Used with wear and tear. Heinemann 1964. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. This was to Daniel's father during a stay in the hospital. Wilbur told me he didn't like the man. (This was in the context of buying the book from me due to its personal association inscription). I'm sure this was a joke as we sometimes make of our in-laws. The Sunbird is Wilbur's favorite book and the emblem features on his personal letterhead and as a logo. I think the story was based on one of his earliest exploration adventures, something he did between writing books. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Wilbur will be releasing his memoirs this Spring so now it the time to invest again. From early 2000's until 2011 we were the world's largest dealer of Wilbur's early and signed books. It was our privilege to meet him privately, including at his home, to have him verify signed books and to line-sign books for me only (Niso would not allow the practice for long). He was concerned about the integrity of those dealers selling his signed books and it was a great honor to become friends with him for a time. Him and Niso also bought rarer copies as well as other memorabilia from me like film scripts. After the rarest titles, like this one, were sold into collections, I moved onward in my book dealing focus. One of the secrets of the trade I can share with you … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peter FORAKIS
New York: Tibor de Nagy Editions, 1964. Condition: Very good. 4to. Stapled pictorial wraps. Some faint soil to front wrapper. Mild toning overall. Very good. One of 500 unnumbered copies. A scarce and important publication which apparently ran just one issue. Forakis, Yampolsky, and Fleming (all artist's better known for other mediums) each contribute one work or "story" utilizing the conventions of the comic (panels, word balloons, etc.), but all non-narrative and veering towards the completely abstract, psychedelic and/or nonsensical. The motifs and styles clearly prefigure the work of later underground comic artists, and this is easily among the earliest we've seen to exhibit a non-commercial, "underground" aesthetic (albeit mixed with a fine art influence). Indeed, this publication predates by at least several months what is generally considered the first underground comic: Jack Jackson's GOD NOSE (which though printed the same year was clearly published sometime after January). And though the three pieces in GROPE don't quite demonstrate the over-the-top subversive quality one typically associates with the underground, all three clearly exhibit a prescient style that would soon come to fuller fruition in R. Crumb and others. Curiously, published by Tibor de Nagy, who had previously done nothing quite like this. OCLC shows just 12 holdings. [Attributes: First Edition]

Paustovsky, Konstantin.

Original Hardcover with beautifully illustrated dustjackets in excellent condition. This is an unusually beautiful set in Fine condition. Three minor stains to rear dustjacket of volume I. Konstantin Georgiyevich Paustovsky (31 May [O.S. 19 May] 1892 - July 14, 1968) was a Russian Soviet writer nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature in 1965. Paustovsky began writing while still in Gymnasium. His first works were imitative poetry. He eventually limited his writing to prose, after Ivan Bunin who wrote in a letter, „I think that your sphere, your real poetry, is prose. It is here, if you are determined enough, that I am sure you can achieve something significant." His first stories to be published were "Na vode" ("On The Water") and "Chetvero" ("The Four") in 1911 and 1912. During World War I, Paustovsky wrote some sketches of life at the front, and one of them was also published. His first book, Morskiye Nabroski ("Sea Sketches"), was published in 1925, but was little noticed. It was followed by Minetoza in 1927, and the romantic novel Blistaiushie Oblaka ("Shining Clouds") in 1929. His work of this period was influenced by Alexander Grin as well as the writers of the „Odessa school", (Isaac Babel, Valentin Kataev, and Yuri Olesha). In the 1930s Paustovsky visited various constructions sites and wrote in praise of the industrial transformation of the country. To that period belong the novels Kara-Bugaz (1932) and Kolkhida (1934). … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beard, James; Illustrated by Earl Thollander
Atheneum, New York, 1964. First edition of this collection of writings from James Beard. Octavo, original half cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by James Beard with a full page inscription. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing to the extremities. Jacket design by Earl Thollander. In this culinary journey, James Beard takes us back to the earliest days of his childhood when he started developing his precocious palate and lifelong "taste memories"--the ability to savor and remember the tastes and sensations of food. His enthusiasm for flavors, no matter how bold, would define Beard for the rest of his life. From devouring a raw onion as an infant to scouring the globe in search of local flavors as an adult, Delights and Prejudices is full of witty and illuminating stories that open a door into the world of one of America's first and perhaps greatest epicures. Packed with more than one hundred fifty recipes, including corn chili souffle, fried oysters, and peach preserves, this very personal account of his life is as close to an autobiography as Beard ever penned. New York: Museum Books, 1964. Condition: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. 4to - over 9" to 12" tall Signed by Author(s). Hermann Zapf (1918-2015) was one of the most influential typographers of the early digital age, having a career that "spanned the glory days of hot metal composition right through to the rise of the Apple Mac"; his creations continue to inspire today. Interestingly it's Zapf's Dingbats that may have had the biggest impact on modern communication, as these formed the basis for Unicode's symbols, which in turn paved the way for the now-ubiquitous emoji. This book presents 78 specimen pages of Zapf's typography, mostly of title-pages, but also included are some text pages and even a self-cover for a catalogue. A lovely display of the incredible talent of a gifted type designer. DESCRIPTION: Bound in half green laid paper over a vellum shelfback with vellum tips, gilt lettering on the spine, title page in red, blue and black, Preface in English, German and French, specimens are both bound and tipped in, most are in black but several are in various ink colours, at the end is a listing of each specimen and its typographical details; large quarto in size (approximately 12" tall), text unpaginated. There were three published versions, the German, French and American editions, the American edition was limited to 500 copies of which this is no. 448, signed by Herman Zapf. Used with wear and tear. Viking Press 1964. Technically the Viking edition was published before the UK edition making it the first, but thereafter UK editions are the true firsts. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. One of the secrets of the trade I can share with you is that neither authors or publishers kept the old records of what was published how, when or why. No one thought to keep the written records of contemporary books and most information has been carried word of mouth, embellished on the way or frankly just made up. (that has certainly changed now). Certain information persist over the ye … [Click Below for Full Description]
