FORAKIS, Peter (Editor); Phyllis Yampolsky and Dean Flemming
Tibor de Nagy Editions, 1964. First Edition. Wraps. 4to. Stapled pictorial wraps. Some faint soil to front wrapper. Mild toning overall. Very good. One of 500 unnumbered copies. Very good. A scarce and important publication which apparently ran just one issue. Forakis, Yampolsky, and Fleming (all artist's better known for other mediums) each contribute one work or "story" utilizing the conventions of the comic (panels, word balloons, etc.), but all non-narrative and veering towards the completely abstract, psychedelic and/or nonsensical. The motifs and styles clearly prefigure the work of later underground comic artists, and this is easily among the earliest we've seen to exhibit a non-commercial, "underground" aesthetic (albeit mixed with a fine art influence). Indeed, this publication predates by at least several months what is generally considered the first underground comic: Jack Jackson's GOD NOSE (which though printed the same year was clearly published sometime after January). And though the three pieces in GROPE don't quite demonstrate the over-the-top subversive quality one typically associates with the underground, all three clearly exhibit a prescient style that would soon come to fuller fruition in R. Crumb and others. Curiously, published by Tibor de Nagy, who had previously done nothing quite like this. OCLC shows just 12 holdings. [Attributes: First Edition]

Bacon, Francis] John Russell
Methuen, London, 1964. First edition of this wonderfully illustrated work on Francis Bacon. Octavo, original boards, illustrated throughout. Presentation copy, boldly inscribed on the front free endpaper, "For George with all best wishes Francis Bacon." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket photograph of Bacon on the front panel by Cecil Beaton. Francis Bacon was a figurative painter known for his emotionally charged raw imagery and fixation on personal motifs. Best known for his depictions of popes, crucifixions and portraits of close friends, his abstracted figures are typically isolated in geometrical cages which give them vague 3D depth, set against flat, nondescript backgrounds. Bacon said that he saw images "in series", and his work, which numbers c. 590 extant paintings along with many others he destroyed, typically focuses on a single subject for sustained periods, often in triptych or diptych formats. His output can be broadly described as sequences or variations on single motifs; including the 1930s Picasso-influenced bio-morphs and Furies, the 1940s male heads isolated in rooms or geometric structures, the 1950s screaming popes, the mid-to-late 1950s animals and lone figures, the early 1960s crucifixions, the mid to late 1960s portraits of friends, the 1970s self-portraits, and the cooler more technical 1980s paintings. Bacon took up painting in his twenties, having drifted in the late 1920s and early 1930s as an interior decorator, bon vivant and gambler. He said that his artistic career was delayed because he spent too long looking for subject matter that cou … [Click Below for Full Description]

SINATRA, Frank.) KENNEDY, John F.
Washington, DC: United States Government Printing Office, 1962-1963-1964. 3 volumes, large octavo (247 x 170 mm). Contemporary black skiver by California Bookbinding (with their ticket), spines with four raised bands, gilt lettered direct, gilt arabesque in head and tail compartments, sides with single-line gilt border, black gloss surface paper endpapers. A few patches of abrasion at extremities, some very light marking to covers. A very good set. Portrait frontispieces; titles with Great Seal of the United States printed in blue; printed in double columns. First editions, first printings. From the library of Frank Sinatra, his name in gilt to each front cover. The relationship between the singer and JFK has been discussed in numerous books and articles, particularly with regard to purported Mafia connections and other piquant details. However, Sinatra biographer Kitty Kelley gives a succinct appraisal of their relationship: "Always a strong Democrat, Frank had idolized Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1944 and contributed five thousand dollars to his campaign. He had supported Harry Truman in 1948 and had sung for Adlai Stevenson in 1952 and 1956, but this time he was personally committed to the candidate in a way he had never been before. Jack Kennedy - young, brilliant, rich, and handsome - was an extraordinary man from an Irish-American dynasty, and his impact on Frank was remarkable. In turn, Jack Kennedy enjoyed his glamorous Hollywood romps with Sinatra, who personified the sleek, swinging, emancipated male who can do anything he wants and never pay the consequences" (H … [Click Below for Full Description]

CUNNINGHAM, MERCE
1964. The rare and fine choreographic drawing measures 8.5 x 11 inches and floats on a dark gray mat overlaid with a white mat, framed in black satin finished wood, matted and framed in museum quality materials, framed in 5/8/inch black satin wood. Frame measures 16 x 18 3/4. Condition: horizontal folds show, otherwise fine. Cunningham's dances emphasize strength and agility, and his choreography notoriously demands of his dancers difficult, nearly impossible physical feats of athleticism. Along with Paul Taylor, Cunningham is often billed as the greatest living modern dance choreographer. Cunningham was long-term collaborator with composer John Cage. www.schulsonautographs.com.

Used with wear and tear. Heinemann 1964. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. With a tipped in newspaper article as shown. The Wehlburg's were neighbors of the Smiths in Wilbur's youth. He couldn't remember anymore about them other than they ask him to personally inscribe a copy on release of the book. As friends of his parents, not him, it was a somewhat awkward obligation as we all can related. I can say from personal experience Wilbur is a kind man and loyal to his fans and would have appreciated the Wehlburg's request, even as friends of his parents. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Wilbur will be releasing his memoirs this Spring so now it the time to invest again. From early 2000's until 2011 we were the world's largest dealer of Wilbur's early and signed books. It was our privilege to meet him privately, including at his home, to have him verify signed books and to line-sign books for me only (Niso would not allow the practice for long). He was concerned about the integrity of those dealers selling his signed books and it was a great honor to become friends with him for a time. Him and Niso also bought rarer copies as well as other memorabilia from me like film scripts. After the rarest titles, like this one, were sold into collections, I moved onward in my book dealing focus. One of the secrets of the trade I can share wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. This was to Daniel's father during a stay in the hospital. Wilbur told me he didn't like the man. (This was in the context of buying the book from me due to its personal association inscription). I'm sure this was a joke as we sometimes make of our in-laws. The Sunbird is Wilbur's favorite book and the emblem features on his personal letterhead and as a logo. I think the story was based on one of his earliest exploration adventures, something he did between writing books. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Used with wear and tear. Viking Press 1964. Technically the Viking edition was published before the UK edition making it the first, but thereafter UK editions are the true firsts. After the rarest titles, like this one, were sold into collections, I moved onward in my book dealing focus. One of the secrets of the trade I can share with you is that neither authors or publishers kept the old records of what was published how, when or why. No one thought to keep the written records of contemporary books and most information has been carried word of mouth, embellished on the way or frankly just made up. (that has certainly changed now). Used with wear and tear. Heinemann 1964. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. These "A" signed Lions are the first Wilbur ever signed at an event and while he was experimenting with his signature style. He dropped the A for speed of signature. A signed Lions are all "reprinted before publication", but still a first edition. 10,000 first were printed then an addtional 4000 before publication when they realised the demand for the US Viking edition was so strong. The first shipment to South Africa were confiscated by custom for being in violation of the strict decency laws of the time. (this novel contains graphically described sex). Wilbur has said this lead to demand for the novel, not his writing generally. A batch of RBP were then sent for the book's release in Salisbury. Wilbur, a then tax inspector, slipped out on his lunch hour for the signing event in which no one came. Rather than have the books returned to the publisher, he signed them all Wilbur A Smith. This was a "stack" of books in which only 7 to our knowledge have come on the market over the years. Wilbur acknowledged these were is earliest signed books intended for the public, not friends etc. I have sold him a copy for his own collection. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Wilbur will be releasing his memoirs this Spring so now it the time to invest again. From early … [Click Below for Full Description]
