Grigoris Lambrakis
1964. 4to (11 ¼ x 11 in.) in wraps. Very Good condition. Item #4094 Grigoris Lambrakis (b. 1912 - d. 1963) was a public figure in post-civil war Greece whose assassination sparked massive demonstrations against the right-wing government. He was a record-holding professional athlete in track and field, he actively participated in the Greek Resistance during the German occupation, and after World War II he became a well-respected doctor. He was very politically active in the pacifist movement and eventually was elected as a member of the Greek parliament in 1961. In 1963, the police arrested organizers of The First Pacifist Rally from Marathon to Athens and the event was banned. Committed to the cause and taking advantage of his diplomatic immunity, Lambrakis marched alone with a banner until he was also arrested. The following month, two right-wing extremists attacked Lambrakis, clubbing him in the head. He died five days later in the hospital on May 27, 1963.In 1964, the 2nd Marathon Peace March commemorated Lambrakis' death and drew a massive crowd to walk the forty-two kilometers between Marathon and Athens. Participants included Ava Helen Pauling (wife of Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling) representing Women Strike for Peace, Isabella Blum (Belgian public figure) representing the World Peace Council, Gopinath Pillai (Indian public figure), Harold Hamilton representing the British newspaper Peace News, Pat Pottle and other representatives from the Committee of 100 (a British anti-war group). This publication commemorates the peace march and proposes a third peace march wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Time, Inc) [Donovan, Hedley]
Time, Inc.], 1964. Hedley Donovan's own copy of Time's compilation of the remarks made by various individuals on the celebration of his appointment as editor-in-chief of all Time Inc. Publications. Illustrated with photographs and photo-montage endpapers. 1 vols. 8vo. His Own Copy. Original red glazed calf, gilt rule on upper cover, "Hedley Donovan" stamped in gilt at lower right corner; fine. Provenance: Estate oif Hedley Donovan. On April 16, 1964, the Time, Inc. Board of Directors, "acting on the suggestion of Henry R. Luce" named Hedley Donovan to its top position, editor-in-chief. Luce, Time co-founder and for 20 years editor-in-chief, was appointed editorial chairman, and at the New York Hilton on May 25 a dinner was held to honor the two men at which Luce, Donvan, and other Time Inc. executives spoke. This is a beautifully produced record of their remarks, including these by Donovan: "This [piece] appeared in the newspaper of Jefferson High School in Minneapolis, a publication that I'm afraid some of you don't follow as closely as you might: 'Hedley Donovan was selected home room reporter by his class for the Jeffersonian the first year that Mr. McRae sponsored it. Because of his fine contribution the first semester he was selected as assistant editor the second semester. Just recently Mr. Donovan was named Editor-in-Chief of Time-Life corporation'. End of item". (The headline of the article was "Reporter Steps Up"). The most desirable copy of a splendid icon of American journalism.

[Rand, Ayn] Hazlitt, Henry
Princeton: Van Nostrand, 1964. First edition. Publisher's cloth binding with black spine and yellow boards. Some rubbing to front and rear boards with edges slightly toned, else a bright and fresh copy overall. In its unclipped black and yellow jacket. Spine sunned and panels rubbed and toned; remnant of removed adhesive tag to front cover; chips and small closed tear to bottom of rear panel; paper loss to crown of spine. Provenance: the private library of Ayn Rand. The present copy contains Rand's marginalia and underlining. Hazlitt's Foundations of Morality "probes deeply into the ultimate basis of both private and public ethics. Morality, he finds, is essential to the very existence of human society. So far from there being any fundamental antagonism between the long-run interests of the individual and those of society, these interests coincide. The social cooperation that best serves the interests of the whole society is at the same time the great means by which each individual serves his own long-run interests." In their ethical, political, and economic views, Hazlitt and Rand largely align. "Ayn Rand and Henry Hazlitt made the same point in different ways" (Tamny). Indeed, the two authors, who were also friends in their personal lives, influenced each others views even prior to Rand's composing The Fountainhead (Burns). In the present copy, Rand uses blue ink to score important sections in chapters including Intuition & Common Sense, Vocation & Circumstance, and Free Will & Determinism. By the time of Hazlitt's book release, Rand had become a major cultural force; and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scrapbook of memorabilia and photographs documenting the African safari-themed Winchester Rifle exhibit at 1964's N.R.A. convention in Los Angeles. Other photos show the toothy Winchester representative brandishing a rifle at a cluster of boy scouts. The Winchester tent was reported by contemporary media (as represented in the album) as the '64 convention's most popular attraction. Winchester used the occasion of the convention to promote "Safari," its made-for-TV film starring Ommanney, Winchester's "Man in Africa." A press release notes that Omanney was also slated to appear on the "True Adventure" program while there in Los Angeles, to "explain the role of 'white hunter" and to "give vicarious 'white hunters' many inside tips on the dangerous profession." 1964. Smith, Marie; Truman, Harry [Foreword[The President's Lady: an Intimate Biography of Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson [SIGNED BY LADY BIRD JOHNSON -- PROVENANCE CONGRESSMAN HORACE KORNEGAY] New York: Random House, 1964. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (some pushing and darkening to the spine ends, Horace Kornegay's bookplate to the front pastedown -- yellow topstain remains quite nice in color), in a Very Good + dust jacket (spine lightly sunned, some minor general rubbing and a few - mostly rather small - chips), SIGNED BY LADY BIRD JOHNSON on the front free endpaper as follows: "with best wishes, / Lady Bird Johnson". Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson was America's thirty-second first lady (and wife of Lyndon B. Johnson, the nation's thirty-sixth President). Formerly the Second Lady of the United States, she became the nation's First Lady upon the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. (It was Mrs. Johnson's business acumen that brought wealth to her family.) Considered a factually fuller and less fawning biography than the earlier biography of Mrs. Johnson authored by Ruth Montgomery. In commenting on this biography, the New York times described Lady Bird Johnson as being "what many women wish they could be". AN ASSOCIATION COPY having an EXCELLENT PROVENANCE, this copy belonged to US CONGRESSMAN HORACE KORNEGAY (who served during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations) whose bookplate graces the front pastedown. BERRIGAN, Ted
Lorenz & Ellen Gude, 1964. First edition. Wraps. Side-stapled 4to. mimeo. Cover by Joe Brainard; offset duplicated. Very good with the usual toning, mild edgewear. Some scuffing to covers. Soil here and there. Final leaf loose at two staples, but holding. Lacking rear cover and terminal blank (as in many copies and given specific provenance of this item - see below - we suspect many were issued this way). [66] leaves mimeographed rectos only. PROVENANCE: Izzy Young's copy, with his contemporary ownership inscription to last page: "Israel G. Young, December 1964, from Ed Sanders." Young was a central figure throughout the 1960s NYC music and literary scenes. He founded the Folklore Center, produced Dylan's first concert in 1961 (Dylan even wrote a song for/about him, "Talking Folklore Center"), and was close to Sanders, helping to print several titles from from his Fuck You Press on the mimeo machine at the Center. Very Good. Edited by Ron Padgett (who also typed the stencils), this remains the definitive statement of the Second Generation of the New York School as well as Berrigan's most influential, popular, and lasting work - a measure of which can be seen in the fact that it is the only major American collection of the last fifty years to go through four sepa- rate editions, each at different publishers. From an edition of "300 plus an unspecified number of unnumbered copies" (Fischer p. 24), this is from the unnumbered series, estimated (by Berrigan himself; again see Fischer) to be about 100. [Kennedy, John F.] [Frank Sinatra Association Copy]
Washington DC: United States Government Printing Office, 1964. Limited Edition. Full leather. Fine. Octavo, [in three volumes], L, [2], 908pp; LIV, [2], 1019p; XLIV, [2], 1007pp. Black polished calf, title in gilt on spine, raised bands, decorative gilt inlay on covers. "Frank Sinatra" in gilt on front panel of each volume. Faint rubbing at extremities. Bound in leather by California Bookbinding, with associated tag on front endpaper. From the personal library of Frank Sinatra, an avid Kennedy supporter and friend of the President. After the assassination of the President in 1963, Nancy Sinatra noted that her dad cried for days. It may be the reason he chose this black leather copy of the presidential papers. Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) was an actor, singer, producer and political supporter. He is considered by many to be the "greatest singer of the 20th Century." In 2018, Sotheby's auctioned off part of the estate of Frank Sinatra's wife, Barbara Sinatra. This collection included numerous pieces from their homes in Los Angeles, Malibu and Palm Springs. This book came from the personal collection of the family.

This complete script has all of the studio issued pages inside and it is 188 pages long. It has the original Twentieth Century Fox production cover. The cover has some small tears around the edges. Please view all of the pictures above carefully. This original script is in very good overall condition. -Storyline- Engineer Jake Holman arrives aboard the gunboat U.S.S. San Pablo, assigned to patrol a tributary of the Yangtze in the middle of exploited and revolution-torn 1926 China. His iconoclasm and cynical nature soon clash with the "rice-bowl" system which runs the ship and the uneasy symbiosis between Chinese and foreigner on the river. Hostility towards the gunboat's presence reaches a climax when the boat must crash through a river-boom and rescue missionaries upriver at China Light Mission. Mark Shaw, 1964. Original vintage double-weight black and white photograph. Paper size 14" x 11" with an image area of approximately 10.5" square. Mild handling wear. Small stain to upper left of image. Layout mark to margin. With photographer's stamp, dated 1964, to verso. Very good. Very good. A wonderfully candid image of Jackie Kennedy and son, John Jr., on vacation in Palm Beach, FL -- the trip on which she announced her pregnancy with their third child, who died just after birth. Printed by the photographer, Mark Shaw, in 1964. Shaw extensively photo- graphed the Kennedys and was their preferred photographer. He went on to be a close family friend - a fact belied by this image's inti- macy. This photo appeared in Shaw's book THE JOHN F. KENNEDYS, pub- lished shortly after John's death in 1963.
