Charles Bukowski
Two days before Christmas in 1964 Bukowski typed this letter to John and Louise Webb in New Orleans. Bukowski was still working at the post office and only a few months earlier his only child, daughter Marina, was born. He was living with Marina and her mother, Frances "FrancEyE" Smith in a one-bedroom court apartment in Los Angeles. An interesting part of this letter is Bukowski saying he doesn't remember his poem, "Something For The Touts, The Nuns, The Grocery Clerks And You," and asking the Webbs for a copy if they can spare one. The poem he doesn't remember would be published by the Webbs in the 1965 book, Crucifix in a Deathhand, and later in five other Bukowski poetry collections. It would also appear on no fewer than seven recordings. The only other Bukowski manuscript on eBay right now is a computer printout, and the seller wants $1600 for it(!). This letter is an original typescript direct from the typewriter on Bukowski's kitchen table at 5124 DeLongpre Avenue in Los Angeles. It's 55 years old, and needless to say, one of a kind. Shipping cost includes insurance.

Lotte H. Eisner
Editions Le Terrain Vague, Paris, 1964. A major Association copy: INSCRIBED BY LOTTE EISNER TO KARL FREUND, THE LEGENDARY CINEMATOGRAPHER OF BOTH "METROPOLIS" (1927) AND "DRACULA" (1931). IN ADDITION TO PHOTOGRAPHING THESE 2 HIGH SPOTS OF EARLY CINEMA, FREUND ALSO DIRECTED "THE MUMMY" (1932) AND "MAD LOVE" (1935, STARRING PETER LORRE). THERE'S ALSO A NICE PROVENANCE TO THIS COPY, HAVING BELONGED TO PEPI AND HERBERT LUFT, BOTH CONCENTRATION CAMP SURVIVORS, AND HERBERT AN IMPORTANT FILM PRODUCER AND JOURNALIST, AND ULTIMATELY EXECUTIVE (VICE-PRESIDENT AND TREASURER OF GETTY PICTURES). A very solid copy to boot of the 1964 true 1st edition of Eisner's seminal biography of F.W. Murnau, a towering figure in German Expressionist cinema, best known for directing the films "Nosferatu", "Faust" and "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans". (Only 42 when he died {1888-1931}, Murnau still left an indelible mark on early film-making, which included the final 5 years of his life in Hollywood). This copy is a clean, well-preserved example of a fragile book. Bright and VG+ in its wonderful pictorial wrappers, with light creasing along the spine and the panel edges. A touch of very light wear at the spine ends and a very mild lean (cocking) to the binding. Pepi and Herbert Luft's ownership stamp appears at the foot of about 9 or 10 pages as well. Octavo, a generous sample of crisp black-and-white photos thruout. Text in French, with additional contributions by Robert Plumpe and Robert Herlth. Von Braun, Wernher
Huntsville, Alabama, 1964. 2 pp. 4to. On National Aeronautics and Space Administration, George C. Marshall Space Flight Center letterhead. 2 pp. 4to. Von Braun, director of the Marshall Space Center in Huntsville, replies to a letter from Peter F. Eisner, of the Junior Philatelic Americans, and describes the lead up to the launching of Explorer I, the first U.S. satellite placed in orbit. In part: "Our rocket team here at Huntsville ... had enjoyed considerable success in the development of the Redstone and Jupiter missiles, when the Soviets launched Sputnik I ... that marks the birth of the Space Age ... We at A[rmy]B[allistic]M[issile]A[gency] were pretty far along in development ... we knew that we could place a satellite into orbit simply by adding just one more solid-propellant rocket to our Jupiter C test vehicle. About one month after Sputnik I we were given the go-ahead ... and within 87 days the 30.8-pound Explorer I was boosted by the Jupiter C to the path which it is still traveling around the earth ... Six years later ... the Saturn I placed into orbit 37,700 pounds, dramatically demonstrating this advance in rocketry...." Von Braun would continue to head the team at Marshall, and was the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle that sent the Apollo spacecraft to the moon.

COWARD, Noel
Heinemann, 1964. First edition. Original blue boards, in the dustwrapper. Inscribed by Coward to Vivien Leigh on the front free endpaper: "For Dear Darling, with Amore, Noelie". A fine copy in a very good dustwrapper. An excellent association: Coward was a long-time friend of both Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. He had launched Olivier's career by giving him the part of Victor Prynne in Private Lives in 1930, and later worked with Leigh in South Sea Bubble (1956) and Look After Lulu (1959). The novel Pomp and Circumstance has the same colonial island setting as his play South Sea Bubble. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Webster, Nicholas (director); Glenville Mareth (screenwriter); John Call, Pia Zadora (starring)
Los Angeles: Embassy Pictures, 1964. Vintage one sheet poster for the 1964 film, a variant we have never before encountered. Considered one of the worst films of all time, as well as a legitimate so-bad-it's-good cult classic, which gained renewed notoriety after being shown in Season 3, Episode 21 of "Mystery Science Theater 3000," a unimpeachable highlight of that show's original run. Notable as the first documented appearance of the Mrs. Claus character in a film, and the first film role for actress Pia Zadora, who played one of the Martian children, and whose career never recovered.27 x 40 inches (69 x 102 cm), folded as issued. Very Good plus, with some diagonal creasing to the corners, and minor starting to the folds, but still bright and unfaded.Weldon 1983.

BALLARD J G
London: Gollancz, 1964. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. Publisher's red boards with gilt spine lettering. A near fine (or better) copy (with the letter P in biro at the top right hand corner of the front free end-paper) in like D/W which is NOT price-clipped. The fragile D/W has a short closed tear (almost invisible) at the bottom right hand corner of the front panel adjacent to the inside flap but the D/W has no other wear or pieces missing and this copy is in much nicer collector's condition than normally seen. None of the usual foxing to the D/W. Shows really well. Photographs/scans available upon request.

The major defects are as follows: (1) For some reason 13 of the first 14 volumes have moisture stains on the cloth of the rear boards only and usually these stains are confined to the very bottom, except for Volume 14, where the moisture staining covers almost all of the exterior rear board. None of this affects the texts. (2) Volume 14 must have been exposed to some severe moisture at some time or other. In addition to the rear board moisture stain, almost all of this rear board is warped, as are the pages of the text block. Again, none of this affects or obscures the texts themselves, the pages of the text block are clean and strongly bound. (3) The cloth that covers both boards on Volume 22 also has this moisture stain and the cloth itself is rippled -- from top to bottom along the right edge of the front board and in the upper left corner of the rear board. (4) The front and rear boards on Volumes 2 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Soviet film.) (Eisenstein.) ALEKSANDROV (Grigori, et al.)
various - 1979, 1964. most volumes illustrated, some colour-printed, various sizes and formats (see above), good condition overall. Norman Swallow (1921-2000) went up to Keble College, Oxford at the end of the 1930s; war service interrupted his progress, but an opportunity at the BBC came up at the right time and he quickly developed a reputation; following a stint on Panorama he transferred to Granada, where, in 1967, he marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution with the documentary 'Ten Days that Shook the World' – on this he collaborated with Grigori Aleksandrov, one of the most important film-makers of the Soviet era, and the co-director of Sergei Eisenstein's 'Oktober: Ten Days that Shook the World'. Aleksandrov was also involved with the two-part documentary on Eisenstein, written and produced by Swallow for the BBC's Omnibus programme in 1970. The books in this collection are mostly (in one instance, the inscription is by the equally-eminent Sergei Yutkevich) inscribed by Aleksandrov to Swallow, in each case either wishing success for or offering warm remembrance of the fruits of their collaboration, mentioning the respective films and paying continued tribute to Aleksandrov's mentor Eisenstein.

Warren Commission
Washington, D.C: Government Printing Office, 1964. See item description. Complete 26-volume set of books titled, INVESTIGATION OF THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY. HEARINGS BEFORE THE PRESIDENT'S COMMISSION ON THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY, all published in November, 1964, by the Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C.; plus the REPORT that was published two months earlier. The books are in good condition and they do not appear to be ex-library. The text blocks are strongly bound and the pages are clean. The entire set, including the REPORT, measures about 37-38 inches across and the purchase price includes the cost of insured USPS Media shipping.
