Ting, Walasse, ed . Sam Francis
Bern: E.W. Kornfeld, 1964. First edition. Hardcover. Very good.First edition, limited; of regular edition of 2,000, this example is marked “EXAMPLAIRE [sic] H.C.”; total edition of 2,100.Large folio in 6’s (16 _” x 11 _”) unbound.Tear to the tail and a patch of loss at the head of the dust-wrapper, as well as some nicks and creases. Some bumps and tiny tears to a few plates, but altogether a very good copy in publisher’s yellow cloth-covered slip-case (which is a bit grubby; the slip-cases were of several colors; the British Museum copy is blue). Marked “EXAMPLAIRE [sic] H.C.” — hors-commerce — and signed and dated by Walasse Ting (in blue fountain pen) “22 JUIN 1964 PARIS”. With a few laid-in items: an exhibition catalogue of Ting’s work from 1980, a magazine advertisement (promising 68 lithographs; there were only 62) and an onion-skin typescript listing each individual lithograph’s artist, which is quite handy. With 61 poems written by Ting and original lithographs by: Alan Davie, Alfred Jensen, Sam Francis, Walasse Ting, James Rosenquist, Pierre Alechinsky, Kimber Smith, Alfred Leslie, Antonio Saura, Kiki O.K. [Kogelnik], Asger Jorn, Rovert Indiana, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Karel Appel, Tom Wesselmann, Bram van Velde, Joan Mitchell, Allan Kaprow, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, K.R.H. Sonderborg, Roy Lichtenstein, Oyvind Fahlstrom, Reinhoud [d’Haese], Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, Mel Ramos and Enrico Baj.This portfolio is the definitive document of the transition from Abstract Expressionism into Pop. Chayefsky, Paddy
Presentation copy of the script of Paddy Chayefsky's "The Passion of Josef D" (1964) Bound copy of the script in a brown leather cover with the title, producer's name (Mark Lawrence), and date (February 11, 1964) stamped in gold. Consisting of 90 pages of typescript. (Act 1: 37 pp, Act 2: 33 pp, Act 3, 20 pp). Mark Lawrence was one of the producers of the short-lived play, along with Arthur Cantor and E. E. Folgelson. The play lasted less than two weeks (from 2/11/64 until 2/22/64) on Broadway, and due to the critical reception, Chayefsky vowed to never again write for the stage. He remains the only person to have won three solo Academy Awards for Best Screenplay (for "Marty" in 1955, "The Hospital" in 1971, and "Network" in 1976). The screenplay for "Network" is considered by many to be the best of the 20th century. According to IMDB, Mark Lawrence was a "composer ("Wouldn't You Really Rather Have A Buick?") and producer, educated at Princeton University where he was president of the Triangle Club between 1941 and 1942. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy, then became the vice-president and director of radio and television at the MacManus and John Adams advertising agencies between 1951 and 1961. In 1963 he founded Mark-L Enterprises, and composed the incidental music for the Broadway play "The Owl and the Pussycat". He also co-produced "The Passion of Joseph D". Joining ASCAP in 1961, his other instrumental compositions include 'Christmas Magic', 'David and Lisa's Love Song' ("The More I See of Lisa"), 'It's Love Just the Same', 'Jilfingle Belfells', … [Click Below for Full Description]

Large Folio. 28 folding sheets of lunar maps (22 of large size 695 x 695 mm, and 6 smaller sheets, double-page and printed in red and black), separate volume of 38 pages explanatory text ("Erläuterungen zum Fauth'schen Mondatlas"). Original papercard folding box with publisher's pictorial label on front cover, an inserted pocket for the text volume, and the original ties present. Generally very clean and bright with only very minor soiling and wear. ---- FIRST EDITION OF FAUTH'S MAGNUM OPUS, PUBLISHED POSTUMOUSLY BY HIS SON, HERMANN. One of the most renowned and meticulous lunar observers of the time, Fauth was the last great lunar cartographer to rely principally on visual observations. "The depth of understanding of the nature of lunar topography demonstrated by Fauth was superior to that possessed by the majority of his contemporaries. The morphology revealed by his methodical measurements of the depth-to-diameter ratios of hundreds of lunar craters and the slopes of their exterior and interior walls led him to reject the prevailing volcanic theories of the origin of lunar craters." (Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers I, p. 360). Based on observations from 1911 until his death in 1941 using his 15 1/2 inch refractor first at Landstuhl in the Rhineland and later in Bavaria, his great lunar atlas was finally completed and published in 1964 by his son Hermann. "Fauth was a master of careful observation, his drawings of lunar formations were superb, both in their representation and accuracy, and he quickly bec … [Click Below for Full Description]

Used with wear and tear. Heinemann 1964. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. With a tipped in newspaper article as shown. The Wehlburg's were neighbors of the Smiths in Wilbur's youth. He couldn't remember anymore about them other than they ask him to personally inscribe a copy on release of the book. As friends of his parents, not him, it was a somewhat awkward obligation as we all can related. I can say from personal experience Wilbur is a kind man and loyal to his fans and would have appreciated the Wehlburg's request, even as friends of his parents. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Wilbur will be releasing his memoirs this Spring so now it the time to invest again. From early 2000's until 2011 we were the world's largest dealer of Wilbur's early and signed books. It was our privilege to meet him privately, including at his home, to have him verify signed books and to line-sign books for me only (Niso would not allow the practice for long). He was concerned about the integrity of those dealers selling his signed books and it was a great honor to become friends with him for a time. Him and Niso also bought rarer copies as well as other memorabilia from me like film scripts. After the rarest titles, like this one, were sold into collections, I moved onward in my book dealing focus. One of the secrets of the trade I can share wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. This was to Daniel's father during a stay in the hospital. Wilbur told me he didn't like the man. (This was in the context of buying the book from me due to its personal association inscription). I'm sure this was a joke as we sometimes make of our in-laws. The Sunbird is Wilbur's favorite book and the emblem features on his personal letterhead and as a logo. I think the story was based on one of his earliest exploration adventures, something he did between writing books. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Kennedy, John F.]
[Mexico, 1964. 10 x 8 inches, mounted. Very good. In a folio morocco backed cloth box, ribbon tie. Inscribed on the photo: "For Dr. Travell-with deepest appreciation for everything / With affection / Jacqueline Kennedy." Dr. Janet G. Travell (1901-97) was a New York physician and medical researcher. She was appointed the personal physician to President John F. Kennedy in 1961. She graduated from Wellesley College and Cornell University Medical College. She was the first female doctor to be the personal physician to a sitting United States president and retained that post until March 1965. Her specialty was treating muscular pain. Kennedy's injuries from WWII were the beginnings of his back pain problems. She helped him so much in the late 1950s, he chose her as his personal physician while he was in the White House. The photo is accompanied by small typed note on White House stationery signed by Travell which explains that this photo was taken when the Kennedys were in Mexico at the end of June 1962.

These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. These "A" signed Lions are the first Wilbur ever signed at an event and while he was experimenting with his signature style. He dropped the A for speed of signature. A signed Lions are all "reprinted before publication", but still a first edition. 10,000 first were printed then an addtional 4000 before publication when they realised the demand for the US Viking edition was so strong. The first shipment to South Africa were confiscated by custom for being in violation of the strict decency laws of the time. (this novel contains graphically described sex). Wilbur has said this lead to demand for the novel, not his writing generally. A batch of RBP were then sent for the book's release in Salisbury. Wilbur, a then tax inspector, slipped out on his lunch hour for the signing event in which no one came. Rather than have the books returned to the publisher, he signed them all Wilbur A Smith. This was a "stack" of books in which only 7 to our knowledge have come on the market over the years. Wilbur acknowledged these were is earliest signed books intended for the public, not friends etc. I have sold him a copy for his own collection. New York: June 4, 1964. 1 vols. Apx. 10 x 8 inches. Fine. Aldolfo Best-Maugard (1891-1964) was a Mexican painter and author of "An Approach to Creative Design" (1925). He established and promoted a new drawing teaching method, based on popular art elements and on the study of pre-Columbian forms, that was part of the nationalistic environment of that time. The theory stated that with seven primary lines any natural form could be built. He later became an experimental filmmaker in both Mexico and the United States.

The set clean and bright internally. ---- Ashworth, The face of the moon, Linda Hall 40 - "The Ranger missions, designed to photograph selected sites at a continually increasing scale before crashing onto the moon, got off to a shaky start; the first six missions, launched between 1961 and 1964, were all failures. Ranger VII, however, was successful, taking over 4000 pictures before plunging into the Ocean of Storms west of Fra Mauro. Ranger VIII had similar good fortune, photographing the Sabine/Ritter region of the Sea of Tranquility, the future landing site of Apollo 11. The site chosen for Ranger IX was the crater Alphonsus--at the time high on the list for an Apollo landing. The spacecraft was launched on March 21, 1965, and transmitted over 5800 pictures before impact. The last images, interrupted by the crash, show objects as small as a foot in diameter." RARE Uncorrected Proof You Only Live Twice Ian Fleming Jonathan Cape 1964 UK The Blurb You only live twice, once when you are born, and once when you look death in the face. The Book This is a Rare Uncorrected Proof in Proof dust wrapper of the 1st UK hardback edition published by Jonathan Cape in 1964. One of the rarest books to find, any proof copies in jackets are exceedingly scarce. Presented here in custom made quarter leather green clamshell box lined with fleece. Actually issued in 1963, this proof copy is presented in the original wrapper stating 'Proof Only' on the front flap, with a probable publication date. The Proof itself has numerous typos and missing information such as publisher's address, papermaker and binder's credit. Gilbert (A12a) One of only 500 copies, notably scarce in the wrapper. This is a superb example of an almost complete wrapper with just a handful of short tears and creases. Understandably worn along the top edge where it was unsupported by the much small proof paperback. A little browning and rubbing to jacket. The book is pretty much Fine apart from a little thumbing and the associated reading creases to the spine. A wonderful scarce example from the Bond canon. Shows exceedingly well in the removable archival Mylar wrapper. Need more photos? Just ask. We have tons of other Fine books available. Anonymous / Mir Husain Shah (Translator)/ Minorsky (Explained)/ Barthold (Preface)
Faculty of Letters, Kabul University, 1964. University of Kabul, Faculty of Letters. This is the first edition of a very scarce title: Hudud al-'Alam, written in AD 982 for a Prince of Guzganan (located in the North West of modern Afghanistan). It is a geography book with seven maps covering the whole known world and one of the earliest works of Persian prose. It is originally written in Persian, translated into English by Mir Husain Shah, with notes and explanation by V. Minorsky and with a preface by V.V.Barthold. The book is in clean and very good condition with the original paper cover but rebounded in fine leather binding. A facsimile edition of the unique MS, which came to light in Bukhara in the late 19th century, was published in Russia in 1930 by Barthold but it was left to Minorsky to make the data widely accessible by his English translation and his extensive commentary, which analyses the work's position in the early Islamic geographical tradition and identifies and discusses the places mentioned in the light of a wealth of other information. V. Minorsky was a former Professor of Persian in the University of London . The book is in 720 pages, 20 x 27 cm, and contains 78 pages facsimile of the original hand written manuscript and 7 maps.
