        Big As Life

New York: Simon & Schuster(1966). 1st edition/1st printing. Signed by the author on a loosely laid-in bookplate. Author's most scarce book (his 2nd), which has not been reprinted by author's request. Fine, straight, clean book--straight, tight and no handwriting in it, bound in red cloth with gilt spine printing and red upper page edges. The dustjacket is price intact, has no chips or tears, and is bright, clean and crisp. It has a tiny area of professional color restoration to the black of the lower edge near the spine, the spine is very slightly age-darkened, and there's just a trace of rubbing to edges and folds. This author's only venture into writing sci-fi. Very handsome! ; Signed by Author, 10, 20, 24, F/NF

Man of La Mancha. A Musical Play

NY: Random House. (1966). An extra-annotated copy: inscribed by Wasserman, "To --- ---, a fellow quixotick -- with appreciation, Dale Wasserman, in 1968. Wasserman, who had had success on Broadway with an adaptation of Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1963, wrote the book for Man of La Mancha which opened off Broadway in 1965 and moved to Broadway in 1966, where it won the Tony Award for best musical. Tipped into this copy is a plethora of Quixotic ephemera, as well as four typed letters signed from Wasserman. There is also a photo of a Cervantes-themed bracelet, which the recipient had sent to Wasserman, and which Wasserman mounted and photographed. The four letters span 1968-1969. In one, Wasserman notes: "It amuses me, the way The Impossible Dream has swept the world, gone into so many languages and been put to so many uses. For most often it's used wrongly, in a perversion of its meaning..." The owner has rather compulsively annotated not only the text of the book, and the added articles, reviews, and illustrations; he has also annotated Wasserman's letters. Binding broken from all the ephemera laid in. Thus a good copy, with the dust jacket absent but the jacket flaps preserved and pasted to the endpages. A unique copy. First Edition. Hardcover. Good.

[The Master and Margarita, in] Moskva

Moscow: , 1966-67. 3 parts (1966, pt. 11 and 12; 1967, pt. 1), octavo. Original pale tan cloth with titles blocked to spine and front cover in blue. Housed in a custom blue half morocco solander case with marbled sides. With coloured plates. Slight creasing to spines, "Printed in the Soviet Union" stamp to rear cover of second issue, covers of third issue a little marked with a slight split to head and foot of front spine fold, very light creasing to corners of some pages. Overall an excellent set. The first appearance in print in any format of The Master and Margarita, serialized in two issues of the journal Moskva in November 1966 and January 1967. The intervening December issue, which did not contain any of the novel, is also included in this set. Although the novel had been completed in 1938, in common with most of Bulgakov's prose it was not published until long after his death in 1940. During his life, Bulgakov was best known for the plays he contributed to Konstantin Stanislavsky's and Nemirovich-Danchenko's Moscow Art Theatre. He published a number of novels and stories through the early and mid-1920s, but by 1927 his career began to suffer from criticism that he was too anti-Soviet. By 1929 his career was ruined: government censorship prevented publication of any of his work and staging of any of his plays, and Stalin personally forbade him to emigrate. This first printing of his best known work is a censored version of the text, eliminating much of the anti-Soviet satire, yet it still caused an immediate sensation on publication. The first edition in book form was published by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1967, also with the censored version of the Russian text. The full text was first published in English later in 1967 (there are two different English translations, one of the censored text and one of the full text). The first appearance of the full text in Russian was published in Frankfurt in 1969.

      - Routil, K. Saller, Verzeichnis der Gusinde-Arbeiten (1966), pp. 5-7. A massive scholarly report on the indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego, by the Catholic priest, ethnologist and anthropologist Martin Gusinde (1886-1969), who spent a total of 22 months as a participant observer among them during four visits in the years 1918 to 1924. He took part in the initiation rites of the Selk'nam (Onawo) and was inducted as a member. He also provides important information about the flora and fauna, though primarily in the context of their use by the indigenous peoples. Most of the illustrations show photographs. Gusinde also made audio recordings of the indigenous music and renders numerous examples here in Western musical notation. The series title-pages all read Die Feuerland Indianer, but the facing volume title-pages name the various indigenous groups: Die Selk'nam vom Leben und Denken eines Jägervolkes auf der grossen Feuerlandinsel; Die Yamana vom Leben und Denken der Wassernomaden am Kap Hoorn; Die Halakwulup vom Leben und Denken der Wassernomaden in West-Patagonien; and Anthropologie der Feuerland-Indianer. It remains the definitive study of these peoples, often based on direct observation of activities that have since fallen victim to encroaching Western culture, and all subsequent studies take Gusinde's work as their starting point. "Das Werk enthält völkerkundlich höchst wertvolle Abbildungen!" (Saller). With library (deaccession) stamps. With a tear repaired along the fold of 1 chomolithographed map (but the map is repeated in the other two volumes) and an occasional very minor blemish, but otherwise in fine condition. The definitive study of the indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego, with more than 600 illustrations, preserving a gold mine of cultural information that would otherwise have been lost forever.

The recipients, Barbara and Etele, worked with the author at the BBC Monitoring Service at Caversham Park after the Second World War. Bond noted that "at that time Caversham Park was staffed almost entirely by refugees: Russian and Polish people and different nationalities … My Paddington Bear books also had a character who was a Hungarian refugee – Mr Gruber" (BBC interview, 13 February 2012). The character of Mr Gruber, a Notting Hill antique dealer, was Paddington's great friend in the series. Bond stayed closely in touch with Etele and Barbara for many years after he left Caversham.

A period press release notes AC "enjoyed success in the inertial guidance field since entering the technological field pioneered by the work of Dr. C. Stark Draper of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Instrumentation Laboratory." Two other major contractors were announced at the same time: Kollsman Instrument Corporation (optical subsystems, including a space sextant, sunfinders, and navigation display equipment) and Raytheon Corporation (the onboard digital computer). MIT would retain overall direction of the project, in essence coordinating the different companies.By Feb of 1964, the management structure was changed. "AC Spark Plug would become the principal contractor, with the Raytheon Company and Kollsman Instrument Corporation as subcontractors. MIT would still have primary responsibility for system design and analysis."On October 14, 1964, the first Apollo "guidance system completed acceptance testing and was shipped at 11:30 p.m. and arrived at Downey, California, early the following day. AC reported that in more than 2,000 hours of operation they had found the system to be "remarkably reliable, accurate and simple to operate." (the above timeline derived from the GM Heritage Center)The document offered here, dated June 1965, is part of the next phase (which extended through 1969) which was expected to cover manufacturing and testing of the real Apollo guidance systems. The document (from Kollsman Instrument Corporation to AC Electronics*) is a detailed 3 month progress report. On display is the amount of intense cross-company planning and coordination necessary for major contractors to work together. Delivery schedules (everything from test fixtures to Optics Cleaner Kits, LEM trainer simulators, MSC Lunar Trainer, LEM GSE cleaner kits). An Apollo Optical Subsystem program summary with work delivery schedules (both high level and subsystems), major engineering investigations, etc. A major section covers Design Evaluation with similar detail. Then Production Status, starting with an airborne critical shortage list. Everything necessary for AC Electronics to measure the progress of one of it's major subcontractors. *[AC Spark Plug became AC Electronics earlier in 1965]A tour de force of major manufacturing/design planning, ripe with internal planning and progress information not often found "in the wild" for projects of this importance. Ever want to study how space program work actually proceeded? How many moving parts there were? Perhaps the coolest aspect - only a few items delivered by this time have serial numbers over 8. Cradle period innovation on display. No one had ever done this before. Highly recommended for anyone interested in major project planning in the space program.Genuinely rare. We find no copies of this (or any other Kollsman / AC Electronics presentation) in OCLC as of this writing, nor have we handled such in 20 years in the business. [Attributes: First Edition]

Clean, bright pages. A superb copy, easily the best we've ever seen.Professor Carroll Quigley's magnum opus, a world history of power with a focus on the Anglo-American elite. In many ways Quigley was a complex bundle of contradictions: a conservative defender of Western civiliation who opposed the Vietnam War and was Bill Clinton's mentor at Georgetown. During the early cold war he was a true Washington insider who worked as a consultant for the Defense Department, the Navy, and other government entities, but his work is most often referenced by perennial outsiders like the John Birch Society and conspiracy researchers like the late Jim Marrs.
