Stack of Programs and Photographs relating to NAFAD (National Association of Fashion and Accessory Designers)

Various 1965 - Three 8 x 10" b/w photographs, and 7 programs. A small cache of material relating to the African American Women's Association, which was founded in 1949 in order to further the work of African American fashion designers. The association quickly became widespread in the next couple of decades, with chapters in many American cities. The pamphlets are programs for designer showcases and conventions, including "America's Best Dressed Negro Women for 1961" at the Waldorf-Astoria in NYC, as well as showcases in San Francisco, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Detroit, and Boston. These programs are important not only for the numerous b/w photographs of ensembles and designers, but also because each program showcases a number of advertisements for businesses in each city - a remarkable and ephemeral index of African American businesses in several cities of the period. The first photograph is of a contestant in the 1965 Miss NAFA contestant, with the photographer's name rubber-stamped at verso (Frederick A. Chew) and the subjects name (Bernetta Davis). There are reproduction instructions on the verso in pencil suggesting that the picture may have been published. The second photograph has a holograph note in ink at verso stating that the subject of the portrait is model Jan Washington, wearing a dress designed by the noted Washington DC area designer Etta Arnold. The third photograph features two women wearing identical outfits, and bears no identifying marks. All items generally very good with moderate creasing and occasional discoloration (one program has a 1/2" chip to cover), and some light rippling to one of the photographs.

In Concert: Joan Baez and Bob Dylan (Original 1965 tour poster)

N.p., N.p. 1965 - Original poster for the 1965 tour by Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. This poster given by Baez to Tisha Fein, longtime talent coordinator and producer for the Grammy's, with Fein's holograph notation to the verso: "Joan Baez gave me this when we did her Midnight Special tribute--Tisha Fein." A musical variety series, "The Midnight Special" aired on NBC from 1973-1981 and featured many live performances, a rarity for television of that era. Baez appeared on the show several times, and met Fein during the taping of her season three appearance in 1976.The poster was designed by friend, artist, and fellow folk musician Eric Von Schmidt for Baez and Dylan's joint 1965 tour. Dylan reportedly disliked the poster, and only a very few were ever issued before it was shelved, making it one of the scarcer 60's music posters and Dylan items on the market. A key piece of 60's iconography, still being reproduced on posters and T-shirts, with a great association.12.5 x 19.25 inches, with the blank at the top of the poster trimmed. Near Fine, with a bruise to the upper left corner, shallow diagonal creasing to the bottom right, and only a light amount of the fading that is endemic to this poster. Archivally matted and framed, with Fein's note visible via a cut-out on the verso of the frame. Grushkin 1.101, p. 59.

        Original Concept Art by Remmington

Ballentine Books 1965 - Not since we supplied most of the important pieces to a Tolkien museum in Switzerland has such a key piece come on the market. The importance of this now iconic artwork to Tolkien’s huge popularity should not be underestimated. It was the cult status Tolkien first achieved in America on sale of millions of paperback and not in his own Britain, that would make him a household name. The Hobbit for example was not produced in the UK until 1961, 24 years after the first publication. Until 1966 his books only sold a few thousand copies a year, hardly a best seller. In fact the Tolkien society fan club first started in America, some five years before the UK version. Keep reading if you want to know more. We are pleased to offer for sale, perhaps the most important original Tolkien related art piece. It is truly deserving as a museum piece representing a key turning point in the history of Professor Tolkien popularity. While Tolkien’s own art was used in the Hobbits, none of his was used in the first lotR except the dust jackets. This is the original concept art submitted to Mrs Betty Ballantine for the 1965 Ballantine Books first paperbacks of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books in America. It was also used for the promotional posters and banners for what was to become very popular editions. It was produced by artist Barbara Remington as a concept proof before the final colour versions were produced. The medium is gouache on card, glued on illustration board with the original Ballantine stock sticker on the reverse, art piece 11 x 11 inches in size plus frame and matt width. It comes with a personal COA letter from Betty Ballantine. It also comes with two custom made frames, one for the art and one for the letter. Art frame has plexiglass panel on the reverse so you can see the Ballantine stock sticker. It also includes a poster- Come to Middle-earth which is the same artwork in colour as well as used on the cover of Fellowship of the Ring. This iconic illustration also has a slightly infamous reputation as Tolkien did not like it initially, but this does not alter its importance to Tolkien lore as we know it today. The History In 1965 Ace Paperbacks in America released unauthorised editions of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the first time in paperback. This was due to a loophole in US copyright. The rush was then on for Houghton Mifflin, Tolkien’s US publisher in collaboration with Ballantine books to release authorised paperbacks of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. To close he copyright loophole, a new version of the LotR text was needed, in which Professor Tolkien set out to make changes in 1965. As was often the case, these revisions were quite delayed, forcing Ballantine Books to rush out a new edition of the Hobbit and using Barbara Remington artwork before she had actually read the books. Thus some of the strange figures in the artwork are not in the book. There was even a lion on the cover of the Hobbit PB until it was airbrushed out. During an interview with N Marion Hage and Andwerve, Barbarasaid- "I worked for Ballantine, and as a practice, always read the books before doing the artwork. I didn’t have this luxury with the Tolkien Books, something I wish I could have changed. Ballantine was in a hurry to get these books out right away. When they commissioned me to do the artwork, I didn’t have the chance to see either book, though I tried to get a copy through my friends. So I didn’t know what they were about. I tried finding people that had read them, but the books were not readily available in the states, and so I had sketchy information at best." (As noted above, Barbara did make sketches relative to the books, afterwards, but she couldn’t get the publishers to see the point, something which is very regretful). Professor Tolkien was not impressed with the new Hobbit book cover. In a letter to Rayner Unwin, 12 September 1965, Tolkien wrote: ‘I wrote expressing(with moderation) my dislike of the cover for [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

A very nice and handsome set of the complete letters plus the hard to find index volume. David Roy Shackleton Bailey FBA (10 December 1917 ? 28 November 2005) was a British scholar of Latin literature (particularly in the field of textual criticism) who spent his academic life teaching at the University of Cambridge, the University of Michigan, and Harvard. He is best known for his work on Horace (editing his complete works for the Teubner series), and Cicero, especially his commentaries and translations of Cicero's letters. Cicero's correspondence with Atticus -- often written in subtle code to disguise political observations -- gives a wonderful insight into the life, trials, woes and tribulations of a Roman statesman, just as the old Republic was ending and the Rome of the Caesars was beginning; with Cicero as one of the last and greatest champions of free Rome. ; COMPLETE .

A complete run of the tenth edition through "Abschnitt 402" of this important bibliography issued in parts. (Sheehy, 1986, 1047). A multi-volume, extensive compilation of primary and secondary sources of works on German history. Also with the complete three volume index and volume 12 (1997-1999), which is a guide to use. Loosely inserted is a typed letter from H.P. Kraus Rare Books to Anton Hiersemann Verlag, Stuttgart inquiring about "Abschnitte 393-402," a letter of reply from Hiersemann, photocopies of the first and last page of "Abschnitte 393-402," and a four page pamphlet (published by Anton Hiersemann, Stuttgart, c.1970) detailing the state of the publication.         Untitled Drawing

Approximately 9 1/2 x 15", ink and watercolor on paper. Inscribed "to A + D" at lower left hand corner in pencil, and signed "Christopher" in the lower right and corner. A striking and mysterious drawing by Christopher Perret, who was at one time associated with Leni Sinclair, and whose artwork appeared in the pages of some of the best magazines of the era, including the Artists' Workshop journal, Poesie Vivante, and Botteghe Oscure. Two volumes of his poetry were published in fugitive editions by Outposts and Hors Commerce Press. He was also known as a translator. The drawing is a striking one, featuring a woman with a cup reversed, spilling a red liquid, possibly blood that rises to frame her. Because of the upended cup we wonder if this is a reference to the tarot. Perret died of a heart attack in 1965, the year in which this drawing is dated. He seems to have left behind many mysteries - David just handed me a copy of El Corno Emplumado 18, with a biographical note that states "we know little about the 5 Algerian poets translated here by Christopher Perret, and Perret's death leaves us without possibility of further knowledge concerning them. . . ".
