Ross MacDonald
1964. This is an archive of manuscript material from both the book and magazine versions of a key Macdonald novel, THE CHILL (1963-64). Consists of: 1. 83 holograph (handwritten) pages of early draft material for the novel, including several false starts. The working title at this point was "A Mess of Shadows." 2. A 218 page complete manuscript, consisting of 173 pages of heavily corrected carbon typescript with 45 pages of handwritten text interspersed. Also included are a handwritten title page and two pages of notes (one typed, one handwritten) titled "Revisions of The Chill." This is the working manuscript for Macdonald's condensed version of the novel which appeared in Cosmopolitan magazine. The typescript pages are from the original complete typescript and bear numerous deletions and emendations while the interspersed handwritten pages are textual bridges written by Macdonald especially for this version. 3. 108 page carbon typescript - with some handwritten corrections - titled: "The Chill (short version)". The finished retyped version of the above working manuscript. 4. A copy of the issue of Cosmopolitan magazine (Volume 155, Number 2) in which the condensed version of The Chill was published in August 1963. This is an important manuscript by this premier detective novelist, documenting Macdonald's method of composition - here a painstaking distillation of this full-length novel to its essence. See all 12 pictures. In fine quarter morocco, buckram folding case. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Beaton, Cecil (Vivien Leigh)
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1964. First edition of Beaton's Fair Lady, a witty compilation of his personal diary entries recorded while managing the costume and set design of the 1957 Warner Brothers film starring Audrey Hepburn. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated throughout. Association copy, inscribed by the author to actress Vivien Leigh on the front free endpaper, "For Vivien With Blessings from Cecil." Beaton met Vivien Leigh on the set of The Doctor's Dilemma in Edinburgh, Scotland in November of 1941. He was working as a photographer for Vogue magazine at the time and after attending the play took the first of what would become many iconic portraits of Leigh. The two became close friends and Beaton was a regular guest at Notely, the home of Leigh and her second husband, Oliver Stone, which was notorious for its large parties. Throughout the next decade Leigh, Stone, and Beaton worked on a number of films together including Anna Karenina and The School for Scandal. The friendship became strained as Beaton grew increasingly jealous of Leigh's continued success. Cecil sent Leigh this copy of Fair Lady as a peace offering in 1964, they had not spoken in over ten years. The book was found among her personal belongings after her death from tuberculosis three years later, although it is unknown whether or not the friendship was ever repaired. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few closed tears. Jacket design by Cecil Beaton. An exceptional association copy.       One most eminent society portrait photographers, set, and costume designers of the 20th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zurn explains her strange and engaging drawing from 1964 in both French and German: "A memento for the sick confectioner's apprentice...One is dancing on the other's head-that's life." The fantastical image, characteristic of her style, appears on the reverse of a two-page letter written to gallery owner Werner Kunze "on a boring Sunday," telling Kunze that she will be able to draw without interruption in four days. The drawing is the last page of our book, Scrawl: An A to Z of Famous Doodles. Zurn suffered from schizophrenia and ultimately committed suicide. She may have felt, even believed, that someone was dancing on her head, just as she illustrated here.

INSURED MEDIA MAIL SHIPPING IN A BOX SIGNED AUTOGRAPHED INSCRIBED BY HAROLD LLOYD WILLIAM CAHN HAROLD LLOYD'S WORLD OF COMEDY FIRST PRINTING IN DUST JACKET 208 PAGES 200+ PHOTOS DUELL, SLOAN & PEARCE 1964 A COMEDY SURVEY, BASED IN PART ON TALKS WITH THE FAMED COMEDIAN FROM THE FRONT DUST JACKET FLAP: "Harold Lloyd is unique and so is this book about him. A comedic immortal who has returned to the limelight recently with two enormously successful reissues of his own film classics, he has talked at length to William Cahn about the "golden age of comedy" he knows so well. Mack Sennett, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Mabel Normand, W, C, Fields, Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers- all come to life in personal reminiscences and in more than two hundred photographs in this handsome volume. Mr. Lloyd's anecdotes on the comedy of yesterday are supplemented by penetrating comment on today's admired comics- Lucille Ball. Red Skelton, Jack Lemmon, Dick Van Dyke, and others, from those carrying on the great traditions of slapstick to the recent "sick" phenomenon. Mr Cahn, author of many successful books, makes a specialty of working with words and illustrations to portray an era or an individual, thus achieving a new dimension. In Harold Lloyd he has found ideal material." KIRKUS REVIEW Building the cumulative, visual joke is a dying art that enjoyed rude health in the era of silent movies. The recognized master of the technique was Harold Lloyd, whose superb pantomime and refinement of slapstick … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charlie Watts
Charlie Watts Signed Copy Ode to a highflying Bird Original Print 1964 My personal story: In 1975 I went to the Sheraton Boston Hotel in hopes to meet the Rolling Stones who were staying there. I first met Ian Stuart in the lobby and we had a nice conversation and ended up talking about Charlie Watts book ODE TO A HIGHFLYING BIRD. Ian eventually introduced me to Charlie!! After our meet up they said they would send me a copy of the original pressing of the book!!!!! I was thrilled when the book arrived a month and a half later!!!!! Fast forward to 1992 when I caught Charlie at a gig in New York City with his Charlie Parker tribute band. I brought the book with me and was able to meet Charlie again and he autographed it for me. It's hard for me to let this fabulous piece go but I feel it's time to have someone else enjoy this rare book signed by one of our favorite drummers. Book info: My signed copy of CHARLIE WATTS Ode To A HighFlying Bird Extremely rare original 1964 UK first edition 5"x7" 36-page hardback book - a charming and heartfelt tribute to Charlie's hero, legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker, in the form of an illustrated poem. The original cream boards have the title printed on the front with a black and white photograph of the author on the reverse. A facsimile edition was published in 1991, but be assured that this is the real deal - the original seven shillings price label even remains securely fixed inside. A piece of early Stones history and a superb investment item! Book Condition: (see photos) Some slight wear on binding On 5th to last pag … [Click Below for Full Description]

White, William S. [Johnson, Lyndon B
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1964. Fourth Printing. 273pp. Red cloth covers, with gilt title on front and spine. Dust jacket in good condition, with chip on bottom and shelf wear on spine. Inscribed by President Johnson to Senator Yarborough: "To Richard Yarborough / from his admiring friend / Lyndon B. Johnson / Feb 10, 1966." Very good / good. Item #247 Senator Ralph Yarborough served in the Senate from 1957 until 1971. He was a Democratic Senator from Texas, with strong ties to former President Lyndon B. Johnson. He was with President Kennedy in Texas, during his November 1963 visit. He initially refused to ride with Vice President Johnson in the motorcade, forcing President Kennedy to have a "heated exchange" with Johnson, demanding that he get Yarborough in line. Johnson acquiesced, and Yarborough was in the motorcade behind President Kennedy on that fateful day. Yarborough would go on to call that day in Dallas "the most tragic day of my life." In the 1964 senatorial election, he ran against future President George H.W. Bush, prevailing in the election and setting Bush on a path that would eventually lead him to the Presidency. He lost his seat in 1970 Lloyd Bentsen, returning to private life. [Attributes: Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Roald Dahl
United States: Knopf, 1964. First Edition Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Rare Blue Cover Variant. Edition has been authenticated as a first edition and includes all the first edition points of the red linen copy, but with different color boards. The boards are covered in blue paper, not linen, otherwise, the First Edition Points are the same: Blind stamped medallion on the front cover Gilt printing on the spine Mustard yellow endpapers Dark stained top page end Six line colophon in the back Oompa Loompas are referred to as pygmies. The complete bibliography of this book is not known for certain. Although it is possible that the blue variant preceded the red linen Charlie (and would thus be an exceedingly rare true first), it is most likely a very short print run that occurred at the end of the red-covered Charlie print run. The blue cover variant is so rare that many established book dealers are unaware of its existence. However, it has been documented and is recognized as a first edition variant. It is not a book club edition. Does not contain the dust jacket, however this edition is in exceptional condition ( see all pictures ). Pages are white with no markings at all. Corners are stiff and sharp Dahl enthusiasts will want to add this rare edition to their collection. They will not be disappointed!!! Free Shipping. Priority Mail. Selby, Jr., Hubert
The Grove Press, New York, 1964. First edition of Selby's first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "To Glenn With All Best Wishes H. Selby Jr 6/22/91." Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Cover design by Roy Kuhlman. An exceptional example. Hubert Selby's fiercely controversial first novel, Last Exit to Brooklyn, shocked many at the time with its stark view of a Brooklyn waterfront neighborhood in the 1950s, yet won select critical regard for its "authentic power. Despite its bleakness, the book's underlying message of redemption through self-destruction caught on in a United States about to enter the radical 1960s. His prose was all Red Hook, spare, direct, as subtle as a punch in the gut from a heavyweight boxer." Selby, long weakened by years of illness and drug use, nevertheless lived to finally see his novel reach the screen. Directed by Uli Edel and starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, the 1990 film was hailed as an "uncommonly evocative screen adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr.'s teeming novel. an epic of the dispossessed" (New York Times).
