J.G. Ballard
London: Gollancz, 1964. Book is in good overall condition in a very good unclipped dust jacket. Up for sale is J.G. Ballard's scarce short story collection The Terminal Beach, published in 1964 by Victor Gollancz LTD, London. This is the first edition, first printing with 1964 title page and copyright date of 1964 with no additional printings. The jacket is the first state with 18/- net price to lower front flap and X27 to rear jacket lower right corner. The jacket is unclipped and comes in protective mylar to help preserve the condition. The jacket is very good for notorious cheap paper and has sharp color. No rips or tears or any paper loss. Some toning to the spine of the jacket. The boards and binding are both good, some soiling to the boards and specifically the spine which is a touch faded. The front board has a former book sellers stamp and sticker. Internally the book is good with no writings, markings, remainders or library stamps. Light soiling to the pages and page edges. I will package and ship with great care and work amicably with you to resolve any issue. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

[JOHNSON, Lyndon B.] MAGUIRE, Jack
Austin: The Alcalde Press, (1964). First Edition. Hardcover. Corners with gold-plated protectors added. Rubbing of leather at the head of the spine. Very Good or better and quite scarce in this presentation binding. One of a very small but unknown number of copies bound in full red leather with a gilt decoration of a saddle on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine. Illustrated with drawings by Mac Tatchell and photographs; 80 pages. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the President on the title page: "To Dorothy Nichols/with love--/Lyndon B. Johnson." Dorothy Nichols was a personal secretary and assistant to Johnson from the time he was a freshman congressman until the end of his presidency. She was the first female assistant Johnson hired. They were so close that Johnson gave her away at her wedding and included her in his will. Books genuinely signed by LBJ are quite scarce, and most of those are copies of THE VANTAGE POINT, usually signed on a bookplate and sometimes on a tipped-in page as issued by The First Edition Circle. Association copies, such as this, are extremely difficult to come by. We have not seen another association copy of this leatherbound title except for this very copy which we sold back in 2001 and acquired again a few years ago.

The numbers of the plates aren't sequential and the matching numbers on the plates don't always match the list. This may be due to my misreading of the plate numbers, or original production issues which made for a smaller number of sets issued. The two portfolios match similar sets in institutional collections, so I don't think there are additional plates produced for other sets. . New York: Museum Books, 1964. Condition: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. 4to - over 9" to 12" tall Signed by Author(s). Hermann Zapf (1918-2015) was one of the most influential typographers of the early digital age, having a career that "spanned the glory days of hot metal composition right through to the rise of the Apple Mac"; his creations continue to inspire today. Interestingly it's Zapf's Dingbats that may have had the biggest impact on modern communication, as these formed the basis for Unicode's symbols, which in turn paved the way for the now-ubiquitous emoji. This book presents 78 specimen pages of Zapf's typography, mostly of title-pages, but also included are some text pages and even a self-cover for a catalogue. A lovely display of the incredible talent of a gifted type designer. DESCRIPTION: Bound in half green laid paper over a vellum shelfback with vellum tips, gilt lettering on the spine, title page in red, blue and black, Preface in English, German and French, specimens are both bound and tipped in, most are in black but several are in various ink colours, at the end is a listing of each specimen and its typographical details; large quarto in size (approximately 12" tall), text unpaginated. There were three published versions, the German, French and American editions, the American edition was limited to 500 copies of which this is no. 448, signed by Herman Zapf. "You only live twice: Once when you are born, And once when you look death in the face."FLEMING, Ian. You Only Live Twice. London: Jonathan Cape, 1964.8vo. Original cloth; Japanese figures lettered to upper cover in gold; lettered in silver to spine; pp. 256; a fine copy in a near fine dust-jacket, with just the slightest darkening to spine and rubbing to foot.First edition, first issue. The last of the Bond novels to be published in Fleming's lifetime, and the concluding chapter in the subsequently named 'Blofeld Trilogy'.On 17 July 1963, Michael Howard of Jonathan Cape had written to Chopping about the artwork, saying: "I have had a talk with Ian about the ideas for the ingredients of this design. He is very much in favour of the toad ... but with a suitable array of oriental embellishrangment, i.e. toad plus Japanese flower arrangements, which he thinks should be sitting in a suitable piece of Japanese pottery, perhaps ornamented with a dragon motif. If you could manage a pink dragonfly sitting on the flowers, and perhaps just one epicanthic eye peering through them he thinks that will be just splendid!"(Daily Mail) Chopping's fee subsequently rose to 300 guineas for the jacket design.
