Ross MacDonald
1964. This is an archive of manuscript material from both the book and magazine versions of a key Macdonald novel, THE CHILL (1963-64). Consists of: 1. 83 holograph (handwritten) pages of early draft material for the novel, including several false starts. The working title at this point was "A Mess of Shadows." 2. A 218 page complete manuscript, consisting of 173 pages of heavily corrected carbon typescript with 45 pages of handwritten text interspersed. Also included are a handwritten title page and two pages of notes (one typed, one handwritten) titled "Revisions of The Chill." This is the working manuscript for Macdonald's condensed version of the novel which appeared in Cosmopolitan magazine. The typescript pages are from the original complete typescript and bear numerous deletions and emendations while the interspersed handwritten pages are textual bridges written by Macdonald especially for this version. 3. 108 page carbon typescript - with some handwritten corrections - titled: "The Chill (short version)". The finished retyped version of the above working manuscript. 4. A copy of the issue of Cosmopolitan magazine (Volume 155, Number 2) in which the condensed version of The Chill was published in August 1963. This is an important manuscript by this premier detective novelist, documenting Macdonald's method of composition - here a painstaking distillation of this full-length novel to its essence. See all 12 pictures. In fine quarter morocco, buckram folding case. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Naipaul, V.S
Andre Deutsch 1964-1990, London. First editions of each of the author's works in his acclaimed Indian Trilogy. Octavo, original cloth. Each volume is signed by V.S. Naipaul on the title page. Each are fine in near fine to fine dust jackets. Trinidadian essayist and novelist V.S. Naipaul has won both the 1971 Booker Prize and the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature. An Area of Darkness is a travelogue detailing Naipaul's trip through India in the early sixties. "The world Naipaul sees is of course no void at all: it is a world dense with physical and social phenomena, brutally alive with the complications and contradictions of actual human endeavour. This world of Naipaul's is in fact charged with what can only be described as a romantic view of reality, an almost unbearable tension between the idea and the physical fact." Early Copy of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl Signed on Official Business Card Insert by Otto H. Frank This incredible piece of history is authenticated by PSA/DNA, and includes their full letter of authenticity. The authentication can be viewed in their registry, number AF03043. This early edition of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl contains an inserted Otto H. Frank business card with a hand written note reading "Congratulations to Richard Allen Levin for his barmitzvah", dated "April 25th 1964", and signed Otto Frank. The card is tastefully pasted onto the title page, and an inscription on the opposite page describes the circumstances of the signature. While often inscriptions take away from the value, many discerning collectors would say that the inscriptions contained here add to it. A friend of Otto Frank asked him to sign a card to be inserted into a copy of Anne Frank's diary to be presented to a young man on his bar mitzvah, as documented both by Otto Frank's inscription and the inscription of the gift giver. This piece can and should be passed down for generations, perhaps presented as a bar mitzvah gift now or in future generations. Please feel free to ask any questions!

Suzanne ZAVRIAN
New York: Extensions. Condition: Very good. 8vos. Saddle-stapled wraps. Offset printing. Near fine or better overall. Bright, clean, and sharp. 96pp. each. Taking their name from Marshall McLuhan's 1964 UNDERSTANDING MEDIA, Zavrion and Neugroschel's EXTENSIONS bridged the worlds of art of poetry in ways not unlike 0 TO 9. As Gwen Allen wrote, "They were interested in how the magazine itself was a medium capable of extending language into other realms," a fact evident from the very first issue, which printed a version of Dan Graham's "Schema," four texts by Vito Acconci, and graffiti poems written by students in Paris during May 1968. Other contributors throughout the run include Arakawa, Mary Beach, Max Bense, André du Bouchet, André Breton, René Char, Jean Daive, Diane Di Prima, Jean Dubuffet, Charles Henri Ford, Jim Fulkerson, Dick Gallup, Jochen Gerz, Madeline Gins, Carter Ratcliff, Georg Trakl, Oswald Wiener, Miodrag Pavlovic, Erling Salomsen, Tony Towle, Emmett Williams, and many more. Used with wear and tear. Heinemann 1964. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. This was to Daniel's father during a stay in the hospital. Wilbur told me he didn't like the man. (This was in the context of buying the book from me due to its personal association inscription). I'm sure this was a joke as we sometimes make of our in-laws. The Sunbird is Wilbur's favorite book and the emblem features on his personal letterhead and as a logo. I think the story was based on one of his earliest exploration adventures, something he did between writing books. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Wilbur will be releasing his memoirs this Spring so now it the time to invest again. From early 2000's until 2011 we were the world's largest dealer of Wilbur's early and signed books. It was our privilege to meet him privately, including at his home, to have him verify signed books and to line-sign books for me only (Niso would not allow the practice for long). He was concerned about the integrity of those dealers selling his signed books and it was a great honor to become friends with him for a time. Him and Niso also bought rarer copies as well as other memorabilia from me like film scripts. After the rarest titles, like this one, were sold into collections, I moved onward in my book dealing focus. One of the secrets of the trade I can share with you … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peter FORAKIS
New York: Tibor de Nagy Editions, 1964. Condition: Very good. 4to. Stapled pictorial wraps. Some faint soil to front wrapper. Mild toning overall. Very good. One of 500 unnumbered copies. A scarce and important publication which apparently ran just one issue. Forakis, Yampolsky, and Fleming (all artist's better known for other mediums) each contribute one work or "story" utilizing the conventions of the comic (panels, word balloons, etc.), but all non-narrative and veering towards the completely abstract, psychedelic and/or nonsensical. The motifs and styles clearly prefigure the work of later underground comic artists, and this is easily among the earliest we've seen to exhibit a non-commercial, "underground" aesthetic (albeit mixed with a fine art influence). Indeed, this publication predates by at least several months what is generally considered the first underground comic: Jack Jackson's GOD NOSE (which though printed the same year was clearly published sometime after January). And though the three pieces in GROPE don't quite demonstrate the over-the-top subversive quality one typically associates with the underground, all three clearly exhibit a prescient style that would soon come to fuller fruition in R. Crumb and others. Curiously, published by Tibor de Nagy, who had previously done nothing quite like this. OCLC shows just 12 holdings. [Attributes: First Edition]
