Folk Art]: Wooden Scroll Work Patriotic Picture Frame with Photos of American Servicemen

      - Elaborate scrollwork folk art display which houses photographs of seven American serviceman, presumably all members of the same family, who served in the military during World War II or the Vietnam War. While the servicemen are not identified, the dates of their individual service are written in ballpoint ink on the sides of each image (four during WWII and three from the early stages of the Vietnam War, with the last date being 1966). The patriotic motif encompasses several hand cut elements: an American eagle, several American flags, the motto "God Bless America," and an American patriotic shield or crest, amongst which are seven separate spaces, each containing a photograph of an American serviceman in uniform. All of these elements have been affixed to an elaborately scroll-sawed background piece, which in turn has been affixed to burlap in a homemade shadow box-type frame that has been glazed. It is not clear whether this is a memorial piece or just commemorates the service of various family members. A few small breaks on the scrolled wood background, a couple of the photos show some exposure to light, but overall stable and very good or better. A fascinating patriotic artifact encompassing two generations of American military men.

        3 ALS (mailgrams) to Arthur Mizener, 21 Feb 1966, 22 March 1966, 3 August 1966

1966 - Letters concern literary matters, Ford Madox Ford and the English Review; Max Beerbohm’s drawings, Mizener’s biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the latter which RHD expresses a lack of sympathy for, but shows concern for Scottie, FSF’s daughter; Edith Wharton; and comments on Mizener’s reports from Austin, Texas where he gathered notes on UT’s Beerbohm holdings. RHD writes, "Your description of Texas is most vivid–and exactly as I imagined it. I wonder more people don’t go mad and start sniping from towers." The letter is dated Aug. 3, just two days after the campus shooting in which an ex-marine killed 14 and wounded 31. Mizener had been in Austin just prior to the shooting. Old folds inherent to the mailgram, but otherwise fine condition

Man of La Mancha. A Musical Play

NY: Random House. (1966). An extra-annotated copy: inscribed by Wasserman, "To --- ---, a fellow quixotick -- with appreciation, Dale Wasserman, in 1968. Wasserman, who had had success on Broadway with an adaptation of Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1963, wrote the book for Man of La Mancha which opened off Broadway in 1965 and moved to Broadway in 1966, where it won the Tony Award for best musical. Tipped into this copy is a plethora of Quixotic ephemera, as well as four typed letters signed from Wasserman. There is also a photo of a Cervantes-themed bracelet, which the recipient had sent to Wasserman, and which Wasserman mounted and photographed. The four letters span 1968-1969. In one, Wasserman notes: "It amuses me, the way The Impossible Dream has swept the world, gone into so many languages and been put to so many uses. For most often it's used wrongly, in a perversion of its meaning..." The owner has rather compulsively annotated not only the text of the book, and the added articles, reviews, and illustrations; he has also annotated Wasserman's letters. Binding broken from all the ephemera laid in. Thus a good copy, with the dust jacket absent but the jacket flaps preserved and pasted to the endpages. A unique copy. First Edition. Hardcover. Good.

[The Master and Margarita, in] Moskva

Moscow: , 1966-67. 3 parts (1966, pt. 11 and 12; 1967, pt. 1), octavo. Original pale tan cloth with titles blocked to spine and front cover in blue. Housed in a custom blue half morocco solander case with marbled sides. With coloured plates. Slight creasing to spines, "Printed in the Soviet Union" stamp to rear cover of second issue, covers of third issue a little marked with a slight split to head and foot of front spine fold, very light creasing to corners of some pages. Overall an excellent set. The first appearance in print in any format of The Master and Margarita, serialized in two issues of the journal Moskva in November 1966 and January 1967. The intervening December issue, which did not contain any of the novel, is also included in this set. Although the novel had been completed in 1938, in common with most of Bulgakov's prose it was not published until long after his death in 1940. During his life, Bulgakov was best known for the plays he contributed to Konstantin Stanislavsky's and Nemirovich-Danchenko's Moscow Art Theatre. He published a number of novels and stories through the early and mid-1920s, but by 1927 his career began to suffer from criticism that he was too anti-Soviet. By 1929 his career was ruined: government censorship prevented publication of any of his work and staging of any of his plays, and Stalin personally forbade him to emigrate. This first printing of his best known work is a censored version of the text, eliminating much of the anti-Soviet satire, yet it still caused an immediate sensation on publication. The first edition in book form was published by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1967, also with the censored version of the Russian text. The full text was first published in English later in 1967 (there are two different English translations, one of the censored text and one of the full text). The first appearance of the full text in Russian was published in Frankfurt in 1969.
