San Francisco: Cranium Press, 1966. Second Edition. One of 700 copies. Slim octavo (21.5cm); letterpress printed sheets, hand-sewn into red-orange wrappers illustrated by Kenn Davis; [16]pp; illus. Inscribed by the author on the copyright page in the month of publication: "This copy is for Shig. Richard Brautigan / December 16, 1966." Fine. Brautigan's first regularly published book, inscribed to Shigeyoshi "Shig" Murao, who managed the City Lights Bookstore for more than 25 years. Murao was at the very center of the San Francisco Beat scene, who knew Brautigan since he was an awkward 20-something newcomer to the Bay Area. As the years passed and Brautigan's output began to grow, he would frequently visit Murao at City Lights, checking to see if any of his poetry pamphlets had sold. Though Brautigan was grew more contentious as his fame grew, their's was a friendship that lasted decades. A distinguished copy. Barber A7.

        Intelligent Life in the Universe

San Francisco, London, Amsterdam: Holden-Day, Inc.,, 1966. Being a translation, extension, and revision of I. S. Shklovskii's [Russian title]. Authorized translation by Paula Fern. Square octavo. Original cloth. With the dust jacket. Illustrations in the text throughout. An excellent copy with small chips to the ends and corners. First edition, first printing, of Carl Sagan's first book, concerning the topic that consumed him throughout his life. This wonderful association copy comes from the library, with ownership stamp to the front free endpaper, of Dr Homer E. Newell Jr. (1915-1983). Newell was a mathematics professor and author who became a powerful US government science administrator, rising eventually to the third in command of NASA. In the early 1960s he controlled or influenced virtually all non-military unmanned space missions for the free world. He played a significant role in the negotiations which led to the creation of NASA, chairing a committee of rocket and satellite experimenters that drafted a consensus plan for a national space establishment which was presented to Eisenhower's science advisor, and advising the Senate preparedness investigating subcommittee... When the legislation establishing NASA was passed in 1958, Newell was given credit by his peers, including Van Allen, who called him "The Spark Plug" for a strong space science element in NASA. Newell joined NASA in 1958 (the year this book was published), and was successively assistant director for space sciences (1958-1960), deputy director of space flight programs (1960-1961), director of space sciences (1961-1963), associate administrator for space science and applications (1963-1967) and finally associate administrator of NASA, the third ranking position, from 1967 until 1974 (and as such overseeing the Moon Landing.) (1967-1974). In 1965, Newell was awarded the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service. He was also commemorated in the Goddard Space Flight Center's Homer E. Newell memorial library, and asteroid 2086 Newell.

The Romanovs: Three Centuries Of An Ill-Fated Dynasty

London - The Bodley Head, 1966 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition.. A first edition of this history of the Romanovs, by the child of aRussian aristocratic emigree Martha Edith Almedingen, from the collection of Count Sangorski. The edition includes a frontispieceof arare photograph of Vassily Island, showing the winter palace, as well as the tercentenary stamps issued in 1913 to celebrate the Romanov dynasty. On her mother's side, Almedingen was descended from the aristocratic Poltoratsky family; her maternal grandfather was Serge Poltoratzky, the literary scholar and bibliophile who ended his days in exile, shuttling between France and England. His second wife Ellen Sarah Southee, 16 years his junior, and the daughter of an English gentleman farmer, grew up in Kent. She was related to poet Robert Southey. Their children had English governesses and grew up speaking English. His daughter Olga, the novelist's mother, grew up in Kent but was fascinated by her father's native Russia. Through this family connection the author possessed a unique connection to an interest in her subject matter. Count R. L Sangorski was a prominent art collector famous for contributing to the John Marriot collection of Chinese Art. These works are listed on a receipt for binding issued to him in the 1980s, found with the sale of his collection. Bound in the 1980's after Asprey's acquisition of Zaehnsdorf bindery (1983), who merged it with their previous acquisition of Sangorski and Sutcliff. This binding is likely to be a Zaehnsdorf binding, under the name of Asprey. Condition: In a full morocco Asprey binding. Externally excellent, with almost no perceptible wear. Internally, clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: FINE.

An original production cel from the MGM animation Dr Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas:

MGM,, 1966. Why Santa, Why? Original hand painted production cel: the image of the Grinch measuring 155 x 185 mm. Mounted, glazed and framed in black wood (overall size 390 x 440 mm). In excellent condition. Originally broadcast by CBS on 18 December 1966, How the Grinch Stole Christmas became a perennial feature of US festive season television - the position occupied by Raymond Briggs's The Snowman for British audiences. Superbly voiced by Boris Karloff and with ear-catching music by Albert Hague and Eugene Poddany, it was Chuck Jones's inspired direction that turned Seuss's updating of the Scrooge story into a small screen classic. In this scene the Grinch tries to explain to Cindy Lou Who what exactly he is doing in her home on Christmas Eve and features at around the 16:29 mark in the film. The cel captures a trademark Chuck Jones expression of smarmy cunning on the face of the despicable Grinch.

Howard Hawks (Softcover, inscribed by Hawks)

Editions Universitaires / Classiques du Cinema no. 21, Paris 1966 - Later printing, trade softcover. INSCRIBED by legendary director Howard Hawks on the half title page: "To Pierre Goulliard / Howard Hawks." The genre-hopping director of such classics as "His Girl Friday" (1940), "The Big Sleep" (1946), "The Thing from Another World" (1951), and "Rio Bravo" (1959), Hawks' critical reputation as auteur was established by "Cahiers du Cinema" in the 1950s and his work was a huge influence on the emerging French New Wave, particularly Truffaut, Rivette, and Jean-Luc Godard. Godard called Hawks "the greatest American artist." An uncommon signature on a volume of an important series of film criticism written at the time the director's reputation as an auteur was still very much being established. From the collection of noted cinephile and collector Pierre Goulliard, who spent decades in the latter half of the twentieth century obtaining inscriptions from the giants of European cinema.Near Fine in photo illustrated wrappers. Light rubbing to the edges, and some light soil to the wrappers. Text in French, illustrated with numerous photos throughout. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
