HIGGS, Peter; ENGLERT, François; BROUT, Robert; GURALNIK, Gerald; HAGEN, Carl; KIBBLE, Tom.

First editions of the first published papers to propose the existence of what are now known as the 'Higgs mechanism' and the 'Higgs boson', "the key element of the electroweak theory that forms part of the Standard Model of particle physics, and of many models, such as the Grand Unified Theory, that go beyond it" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_PRL_symmetry_breaking_papers). All three papers introduce a version of the Higgs mechanism, that of Englert & Brout being the first to appear, but only Higgs' paper took the further step of predicting the existence of the Higgs boson. In 2013 Englert and Higgs received the Nobel Prize in Physics "for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which was recently confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider" (Brout could not be awarded the prize as he had passed away in 2011). "Particle physicists study matter made from fundamental particles whose interactions are mediated by exchange particles known as force carriers. At the beginning of the 1960s a number of these particles had been discovered or proposed, along with theories suggesting how they relate to each other, some of which had already been reformulated as field theories in which the objects of study are not particles and forces, but quantum fields and their symmetries. However, attempts to unify known fundame … [Click Below for Full Description]

HEMINGWAY (Ernest)
Paris, Gallimard, coll. MacArthur, Douglas
New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1964. Signed limited first edition of MacArthur's autobiography. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated, frontispiece. Signed by Douglas MacArthur, this is number 359. Near fine in a near fine slipcase. A nice example. MacArthur's career was one of the longest and most controversial of any American military figure, including active service as a general from 1918 to 1951. His genius as a leader was demonstrated most lucidly in his pioneering reforms as West Point superintendent; his bold and imaginative campaigns, with minimum logistical support, during the war against Japan; and, perhaps most important, his enlightened administration of the Japanese occupation" (ANB).

BLAKE, Quentin (illustrator). J.P. MARTIN (author).
1964. London; Jonathan Cape. 1964-1973. 8vo. 6 volumes; bound in salmon pink, bright blue, yellow, red, turquoise, and mid blue linson boards, with spines lettered gilt and with pictorial endpapers in all but the final volume, preserved in white pictorial dustwrappers witin a purple cloth-covered slipcase with ribbon-pull; pp. [viii], 9-160; [viii], 9-176; [x], 11-172; [x], 11-184; [x], 11-192; [x], 11-171; with line illustrations throughout by Quentin Blake; externally fine with light speckling to the edges of volumes 3, 4 and 5, internally clean and sound throughout, protected by remarkably fresh dustwrappers, 3 of which are unclipped, with a slight horizontal crease to top edge of upper panel of Uncle, a faint score mark to upper panel of Treacle Trouble, a couple of inconspicuous horizontal scratches to spines, and minor rubbing to upper fore-edge fold of Claudius the Camel; phenomenally scarce as a set in this condition. First editions, with each volume signed in ink by Quentin Blake to the title-page. A few of the 'Uncle' titles are very elusive which makes assembling a set in uniform condition a very difficult task. This popular series of book about the pompous, fabulously wealthy, purple dressing-gown-wearing elephant called Uncle have inspired almost a cult following across the world. Although ostensibly a "grand, crazy comedy" the stories, it has been claimed, have multiple layers of meaning with some reading it as an exposé on the hypocrisy of society and others a critique of capitalism (Eccleshare. 1001 Children's Books).
