Playscript for the American Broadway production. 139 photo-mechanically duplicated leaves, printed rectos only, bradbound into black, die-cut Russell Reproduction Studio wrappers. A faint tidemark at the bottom of the first few leaves and a stain (and paper remnants) on the rear wrap, else very good or better. Hand-numbered "#57" on the title page. After bombing in London in 1958 and almost derailing Pinter's career as a playwright, the American version, produced by Stoddard, Wright, and Leonard S. Field, debuted nearly a decade later to critical acclaim. It ran for 126 performances in 1967-68 and won a Tony Award for Best Actor for James Patterson. .

This is the personal copy of Albert Shipley- a supporting member of the cast during the play's original Off-Broadway performance at the American Place Theatre, New York City, in November, 1965. Faye Dunaway played the lead role of "Kathleen Stanton" in the play and her performance in this role is generally considered the one that launched her career. This copy is signed by Faye Dunaway and 32 other cast members. A remarkable copy, Dunaway's signature is the largest at the bottom of the cast list- see pages [x and xi]. Also with signatures, including Alfred, director Frederick Rolf, and actors Conrad Bain and Ralph Waite, who played the lead role, on the opposite blank page. Shipley has signed the front endpaper and affixed a small snapshot of himself (in costume?) and his blindstamp bookmark. Shipley's personal calling card is inserted and page [147] has been annotated with a correction noting the play was first staged on October 19 rather than in November. Early in her career Dunaway was appearing in a number of productions at the Lincoln Center Repertory Company but eventually she left after director Elia Kazin quit the company. She subsequently landed the lead role in this play and caught the eye of producer Sam Spiegel. This led to her first film appearance in "The Happening." Near fine (small stain fore-edge); little edgewear and few small tear (price-clipped) d/j. $750.00.

        Enlevements

      New York Touchstone 1966 A set of ten aquatint color etchings by French artist Brigitte Coudrain (1934-), this being number 34 of 100 copiesprinted by the Atelier George Leblanc in Paris for Touchstone. The etchings are printed on superb hand-made paper folded in leaves, with etched titles on the uppermost leaf, and the aquatints, each signed in the lower right margin, on the folded leaf following. All of the interleaved tissue guards are present. The sheets measure approximately 16" by 11" folded; the size of the etchings vary, but measure roughly 3" x 3". The etchings and the colophon are housed in a tape-tied, cloth-covered portfolio (17" x 12 1/4") with what seem to be two tiny nicks in the cloth and light rubbing on the spine-ends and corners. A publicity leaf for Coudrieu, as well as four other artists -- Jean Miro, Thomas Cornell, Alexander Calder and Nobumitsu Fukui -- are laid in. Fine.

      1966-1970. Autograph album. Oblong 12mo. Red leather album with "Autographs" in gilt on front board and blank pages. Each of the pages has been careful and artistically folded (as issued?), when a page was used it was unfolded. Ownership signature of Kira Vivian, daughter of Civil Rights pioneer C.T. Vivian, Blackstone Ranger, Freedom Rider, and one of the chief lieutenants of Dr. King during the Civil Rights Struggle. Inscribed by Kira Vivian to herself on the front fly, in girlish fashion. Leaves are creased where they've been unfolded, else condition overall is fine. Most of the signatures are directly on the pages of the album, a few inscriptions are tipped or laid in.Interspersed with a few autographs of the young teenage Kira's school friends are the Inscriptions and Autographs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, John Lewis, Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, Fanny Lou Hamer, Charles Billups, and James Bevel (Director of Direct Action and Director of Nonviolent Education of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Director of the Selma Movement). A visceral artifact of the struggle for Civil Rights, compiled at a time when the outcome was by no means assured. It would be difficult to capture the immediacy of the Movement so completely in a single object. .

"In 1966, that 'honorary member' of the new sensibility, Andy Warhol - whose multiple-image Pop paintings often resemble stamp sheets - created a non-denominational sheet of stamps as the cover of the literary magazine Some/Thing #3. On each stamp the legend "BOMB HANOI" floats in the middle of a yellow orb. In exact terms Warhol's was not a postage stamp, but a "campaign" stamp, the kind that political or other special interest groups publish to affix to letters (e.g. Easter Seals).         The Spectra Hoax [presentation, association]

Signed by lead hoaxer Witter Bynner [as "Emanuel Morgan"], presented to Kenneth L. Ball, the student who first discovered his identity. Octavo, 158 pp, beige cloth with black and white imprinting, jacket. Fine book in near fine jacket showing trace edgewear. A singular copy of the book about "the hoax" . In the early years of the twentieth century, all of the arts - particularly poetry - were thriving in the midst of a post-industrial-revolution swell of excitement, creativity and new aesthetic "schools"; poetry, for its part, rolled out Imagism, Vorticism, Futurism, Chorism, and a rogue's gallery of other new poetic genres, each based on its own aesthetic theorizing. Appearing in the midst of this rather joyous and certainly passionate carnival were Emanuel Morgan, expatriate painter-turned-poet reunited with his native Pittsburgh, and his close friends and colleagues, the beautiful Hungarian poet (who wrote in Russian) Anna Knish, and barrister Elijah Hay. In 1916, Morgan and Knish took the poetry world by storm with their Spectrist school of poetry, which was based on three visions of the term - spectra, the task of the artist to perceived beauty in its component colors, rather than as the glorious white light in which it occurs naturally; the reflex vibrations of that same light which occur only within the artist, like the light phenomena in our eyes; and spectre, the yet more difficult task of uncovering the subtle, hidden spirits behind and within beauty. Morgan used regular rhymed stanza in his spectrism offerings, while Knish used only free verse, but they were attempting the same thing. The poetic world was quickly awash in discussion and analysis of the spectrist school; a few thought the intellectual foundation to be a bit pretentiously framed, others thought it strange that there had been no public appearances by the pair or their lawyer colleague Hay; but the fermenting, energetic world of poetry at the time was full of new voices and figures. No one seemed to take much note of the fact that some of the lines seemed a bit nonsensical, others downright humorous. After all, poetry had few rules, even then. Some were suspiscious, however, that many of the poems, especially in the duo's lead vehicle, the publication Spectra, didn't seem to fit, in any clear way, the espoused theory. Some uneasy suspicion about Morgan and Knish - and about poet/lecturers Witter Bynner and Arthur Ficke, who first wrote about them in depth - started to sprout. Finally, in 1918, a young student at the University of Wisconsin, after a lecture by poet Witter Bynner, asked Bynner if it were not true that he was, in fact, Emanuel Morgan, and that Ficke was, in fact, Knish. A bit wearied- even embarrassed - by the hoax by then [and knowing that his underlying goal of lampooning pretentious schools of poetry couldn't be consummated anyway, without revelation] , Bynner confessed all, including the fact that their supportive "briefless barrister", Elijah Hay, was another colleague, Marjorie Allen Seiffert. One of the greatest literary hoaxes in history was at an end. Although the identity of the young challenger is not known with certainty (it was not, Bynner let it be known, Horace Kallen, who at one time claimed the unmasking], there is some feeling that Kenneth L. Ball, to whom this volume was presented and inscribed "with a bow" by Bynner [signing as Emanuel Morgan], was that student.
