The Legend of Hobey Baker [Signed]

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1966. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good +. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, light wear to bottom corners), in a Very Good + dust jacket, CONTEMPORARILY INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY JOHN DAVIES on the front free endpaper as follows: "Christmas, 1966 // For Andy Ramseur / a future Hobey Baker / at least according to his grandfather // Best Wishes // John Davies". Hobey Baker, one of the greatest athletes of the early 20th Century and considered by many to be America's first star hockey player, played both hockey and football at Princeton University which named it hockey facility, the Hobey Baker Memorial Rink, after him. An inductee in the Hockey Hall of Fame (located in Toronto, Canada), Baker was the only American in the Hall's 1945 inaugural class of nine players, the others having been Canadian (one of which, Chuck Gardner, was born in the UK). America's National Collegiate Athletic Association annually awards the Hobey Baker Award to the individual voted that year's best collegiate hockey player. [The United States Hockey Hall of Fame was not founded until 1973 and Baker was one of it's initial inductees. Baker also was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975.] One of Baker's many admirers, F. Scott Fitzgerald -- who enrolled at Princeton during Baker's senior year, described Baker as "an ideal worthy of everything in my enthusiastic admiration, yet consummated and expressed in a human being who stood within ten feet of me" and modeled his character Allenby -- of his debut novel "This Side of Paradise" -- on Hobey Baker. After graduation, Baker worked for J. P. Morgan Bank until he enlisted in the US Army Air Service, was eventually promoted to commander of the 141st Aero Squadron and was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government. He died in 1918 after a recently repaired plane he was testing at his own insistence crashed. When he was pulled from the wreckage, his orders to return home to the US were found in his jacket pocket. In 1962, George Frazier wrote of Baker "he haunts a whole school, and from generation unto generation. You say 'Hobey Baker' and all of a sudden you see the gallantry of a world long since gone." Copies of the book in collectable condition are not common and copies signed by John Davis are, in our experience, as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good + copy, SIGNED BY JOHN DAVIES. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

EVERY BUILDING ON THE SUNSET STRIP - SIGNED BY EDWARD RUSCHA

(RUSCHA, EDWARD). Ruscha, Edward. EVERY BUILDING ON THE SUNSET STRIP - SIGNED BY EDWARD RUSCHA. Signed by the Artist. Los Angeles. 1966 (1970).: Self-Published, Second Printing 1/5000. 8vo. Leporello Wrappers in Slipcase. Artist's Book. Near Fine./No Jacket - As Issued.. One continuous accordion-fold page composed of glued paper segments extending to 296 1/2" in length housed in a white paper and silver Mylar-over-cardboard slipcase. "Every Building on the Sunset Strip" is Ed Ruscha's innovative 1966 photographic study that pictures sequentially each architectural facade on both the North and South sides of the fabled Sunset Strip from 8101 - the still extant Jaguar dealership - to 9156 - the late, great Schwab's Pharmacy. Pandora's Box lives! A bright, most handsome example of the 1970 second printing (entry B4 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999", and whose 1966 edition is cited on pages 142-143 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 198-199 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 182-185 of "The Book of 101 Books") limited to five thousand unnumbered copies additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Ed Ruscha" with three underlines in black ink on the inside front cover opposite the title page showing some very trivial soiling and creasing along the exposed spine along with some minor tiny brown speckling to covers. The slipcase is bright and crisp though showing a short clean separation starting at each of the two joints adjacent to the opening at the bottom edge. The publisher's exceedingly fragile and uncommon unprinted white paper wraparound band issued only with this edition is still present and intact. All in all, this is an exceptional copy of this important little gem.       Princeton, NJ: Atlantic Monthly Press [Little Brown and Company], 1966. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/near fine. A Very Good copy of the First American Edition, first printing (book askew, slight leftward lean, soiling to the page block edges, light handling soil to boards), in a Near Fine dust jacket (quite minor wear, modest soiling to the white rear panel and to the flap edges --- in excellent condition for an unlaminated dust jacket of this age), SIGNED AND INSCRIBED IN GREEK TO SEFERIS' FRIEND REX WARNER, WHO ALSO TRANSLATED THE BOOK AND PROVIDED THE BOOK'S INTRODUCTION, on the half-title, WITH THE OPENING LINES OF SEFERIS' FAMED POEM "Letter to Rex Warner" which, translated to English reads as follows: "At the time we met / you were telling the tale of the wild goose chase / in the kingdom of hermaphrodites; / there the football field / ....." [the last portion of the Poems first sentence, not included in the inscription but which sentence itself comprises the Poem's first stanza, states "had known a shameless slaughter." The balance of the stanza reads "I was returning from a marble stadium / where the obstinate marathon runner, wounded, / saw the track sailing in blood. / That way I came to understand you and we became friends."] This exceptional inscription reflects the relationship between these two close friends, fellow authors, and colleagues in the translation of Seferis' work for publication in English. It is worth noting here that Rex Warner's first novel was titled "The Wild Goose Chase" (1937) to which Seferis apparently refers in the inscription. Furthermore, Seferis was intensely curious as to why Cyprus had a disproportionate percentage of hermaphrodites in its population and, finally, was passionate about soccer. Certainly the two authors would have discussed these matters and the quotation reflects both these matters and their friendship. Certainly the ellipsis used by Seferis at the end of the inscription evidences his intent to include the balance of the Poem. In addition to their deep relationship as friends, each man held the other in high regard, and Warner's excellent translations of his work were a major factor in Seferis' winning the Prize. The book offered here constitutes the first publication of George Seferis' Essays in English. Seferis himself selected the Essays, written over a three-decade period, for this book. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. This copy belonged to Rex Warner, Seferis' good friend who, assisted by Th. D. Frangopoulos, translated the book into English and who authored the book's introduction. Signed copies of Seferis' works are extraordinarily scarce in any language, and our most recent search of the of the auction records shows no signed copies of his works coming to auction in the last 55 years. Altogether a Very Good + ASSOCIATION COPY of an extremely difficult-to-find book from the first Greek author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. RARE.

        Spare Parts

Athens: A New View Book (1966) - First Edition. Quarto. Number 740 of 850 numbered copies. Publisher's one-page prospectus laid in. SIGNED by Ford. One of the most ambitious American artists' books of the 60s, Spare Parts is comprised of a series of Ford's "Poem Posters" which directly reference Surrealist techniques, and which capitalize on Ford's experience in publishing, graphic design, and printing. Earthy, elegant and alternating sexual references with advertising come-ons, the "Poem Posters" were a particularly visual and outrageous form of concrete poetry, made up on the spot. Bottom edges and spine head a little worn; near fine in a near fine jacket with offsetting visible on the verso. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Arms and Influence.

Yale University Press, New Haven 1966 - First edition. Octavo, original red cloth. Signed by Thomas Schelling on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. A very nice copy of an important book, that is uncommon signed. In Arms and Influence, Nobel Prize-winning economist Thomas Schelling argues that bargaining power, and the exploitation of this power, for good or evil, to preserve peace or to threaten war, is diplomacy—the diplomacy of violence. The author concentrates in this book on the way in which military capabilities—real or imagined—are used, skillfully or clumsily, as bargaining power. He sees the steps taken by the U.S. during the Berlin and Cuban crises as not merely preparations for engagement, but as signals to an enemy, with reports from the adversary's own military intelligence as our most important diplomatic communications. Even the bombing of North Vietnam, Mr. Schelling points out, is as much coercive as tactical, aimed at decisions as much as bridges. "An exemplary text on the interplay of national purpose and military force" (Book Week). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Signed theatre programme.

Paris: Odéon - Théâtre de France, [1966] - Octavo. Single quire, wire-stitched into original pictorial paper wrappers. Light crease top right-hand corner of front wrapper. An excellent copy. Photographic illustrations and advertisements throughout. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by Beckett and Pinget on the same page, next to their photographic portraits: "Merci, cordialement, Samuel Beckett"; "Pour Madame [indecipherable], avec mes hommages, Robert Pinget". As part of its 1965–6 season he Odéon Theatre (or, Théâtre de France, now Théâtre de l'Europe) put on medley of theatre of the absurd, composed of five plays by Beckett, Ionesco and Pinget (abbreviated to BIP in the theatre's archive). The programme opened with Beckett's Comédie and Va-et-vient, followed by Pinget's one-man play L'Hypothèse, and closed with Ionesco's Lacune and Délire. This was the first production of Va-et-vient, which was directed by Jean-Marie Serreau. Comédie had previously been performed at Pavillon de Marsan, also in Paris. Beckett was one of Pinget's staunchest supporters at the beginning the latter's literary career and the two author's friendship regularly extended to exchanging translating services.
