FORAKIS, Peter (Editor); Phyllis Yampolsky and Dean Flemming
Tibor de Nagy Editions, 1964. First Edition. Wraps. 4to. Stapled pictorial wraps. Some faint soil to front wrapper. Mild toning overall. Very good. One of 500 unnumbered copies. Very good. A scarce and important publication which apparently ran just one issue. Forakis, Yampolsky, and Fleming (all artist's better known for other mediums) each contribute one work or "story" utilizing the conventions of the comic (panels, word balloons, etc.), but all non-narrative and veering towards the completely abstract, psychedelic and/or nonsensical. The motifs and styles clearly prefigure the work of later underground comic artists, and this is easily among the earliest we've seen to exhibit a non-commercial, "underground" aesthetic (albeit mixed with a fine art influence). Indeed, this publication predates by at least several months what is generally considered the first underground comic: Jack Jackson's GOD NOSE (which though printed the same year was clearly published sometime after January). And though the three pieces in GROPE don't quite demonstrate the over-the-top subversive quality one typically associates with the underground, all three clearly exhibit a prescient style that would soon come to fuller fruition in R. Crumb and others. Curiously, published by Tibor de Nagy, who had previously done nothing quite like this. OCLC shows just 12 holdings. [Attributes: First Edition]

De Loach, Allen, Editor (William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Allen
Intrepid Press, 1964. First edition. Paperback. Complete run of Allen De Loach's small press poetry magzine / newsletter. 41 issues in 22 volumes. Varying softbound formats. Issue #1 co-edited by Will Inman. The magazine was published somewhat erratically starting bravely in 1964 and running through 1980. The editor's statement in the first issue reads as follows: "The purpose of this newsletter is to exist as a microphone for established poets to express views of the relevant nature of living and growing and to allow young poets a similar chance. Its second purpose is to extend the presence of American poets to the mind's eye of people who would not otherwise come in contact with the creative works of the American voice. This is not a competitive newsletter but a supplement to periodicals, such as FUCK YOU, FLOATING BEAR, and YOWL, that are doing an excellent job of blasting dogmatisms. Guts, vision, awareness, compassion. Can we learn the strengths, the depths, the resilience, of our guts by practicing to be intrepid? letting a little vision waken, awareness deepen, compassion sperm us to the quick? Let's try!" All issues in very good or better condition. De Loach's vision was wide-ranging and he included poets from all walks of life: beats, black mountaineers, east coast troublemakers etc. His front cover trademark (which ran beginning with issue #5) was a calligraphic image provided by artist Brion Gysin. Paul Blackburn, Gary Snyder, Diane DiPrima, John Wieners, Ted Berrigan, Tuli Kupferberg, Carl Solomon, Herbert Huncke and Phil Whalen were among the numerous contribut … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brautigan, Richard
Grove Press, 1964. First edition. Cloth. First edition of the outsider artist, poet and novelist's first novel. Light offsetting to endpapers. The navy cloth covers are lightly worn. A solid very good copy in price-intact dustwrapper. Larry Rivers' artwork graces the front panel. A significant copy of this book. SIGNED AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR ON NOVEMBER 19, 1964 (year of publication). Also, laid in to this copy is an INSCRIBED note from Brautigan to fellow poet Joanne Kyger and her spouse "Happy New Year to: Jack and Joanne from: the Brautigans. They look like this: [beneath the inscription is a humorous small drawing by Brautigan} when dancing." The Kygers were close associates of the Brautigan family back in the 1960's. It is easy to imagine that this was one of the first copies to be signed and dedicated to family and friends in the year of publication. Brautigan's literary reputation has risen and fallen over the years since his suicide in 1984. He variously has been included with the beat generation as well as straddling the zeitgeist of the 60's and 70's counterculture. Very Good / very good. Ernest Hemingway
NY: Scribner's, 1964. Hemingway, Ernest. A MOVABLE FEAST. 4to, editorial typescript consisting of 148 stamp-numbered pages, beginning with the first chapter through the end of the published book. At the top of the first page is a typed label: "Title: A MOVABLE [sic] FEAST / Author: Ernest Hemingway / Pub. Date March (Scribner." The final line is in ink. The "typescript" is on paper watermarked Atlantic Bond 20 and seems to have been reproduced by offset lithography, rather than any of the plain paper xerographic systems available at the time, giving this precedence over any previously described copied or printed galley proofs. Minor typographical and punctuation corrections appear as they were made by hand on the original. The preliminary material, including the title-page epigraph, the author's preface, and Mary Hemingway's note, was apparently not part of this version since the page numbering begins with 00001. At least two different typewriters were used. The whole is contained in a plain buff folder with a penciled note indicating that it was originally sent to an advance reader for the Book-of-the-Month Club. In this case, it was Donald Gallup, who was an acknowledged expert on Hemingway and other personalities mentioned in the book, notably Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, and other American Expatriates in Paris. This item was acquired by us from Gallup and first sold to a private collector in 1987. We are not aware of any other copy being offered for sale since then. Nor does this item appear to be cataloged in the Scribner's Archives at Princeton, The Kennedy … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Fuck You Press]. SANDERS, Ed
Ed Sanders [Fuck You Press], 1964. First Edition. Wraps. 4to. Mimeo wraps. Very good with mild wear and bit of soil to front wrapper. Overall, sharp and sound. [7]pp. (including cover) on as many leaves, printed recto only. Very good. Debut catalogue from Sanders who, as an extension of his editing duties and running of his Peace Eye bookshop, also dealt in "manuscripts, holographs, literary relics, tape recordings, drawings, books, magazines, broadsides, tractata, ejaculate, drek, & other effluvia of the literary divinity" (cover). Essentially, a mimeo rare book catalog with signed items, letters, and other literary rarities, all pitched with the usual Sander's aplomb. Given the particularly ephemeral nature of Sander's catalog(ue)s, they are quite scarce. [FUG YOU 86-7]. [Clay and Phillips pp. 166-68]. [Attributes: First Edition]
