New York: Walker and Company. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover, slipcase. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 100 COPIES SIGNED BY DE KOONING. A beautiful copy in the rare original slipcase. "This volume reproduces, in exact size, 24 charcoal drawings executed by de Kooning in 1966. Clarke & Way, Inc. and Crafton Graphics Company, Inc., New York, have produced the book which was designed by Julio Silva of Paris." As de Kooning notes on the final page: "I am the source of a rumor concerning these drawings, and it is true that I made them with closed eyes... Also, the pad I used was always held horizontally. The drawings often started by the feet… but more of ten by the center of the body, in the middle of the page.

"There is nothing special about this, I admit, and I am certain that many artists have found similar ways… but I found that closing the eyes was very helpful to me... Many drawings were made this way, and it was suggested to make this book. I was very pleased with the idea and these 24 drawings were selected."

New York: Walker and Company, 1967. Quarto, original printed boards, original dust jacket; original slipcase. Extremely faint evidence of pencil inscription on front free endpaper; a small spot of soiling to cloth edge. Dust jacket price-clipped (as usual) and with mild toning to spine. A very clean, well-preserved copy in the rare slipcase.

        Yarns for Davy Jones

Privately printed for the author, np 1966 - First edition. Frontispiece & 16 full page illustrations. [viii], 146 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. AN EARLY REPORT ON KIWI HERMIT TOM NEALE. Inscribed to Percy Chubb by the author, Parkinson has also signed his name to the title-page. The TLS dated, March 29, 1970 concerns sailing matters relating to his crossing of the Atlantic.Parkinson spent a good deal of his life at sea and relates numerous anecdotes here, including some from serving in the Pacific in the closing stages of World War Two and another witnessing the atomic tests at Bikini Atoll. Of special interest is the chapter devoted to Surrarow Island, which came as part of a cruise he made with his wife and others in 1963. The schooner Westward was completing a circumnavigation and they joined her at Tahiti before proceding to Bora Bora and then laying a course for American Samoa.Suvarov (Suwarrow) Island was discovered in 1814 by Mikhail Lazarev. It is half a mile long and 400 yards wide with one of the finest lagoons in the South Pacific. Parkinson spent three days there in 1963 with his wife and Mr and Mrs Drayton Cochrane who were circumnavigating in stages on the Westward.Parkinson and his crew were surprised to find the island was inhabited. Unknown to all but very few people, Tom Neale, the New Zealand sailor and survivalist, had been living on the island since 1960 and "it was not surprising he talked almost incessantly, chiefly about his experiences on Suvarov." It transpired that this was his second stint on the island, having previously lived there 1952-4. In between visits "he married a Tongan woman and had two children but" Parkinson states, "his return to Suvarov without her is not unusual by South Pacific standards." He remained on the island until 1964. Parkinson's description of their encounter with Neale is one of great admiration and fascination and accordingly filled with details of his life and notes the people who'd visited him over the years. This is one of the earliest reports on Neale, published in the same year as Neale's autobiography. Royalties from Neale's book funded his final and longest stay on Suwarrow (1967-77) and only illness forced him to leave. Neale was born in Wellington, in 1902 though moved to Greymouth and then Timaru as a child. He joined the New Zealand navy as an apprentice engineer though bought himself out after four years and commenced his peripatetic life.Rare. OCLC locates just five copies. Fine. Original red buckram, spine and upper board gilt. Presentation inscription to front free endpaper, TLS laid down to rear free endpaper Frontispiece & 16 full page illustrations.         "Brakhage" in Film-Makers' Cinematheque Monograph Series No. 2, with typed note signed from Jane Brakhage

New York: Film-Makers' Cinematheque, 1966. First Edition. First Edition. The second issue of a monograph series published by Jonas Mekas' Film-makers' Cinematheque. With a brief typed note signed by Stan Brakhage's wife, Jane Brakhage, to a Jim Adams in San Francisco, letting Mr. Adams know where a copy of the journal "Metaphors" can be ordered. Also included in a tall side-stitched two-color 1971 catalog listing Brakhage films for sale. A series previously unknown to us and apparently short-lived. The entirety of this issue is devoted a story called "Brakhage" by Dan Clark, an experimental fiction in which an invented "critic" analyzes 28 actual Brakhage films (beginning with Interim in 1952 and ending with "The Art of Vision" in 1964) in exhaustive detail, revealing via minutae both the character of Brakhage and the critic. While the author emphasizes in his introduction that the entire effort is "imaginary," it is in fact one of the earliest and most thorough analyses of Brakhage's work.

        Beautiful Losers.

New York: Viking Press, 1966. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Leonard Cohen on the title page. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Beautiful Losers is an expression of the 1960's. Leonard Cohen wrote it while fasting and consuming amphetamines to focus his creativity. The product is a complex novel that uses a range of literary techniques, allusions, and symbolism (Adria, 1990). It is noted for its excesses of language and sexuality, and it is filled with the mysticism and drug-use that is emblematic of the era (Goldie, 2003). In a similar manner, the plot is not a linear, coherent progression. Key scenes repeat themselves, and there is no intelligible timeline. Beautiful Loser's gained great popularity when Cohen turned from writer to popular singer-songwriter, and it is remembered for having introduced postmodernism to the Canadian literary canon.

Extension of the Algebra of Poincare Group Generators and Violation of p Invariance" in JETP Letters: A Translation of JETP Pis';ma v Redaktsiyu of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, 13, No. 8, April 20, 1971 pp. 323-326

RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of the paper which pioneered the modern concept of what would later become known as supersymmetry. (A supersymmetry relating mesons and baryons was proposed by Miyazawa in 1966, but did not involve spacetime and was largely ignored). Gol'fand and Likhtman's 1971 work is "the first paper on (relativistic) spacetime supersymmetry" (Baer, Weak Scale Supersymmetry: 3.1a). In particle physics, Supersymmetry as a proposed type of spacetime symmetry  relates two basic classes of elementary particles: bosons, which have an integer-valued spin, and fermions, which have a half-integer spin (Haber, Supersymmetry, Part I, PDG, 8 July 2015). Involving Fermi-Bose symmetry transformation, at the level of quantum mechanics, suypersymmetry employs a quantum operator - or a Q - whose job is to turn bosons into fermions and vice versa. While supersymmetry is now integral to particle physics research, it is interesting to note that this was in no way the intent or subject of Folfand and Likhtman's paper. "Rather than trying to add fermions to a bosonic theory, they were exploring the mathematics of space-time with the primary motivation to do something exotic with the group theory of spacetime symmetries. "The usual group of spacetime symmetries in relativistic quantum field theory is called the Poincare' group. This group includes symmetries under spatial rotations, spacetime boosts and translations in space and time. The action of the  group can be described by the algebra of the group, which is defined by a set of commutation relations between the generators of infinitesimal group transformations. These are all bosonic symmetries, which ought to be so because momentum  conservation and Lorentz invariance are present in classical physics. "But the Poincare' group also has representations that describe fermions. Since spin 1/2 particles arise as solutions to a relativistically invariant equation -- the Dirac equation -- this is to be expected. If there are spin 1/2 particles, could there be spin 1/2 symmetry generators in a spacetime symmetry algebra? Yes! By introducing such symmetry generators Gol'fand and Likhtman have constructed the first example of supercharges mentioned above. What Gol'fand and Likhtman ended up with was the group theory of supersymmetric transformations in four spacetime dimensions, and using this new type of symmetry, they constructed the first supersymmetric quantum field theory" (JETP Letters, 12/29/2013). CONDITION & DETAILS: Individual issue in original wraps. Lancaster, Pennsylvania: American Institute of Physics. 4to (11 x 8.5; 275 x 213mm). Ex-libris with stamp on front wrap (see scan) and no other markings whatsoever. Near fine condition - clean, bright, and tightly bound.

Arthur Penn, Warren Beatty, and Faye Dunaway on the set of "Bonnie and Clyde"

N.p.: N.p., 1966. Original oversize, double weight, borderless photograph of director Arthur Penn and actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway on location in rural Texas during the shooting of "Bonnie and Clyde" during the fall of 1966. Faye Dunaway is brandishing a pistol while Penn describes a scene and Beatty looks on. Photographed by Lee Johnson for the Gamma agency, with Thompson's rubber stamp on the verso, along with a later stamp for the French press agency V.I.P. The beginning of the New Hollywood Cinema. Screenwriters Robert Benton and David Newman shopped their script about the notorious 1920s gangsters to every major American studio, then to Francois Truffaut, and then to Jean-Luc Godard, all to absolutely no avail. A young and reckless Warren Beatty, already an established Hollywood bad boy, took an interest and brought on director Arthur Penn and, for a rewrite, screenwriter Robert Towne. According to legend, Beatty begged Jack Warner on bended knee to green light the production, after which the film barely got an initial release. Eventually, due more to studio politics than interest in the film, it received a general release, due mostly to huge political upheavals at Warner Brothers, whereupon it became a box office smash. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9.5 x 14 inches. Some faint, shallow creasing at a couple of corners, else bright and quite striking.
