A General Theory of Rational Behavior in Game Situations'. Pp. 613-634 in: Econometrica, Vol. 34, No. 3, July, 1966.

1966 1966 - Entire issue offered. Original wrappers. Near Fine. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 1994 was awarded jointly to John C. Harsanyi, John F. Nash Jr. and Reinhard Selten 'for their pioneering analysis of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games.' 'In his paper 'A General Theory of Rational Behavior in Game Situations' John Harsanyi gave the, now, most commonly used definition to distinguish between cooperative and non-cooperative games. A game is cooperative if commitments--agreements, promises, threats--are fully binding and enforceable. It is non-cooperative if commitments are not enforceable' (Paul Walker, 'A Chronology of Game Theory'; www [dot] econ [dot] canterbury [dot] ac [dot] nz/personal_pages/paul_walker/gt/hist [dot] htm). 'Most of the research today is following the classification of Harsanyi (1966) regarding cooperative vs. non-cooperative game theory. He defines a cooperative game as a game where commitments are fully binding and enforceable' (Julia Drechsel, Cooperative Lot Sizing Games in Supply Chains, 2010, p. 7).         Winston S. Churchill: The Official Biography, a full set of British first editions, comprising 8 main text volumes (signed by the author in the final volume) and 16 accompanying document volumes

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1966. First editions. Hardcover. This is a full, British first edition set of the Official Biography of Winston S. Churchill, signed by the author in the final main text volume. The author?s signature is inked in blue just below his printed name on the Volume VIII title page. The Official Biography was begun by Winston?s son, Randolph Churchill (1911-1968), and completed by Sir Martin Gilbert (1936-2015). In 1962, at the age of 25, Martin Gilbert joined Churchill's biography team, then led by Churchill's son Randolph. Of what became his life's work, Gilbert says: "I'd thought I'd last four or five months." Instead, when Randolph died in 1968 with only two of the eight volumes completed, Gilbert took over, committing the substantial portion of his scholarship and life's work to documenting, comprehending, and communicating what Gilbert called the "remarkable and versatile life" of Winston Churchill. The result is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. The British first editions of the eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Each of the first six main text volumes was accompanied by either two or three volumes of documents, titled ?Companion? volumes. Under Sir Martin?s authorship, 16 of these document volumes were completed (with documents spanning 1874-1941). While additional documents volumes for the balance of the official biography will be issued in the U.S. by Hillsdale College under different authorship, a full British first edition set will remain limited to the 24 volumes offered here. All 24 British first edition volumes, comprising the eight main text volumes and the 16 documents volumes, weigh 84 pounds and command 4 feet 8 inches of shelf space. This full British first edition set of 24 volumes features near fine volumes and dust jackets. The volumes all remain square and tight, with clean, bright contents. We find no ownership marks apart from the author?s Volume VIII signature and the sticker of the venerable London bookseller Henry Sotheran Ltd. on the lower Volume I front pastedown. Of note, laid in at the Volume I endpapers is a 1997 Sales Invoice, indicating that Sotheran sold this set at the time, absent the final War Papers documents volume (not yet published) and the signed Volume VIII for 2,370 British Pounds. We find no spotting in the set. The first 21 volumes were issued with red topstain, which varied in hue over the 22 years spanning publication. Just a few volumes ? notably the Volume V Companions ? show appreciable sunning of the topstain. The dust jackets are complete, with no losses. Of note, all eight main text volumes feature uniform, solid color dust jackets and uniform red cloth bindings with red topstain. (The final three volumes were also issued in a cheaper ?popular edition? with illustrated dust jackets, different color bindings, and no red topstain.) Shelf presentation is excellent. All eight main text volume dust jackets retain bright, unfaded spine color, including the highly fade-prone jackets of Volumes III, IV, V, and VII. Also worthy of note, the red dust jackets of the three War Papers (the final three British first edition document volumes) are also unfaded. The fade prone spine subtitles of the all of the white-jacketed document volumes remain clearly legible. All dust jackets are unclipped, retaining the original flap prices, with the sole exception of main text Volume V. The lower front flap of the first edition dust jacket originally featured two prices, an introductory price ?until February 28th, 1977? with a higher price above. Only the introductory price has been clipped, the higher price remaining intact. Each of the dust jackets is newly fitted with a clear, removable, archival quality protector. Please note that this set will certainly require additional shipping cost; do expect this cost to be reflective of the set?s exceptional size and weight.         Excerpts from the Acid Test

San Francisco: Sound City Productions. [1966]. The first recording by the Grateful Dead, who, up until a month earlier, had been known as The Warlocks. A 7" 33 RPM promotional record, labeled "For Radio Play Only, Not for Sale," with excerpts from the Acid Test album that Sound City was producing. The recording was made at the Sound City studio which was the site of the seventh Acid Test: the Acid Tests were communal events/happenings that Kesey and others had developed that were open to the public and at which LSD -- aka "acid," which was still legal in California at the time -- was distributed to the attendees. The Sound City Acid Test, because it took place in a recording studio, was more of a private event than earlier, or later, Acid Tests. It was also the last one Kesey himself participated in. He had been arrested for marijuana possession for the second time two weeks earlier, and had had to show up in disguise at the sixth Acid Test a week earlier at Longshoremen's Hall in San Francisco, in order to avoid reporters and the police. Within a week of the Sound City Acid Test, with his court case pending, Kesey left the country and went into hiding in Mexico. The Grateful Dead had been the house band for the Acid Tests since they began in 1965, but under their earlier name of The Warlocks. By December 1965 they were starting to use their new name, and at the Acid Tests in January they were being billed as The Grateful Dead. This is the first time they were recorded as the Dead in a recording made for general release. The promo record was issued in March, 1966, and preceded the full length album released later that month. The only earlier recordings of the Grateful Dead are private ones that have made it into circulation as bootlegs or survive in their archives; this, and the Acid Test album from which it was excerpted, were not only intended for public release but were also covered by "a couple of radio stations and a photographer for Look magazine" according to the Sound City press release, although the Look article apparently never appeared. "The purpose of the recording was to produce an album of unusual sounds, mental manipulations of the sometimes considered genius of Mr. Kesey and his cohorts during the actual happenings of a 'sugar' [i.e., LSD] party. The results are different to say the least..." The Acid Test album itself is quite scarce; it was re-released in the 1980s in a limited edition. This promotional giveaway record is exceedingly uncommon, and a landmark for one of the most influential and long-lasting rock and roll bands to come out of the San Francisco Bay Area of the 1960s. The Grateful Dead went on to a 30-year career and became the most popular improvisational "jam band" of its time, triggering any number of similar jamming, touring bands in its wake, and capturing an essence of the hippie counterculture that has lived on long after its historical moment passed. Fine, in a plain white sleeve. A scarce recording from the San Francisco counter-culture, and a seminal recording of one of the great rock bands of all time. First Edition. No Binding.

        The Master and Margarita.

[Moscow:] , [1966 & 1967]. Octavo. Two volumes bound as one in near-contemporary black cloth-backed blue boards, later paper label to front board in manuscript. Board edges worn and scuffed, hinges split but text block tight, contents lightly toned. A very good copy. A samizdat copy, formed of tear sheets from the first appearance in print of The Master and Margarita, which was serialized in two issues of the journal Moskow in November 1966 and January 1967. It is bound in quintessential amateurish fashion, with an anonymous binding due to lack of specialist equipment (the label was a later addition), and was then disseminated by hand through informal networks. This first printing of Bulgakov's best known work is a censored version of the text, eliminating much of the anti-Soviet satire, yet it still caused an immediate sensation on publication. Although the novel was completed in 1938, in common with most of Bulgakov's prose it was not published until long after his death in 1940. The first edition in book form was published by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1967, in a still further censored form of the Russian text. The full text was first published in English later in 1967 (there are two different English translations, one of the censored text and one of the full text). The first appearance of the full text in Russian was published in Frankfurt in 1969. During his life, Bulgakov was best known for the plays he contributed to Konstantin Stanislavsky's and Nemirovich-Danchenko's Moscow Art Theatre. He published a number of novels and stories through the early and mid 1920s, but by 1927 his career began to suffer from criticism that he was too anti-Soviet. By 1929 his career was ruined: government censorship prevented publication of any of his work and staging of any of his plays, and Stalin personally forbade him to emigrate.

        Le Néon de la Vie

Paris: Alexandre Loewy, 1966. Copy #33 of 40 copies, signed by the artist. Entire edition 50 copies: Ten special copies in various states, 40 as this. Large quarto. 10 1/2 x 14 1/4”. Wholly engraved in color. Thirteen loose sheets (26” x 20”) each folded once into eight pages, printed on one side only, for a total of 44 wood engraved pages (title page and first page of text on a single sheet, plus blank end sheet). The work is meant to be viewed in double page spreads. Burlap chemise and open wooden slipcase burnished in square designs around the edges. A highly experimental book with each colorful two-page spread bearing text and designs arranged in a non-linear shape and order. Strachan (p233) writing when Le Néon de la Vie had just been published calls it an example of a livre manuscript. “Louttre has his own very personal language of intentional rusticity. The designs are cut intaglio, inked and printed in black and tones of orange and red, and result in forty pages which are both witty and a feast to the eye." “Loutre B." (sculptor, engraver, ceramicist, mosaic artist) is the son of the designer and painter Roger Bissičre (1886-1964). He used his nickname "Loutre B." (Otter ) as an artist name to emerge from the shadow of his father. He developed a special printing technique , in which he combined woodcut and copperplate engraving, to producing a three-dimensional effect. He began to work in engraving in 1960, studying with Marcel Fiorini and experimenting with combining copper plates with woodblocks for a sculptural effect. The following year Louttre won the second Biennale de Paris. He also experimented with monumental sculpture in cement and wood including those for public buildings; in addition he created tapestries and stained glass windows. He participated in numerous private and collective exhibitions throughout Europe. “Louttre B” also worked in other art forms, from sand painting to stained glass, sculpture, tapestry design and book illustration. His work was included in exhibitions all over the world and is held in several important collections, including the Musée des Beaux-arts in Bordeaux. “Louttre B” worked with experimental techniques in several books entirely engraved, of which Le Néon de la vie, 1966 is the first.; Le Tarot des Familles, 1976 ; Les Douze Émois, 1980 ; Les Trčs Riches Heures, 1985 ; Pauvre Gaspard de Verlaine, 1995 ; Le Bogjo's Bohmp by Walter Léwino, 1995). The Parisian bookseller Alexandre Loewy (1906- 1995) ) published only a few livres des artistes, these by contemporary artists in order to provide a showcase for their experimental work. These include Les Roses by Rainer Maria Rilke, with etchings by Imre Reiner (1959) Vigies by Tristan Tzara with aquatints by Camille Bryen, 1962 Le néon de la vie, text and etchings by M.-A. Bissičre, 1966 Aurélia. By Gerard de Nerval, with etchings by Imred Reiner, 1970 Ref: Strachan, W.J. The Artist and the book in France. 1969. illus plate 117, catalog p.334

        Holograph Notebook

c.1966-1969. Small octavo (194 × 128 mm), pp. 53. English manuscript notebook written in black and blue ink, and pencil, by a single neat and legible hand. Spiral-bound notebook with original buff card covers and ruled pages. Covers marked, front cover partially split at spine, contents mildly toned with a few marks. In very good condition. A manuscript book of notes, reminders and rough sums, with around two-thirds of the notebook filled with lists of books and their prices, with some items ticked off. It includes a lengthy section on Joe Brainard, one of his close friends, following a visit on 2 June 1966: "A white romantic T-short on a bed of flowers, and an unromantic pair of jockey shorts. One thinks of da Vinci paintings dipped in plaster, perfecting the way he painted folds. But Brainard is less abstract, and would be inclined to paint the rags themselves. He paints a lot in opaque watercolour, but a good deal of the time something else gets in: what cataloguers call mixed media", (cf. Pettet, p. 73). Schuyler and Brainard were part of a circle that included Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, Alex Katz, Edwin Denby, Larry Rivers, Fairfield Porter, Jane Freilicher, Virgil Thomson, and John Ashbery.
