Condition: Very Good. 1964 Alfred Knopf NY Charlie And Chocolate Factory Book 1st Edition Dahl Fine . Condition is Very Good. Shipped with USPS Media Mail. Stunning crisp book. Pages extremely crisp and unread. Previous owner had their name badge mounted on the first page, not written. No writing or notes, again unread very crisp pages. Dust jacket has one tear and some stains on back; smaller tears on bottom edge of dust cover at binding bottom and top. Actual cover is chocolate brown and creme white. Shows some finger smudges and light ink but not much(2 small red ink spots of back of hardcover). The ISBN from brief research on the back of the dust jacket may or may not mean a later printing of the first edition. That being said, seems like there are less of these out there than the ones without the isbn. The price has been clipped off the dust jacket. Can't overstate the crispness of the pages. Doubt there are many out there with pages in this good of condition. Excellent addition to any collection or museum. If u want to make an offer we will work with u. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator: A near fine copy with one name [Highton] to reverse of the half title. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper 'To Andrew and Rebecca [Highton]/Love/Roald Dahl/1977'. Additionally, Dahl has written 'American Edition' on the front pastedown. In a near fine unclipped wrapper with chipping to the corners and spine tips. A little staining to the top of the rear panel. A superb pair of books with a strong association to Dahl himself. Douglas Highton attended St Peter's prep school in Weston-super-Mare with Roald Dahl. As a friend, Douglas supported Roald during an incident at school, which Roald would never forget and later recounted in his autobiographical book 'Boy'. Douglas also appears anecdotally in the short story 'Lucky Break', and as a character in the short story 'The Swan'. The two stayed in touch over the years and Douglas would visit Roald at home in Great Missenden where Roald kindly signed many books for Douglas' grandchildren, Andrew and Rebecca [Attrib … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clellon Holmes, John
New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc, 1964. First edition of Clellon Holmes' third novel. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Phyllis- all good wishes- John Clellon Holmes." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. Five years before Kerouac's On the Road, Holmes's novel Go introduced the kind of lives and themes that later would be called Beat. Get Home Free, first published in 1964, also portrays the desperate and dissipated youth that congregated in New York City in the '50s. The novel takes its title from the child's game of kick-the-can, where players scurry back to home base; only here, the participants are existentialist adults. Bohemians Dan Verger and May Delano break up and, in separate sections, we follow them on visits home, Dan to the Connecticut shore ``to come to terms with a stalled life,'' and May to Louisiana, where she confronts her past as a Southern belle. Dan and May gain self-confidence, and, eventually calmer, more sober, they both return to New York determined to forge ahead. In Holmes's world, where ``even the hopelessness becomes curiously moving,'' May and Dan succeed by recognizing that their talky search for all the answers about love and their times, initially inspiring, has become tiring and even deadly; they shut up and just live. Infused with the characteristic Beat rawness, at times the novel is painful to read. It also often crackles with social observations that still speak true today, and there are many fine set pieces that evoke the splendor of rural life and the a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-Tung or Zedung)
Central Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Beijing, 1964. First edition, later printing of Quotations from Chairman Mao. Duodecimo, in the original iconic red vinyl, title to front cover in blind, frontispiece portrait of Chairman Mao. With the textual error on pp. 82/83 corrected and a Lin Biao's calligraphic endorsement leaf after the frontispiece tipped in from a later printing. In 1972, an edict was issued that Lin's name was to be obliterated from history, following disclosures that he had plotted a coup and planned to assassinate Mao; consequently, "many surviving copies in the Chinese language have that page legitimately torn away, mutilated or censored" (Schiller, p. 36). In near fine condition. Housed in a custom red slipcase. Printed for the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army, the first edition of Mao's Quotations, was issued in two states and bindings: the uncorrected first state text in red vinyl plastic, and the corrected second state in paper wrappers. The corrected copies, issued in wrappers and intended for high-ranking officers, were released first; the uncorrected copies, issued in red vinyl and for use by brigade teams, were released shortly afterwards, as the sturdier binding took longer to manufacture. By the start of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, the red vinyl design had become symbolic of Mao's slogan "The East is Red", and the paper wrappers were discontinued. The year 1966 also "signaled the start of a major translation and publication project when the Little Red Book was issued in over 50 diff … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ross MacDonald
1964. This is an archive of manuscript material from both the book and magazine versions of a key Macdonald novel, THE CHILL (1963-64). Consists of: 1. 83 holograph (handwritten) pages of early draft material for the novel, including several false starts. The working title at this point was "A Mess of Shadows." 2. A 218 page complete manuscript, consisting of 173 pages of heavily corrected carbon typescript with 45 pages of handwritten text interspersed. Also included are a handwritten title page and two pages of notes (one typed, one handwritten) titled "Revisions of The Chill." This is the working manuscript for Macdonald's condensed version of the novel which appeared in Cosmopolitan magazine. The typescript pages are from the original complete typescript and bear numerous deletions and emendations while the interspersed handwritten pages are textual bridges written by Macdonald especially for this version. 3. 108 page carbon typescript - with some handwritten corrections - titled: "The Chill (short version)". The finished retyped version of the above working manuscript. 4. A copy of the issue of Cosmopolitan magazine (Volume 155, Number 2) in which the condensed version of The Chill was published in August 1963. This is an important manuscript by this premier detective novelist, documenting Macdonald's method of composition - here a painstaking distillation of this full-length novel to its essence. See all 12 pictures. In fine quarter morocco, buckram folding case. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

1964. The books in the set are in good to very good condition, showing signs of previous use, with clean and unmarked pages with the following noted exceptions/defects: 1. Book 7 has ink scribbling inside the front and back cover and a closed tear to the front fly leaf page as well as some edge foxing at the top edge of the pages. 2. Book 11 has damage to the cover at the top of the spine along the front edge as shown in the photos. 3. Book 15 has a surface tear at the top of the spine that has been glued and taped. 4. The binding of Book 20 has been repaired with Brodart book glue where it had begun to separate along the inside of the front hinge. For your careful consideration here is a fabulous collection of vintage Uncle Arthur's Bedtimes Stories, Volume 1-20, published by Review and Herald Washington, D.C. Publication dates range from 1964 - 1968. The set has wonderful stories and delightful pictures. It's a terrific collection to obtain and very rare and difficult to find in a complete set. The last 15 books in the set are out of print. Uncle Arthur wrote children's stories for over 50 years. Generations of children bought a set for their children and grandchildren through out most of the 20th Century. His most celebrated set is this 20 volume set from the 1960s--beautifully illustrated with water color and oil by artists like Harry Anderson and Russ Harlan. The true stories are character building and great for homeschool, or for telling children's stories in church. This is a very rare set of books. A 'very good' condition set recently sold at auction on EBAY … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUGHES, Langston
1964. Unbound. Near Fine. A small archive dealing with the publication of the influential anthology that was edited by Langston Hughes. As follows: 1. Typed Letter Signed "Langston Hughes" on his New York letterhead and dated 24 May 1964 to William H. Crawford of the Philadelphia Writers Club. Fine with envelope. Hughes sends regrets that he cannot attend a "literary evening" for *New Negro Poets: U.S.A.* which was to be held in Philadelphia, saying he will be in the Midwest to receive an honorary degree (from Western Reserve, his first from a white university) and from there will travel to California to visit an elderly uncle. Hughes offers to sign copies of the book if Crawford will send them to New York. In a typed postscript, Hughes notes his previous honorary degrees from Lincoln and Howard. 2. Small printed handbill for the Philadelphia Writers Club "Literary Evening" for the book, featuring as guest speaker the historian John Henrik Clark. Folded as issued. 3. Typed list of the names and addresses of the 37 poets included in the book. Two sheets of onion skin paper stapled in the upper corner, it includes some annotations to the list in Hughes' hand: crossing out Ted Joans' address in Morocco, changing Dudley Randall's, and noting that mail to Allen Polite should be sent care of Le Roi Jones. Presumably sent in by Hughes to Crawford for his reference. 4. Printed flyer. Measuring 8.5" x 11". Invitation to a New York autograph party for the book, hosted by Hughes and Market Place Gallery in Harlem. Two neat horizontal creases, presumably as mailed, again, perhaps … [Click Below for Full Description]
