The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are

NY: Pantheon. (1966). The book that most succinctly stated Watts's case for an interpretation of human nature that borrowed from Eastern religions and the mystical experience to attempt to shed the mind-body dualism of Western culture and religion, which he argues artificially -- and incorrectly -- separates us from our environment, our world, and ultimately ourselves. Watts was one of the early advocates of Zen in the West, and his books typically have an aspect of comparative religion, translating one culture's concepts into another's vocabulary. This one is the one that attempts most resolutely to delineate his insights and definitions in terms that are secular and Western; it also helped to provide the vocabulary for a generation that was experimenting with consciousness-altering psychedelic drugs, whose effects were often described in terms borrowed from the literature of Eastern mysticism. Inscribed by the author. Large but light stains to boards; very good in a very good, spine and edge-sunned dust jacket with a couple closed edge tears. A key volume in Watt's oeuvre, and seldom encountered signed. First Edition. Hardcover.

"TIMOTHY LEARY / THE POLITICS AND ETHICS OF ECSTASY": THE ORIGINAL POSTER FOR TIMOTHY LEARY'S APRIL 5, 1966 LECTURE AT TOWN HALL

[New York, April 5], [1966].. [1966].. Very good. - sc - A 22-1/2 inch high by 17-1/2 inch wide poster on white stock promoting Timothy Leary's lecture on "The Politics and Ethics of Ecstasy". The lecture was presented at New York's Town Hall. Boldly titled in shades of red along the top. Centered is an illustration of a hand reaching down to touch the head of a bodhisattva pictured in shades of orange, green and blue within radiant ripples. The location "Town Hall / 113 West 43 St. / Tues. April 5, 8 pm / Donation $2.00" is boldly printed in blue at the bottom between two lit candles whose smoke rises to frame the poster. The poster is slightly creased along the edges with a couple of faint minute chips to the bottom edge. Very good. Described by President Richard Nixon as "the most dangerous man in America", the American writer and psychologist Timothy Leary was known for his research into and advocacy of psychedelic drugs. With Richard Alpert, Leary conducted early experiments into the use of LSD and psilocybin at Harvard (the Harvard Psilocybin Project). He believed that LSD showed potential for use in psychiatry and is responsible for the popularity of the phrases "turn on, tune in, drop out" and "think for yourself and question authority".RARE.

        September Song

Vandal Publications Ltd 1966 - Illustrated poster (580 x 452 mm) printed b&w in wooden frame (680 x 551 mm). Subtitled 'A Gear Poster', with the instruction 'iron if creased'. This poetry broadside/poster, by one of the pioneers of the 1960s 'poster-poem', features the poem 'September Song' by Logue alongside a reprinted photograph of a dead cowboy in a casket. The man is Rube Burroughs, one of the last Western gunmen, killed in Sioux City in 1879. This image alludes to the narrative of the poem, that of a lone man, guilty of immoral actions, but resolute in death. Logue is forgiving of this alternative vagabond mentality: 'Be not too hard when he gladly dies / Defending things he does not own'. The poem has since become an icon of 1960s pop culture and counterculture: it was set to music by Donavan and heard in Ken Loach's filmic adaptation of Nell Dunn's famous novel Poor Cow, and was later made popular by Joan Baez on her 1967 album Joan. Condition: some general wear and handling marks to corners. Main body of the poster is clean and frame is in excellent condition. Near fine. Posting: framed item - can be collected from London or posted with cut MDF packaging - extra charges for shipping and handling will be applied.
