Auotgraph Letter Signed to author and director, Garson Kanin Postmarked May 7, 1965, 5 separate pages with holograph envelope postmarked Manchester, May 7, 1965

Leigh and Kanin were good friends, and she had hoped to act in one of his plays as this letter indicates. "My Dearest Garson, You know without my telling you how dearly I would love to work with you & I was just praying that this play would be the one - But dear friend please forgive me when I say I wish I could not find myself insufficiently interested in the characters. Cynthia herself seems so totally without heart - without enough wit or fun by way of compensation - oh dear - I am so miserable at having to write this I believe which is useless to be anything but honest about it isn't it? As you well know after the kind of wretchedness we have just been through with this play - this judgement is not always the clearest & I just hope I am wrong & that you will find someone & have a glorious success with it - I am endlessly grateful anyway darling that you should have thought of me. We finish here next week - I shall be back in London 16th - Please please write, Garson ,& tell me you forgive me for what has been a heartbreaking decision to make- All my dearest deepest love from both - Vivien ." Leigh likely refers to the play, "La Contessa," previewed to poor reception in Newcastle and Liverpool in April and Manchester in May 1965, when she wrote this letter. Also In 1965, her final film, "Ship of Fools" was released, and two years later, she died of tuberculosis which had plagued her much of her adult life. Vivien Leigh is considered one of the greatest actresses of stage and screen.

[Manuscript]: "[The Battle of] Peyton Place" [published in] TV Guide and "Mia Farrow" [published in] The Saturday Evening Post

1965. Two typed manuscripts about Mia Farrow and her breakout TV series, Peyton Place, along with several internal memos, and a Typed Letter Signed from the author. The first manuscript is titled "Peyton Place" but was published by the January 16, 1965 issue TV Guide as "The Battle of Peyton Place." It consists of 19 single typed sheets typed rectos only with a few scattered holograph corrections and a penciled notation, presumably by an editor, stating "Raw Copy Unedited." The second manuscript, titled "Mia Farrow," consists of twelve typed sheets typed rectos only with holograph corrections and a penciled note, stating "Raw unedited copy, 8/26/65," accompanied by two copies of the manuscript stapled at the corners. All fine. Our research could not determine if the second manuscript was ever published in its entirety but sections of it were certainly used in the TV Guide article. Included is a Typed Letter Signed from the author to a Saturday Evening Post editor noting revisions made to the Farrow story, and most interesting, five pages of internal Saturday Evening Post memos commenting on the story, all fine. The memos provide a window into story development and the opinions of the editors on reader interest, the author, Farrow's "vapid personality," and her future husband, Frank Sinatra, who is referred to as "the old gash master." .

        Midnight Cowboy

New York: Simon & Schuster (1965). First edition. Light bump on the bottom of the front board else about fine in fine dustwrapper. Nicely Inscribed by the author to the critic for the New York Post Leonard Lyons using the whole front fly: "Dear Leonard Lyons, Thanks so very much for all your attention to me and my work in the past. You have all of my best wishes and regards. Sincerely, Jim Herlihy, New York. July 21, 1965." Waldo Salt wrote the screenplay for the John Schlesinger-directed film featuring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, the movie became the only X-rated film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture (it has since been re-graded to an R rating, and will perhaps, in some hyper-desensitized future, ultimately be approved for General Audiences as a family triple feature with The Exorcist and Taxi Driver). A sharp copy with a significant association.
