Charlie Chaplin [Harold Wilson]
The Bodley Head, London, 1964. Inscribed to the Prime Minister who granted Charlie Chaplin his knighthood in 1975: in a shaky hand Chaplin has inscribed the dedication page 'To Harold and Mary:- [drawing of the little tramp] Charlie C. This is the best that I can do!' It is perhaps the measure of this great performer that even as he signed this book aged 86 after experiencing several strokes, he still felt the need to apologise for a less than perfect performance. A worldwide icon of cinema through his persona of the 'tramp', Chaplin's political views and personal life made him a controversial figure on both sides of the Atlantic and it was only under the premiership of Harold Wilson in the 1970s that the British establishment felt able to offer him his knighthood although the actor was too ill to stand when he received the honour from the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Three years earlier in a similar spirit he had received an Honorary Academy Award for 'the incalculable effect he has had in making motion pictures the art form of this century'. The book is the first reprint before publication of Chaplin's autobiography, a near fine copy in a near fine jacket which has been price-clipped. A little offsetting to the first free end-paper from a newspaper clipping otherwise an excellent copy with an impeccable provenance as it comes from the private collection of Harold and Mary Wilson which was recently dispersed at auction following the death of Mary Wilson aged 102 in 2016. This book was kept safe in the couple's London flat. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditio … [Click Below for Full Description]
