        Crying of Lot 49

1966. PYNCHON, Thomas. The Crying of Lot 49.Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, (1966).First edition of Pynchon?'s second novel, his ?"haunting… tryst with America?" (New York Times), an especially fine copy in scarce original dust jacket."The wealth of invention is overwhelming… Pynchon's trick of sitting the action on the edge of absurdity without letting it fall off is carefully performed" (Parker, 20th Century Novel, 428). Crying of Lot 49 achieves "a haunting sequence of imagined human situations, typical and pathetic ones, fused with the particularized power that shows Pynchon's own obsession with the encoded messages of the American landscape. What is also noticeable… is that the major character is really Pynchon himself, Pynchon's voice with its capacity to move from the elegy to the epic catalogue… But then, how else should one imagine a tryst with America? And that is what this novel is" (New York Times).Mead A2.A fine copy.

The Legend of Hobey Baker [Signed]

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1966. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good +. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, light wear to bottom corners), in a Very Good + dust jacket, CONTEMPORARILY INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY JOHN DAVIES on the front free endpaper as follows: "Christmas, 1966 // For Andy Ramseur / a future Hobey Baker / at least according to his grandfather // Best Wishes // John Davies". Hobey Baker, one of the greatest athletes of the early 20th Century and considered by many to be America's first star hockey player, played both hockey and football at Princeton University which named it hockey facility, the Hobey Baker Memorial Rink, after him. An inductee in the Hockey Hall of Fame (located in Toronto, Canada), Baker was the only American in the Hall's 1945 inaugural class of nine players, the others having been Canadian (one of which, Chuck Gardner, was born in the UK). America's National Collegiate Athletic Association annually awards the Hobey Baker Award to the individual voted that year's best collegiate hockey player. [The United States Hockey Hall of Fame was not founded until 1973 and Baker was one of it's initial inductees. Baker also was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975.] One of Baker's many admirers, F. Scott Fitzgerald -- who enrolled at Princeton during Baker's senior year, described Baker as "an ideal worthy of everything in my enthusiastic admiration, yet consummated and expressed in a human being who stood within ten feet of me" and modeled his character Allenby -- of his debut novel "This Side of Paradise" -- on Hobey Baker. After graduation, Baker worked for J. P. Morgan Bank until he enlisted in the US Army Air Service, was eventually promoted to commander of the 141st Aero Squadron and was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government. He died in 1918 after a recently repaired plane he was testing at his own insistence crashed. When he was pulled from the wreckage, his orders to return home to the US were found in his jacket pocket. In 1962, George Frazier wrote of Baker "he haunts a whole school, and from generation unto generation. You say 'Hobey Baker' and all of a sudden you see the gallantry of a world long since gone." Copies of the book in collectable condition are not common and copies signed by John Davis are, in our experience, as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good + copy, SIGNED BY JOHN DAVIES. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

        The Magus

London: Jonathan Cape, 1966. First edition of the author's most well-known work. Octavo. Signed by John Fowles on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A superior example. The Magus was published by in the United Kingdom in 1966 and in the United States by Little, Brown and Company the same year. An instant success, the Sunday Telegraph called it a major work of mounting tensions in which the human mind is the guinea-pig... Mr Fowles has taken a big swing at a difficult subject and his hits...are on the bull's eye'." The Magus was quickly adapted into film starring Michael Cain, a "deliciously toothsome celebration of wanton story-telling... Before one quite realises what is happenings, one finds oneself no less avid for meanings and no less starving amid a plethora of clues than is Nicholas himself" (Sunday Times). The Magus was awarded inclusion in the Modern Library 100 Best Novels in 1999, and in 2003, the novel was listed at number 67 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.

        Signed theatre programme.

Paris: Odéon - Théâtre de France,, [1966]. Octavo. Single quire, wire-stitched into original pictorial paper wrappers. Photographic illustrations and advertisements throughout. Light crease top right-hand corner of front wrapper. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by Beckett and Pinget on the same page, next to their photographic portraits: "Merci, cordialement, Samuel Beckett"; "Pour Madame [indecipherable], avec mes hommages, Robert Pinget". As part of its 1965?-6 season he Odéon Theatre (or, Théâtre de France, now Théâtre de l'Europe) put on medley of theatre of the absurd, composed of five plays by Beckett, Ionesco and Pinget (abbreviated to BIP in the theatre's archive). The programme opened with Beckett's Comédie and Va-et-vient, followed by Pinget's one-man play L'Hypothèse, and closed with Ionesco's Lacune and Délire. This was the first production of Va-et-vient, which was directed by Jean-Marie Serreau. Comédie had previously been performed at Pavillon de Marsan, also in Paris. Beckett was one of Pinget's staunchest supporters at the beginning the latter's literary career and the two author's friendship regularly extended to exchanging translating services.

Winston S Churchill: The Official Biography, full set of 8 volumes in uniform, solid color dust jackets

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1966. First editions. Hardcover. This a superior, full eight-volume set of the eight main text volumes of the Official Biography of Winston S. Churchill. The Official Biography was begun by WinstonÂ’s son, Randolph Churchill (1911-1968), and completed by Sir Martin Gilbert (1936-2015). In 1962, at the age of 25, Martin Gilbert joined Churchill's biography team, then led by Churchill's son Randolph. Of what became his life's work, Gilbert says: "I'd thought I'd last four or five months." Instead, when Randolph died in 1968 with only two of the eight volumes completed, Gilbert took over, committing the substantial portion of his scholarship and life's work to documenting, comprehending, and communicating what Gilbert calls the "remarkable and versatile life" of Winston Churchill. The result is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. The British first editions of the eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Together they claim 19 inches of shelf space, weigh more than 28 pounds, and fill nearly 8,700 pages. Offered here is a superior set of all eight volumes. Several things distinguish this set. All eight volumes are British first editions. All eight volumes are in their original, uniform, solid color dust jackets and uniform red cloth bindings with red topstain. (The final three volumes were also issued in a cheaper “popular edition” with illustrated dust jackets, different color bindings, and no red topstain.) Moreover, all eight volumes are in near fine or better condition, in near fine or better dust jackets. Finally, shelf presentation is excellent. The solid color dust jackets – particularly those for Volumes III, IV, V, VIII & VIII – were particularly prone to spine fading. Here all eight dust jackets retain perfect, bright color with no color difference between the jacket spines and front faces. The jackets very from truly fine to near fine. The only trivial loss to report is at the upper right hinge of Volume II. All of the original front flap prices remain intact with the sole exception of the Volume VI dust jacket, which is neatly clipped but otherwise quite fine. All eight dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. The uniform red cloth bindings of all eight volumes are square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The contents of all eight volumes are uniformly bright. We find no spotting whatsoever and no previous ownership marks. The red-stained top edges all retain strong color, with minor variations perhaps attributable to slight sunning on Volumes II, VII & VIII, but also reasonably attributable to the fact that the volumes were published over a span of 22 years. Please note that this is a large and heavy set that will likely require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301a-h.

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Volume I, Youth, 1874-1900, a family association copy inscribed for Winston Churchill's godson by the author, Winston Churchill's son

William Heinemann Ltd., London 1966 - Here is the first edition, first printing of Volume I of the Official Biography of Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill, with a presentation inscription by the author, Winston’s son, Randolph S. Churchill, to Roger Frewen, Winston’s godson. The inked inscription on the half title reads thus in four lines: "Inscribed for | Roger Frewen | by | Randolph S. Churchill". The inscription is undated, but was necessarily done between 1966, when the book was published, and June 1968, when Randolph died. Roger Frewen’s bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown, below which is inked "Brede Place | 1966". Brede Place was the Frewen family home in Brede, East Sussex. This book comes to us from the Frewen collection, which includes copies of Churchill’s books spanning more than half a century, from 1906 to 1958, and three generations of Churchill’s relatives on his mother’s side, including his Aunt Clara and her descendants. Roger d'Hauteville Moreton Frewen (1914-1972) was the son of Churchill's first cousin, Hugh Frewen, and grandson of Churchill's Aunt Clara, his mother's elder sister. Hugh's childhood was marked by visits with his Churchill and Leslie cousins, including Winston, who was nine years older than Hugh. Roger was born in London during the First World War while his father was serving on the front and Winston was First Lord of the Admiralty. Roger was educated in Switzerland and Cambridge. In 1933, Roger suffered a near-fatal car accident. This and tuberculosis contracted during recovery permanently impaired his health. Nonetheless, Roger joined the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1938. Posted to the British Embassy in Berne during WWII, Roger listened to German and Italian military signals and reported information to Britain, drove lorries with military supplies through occupied France, and rescued escaped prisoners of war by crossing into Germany and Italy and bringing them to safety in Switzerland. Driven by income needs as his family grew, in the decades after the war Roger had careers in finance and real estate. Roger's son, Jonathan, from whom this book comes to us, recalls that Roger excelled at mathematics and languages and was "a kind man, an amusing raconteur. and a good Father." Jonathan also recalls that "Winston was an excellent godparent" who "never forgot a birthday or Christmas, no matter his duties." The Frewen collection includes books by Churchill inscribed to his godson spanning 1930 to the mid 1950s. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill was begun by Randolph Churchill, who authored the first two main text volumes and accompanying document volumes before his death, after which the work was taken up Martin Gilbert. The British first editions of the eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. This first volume spans the years 1874 to 1900, from Churchill's birth, to his early career as a soldier and war correspondent, to his return to England from an American lecture tour in order to embark on his storied political career. Condition of this inscribed family association copy is good plus in a good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt, but suffers some mottling of the red cover along the front cover fore edge and rear cover bottom edge, as well as a triangle of sunning at the spine head corresponding to a dust jacket loss. The contents remain bright with a crisp feel and retain unfaded red topstain. While we find no internal spotting, we do note both spotting to the fore and bottom page edges and some stray ink marks to the bottom edge. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original front flap price but worn, with a 1.25 inch deep triangular loss at the spine head, lesser losses to the corners and bottom edge of the front face, and general wear to extremities. The dust jacket is newly protected with a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301a [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
