        Huncke's Journal

New York, NY: The Poets Press, 1965. First edition. Stapled Wrappers. Very Fine. Matson, Erin. The first edition of the first published work of Herbert Huncke, who introduced William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg & Jack Kerouac to the NYC underworld & helped launch the Beat Generation. Published by Beat poet Diane Di Prima's press, this is among the very rarest Huncke collectibles. This is a particularly beautiful copy, in very fine condition with only creases & chips at spine edge, & staples beginning to rust. Signed by Herbert Huncke on the title page, in a clear, smooth script that indicates it is early, probably at or near the time of publication, since his later signatures are rather shaky & unsteady.         Selected Poems ]Signed]

New York: New Directions, 1965. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. A Quite Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (slight rubs to the spine ends and corner tips, toning to the half-title and white endpapers caused by the dust jacket and outer endpapers and pastedowns made of material matching the dust jacket material), in a Very Good dust jacket with some small tears with loss to the rear flap fold), SIGNED BY EUGENIO MONTALE on the half-title -- published ten years prior to his winning the Nobel Prize and presenting a selection of Montale's Poems originally published in Italian, here published facing their respective Italian originals, including translations by such notables as Robert Lowell, Maurice English, Cid Corman, James Merrill, Charles Wright, and Irma Brandeis. Described by the Nobel Committee as "one of the few obvious 'true masters' of the last fifty years of Italian literature", Eugenio Montale won the 1975 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his distinctive poetry which, with great artistic sensitivity, has interpreted human values under the sign of an outlook on life with no illusions". While signed limited editions of his work have been produced in English and are readily obtainable, signed copies of his trade editions in English translation are quite uncommon. An altogether Very Good + or better copy, SIGNED BY EUGENIO MONTALE.

The Woman from Sarajevo [Signed] [Gospodjica]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1965. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first American edition, first printing (binding askew, spine and adjacent portion of the front board lightly sunned, light rubbing to the spine ends and board corners), in a Very Good dust jacket (mild rubbing and chipping the the spine ends and flap fold corners, sunning to the spine panel and to the adjacent portion of the front panel), SIGNED BY IVO ANDRIC on the half-title, and originally published in 1945 as "Gospodjica" as one of the three novels in Andric's famed Bosnian Trilogy ["Na Drini cuprija" ("The Bridge on the Drina"), "Travnicka hronika" ("Bosnian Story") and "Gospodjica" ("The Woman from Sarajevo")]. One of Yugoslavia's greatest, and one of its most influential, writers, Andric was awarded the 1961 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the epic force with which he has traced themes and depicted human destinies drawn from the history of his country", with The Bridge on the Drina playing a large measure in his winning the Prize. In presenting the Prize to Andric, Anders Österling, then the Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, recalled Andric's service as Yugoslavia's Ambassador to Berlin during World War II and his survival of German bombing and his having to flee his country upon Germany's invasion of it. Österling goes went on to state: "Forced to retreat during the German occupation, Andric nevertheless managed to survive and to write three remarkable novels. These are generally called the Bosnian trilogy, although they have nothing in common but their historical setting, which is symbolized by the crescent and the cross. The creation of this work, in the deafening roar of guns and in the shadow of a national catastrophe whose scope then seemed beyond calculation, is a singularly striking literary achievement. The publication of the trilogy did not take place until 1945." After discussing "Na Drini cuprija" and "Travnicka hronika", Österling stated: "The third volume, Gospodjica (The Woman from Sarajevo), 1945, is different; it is a purely psychological study of avarice in its pathological and demoniac aspect. It tells the story of a merchant's daughter who lives alone in Sarajevo. Her bankrupt father had told her on his death-bed to defend her interests ruthlessly, since wealth is the only means of escape from the cruelties of existence..... [T]he portrait is strikingly successful....". Signed copies of Andric's works, particularly in English translation, are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY IVO ANDRIC. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.
