MAO (Tse-Tung or Zedung.)
[No location, but probably Beijing or Tianjin, May 1964]. Duodecimo. Original red vinyl, title to front cover in blind, printed errata slip in rear pocket. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Bright, sharp covers, occasional underlining to text, hint of soiling to inside rear cover, tiny split at ends of final page gutter, text block entirely sound. A near-fine, fresh copy. Frontispiece portrait of Chairman Mao with tissue guard; Lin Biao calligraphic endorsement printed in brown (no priority). First edition, first printing, in the first state with uncorrected text, and rare errata leaf at rear. The first edition, printed for the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army, was issued in two distinct states and bindings: the uncorrected first state text in red vinyl plastic, and the corrected second state text in printed wrappers. The corrected copies, issued in wrappers and intended for high-ranking officers, were released first; the uncorrected copies, issued in red vinyl and for use by brigade teams of up to eight men, were released shortly afterwards, as the sturdier binding took longer to manufacture. The mistake in the text occurs at the bottom of p. 82 and the top of p. 83, consisting of a transposed character, reading "li men wo yong" instead of "li yong wo men" (Schiller, p. 36). This copy also has the Lin Biao calligraphic endorsement leaf intact, after the frontispiece. In 1972 an edict was issued that Lin's name was to be obliterated from history, following disclosures that he had plotted a coup and planned to as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Watson, James D; Francis Crick; Maurice Wilkins; Arthur Kornberg, Joshua Lederberg
Elsevier Publishing Company, Amsterdam, 1964. First edition of this collection of Nobel Lectures in physiology or medicine from the years 1942-1962. Thick Octavo, original yellow cloth. Signed by all three Nobel Prize-winning scientists Francis Crick, James D. Watson and Maurice Wilkins on the title page. They were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962, "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material."Fine in a very good dust jacket with some closed tears and toning to the spine. An exceptional piece signed by these Nobel Prize-winning scientists. In the early 1950s, the race to discover DNA was on. At Cambridge University, graduate student Francis Crick and research fellow James Watson had become interested, impressed especially by Pauling's work. Meanwhile at King's College in London, Maurice Wilkins (b. 1916) and Rosalind Franklin were also studying DNA. The Cambridge team's approach was to make physical models to narrow down the possibilities and eventually create an accurate picture of the molecule. The King's team took an experimental approach, looking particularly at x-ray diffraction images of DNA. Watson and Crick took a crucial conceptual step, suggesting the molecule was made of two chains of nucleotides, each in a helix as Franklin had found, but one going up and the other going down. Crick had just learned of Chargaff's findings about base pairs in the summer of 1952. He added that to the model, so that matching base pairs interlocked in the middle of the double he … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ernest Hemingway
NY: 1964. Hemingway, Ernest. A MOVABLE FEAST. 4to, editorial typescript consisting of 148 stamp-numbered pages, beginning with the first chapter through the end of the published book. At the top of the first page is a typed label: "Title: A MOVABLE [sic] FEAST / Author: Ernest Hemingway / Pub. Date March (Scribner." The final line is in ink. The "typescript" is on paper watermarked Atlantic Bond 20 and seems to have been reproduced by offset lithography, rather than any of the plain paper xerographic systems available at the time, giving this precedence over any previously described copied or printed galley proofs. Minor typographical and punctuation corrections appear as they were made by hand on the original. The preliminary material, including the title-page epigraph, the author's preface, and Mary Hemingway's note, was apparently not part of this version since the page numbering begins with 00001. At least two different typewriters were used. The whole is contained in a plain buff folder with a penciled note indicating that it was originally sent to an advance reader for the Book-of-the-Month Club. In this case, it was Donald Gallup, who was an acknowledged expert on Hemingway and other personalities mentioned in the book, notably Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, and other American Expatriates in Paris. This item was acquired by us from Gallup and first sold to a private collector in 1987. We are not aware of any other copy being offered for sale since then. Nor does this item appear to be cataloged in the Scribner's Archives at Princeton, The Kennedy Library, or … [Click Below for Full Description]

(WHITE, E B ) THOREAU, Henry David
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, (1964). Boston: Houghton Mifflin. (1964). First thus: reissued in the Riverside Literary Series, with an introduction by E.B. White and, while not marked as such, this was E.B. White's own copy. Offered together with three other Walden-themed books from White's library: Walden Revisited by George F. Whicher, which is signed by White in 1945; Discovery at Walden by Roland Wells Robbins, inscribed by Robbins to White in 1947; and Index to Walden by Joseph Jones, inscribed by Jones to White in 1955. Four books on Walden from the library of E.B. White, a more powerful figure in the history of the environmental movement than most people realize: in 1958, it was White, in his position at the New Yorker, who was approached by Rachel Carson with the suggestion that he, White, cover the story of lawsuits filed in opposition to aerial sprayings of insecticide. White re-assigned the story back to Carson (later saying that he didn't "know a chlorinated hydrocarbon from a squash bug"), forwarding her letter to editor William Shawn. Carson's Silent Spring was serialized in the New Yorker in 1962, prior to its book publication. Condition, in the order listed above: fine without dust jacket, as issued; near fine, lacking the dust jacket; very good in a very good dust jacket; and very good in stapled wrappers. In 1953, White wrote of Walden in the New Yorker: “Every man, I think, reads one book in his life, and this one is mine.” First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine.

Signed, inscribed and dated by the author to a bookplate affixed to the title page: 'With lots of good wishes, Roald Dahl 1974". Precedes the UK edition, which was published three years later. Rare to find in this condition bearing a unique inscription from the author. Slight pushing to spine tips with some residue to front endpaper from a removed bookplate; boards in very fine and clean condition indeed, as are contents - near fine. Original and unclipped dust jacket (bearing price of $3.95) has very minor and occasional traces of wear to top edge; a couple of very small areas of mild rubbing to spine panel; small and unobtrusive scratch to rear panel - near fine or better. A beautiful, near fine copy overall.
