Harry Callahan
Harry Callahan. Harry Callahan: Photographs. 1964. First Edition, 1964, Limited to 1500 Copies. Exceptional Condition. Containing 126 full-page tritone and duotone plates on coated stock printed on one side, the book measures approximately 13.5" x 12" and is bound in black covered boards with silver titling stamped on the cover with a matching black cloth slipcase. The book is in FINE condition except for the usual discoloration of the endsheets (apparently caused by the use of non-archival glue) and owners name on the endpaper in a Near Fine+ slipcase with some minor soiling. Overall, this is an exceptional copy of a beautiful photobook that is becoming increasingly scarce. This is a first limited edition of the highly acclaimed photobook "Harry Callahan: Photographs" published by the El Mochuelo Gallery, Santa Barbara in 1949 with a stated limitation of 1500 copies. Early in his life, Callahan studied engineering and worked in the photography labs of General Motors but when he met Moholy-Nagy in 1946 he decided to make artistic photography his career. This book, published by an art gallery at a time when large publishers were not supporting such deluxe photographic book projects, remains the most sought after monograph of Callahan's work. Emphasis is on his minimalist nature studies, elegantly modern images of his wife Eleanor, city street scenes, and multiple image experiments. "I think I've photographed the same things all my life," Harry Callahan said in 1991. "Buildings and grasses and people walking." From these modest subjects, Callahan became one of the legendary A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Atmospheric photograph of the mysterious Mr. Van Dine (pseudonym of Willard Huntington Wright). Known to us primarily as the writer of Golden Age mysteries, especially the Philo Vance books, Van Dine was in his day a well-known art critic. This photograph is evocative, with Van Dine casting a dramatic shadow (shades of The Thin Man) and, of course, smoking a cigarette. Inscribed to a Miss Y. Billy Garden of New York City. Attached is a letter from Miss Garden in which she details information about Mr. Wright's Scottish terriers. Miss Garden also described interviewing Van Dine in his apartment; he was dressed in a handsome blue robe with a blue Persian cat perched on his shoulder. We have not determined Miss Garden's relationship with Van Dine, but know that in 1964 she was involved in renewing the copyright of the Philo Vance murder cases(cf. https://archive.org/stream/copyrightrenewals1923-1964/1964.txt). A fantastic signed image.

Ross MacDonald
1964. This is an archive of manuscript material from both the book and magazine versions of a key Macdonald novel, THE CHILL (1963-64). Consists of: 1. 83 holograph (handwritten) pages of early draft material for the novel, including several false starts. The working title at this point was "A Mess of Shadows." 2. A 218 page complete manuscript, consisting of 173 pages of heavily corrected carbon typescript with 45 pages of handwritten text interspersed. Also included are a handwritten title page and two pages of notes (one typed, one handwritten) titled "Revisions of The Chill." This is the working manuscript for Macdonald's condensed version of the novel which appeared in Cosmopolitan magazine. The typescript pages are from the original complete typescript and bear numerous deletions and emendations while the interspersed handwritten pages are textual bridges written by Macdonald especially for this version. 3. 108 page carbon typescript - with some handwritten corrections - titled: "The Chill (short version)". The finished retyped version of the above working manuscript. 4. A copy of the issue of Cosmopolitan magazine (Volume 155, Number 2) in which the condensed version of The Chill was published in August 1963. This is an important manuscript by this premier detective novelist, documenting Macdonald's method of composition - here a painstaking distillation of this full-length novel to its essence. See all 12 pictures. In fine quarter morocco, buckram folding case. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Elizabeth, Queen and Prince Philip
1964. Royal Christmas card with an original black and white photograph of a young Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip seated in an automobile amidst a cheering crowd. Boldly signed by Queen Elizabeth, "Elizabeth" and Prince Philip, "Philip." In fine condition. A striking example. Elizabeth II has been Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand since 6 February 1952. She ascended the throne at the age of 25, upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952, and was proclaimed queen by her various privy and executive councils shortly afterwards. The coronation took place more than a year later on June 2, 1953 because of the tradition that holding such a festival is inappropriate during the period of mourning that follows the death of a monarch. Dubuffet, Jean, French painter and sculptor (1901-1985).
Paris, Vence, Le Touquet u. o. O. , 1949-1964. 4to u. 8vo. 54 pages. Tlw. gedr. For his literary contributions, Bellow was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize for Literature, and the National Medal of Arts. He is the only writer to have won the National Book Award three times, and the only writer to have been nominated for it six times. In the words of the Swedish Nobel Committee, his writing exhibited "exuberant ideas, flashing irony, hilarious comedy and burning compassion... the mixture of rich picaresque novel and subtle analysis of our culture, of entertaining adventure, drastic and tragic episodes in quick succession interspersed with philosophic conversation, all developed by a commentator with a witty tongue and penetrating insight into the outer and inner complications that drive us to act, or prevent us from acting, and that can be called the dilemma of our age." Herzog is a 1964 novel by Saul Bellow. In a nod to the epistolary novels of early British literature, letters from the protagonist constitute much of the text. Herzog won the 1965 National Book Award for Fiction. Time Magazine … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brainard, Joe)
New York: Lorenz Gudi, 1964. Good+, light soiling to cover, light age-toning and occassional soiling as seems typical for publications of this nature... Mimeographed or xeroxed sheets stapled together, Printed by mechanical means upon 8.5" x 14" sized sheets, printed on one side only. 56 unnumbered sheets including covers, the 52nd and 53rd sheets are the same. Comics drawn by Underground artist Joe Brainard in collaboration with John Ashbery, Bill Berkson, Ted Berrigan, Robert Dash, Edwin Denby, Kenward Elmslie, Dick Gallup, Barbara Guest, Kenneth Koch, Frank Lima, Gerard Malanga, Frank O'Hara, Ron Padgett, Peter Schjeldahl, James Schuyler, Johnny Stanton, Tony Towle, Tom Veitch. Exceedingly rare, and quite an imortant collaborative (if short-lived at 2 issues) effort. First, and much scarcer issue of the two issues of Brainard's artist periodical devoted to storyless or abstract comics. Illustrated throughout by Brainard with texts by many important poets of the New York School, including Bill Berkson, Ted Berrigan, Edwin Denby, Barbara Guest, Kenneth Koch, Frank O'Hara, James Schuyler, Tom Veitch, Kenward Elmslie, Gerard Malanga, Ron Padgett, Johnny Stanton, and Tony Towle.

FLEMING, Ian.
London: Jonathan Cape, 1964. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine in silver, Japanese characters to front board in gilt, wood grain endpapers. With the Richard Chopping designed dust jacket. Housed in a custom black quarter morocco solander box. A few pencilled underlines in the first two chapters, free endpapers slightly browned, a couple of very faint spots to rear panel of jacket; an very good, bright copy. First edition, first impression, one of two dedication copies, inscribed by Fleming to one of the two dedicatees, Richard Hughes, on the front free endpaper: "To Dikko-san from Fleming-san. With all affection." In 1959, Ian Fleming was given a licence to travel. Fleming had written seven James Bond novels when he was approached by one of his colleagues at The Sunday Times with a plum journalistic assignment: to take a five-week, all-expenses-paid trip to visit the world's most exciting cities. Fleming's trip took in Hong Kong, Macau and Tokyo, then Honolulu, and home via the major U.S. cities. Along the way, he gathered material for his novels and his journalism: his Thrilling Cities tour became a popular newspaper series and a bestselling guidebook, while also furnishing much of the backdrop and research for the five Bond novels and seven short stories that would follow. In Tokyo, Fleming's local guide was Richard "Dikko" Hughes, The Sunday Times's Far East correspondent, an ebullient, hard-drinking Australian ex-boxer and part-time spy for MI6. Hughes recruited a Japanese journalist, Toreo "Tiger" Saito, to join them. Fleming was clear about what he wanted … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gorey, Edward
Four sheets, three of which measure 8 1/2 by 11 inches; the single sheet of text is smaller, measuring 8 by 6 inches, and is on blue paper. The pages reveal the unfolding of Gorey's creative process in developing the story and preliminary illustrations for his book, The Remembered Visit. The text page, which is dated April 16, 1964, shows Gorey's conceptual ideas for the main characters of the tale: a "dear little girl, Drusilla" and a "wonderful old man, famous for something, lofty + cultured in the dim past," who would become Mr. Crague. The sheets with the sketches for the illustrations show their evolution as they move from vague shapes to a structured page, finished with measurements and ruled lines. One of these sheets is dated April 21, 1964. Concept drawings by Gorey rarely appear on the market. Some creasing to all leaves, likely from mailing, otherwise fine. Together with a copy of the first edition of the book, published in 1965 by Simon and Schuster. Bound in pictorial boards with matching dust wrapper. Some foxing to edges of text block and wrappers, minor edgewear to boards, else crisp and near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
