SOVIET-AFGHAN WAR) ESPOSITO, Vincent J., Brigadier-General (ed.).
New York: Frederick A. Praeger, , 1964. Vol. I: 1689-1900. Vol. II: 1900-1953. Compiled by the Department of Military Art and Engineering, the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Two volumes landscape folio. Original grey buckram-backed, black cloth boards, title in gilt on false black spine labels, and debossed to front boards together with the West Point arms embossed in gilt. Text printed in blue, numerous maps in grey with dispositions in red and blue. A little rubbed, spine panels flaked to the point of illegibility, front endpapers a little soiled, the text-block of the second volume burst at the bottom edge, and the boards split, by the penetration of a stray round, overall in sound "relic" condition. A remarkable copy of this classic work, first published in 1959. Inscribed on the front free endpaper; "To His Royal Highness Prince Brigadier Abdul Wali on the occasion of your visit to The United States Military Academy, D.V. Bennett, Major General, USA, 11 March 1968". The set was presented as a memento to the Sandhurst-trained deputy commander of the Afghan army, also the son-in-law of King Zahir Shah, on his visit to North America in '68-9, and subsequently liberated by a Russian soldier as a souvenir of the "Russian invasion of"/"intervention in" Afghanistan in 1979 with his inscription beneath; "Found on entry to the army headquarters by Chief Lieutenant Breusenko, Kabul, December 1979 [our translation]". An evocative vestige from this endlessly troubled region, emblematising the period often referred to as the Soviet Union's Vietnam War.

Condition: Like New. "Goya: Engravings and Lithographs, Catalogue Raisonne". Tomas Harris; publ. Bruno Cassirer; two volumes; 1964. This is the seminal work on Goya's printmaking published over 50 years ago. This copy was purchased from Foyles bookseller in the late 90's still wrapped in the original plastic. Includes a forward by noted art critic (and infamous British double agent) Anthony Blunt. (Harris himself worked for British MI5 during WWII and most notably worked with the Nazi double agent "Garbo" in the the Normandy Invasion deception of the Germans. It has also been suggested that Tomas may have been a Soviet double agent). These two volumes are in near pristine condition: tiny scuff on mid spine Vol II, some sunning tip of spine Vol I, some slight foxing to inside of jacket and edge of pages vol II (not visible when viewing pages, only when volume is closed). Interior and pages immaculate. As close to "new" as possible. There are few quality copies of this masterpiece on the market and this may be the finest copy available for sale currently. BELLOW, Saul (1915-2005)
New York: Viking Press, 1964. First Edition. First Printing, First Issue, with poorly printed grey initial letters at start of each chapter and no reviews on jacket's back panel. 8vo: [8],341,[1]pp. Publisher's mottled blue cloth, spine stamped in silver, upper board titled in blind, top edge stained blue (lightly faded); illustrated dust jacket priced at $5.75. Signed by Bellow on the front fly leaf (as usual). Laid in is a First Edition Circle bookmark, from Kroch's & Brentano's in Chicago, announcing this copy as a "first edition autographed by the author." About Fine (and probably unread) in about Fine jacket, the spine panel lightly toned. ¶The author's sixth book, winner of the National Book Award. "Herzog is a massive intellectual accomplishment that has repeatedly been likened to Joyce's Ulysses. It remains Bellow's acknowledged masterwork . . . Bellow wrote Herzog while in Puerto Rico, New York, and Chicago dealing with yet another marital catastrophe. At its heart is Bellow's profound shock at learning that his friend, Jack Ludwig, had cuckolded him. The last of their circle to know he had been deceived, Bellow lapsed into deep depression and produced Moses Herzog, an intensely self-justifying hero who, like himself, was tearful, cuckolded, and precipitated into intellectual and spiritual crisis by the failure of his marriage." De Loach, Allen, Editor
New York: Intrepid Press. Complete run of Allen De Loach's small press poetry magzine / newsletter. 41 issues in 22 volumes. Varying softbound formats. Issue #1 co-edited by Will Inman. The magazine was published somewhat erratically starting bravely in 1964 and running through 1980. The editor's statement in the first issue reads as follows: "The purpose of this newsletter is to exist as a microphone for established poets to express views of the relevant nature of living and growing and to allow young poets a similar chance. Its second purpose is to extend the presence of American poets to the mind's eye of people who would not otherwise come in contact with the creative works of the American voice. This is not a competitive newsletter but a supplement to periodicals, such as FUCK YOU, FLOATING BEAR, and YOWL, that are doing an excellent job of blasting dogmatisms. Guts, vision, awareness, compassion. Can we learn the strengths, the depths, the resilience, of our guts by practicing to be intrepid? letting a little vision waken, awareness deepen, compassion sperm us to the quick? Let's try!" All issues in very good or better condition. De Loach's vision was wide-ranging and he included poets from all walks of life: beats, black mountaineers, east coast troublemakers etc. His front cover trademark (which ran beginning with issue #5) was a calligraphic image provided by artist Brion Gysin. Paul Blackburn, Gary Snyder, Diane DiPrima, John Wieners, Ted Berrigan, Tuli Kupferberg, Carl Solomon, Herbert Huncke and Phil Whalen were among the numerous contributors. Two of the issues … [Click Below for Full Description]

La série d'images de cristaux en noir et blanc qu'il intitule Diamantine fait apparaître des formes mystérieuses nées sur une simple plaque de verre de la cristallisation de divers produits chimiques. DDR Deutsche Demokratische Republik). Anton STANKOWSKI (designer).
Senator fŸr Jugend und Sport., Berlin, 1964. Jugend im System is a multimedia collection of classroom materials designed to educate school students in West Germany about the lives of their young peers in the Communist-run East German DDR. The contents are packaged and illustrated throughout with bold 1960s constructivist photomontage designs by Anton Stankowski. Overall it presents a fascinating portrait of the lives of East German school children at the height of the Cold War, shortly after the assassination of John F. Kennedy (most of the included newspapers reference his death). Stankowski's designs for the collection emphasize a sense of ideological control and systemic enmeshment, demonstrating for West German students the extent to which their peers' worldview differed from their own. The introduction is written by Kurt Neubauer, the West German Senator fŸr Jugend and Sport. Until the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 Neubauer lived in the eastern part of Berlin. He was one of the members of the German Bundestag who had a residence in the Soviet sector of the city. The contents of the box are: 1. Original filmstrip "Jugend im System" in custom-made plastic container. Film shows East German youth marching in parades and at Party rallies; 2. Ten original photographs (each 17 x 22.5 cm) showing East German Youth in parades (May 1st, 1961), demonstrations, and at other political events. Includes a printed list of the photographs and their titles; 3. Four 33 rpm vinyl records each in printed sleeves: a) Der Jugendliche in der Schule. b) Der Jugendliche im Betrieb. c) … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRIMES, Michael C.
(San Jose, California): S.A.S.K.E., 1964. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 23, [1] pp. Stapled printed mustard wrappers. Light superficial stain on upper cover, old ink price at bottom corner, a few light pencil check marks in the text (easily erasable), else near fine. A guidebook to hallucinogenic substances, describing 85 plants, mushrooms, and synthetic substances, "a first attempt to bring practical knowledge to the uninformed public of where and how to obtain psychodelics with little or no expense ... ." Dedicated by the author to Richard Alpert, Richard Forrest, and Bernard Copley. The publisher, The Society for the Advancement of Self-Knowledge and Evolution seems to have left no other trace. The printed seal on the last page suggests "magical" origins. According to the author: "My personal opinion is that psychodelic substances should be made available for all who seek to explore the reaches of their own mind and soul, and that laws restricting such activity are instituted primarily out of the fear of our 'unknown' inner selves. ...NO ONE can fail to benefit in some manner from the expansion of perception, sensation, and consciousness which the psychodelics bring about." A rare and early exploration of psychedelic drugs. Not in *OCLC*, and apparently unrecorded.

Washington, D.C., February 7, 1964. On his Supreme Court stationery to which he has added his home address on Massachusetts Avenue. To Ted at the Atlantic Monthly. "On Wednesday Gardner Cox was here and told me that in the Feb. issue of the Atlantic there is to be 'a wonderful article on F.F. by Garson Kanin.' My Feb. copy has come but no Garson Kanin. Was it omitted from my copy to save me from blushing? I hope that Gardner's portrait of you will be half as good as those he painted of Learned Hand and more recently . of me. With cordial regards, Ever yours." As a student, Frankfurter had edited the Harvard Law Review, and after serving in the federal Bureau of Insular Affairs, a division of the War Department, he returned to Harvard as a professor, making a name for himself as a legal scholar. In 1920, he helped found the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He became an advisor to Franklin Roosevelt during both his New York governorship and presidency, and in 1939 FDR appointed him to the Supreme Court. He served until August 1962, when he retired four months after suffering a stroke. In addition to his defense of Sacco and Vanzetti and his liberal court opinions, he is also remembered for the publication Of Law and Men, a collection of essays on such well-known contemporaries as Alfred E. Smith, Alfred North Whitehead, Harold Laski, Lord Lothian, John Dewey, and Thomas Mann. The subject of our letter is a … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York: Fleet Publishing Corporation, (1964.) dj. SIGNED hardcover first edition - SIGNED by the book's subject with his birth name, "Cassius Clay" -- a rare signature and especially so in this rather hard-to-find book, the first published biography of the great heavyweight champion. Issued later in the same year in which Clay took the heavyweight crown away from Sonny Liston (in their February 1964 bout), the book includes an account of the turbulent months that followed -- including the new champ's relationship with Malcolm X and his conversion to Islam, the controversy over his draft status, his much-publicized trip to Africa, and his suspension by the World Boxing Association (in effect as the book ends), which delayed his rematch with Liston until May 1965. Illustrated with 8 pp of photographs. Includes his professional boxing record. 116 pp. Good only in a good dustjacket (bumped at several corners, also bumped and dented at bottom center of front cover - hard enough to have created a short split in the board; jacket is price-clipped and has several ragged tears and associated creasing along the bottom edge of the front panel, along with internal tape repairs.

Kesey, Ken
The Viking Press, New York, 1964. First edition, first issue with the publisher's logo on the half title page of Kesey's second novel. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly inscribed by Ken Kesey on the front free endpaper, who has filled the entire page with a drawing in purple, blue and green. Near fine in a very good price-clipped first issue dust jacket with some rubbing and wear. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. A unique example. "The novel's exquisite prose, which often reads like lyric poetry, draws us into the daily lives of the Stamper family. We've heard Sometimes described as a novel about a family feud. That's like saying War and Peace is about one of Napoleon's shorter-lived military campaigns. Each of the Stampers is a three-dimensional person, and that leads to some fun, some heartache and a great literary catharsis" (Henley, Wikelund & Lindquist, 39). It was adapted to film in 1970 (a.ka. Never Give A Inch) directed by Paul Newman and starring Newman, Henry Fonda, Michael Sarrazin and Lee Remick. The cast also included Richard Jaeckel in an Academy Award-nominated performance. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
