        Illustrations for the Bible

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. First Edition. Fine/Good. First American edition, INSCRIBED BY CHAGALL AND WITH STUNNING ORIGINAL FULL-PAGE COLOR DRAWING of Moses receiving the tablets on title page. With important provenance. The astonishing original Chagall drawing, which fills nearly the entire title page (10.5x14 inches) depicts Moses receiving the Ten Commandments with an angel to his side. On the right border a dove emerges from a tree and above all is a rich, blue sky. Composed with orange, blue, and green crayons, pencil, and ink. Complete with 16 lithographs in color, 12 in black and white, plus the lithograph cover and title page, all specially created for this book. Also illustrated with reproductions in heliogravure of the 105 etchings made by Chagall for the illustrations of the Bible. Provenance: Inscribed by Chagall: "Pour Lenette et George Nayor --> NJ 1966 Marc Chagall" and from the collection of Herman Krawitz, former assistant general manager of the Metropolitan Opera House. Krawitz was the son-in-law of the dedicatees Lenette and George Nayor. "Herman Krawitz worked for the Metropolitan Opera for nineteen years, with nine of those years as Assistant General Manager. During this time he worked closely with Marc Chagall... In 1966, Chagall painted two monumental murals for the outside of the Metropolitan Opera in New York... On display in the lobby, the murals are approximately 30 ft (9.1 m) by 36 ft (11 m) and visible to the outside plaza. The south wall holds the work entitled The Triumph of Music while the north wall contains The Sources of Music" (Llyn Towner, "Herman Krawitz 'Working with Chagall'"). Note: The inscription is dated 1966, the same year Krawitz was working with Chagall on the murals. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1956. Folio, original pictorial (lithographed) boards, original dust jacket. Book with tape residue to endpapers, otherwise book and lithographs fine; extremely scarce dust jacket (almost never seen) with chipping, edgewear, and damage to spine.         Fantastic Voyage (Original one-sheet poster, Style D)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1966. Original one sheet poster, designed as a pin-up, for the 1966 science fiction film. The very scarce Style D poster--the kind of thing you honestly couldn't put up in a movie house these days--featuring a young and exquisitely beautiful Raquel Welch in all her glory. Oddly, a far superior image to the more famous one from "One Million Years B.C.," also released in 1966. This particular poster variant is a lithograph print, produced in very small numbers, in an non-standard, smaller size than that of a typical one sheet for the mid-1960s. 13.5 x 22 inches, Fine condition.

Trust [Proof Copy Signed by John Barth]

New American Library, (NY) 1966 - The uncorrected proof copy of her first book, one of a handful of literary first novels published by NAL during the mid-60s, including John Gardner's The Resurrection and William Gass's Omensetter's Luck. Tall, comb-bound galley sheets. Laid in is a letter sent by editor David Segal to author John Barth, sending him "yet another first novel" and requesting "the pleasure of reading your opinion," as it appears Barth had made it clear that he would not be offering "a quotable quote." A noteworthy letter: Segal took over the newly founded hardcover publishing branch of New American Library, which previously had specialized in paperback publishing only -- notably the Signet and Mentor imprints, which reprinted classics and bestsellers. Segal immediately began publishing literary fiction by young, unknown writers, and in the course of a couple of years introduced William Gass, John Gardner, Michael Shaara, Alice Adams and Cynthia Ozick to the world, all of whom went on to become major American authors. It's a bit surprising that Barth would have been averse to providing a "quotable quote" for the likes of these, but apparently that was the case. This copy is signed by Barth on the first page and with his address stamp on the front cover. Ozick's name was left off the cover and has been added in ink. Mild sunning and curling to the covers; small tear at upper spine; about near fine. A very scarce proof of an important first book, and a copy with exceptionally interesting provenance.         Dengler [Vietnam Exclusive: I Escaped from a Red Prison] (Original corrected manuscript)

N.p.: N.p., 1966. Heavily corrected original typescript for a story by Dieter Dengler and ghost-writer Trevor Armbrister, "Dengler" (here with the hand-corrected title, "Vietnam Exclusive: I Escaped from a Red Prison"). The story first appeared in the December 3, 1966 issue of the "Saturday Evening Post," and was adapted many years later by noted German director Werner Herzog for his 1997 documentary film, "Little Dieter Needs to Fly," then remade by him in 2006 as a dramatic version titled "Rescue Dawn," starring Christian Bale as Dengler. Source material for Herzog's films, often highly improvised affairs, is rare. This manuscript is the earliest corrected form of the story that would be adapted into two of his finest efforts. 64 leaves on white stock with yellow revision pages inserted throughout, with profuse substantive holograph corrections in pencil, red pencil, black ink and red ink throughout. Title page integral with the first page of text, rubber-stamped No. 40304.

Light ring stain to front board, corners just lightly rubbed, a very smart copy. Twelve works of photography reproduced in sheet-fed gravure. First edition, first printing.         A Photographic Record of the Mount Shisha Pangma Scientific Expedition.

Peking. Science Press.1966. 29 x 23,5 cm. (42) Bl. Original Cloth with gilt back and gilt title. Blotchy. Foreword: China is a land with numerous lofty mountains and highlands. The Tibetan Plateau, reputed as \" the roof of the world \", is particularly known for its vast sierras - chains of mountains striving for mastery and splendour at dazzling altitudes. To reach these heights, to conquer the beetling peaks hitherto destitute of human traces and to carry out extensice scientific investigations of the climatic conditions and natural resources in these regions in the interest of our socialist construction, are arduous but glorious tasks to be accomplished by Chinese scientist. Mount Shisha Pangma, standing in Nyenyam County, Tibetan Autonomous Region, China, was the last of the world`s fourteen lofty peaks over 8,000 m in heigt that had remained unconquered until 1964. The Chinese mountaineering expedition, in an ambitious undertaking to conquer nature and after undergoing all hardships and surmounting difficulty after diffuculty, finally reached the 8,012 m main peak of Mt. Shisha Pangma triumphantly at 10:20 a. m. Peking standard time on May 2, 1964 and placed our fivestarred national flag and a bust of Chairman Mao on the summit. This is another glorious feat the Chines mountaineers have accomplished for our people and motherland.......The photograpic pictures carefully selected and reproduced in this collection are the true records of the Shisha Pangma Scientific Expedition. They are intended to summarize the scientific findings of the glaciological, geological, geomorphological and biological investigations in the Shisha Pangma region and to reflect the Tibetan landscapes and the wonders of nature in their luxuriant beauty. These are the \" summits commanding amazingly beautiful views \". But there are in China many more such lofty mountains and precarious peaks to be conquered and still numberless heights of scientific achievement to be reached by our scientist. The publication of this collection of photographic pictures ist, therefor, intended only as a few drum beats to join the militant chorus of our scientists, who will continue to hold aloft the red banner of Mao Tse-tung`s thinking and assail many more summits in the different fields of their work.; - Permanent Illustr., with black/white and a few color photography, with Library label of Richard Reger. - In very good condition.       New York: Abrams, (1966). First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Square folio. Very good in brown burlap covered boards. Sunning to lower edges, spine faded. Lacking original clear vinyl jacket. Else clean and sound throughout. INSCRIBED by Kaprow to early prelimi- nary: ?"For Paul on / his birthday - / A nostalgic / time in which / you played a / part (see pl. / 164 somewhere / deep inside!) / - in friendship / Allan K.?" A founding document of performance and environmental art, and the first by a major publisher, Kaprow?'s ASSEMBLAGE, ENVIRONMENTS & HAP- PENINGS was originally planned as an official Fluxus publication (see CODEX p. 288), but eventually evolved into this broader book. Artists covered include Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Red Grooms, and George Segal, with contributions from Wolf Vostell, George Brecht, Kaprow and others. The recipient is almost certainly photojournalist Paul Berg, whose photos are included in this volume and fall roughly where Kaprow suggests they should (though there is no plate 164). Berg photographed and covered Kaprow?'s happening ?"Push and Pull?" for the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1963. The uncommon hardcover issue of this important resource, it is scarce signed, especially with any kind of association. [ALLAN KAPROW: A Bibliography pp. 26-9].
