THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS (1st issue DJ $5.95)

      G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York 1966 - G. P. Putnam's Sons. New York. 1966. 383 pages. NF/VG. DJ is a 1st printing. Book is a 7th printing. Original 1st printing DJ with $5.95 price intact on flap. DJ is bright and nice. No stamps or stickers to DJ. No fading to DJ spine. DJ was preserved for 45 years under a wrapper and under the wrapper was this beauty, without any label stickers or darkening/fading. Inside flaps show small tape ghosts or fragments of leftover scotch tape from which the DJ was once adhered to protector. Hardly a flaw as again, this is only on the inside flaps. The DJ does show general rubbing, a few edge creases and some smaller light blemishes to the rear of DJ that has white borders framing a photo of heinlein. This is a perfect candidate for someone looking to marry their first printing to this 1st issue DJ. The $5.95 priced DJ is scarce. As for the book that was married to this DJ, it is NF. Not much keeping this copy from grading nearly fine. very light, faint soiling (if any) to page edges. Tight and clean. 7th printing. Book appears unread. Pages lay tight. A tiny, faint spot of discoloration along edge of cloth panel. Endpapers are bright and clean. This is a very nice copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        ASSEMBLAGE, ENVIRONMENTS & HAPPENINGS

New York: Abrams, (1966). First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Square folio. Very good in brown burlap covered boards. Sunning to lower edges, spine faded. Lacking original clear vinyl jacket. Else clean and sound throughout. INSCRIBED by Kaprow to early prelimi- nary: “For Paul on / his birthday - / A nostalgic / time in which / you played a / part (see pl. / 164 somewhere / deep inside!) / - in friendship / Allan K.” A founding document of performance and environmental art, and the first by a major publisher, KaprowÂ’s ASSEMBLAGE, ENVIRONMENTS & HAP- PENINGS was originally planned as an official Fluxus publication (see CODEX p. 288), but eventually evolved into this broader book. Artists covered include Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Red Grooms, and George Segal, with contributions from Wolf Vostell, George Brecht, Kaprow and others. The recipient is almost certainly photojournalist Paul Berg, whose photos are included in this volume and fall roughly where Kaprow suggests they should (though there is no plate 164). Berg photographed and covered KaprowÂ’s happening “Push and Pull” for the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1963. The uncommon hardcover issue of this important resource, it is scarce signed, especially with any kind of association. [ALLAN KAPROW: A Bibliography pp. 26-9].

5 Typed Letters Signed ("Bill Saroyan" and "Bill") to his agent H.N. Swanson ("Swanie")

Fresno, Califronia, 1966. 5 pp in all, typed rectos only. 4to (11 x 8-1/2 inches); two sheets cropped. Faint creases; secretarial marks in red ink. Corrections, cancellations, and annotations in Saroyan's hand. 5 pp in all, typed rectos only. 4to (11 x 8-1/2 inches); two sheets cropped. Saroyan, still bitter about the treatment he received from M.G.M. during the production of his screenplay THE HUMAN COMEDY, warily discusses the possibility working in Hollywood again on new works POINTY SHOES and MAMA GIRL, I LOVE YOU: "Now, Metro phoned me and wanted to make a deal but I drove them off, because Mayer cheated me on The Human Comedy, and because the new mob there refused to release TV rights in the book to me, and so on and so forth. Drove them off by saying I wanted a percentage and a quarter of a million dollars. O.K., the hell with it: now, though, may just be the time to make a deal on this novel." Unfortunately, the project stalls. From a later letter, included here: " ... I am presuming POINTY SHOES is dead, and good enough." In other letters, Saroyan investigates the logistics of making a film documenting his native town: "I have got to make me a little 5-hour movie about Fresno before the best part of it is torn down and forgotten, and that's happening right now." He discusses current and upcoming projects, mulls over various film and TV possibilities, but is still rankled by his old troubles with M.G.M.-" ... that stupid M.G.M. somehow legally got its sticky fingers on The Human Comedy TV rights, too, and has prevented me from making all kind of excellent deals on the property." Written in an easy, chatty style, these letters reveal a writer frustrated by past injustice but nevertheless determined to maintain his prodigious output while pushing for a new break.

        Crying of Lot 49

1966. PYNCHON, Thomas. The Crying of Lot 49.Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, (1966).First edition of Pynchon?'s second novel, his ?"haunting… tryst with America?" (New York Times), an especially fine copy in scarce original dust jacket."The wealth of invention is overwhelming… Pynchon's trick of sitting the action on the edge of absurdity without letting it fall off is carefully performed" (Parker, 20th Century Novel, 428). Crying of Lot 49 achieves "a haunting sequence of imagined human situations, typical and pathetic ones, fused with the particularized power that shows Pynchon's own obsession with the encoded messages of the American landscape. What is also noticeable… is that the major character is really Pynchon himself, Pynchon's voice with its capacity to move from the elegy to the epic catalogue… But then, how else should one imagine a tryst with America? And that is what this novel is" (New York Times).Mead A2.A fine copy.

The Legend of Hobey Baker [Signed]

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1966. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good +. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, light wear to bottom corners), in a Very Good + dust jacket, CONTEMPORARILY INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY JOHN DAVIES on the front free endpaper as follows: "Christmas, 1966 // For Andy Ramseur / a future Hobey Baker / at least according to his grandfather // Best Wishes // John Davies". Hobey Baker, one of the greatest athletes of the early 20th Century and considered by many to be America's first star hockey player, played both hockey and football at Princeton University which named it hockey facility, the Hobey Baker Memorial Rink, after him. An inductee in the Hockey Hall of Fame (located in Toronto, Canada), Baker was the only American in the Hall's 1945 inaugural class of nine players, the others having been Canadian (one of which, Chuck Gardner, was born in the UK). America's National Collegiate Athletic Association annually awards the Hobey Baker Award to the individual voted that year's best collegiate hockey player. [The United States Hockey Hall of Fame was not founded until 1973 and Baker was one of it's initial inductees. Baker also was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975.] One of Baker's many admirers, F. Scott Fitzgerald -- who enrolled at Princeton during Baker's senior year, described Baker as "an ideal worthy of everything in my enthusiastic admiration, yet consummated and expressed in a human being who stood within ten feet of me" and modeled his character Allenby -- of his debut novel "This Side of Paradise" -- on Hobey Baker. After graduation, Baker worked for J. P. Morgan Bank until he enlisted in the US Army Air Service, was eventually promoted to commander of the 141st Aero Squadron and was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government. He died in 1918 after a recently repaired plane he was testing at his own insistence crashed. When he was pulled from the wreckage, his orders to return home to the US were found in his jacket pocket. In 1962, George Frazier wrote of Baker "he haunts a whole school, and from generation unto generation. You say 'Hobey Baker' and all of a sudden you see the gallantry of a world long since gone." Copies of the book in collectable condition are not common and copies signed by John Davis are, in our experience, as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good + copy, SIGNED BY JOHN DAVIES. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

        The Magus

London: Jonathan Cape, 1966. First edition of the author's most well-known work. Octavo. Signed by John Fowles on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A superior example. The Magus was published by in the United Kingdom in 1966 and in the United States by Little, Brown and Company the same year. An instant success, the Sunday Telegraph called it a major work of mounting tensions in which the human mind is the guinea-pig... Mr Fowles has taken a big swing at a difficult subject and his hits...are on the bull's eye'." The Magus was quickly adapted into film starring Michael Cain, a "deliciously toothsome celebration of wanton story-telling... Before one quite realises what is happenings, one finds oneself no less avid for meanings and no less starving amid a plethora of clues than is Nicholas himself" (Sunday Times). The Magus was awarded inclusion in the Modern Library 100 Best Novels in 1999, and in 2003, the novel was listed at number 67 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.

Paris: Odéon - Théâtre de France,, [1966]. Octavo. Single quire, wire-stitched into original pictorial paper wrappers. Photographic illustrations and advertisements throughout. Light crease top right-hand corner of front wrapper. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by Beckett and Pinget on the same page, next to their photographic portraits: "Merci, cordialement, Samuel Beckett"; "Pour Madame [indecipherable], avec mes hommages, Robert Pinget". As part of its 1965?-6 season he Odéon Theatre (or, Théâtre de France, now Théâtre de l'Europe) put on medley of theatre of the absurd, composed of five plays by Beckett, Ionesco and Pinget (abbreviated to BIP in the theatre's archive). The programme opened with Beckett's Comédie and Va-et-vient, followed by Pinget's one-man play L'Hypothèse, and closed with Ionesco's Lacune and Délire. This was the first production of Va-et-vient, which was directed by Jean-Marie Serreau. Comédie had previously been performed at Pavillon de Marsan, also in Paris. Beckett was one of Pinget's staunchest supporters at the beginning the latter's literary career and the two author's friendship regularly extended to exchanging translating services.

The Legend of Hobey Baker [Signed]

Little, Brown and Company, 1966, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good +, Dust Jacket Condition: very good +, First edition.

Winston S Churchill: The Official Biography, full set of 8 volumes in uniform, solid color dust jackets

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1966. First editions. Hardcover. This a superior, full eight-volume set of the eight main text volumes of the Official Biography of Winston S. Churchill. The Official Biography was begun by WinstonÂ’s son, Randolph Churchill (1911-1968), and completed by Sir Martin Gilbert (1936-2015). In 1962, at the age of 25, Martin Gilbert joined Churchill's biography team, then led by Churchill's son Randolph. Of what became his life's work, Gilbert says: "I'd thought I'd last four or five months." Instead, when Randolph died in 1968 with only two of the eight volumes completed, Gilbert took over, committing the substantial portion of his scholarship and life's work to documenting, comprehending, and communicating what Gilbert calls the "remarkable and versatile life" of Winston Churchill. The result is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. The British first editions of the eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Together they claim 19 inches of shelf space, weigh more than 28 pounds, and fill nearly 8,700 pages. Offered here is a superior set of all eight volumes. Several things distinguish this set. All eight volumes are British first editions. All eight volumes are in their original, uniform, solid color dust jackets and uniform red cloth bindings with red topstain. (The final three volumes were also issued in a cheaper “popular edition” with illustrated dust jackets, different color bindings, and no red topstain.) Moreover, all eight volumes are in near fine or better condition, in near fine or better dust jackets. Finally, shelf presentation is excellent. The solid color dust jackets – particularly those for Volumes III, IV, V, VIII & VIII – were particularly prone to spine fading. Here all eight dust jackets retain perfect, bright color with no color difference between the jacket spines and front faces. The jackets very from truly fine to near fine. The only trivial loss to report is at the upper right hinge of Volume II. All of the original front flap prices remain intact with the sole exception of the Volume VI dust jacket, which is neatly clipped but otherwise quite fine. All eight dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. The uniform red cloth bindings of all eight volumes are square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The contents of all eight volumes are uniformly bright. We find no spotting whatsoever and no previous ownership marks. The red-stained top edges all retain strong color, with minor variations perhaps attributable to slight sunning on Volumes II, VII & VIII, but also reasonably attributable to the fact that the volumes were published over a span of 22 years. Please note that this is a large and heavy set that will likely require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301a-h.

Originally published by Scribner in 1966, this edition is INSCRIBED BY BROWN to a person who helped her with the original edition of the book: "To Margaret, Our old labors in a new color, but looking good because of your lovely work. With much love, Marcia." SOLD WITH A CLOTH FOLDER HOLDING A COMPLETE SET OF THE LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTS USED IN THE BOOK, PULLED ON JAPANESE TISSUE AND EACH SIGNED BY BROWN! The inscription on the prints has the title in Marcia Brown's hand, giving the folder to Margaret A. Evans signed and dated June 1966. The text of the book retells an ancient Hawaiian legend of a brave young boy who endeavors to restore his father to his position of royal guardian to the king. It is based on a 19th century version of the story by Moses Nakuina. Brown discovered the legend on a trip to Hawaii and spent 12 months painting in preparation for the book.
