        Death of a Naturalist [Signed]

New York Oxford University Press 1966 First Printing of the poet's critically acclaimed first commercially published work (preceded by the privately printed pamphlet, Eleven Poems, in 1965), one of only 1,000 copies (bound from sheets purchased from Faber and Faber, Heaney's London publisher). Tall, slim 8vo: 57,[1]pp. Publisher's aquamarine cloth, spine lettered in gilt; typographic dust jacket printed in salmon-pink and olive, lettered black, priced $3.75. Signed by Heaney on the title page. A stunning copy, tight, square and likely unread; about Fine jacket, fresh and bright, with usual fading to the fugitive salmon-pink on bottom half of spine panel but all lettering undiminished. Winner of the Somerset Maugham Award, the Cholmondeley Award, the Eric Gregory Award, and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. Heaney received the Nobel Prize in literature, in 1995. Brandes & Durkan A2b. Fine ¶ A collection of 34 poems largely concerned with rural life, often in the context of childhood experiences and the formulation of adult identities and intimate relationships. It includes "Digging," "Death of a Naturalist," "Blackberry-Picking," among others. "Seamus Heaney has been, for good or ill, internationally the most prominent and the most popular Irish poet of the latter part of the twentieth century and the first part of the twenty-first. . . . His first two collections, Death of a Naturalist and Door into the Dark [a signed copy of which we also have on offer], largely written before the renewed outbreak of the so-called 'Troubles' in 1968, show Heaney alerting his audience to the violent history of colonisation on his native ground, but preoccupied also by the rhythms of life in a rural setting remembered from his childhood. He also, in a Wordsworthian manner, focuses upon the sources and resources of his own poetic voice and power." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         3 ms. Briefe mit eigenh. U. Locarno-Monti, 1966-1968.

1966. Zusammen 3 SS. 4to. An Gerhard Bormann, Oberstaatsanwalt i. Octopussy and the Living Daylights.

London: Jonathan Cape. 1966. An UNCORRECTED PROOF copy of the first edition. In printed green wrappers and the pictorial dust-jacket which differs considerably to the published version. The text features some significant differences within the preliminaries leaves, plus literals and minor variations throughout. A very good copy of the book with some toning to edges and extremities, in a fine copy of the jacket (toned at spine). I would suggest the book was read/reviewed away from the oversized wrapper, which shows little signs of wear. An attractive copy. One of 350 copies only- this is a much smaller print run than the previous five James Bond titles in proof-form. Gilbert A14a.

With 12 abstract (rather than pictorial) zodiac signs. Contemporary French sprinkled calf, gold-tooled spine and board edges. The boards are 5 mm thick, but each has a large panel hollowed out on the inside, perhaps to hold astronomical aids of some sort.

      - Armitage, Edmond Halley, (1966), pp. 31-32; Cook, Edmond Halley: charting the heavens and the seas (1997), p. 78; DSB VI, pp. 67-72. Rare first French edition of the first major work by Edmond Halley (1656-1742) translated from the Latin by the astronomer Augustin Royer. A precocious child, Halley became assistant to John Flamsteed at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1675. In 1676 he travelled to the remote South Atlantic island Saint Helena in order to set up an observatory where he set up a more than 7-metre telescope and a sextant with a radius of more than 1 1/2 metres (with telescopic sights) on the top of a 680 metre hill there and map the stars of the southern hemisphere, still not well known in Europe. He also observed a transit of Mercury. On his return to England in 1678, at the age of 22, he published his important observations in the first (Latin) edition of the present work, Catalogus stellarum Australium, sive supplementum catalogi Tychonici, London, 1678. It was a pioneering work not only because it covered the southern hemisphere, but because it was the first printed star catalogue to give telescopically determined positions. According to Cook, the present French translation was published as a supplement to Royer's Carte du ciel, also published in 1679, which covered only stars observable from Europe. Also in 1678 Halley drew up a planisphere, and the Royal Society, impressed by both, elected him as a fellow. Halley, astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, meteorologist and physicist, was one of the most innovative thinkers of his day, bringing theory and practice together. He is best known as an early adherent of Newton's idea that comets following the same laws as planets, and he correctly concluded that at least some followed elliptical orbits, while Newton had favoured parabolic paths. By computing their orbits from contemporary and historical accounts he successfully predicted the 1758 return of the one now known as Halley's comet.Although Cook calls for an accompanying planisphere, it and a plate with four figures rarely appear as part of the book, whether in the Latin or the French edition, and the book itself does not call for either. They appear to have been separate publications, sometimes found accompanying the book. The hollowed boards of the present binding may have been intended to hold them as loosely inserted folded additions (there is no sign that anything was ever attached). The Earl of Maccelsfield's copy, with his 1860 armorial bookplate, and his embossed stamp on the title-page and 2 following leaves. The second Earl of the second creation, George Parker (ca. 1697-1764) was a leading astronomer and president of the Royal Society. In good condition. With a chip at the top of spine and the hinges worn. First French edition of Edmond Halley's first major work.

Program for the Second Piatigorsky Cup: International Grandmaster Chess Tournament July 17 to August 15, 1966

Santa Monica: Piatigorsky Cup Committee, 1966. 16 unpaginated pages with facsimiles, photographs. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's spiral spine with red wrappers and cup in silver and black to cover. Signed by all participants next to their photograph in the program along with a short biography of each contestant. (Not listed in Betts) First edition. After the success of the First Piatigorsky Cup (1963), the second was organized by Gregor and Jacqueline Piatigorsky in Santa Monica, California at the Miramar Hotel from July 17-August 15, 1966, with Isaac Kashdan directing. The stellar field included the current and next two World Champions plus a slew of Candidates-level grandmasters in a double-round robin event: Jan Hein Donner, Robert James Fischer, Borislav Ivkov, Bent Larsen, Miguel Najdorf, Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Boris Spassky, Wolfgang Unzicker. The Piatigorskys invited both Reshevsky and Fischer in spite of the Fischer - Reshevsky (1961) match fiasco. The 1966 Piatigorsky Cup tournament ranks as on of the strongest chess competitions ever held on American soil. It is on a short list that includes New York 1924, New York 1927, and the Sinquefield Cups. Held during the Cold War, when tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union were high, the Piatigorsky Cup represented a triumph of diplomacy. The tournament was a double-robin competition in which all participants played each other twice. The Piatigorskys produced an elegant trophy for the event that featured a "love cup" designed by Tiffany & Company as it centerpiece. With Bobby Fischer participating in the event, ensured that the top American talent of the period was represented in the competition. It also meant that the field of ten players contained one World Champion (Petrosian) as well as two future ones (Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky). After a strong start followed by a disastrous performance mid-tournament Fischer mounted an amazing comeback to tie with the tournament leader Spassky, in the standings. Their game in the penultimate round attracted a record 900 spectators and served as a preview of the excitement the two would generate six years later in their epic 1972 World Chess Championship match in Reykjavik, Iceland. The two played a hard fought draw. Spassky then won his lat game against Jan Hein Donner, who was at the bottom of the standings, while Fisher's game against Petrosian ended in a draw. Spassky achieved a narrow victory over Fischer, winning $5000.Condition:Some of the combs in the spiral binder chipped off else a near fine copy.

Last Bus to Banjo Creek (Original screenplay for an unproduced film)

N.p.: N.p., 1966. Draft script for an unproduced film. Copy belonging to crew member James H. Ware. Ware was a major presence in British and American cinema, best known for his work on "Beat the Devil" (1953), "Room at the Top" (1959), "Our Man in Havana" (1959), "Charade" (1963), and "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" (1965). Wilson. A prim and proper English lady and an Aussie find themselves traveling together through the Outback, where a romance soon develops, like "African Queen" but lacking a war. Set in Australia.         Big as Life

Simon and Schuster 1966 - A very scarce SIGNED first edition AND first printing of E.L. Doctorow's 'Big as Life', published by Simon and Schuster (US) in 1966. Condition: very good overall with slight foxing to the page edges, and slight shelf wear. The dust jacket is protected in archival mylar. The wrapper is in very good shape. Provenance of the signature: The book is flat signed to the front free endpaper (ffep). The book stems from the well-known collection of Dr Philip Murray who, during his active years, gathered a collection of over 2,000 first editions. Murray authored a book titled 'The Adventures of a Book Collector' where he gives testimony how he obtained many of the rare signatures. Mostly, as in this case, he sent the books to the authors, and then received the books back duly signed. You will receive one of the letters together with the book. The late E.L. Doctorow (1931-2015) was one of the most important American writers of the 20th century. He won the National Book Critics Circle Award thrice for 'Ragtime' and 'Billy Bathgate', and 'The March'; the PEN/ Faulkner Award for 'Billy Bathgate' and 'The March'; the American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal in 2013, and numerous other awards and honours.       First Edition thus London Faber & Faber 1966 First Printing under the author's name. Small 8vo; [4], 258pp. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt (still brilliant); illustrated dust jacket priced at 25s. A Very Fine copy, square, tight and unmarked, in a Fine jacket. Often identified as the second edition, this is, in fact, the third, the second being a reissue by Heinemann under its Contemporary Fiction imprint, still bearing the pseudonym 'Victoria Lucas,' in 1964. Fine ¶ Plath's only novel, this roman à clef was published just one month before her suicide under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. It "provides a savvy critique of gender and class relations in Cold War America, a psychological journey through illness and recuperation, a complex exploration of female identity . . . Although Plath dismissed the book as a 'potboiler' when describing it to her mother, probably because she knew it would hurt her mother's feelings, she felt excited while writing it, and it remains an impressive achievement today."         Fancy on a Bach Air for solo cello. Autograph musical manuscript signed. Undated, but 1966. The complete work....

1 page. Oblong folio, 280 x 420 mm. Notated in pencil on light green 16-stave printed Aztec XX-16 music paper, with music encompassing both bass and soprano clefs, mostly unbarred. Signed at upper right, with autograph titling, "Fancy on a Bach Aria," at head, and tempo ("Largo") and metronome marking (". = ca. 48-56") at upper left. With ("ca 5:30") at conclusion, indicating that the piece is approximately 5 minutes and 30 seconds in length. Commissioned by Judy and Robert Goldberg and first performed by Yo-Yo Ma at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston on August 24, 1997. "The American John Corigliano continues to add to one of the richest, most unusual, and most widely celebrated bodies of work any composer has created over the last forty years. Corigliano's scores, now numbering over one hundred, have won him the Pulitzer Prize, the Grawemeyer Award, four Grammy Awards, and an Academy Award ("Oscar") and have been performed and recorded by many of the most prominent orchestras, soloists, and chamber musicians in the world. "My 'Goldberg Variation,' Fancy on a Bach Air, is for unaccompanied cello. It transforms the gentle arches of Bach's theme into slowly soaring arpeggi of almost unending phrase-lengths. Its dual inspiration was the love of two extraordinary people and the solo cello suites of a great composer - both of them strong, long-lined, passionate, eternal, and for me, definitive of all that is beautiful in life."

'You Only Live Twice' (released through United Artists). Six original photographs for 'Cinema 66' magazine.

n.d. [25th August 1966]. Six original black and white photographs of Sean Connery as James Bond, taken on location in Japan during the filming of Ian Fleming's You Only Live Twice. Three photos capture a relaxed Connery in full Japanese costume, in between takes. The other three photos were taken on the actor's 36th birthday, which took place on set; one shows Connery in the daytime wearing a simple fisherman's costume whilst cutting a cake, and the remaing two show him at an evening party, with 'Happy Birthday' banners, dancing in a Kimono. Director Lewis Gilbert appears in two of the images, as does the Assistant Director Bill Cartlidge. Many thanks to John Gilbert, son of Lewis Gilbert, for assisting this cataloguer (Jon Gilbert) in person on 12th June 2012. Approx. dimensions 30 x 24cm. Fine condition. These are FILE images, taken for a French film magazine 'Cinema 66', and bear the Italian photographer's credit 'Copyright Pierluigi' to the verso. Each print also bears the distributor's stamp 'APIS - PARIS' and has an extensive text on the rear, typed in French. These were obtained when the archives of the publication were dispersed; it is most likely these are the only such prints, the negatives for which are likely no longer in existence. Quite possibly a unique set of images, from the vintage, Golden-era of the cinematic James Bond. Sold without copyright.

London William Heinemann [through 1971] 1966 A scarce, complete set in collectible condition of Scott's celebrated quartet, set during the concluding years of the British Raj, in four octavo volumes. About Fine (dust-soiled top edge, spine toe creased, else tight, bright, clean and strong) and apparently unread in about Near Fine jacket (spine panel lightly faded, with tips briefly worn). Spoils: Publisher's chestnut-brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket priced £4.90. Fine (save for previous owner's inscription in a neat hand on front fly leaf), in Fine jacket. Scott's "painstakingly researched Quartet which examines the lives of ordinary Anglo-Indians against the background of the end of Empire [the five years from the Quit India campaign of the Congress Committee to Indian independence, in 1947]. These novels constitute Scott's principal claim to be regarded as a major post-war writer [The Times, in fact, called Scott's quartet "one of the most important landmarks of post-war fiction."] . . . . The Quartet is still perhaps underestimated as an analysis of the pre-Independence roots of the racism Salman Rushdie identified in the 1980s under the label 'the New Empire within Britain.' Scott sacrificed his life to the writing of the Quartet, becoming something of a monomaniacal recluse with tendencies toward alcoholism and occasional domestic violence. His death from cancer, in 1978, in London came at the time his work was just beginning to be appreciated." (The Literary Encyclopedia) TN. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
