to obtain both their signatures on the same page. Although divorced, Ball and Arnaz remained close for the rest of their lives, with Arnaz calling Lucy every night until he died. He also sent her flowers every November 19th- their wedding day!         [The Master and Margarita, in] Moskva

      Moscow:, 1966-67. 2 parts (1966, pt. II; 1967, pt. I) in original printed wrappers. Housed in a pale tan cloth with titles blocked to spine and front in blue. Tape staining to backstrip of the first number, some general creasing to wrappers, both issues a little cocked. Very good. The first appearance in print in any format of The Master and Margarita, serialized in two issues of the journal Moskva in November 1966 and January 1967. Although the novel had been completed in 1938, in common with most of Bulgakov's prose it was not published until long after his death from an inherited kidney disorder in 1940. During his life, Bulgakov was best known for the plays he contributed to Konstantin Stanislavsky's and Nemirovich-Danchenko's Moscow Art Theatre. He published a number of novels and stories through the early and mid 1920s, but by 1927 his career began to suffer from criticism that he was too anti-Soviet. By 1929 his career was ruined: government censorship prevented publication of any of his work and staging of any of his plays, and Stalin personally forbade him to emigrate. This first printing of his best known work is a censored version of the text, eliminating much of the anti-Soviet satire, yet it still caused an immediate sensation on publication. The first edition in book form was published by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1967, also with the censored version of the Russian text. The full text was first published in English later in 1967 (there are two different English translations, one of the censored text and one of the full text). The first appearance of the full text in Russian was published in Frankfurt in 1969.

        Enlevements

      New York: Touchstone, 1966. First and only edition. A set of ten aquatint color etchings by French artist Brigitte Coudrain (1934-), this being number 34 of 100 copies printed by the Atelier George Leblanc in Paris for Touchstone. The etchings are printed on superb hand-made paper folded in leaves, with etched titles on the uppermost leaf, and the aquatints, each signed in the lower right margin, on the folded leaf following. All of the interleaved tissue guards are present. The sheets measure approximately 16" by 11" folded; the size of the etchings vary, but measure roughly 3" x 3". The etchings and the colophon are housed in a tape-tied, cloth-covered portfolio (17" x 12 1/4") with what seem to be two tiny nicks in the cloth and light rubbing on the spine-ends and corners. A publicity leaf for Coudrieu, as well as four other artists -- Jean Miro, Thomas Cornell, Alexander Calder and Nobumitsu Fukui -- are laid in. Fine.

Roy Davids is perhaps best known in his capacity as emeritus head of Sotheby's in London during one of the golden periods for literature in that organisation's history. Davids' built a remarkable collection of poetical manuscripts together with extensive runs of inscribed volumes of poetry. While not called to be signed, this copy has been SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the front free endpaper and there INSCRIBED BY HIM TO HIS FELLOW POET KATERINA ANGHELAKI-ROOKE (one of Greece's foremost Poets and Translators, and twice the winner of the Greek National Prize for Poetry). At the foot of the page there has been written (presumably by Anghelaki-Rooke) the date 2 March 1970, in Greek, presumably being the date of the inscription. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Signed copies of his works are difficult to find. The book offered here is the only signed copy of this title that we ever have seen. Pandora's Box lives! A most handsome example of the leporello interior of the first edition (entry B4 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999", and whose 1966 edition is cited on pages 142-143 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 198-199 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 182-185 of "The Book of 101 Books") limited to one thousand copies showing some typical light soiling along the exposed spine as well as some mild handling additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Ed Ruscha" in black ink across the top edge of the slipcase.
