Helen Levitt
Viking, 1965, Hardcover (Original Cloth), Book Condition: Near Fine Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine, First Edition. LEVITT, HELEN, and AGEE, JAMES. A Way of Seeing, New York: Viking Press, 1965. Oblong octavo, first edition, pp. 78, full black cloth boards with white lettering on spine and upper board, gravures, text by Agee. Parr & Badger, V.1, pp. 252-53: "Levitt's street pictures of New York children in underprivileged areas ... exemplify the shift from New Deal social documentation to a more personal and elliptical way of looking at life. ... Levitt's photographs are beautiful -- major, underrated works." Roth, 101 Books, pp. 178-79: Agee's "photo-by-photo interpretations can be crushingly heavy-handed. Happily, Levitt's work easily escapes the text's abrasive grip, its buoyancy and grit intact." Also see Hasselblad, Open Book, pp. 214-15. Condition of this book: Near fine with jacket faintly worn at edges with tiny spots of foxing at rear flap; boards a bit sunned at edges. Leaves clean and tight, with toning at white edges, images fine. Preliminary leaf with publisher's note has half-inch-wide vertical blemish, apparently skid marks from a press roller or binding machinery. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. DICK, Philip K.
Los Angeles, CA, and elsewhere: , c.1965-91. Together 15 items, 6 typed letters signed from PKD to Anne, 3 letters from Anne to PKD, and 6 other related items (see below). Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Philip K. Dick was married to his third wife Anne Williams Rubinstein from 1 April 1959 to October 1965. Long after their divorce, in mid-1973, Anne burned most of their earlier correspondence, but they renewed contact in December 1973. The ultimate fruit of this was her biography, Search for Philip K. Dick, 1928-1982; A Memoir and Biography of the Science Fiction Writer (Lewiston, NY: The Edwin Mellen Press, 1995). The correspondence includes a copy of the famous "Tagore" letter written by Philip K. Dick in 1981, a 2-page photocopied letter from PKD to Edmund Meskys, editor of the fanzine Niekas, which was mailed to perhaps 85 or so correspondents, following a revelation that PKD had in September 1981. The typed letters signed from PKD to Anne are: 1) Los Angeles, 26 Dec. 1973, 2 pages, signed "Phil"; a highly important letter discussing in depth the difficulty of life in Los Angeles, the television and film business, the novel he has been working on for years and is shortly to be published (Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, 1974), his poor health ("I saw Mr Death standing in the corner of the bedroom; he wore a modern polyester suit and carried an attaché case…"); partially published in Anne R. Dick, The Search for Philip K. Dick (2010), pp. 171-2; 2) Fullerton, 17 Mar. 1974, 1 page, signed "Phil"; on the illness of their old fr … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

HERLIHY, James Leo
New York: Simon & Schuster. (1965). First. First edition. Light bump on the bottom of the front board else about fine in fine dustwrapper. Nicely Inscribed by the author to the critic for the New York Post Leonard Lyons using the whole front fly: "Dear Leonard Lyons, Thanks so very much for all your attention to me and my work in the past. You have all of my best wishes and regards. Sincerely, Jim Herlihy, New York. July 21, 1965." Waldo Salt wrote the screenplay for the John Schlesinger-directed film featuring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, the movie became the only X-rated film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture (it has since been re-graded to an R rating, and will perhaps, in some hyper-desensitized future, ultimately be approved for General Audiences as a family triple feature with The Exorcist and Taxi Driver). A sharp copy with a significant association. .

G G Rushby
W. H. Allen, London, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Good. 'This fascinating chronicle of elephant hunting is by a man with adventure in his blood. He has been professional ivory hunter, coffee planter, and gold miner. He has encountered man-eating tigers and lions the latter once ate over a thousand people in thirteen years. He was Deputy Game Warden of Tanganyika, and took Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands on a hunting safari. He controlled what he considers to be the two best Game Reserves in the territory — Rungwa Reserve (where he found cave drawings), and Lake Rungwa Controlled Area with its marvellous bird life. It is one of the breeding grounds for flamingos and pelicans, with an abundance of hippo. Mr. Rushby is closely concerned with the technicalities (and sometimes the mystique) of elephant hunting. He knows a great deal about elephant behaviour, the training of hunters, the types of weapon to choose, and the dramatic superstitions surrounding the profession. He tells of the great hunters of the pastsome of whom pre-dated the earliest explorations in the territory, and at least two of whom are reputed to have reached Victoria Falls before Livingston. He is no sentimentalist. He gives the facts, knowledgeably and entertainingly, and his story makes a real contribution to the work of the Game Reserves.' Book - in Very Good brown boards with gilt lettering - some bumping to the extreme top corner of the front board & extreme ends of the spine.
