        Report of the Warren Commission

1964. First Edition . Signed. (KENNEDY ASSASSINATION) (FORD, Gerald R.). Report of the Warren Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy. New York, London and Toronto: McGraw-Hill, (1964). Octavo, original half blue cloth, original dust jacket. $2500.Special ""New York Times Edition,"" issued same year as the first, of the official—yet perpetually controversial—report on the assassination of President Kennedy, boldly signed and dated ""1/9/97"" by Warren Commission member (and future president) Gerald R. Ford, in scarce dust jacket. On November 29, 1963, President Lyndon B. Johnson created a Commission ""to ascertain, evaluate and report upon the facts relating to the assassination of the late President John F. Kennedy and the subsequent violent death of the man charged with the assassination."" From February through September of 1964 the seven members of the President's commission (called the Warren Commission after its Chairman, Chief Justice Earl Warren) heard the testimony of hundreds of witnesses and experts and reviewed thousands of exhibits. All subsequent investigations of the Kennedy Assassination have sought either to bolster or debunk the Warren Commission's ""lone gunman"" conclusion. Then-Representative (and future president) Gerald R. Ford's seat on the panel put the Michigan Congressman in the national spotlight. With 32 pages of black-and-white photogravures, including exhibits from the Commission and such indelible images as Oswald's assassination and Johnson's oath-taking aboard Air Force One. First published by the Government Printing Office in 1964. This edition includes special material from the New York Times' coverage of the events. Light edge-wear, tiny bit of tape reinforcement to verso of price-clipped dust jacket. A scarce near-fine inscribed copy.

H.R. 7152 IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES...AN ACT TO ENFORCE THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO VOTE, TO CONFER JURISDICTION UPON THE DISTRICT COURTS OF THE UNITED STATES TO PROVIDE INJUNCTIVE RELIEF AGAINST DISCRIMINATION IN PUBLIC ACCOMMODATIONS, TO AUTHORIZE THE ATTORNEY GENERAL TO INSTITUTE SUITS TO PROTECT CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS IN PUBLIC FACILITIES AND PUBLIC EDUCATION...AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

[Washington.], 1964. 55,[1]pp. Self wrappers, stapled. Minor foxing, a few small edge tears. Very good. A rare slip bill printing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a version circulated to the Senate more than four months before the final text of the Act was signed into law on July 2, 1964. This draft of the Act holds numerous textual differences with the final version, as the wording of the law was continually revised following extended Congressional debate. The text here addresses important topics related to voting, including poll taxes and literacy tests, seeks to outlaw discrimination in public accommodations, such as "any inn, hotel, motel...any restaurant, cafeteria, lunch room, lunch counter, soda fountain...any motion picture house, theater, concert hall, sports arena, stadium or other place of exhibition or entertainment...on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin." The Act also sought to extend the Civil Rights Commission, curtail discrimination in federally-assisted programs, and to establish the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The Civil Rights Act met heavy opposition when it opened for debate in the Senate on March 30. A Southern bloc of Senators enacted a filibustering campaign that lasted fifty-four days, after which a weaker substitute version of the bill was proposed by several Senators. Supporters of the Act gathered enough votes to end the Senate filibuster, the first time in American history that the Senate was able to do so on a civil rights bill. Overall, the Act passed both the House and Senate by about 70% to 30%. The impact of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was monumental when it was passed, it influenced subsequent and similar legislation in the decades to follow, and it is still influential today. Slip bills rarely survive the grind of the United States Congress, much less so when the legislation is as momentous as this. Only three copies are located in OCLC, at St. Ambrose University, the University of South Carolina Law Library, and the Union Presbyterian Seminary. An important surviving artifact from the Civil Rights movement, worthy of additional scholarly research. OCLC 21491547.

        GOLDFINGER (1964)

United Artists 1964 - Vintage original 41 x 27" (103 x 68 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. Sean Connery, Honor Blackman, Gert Frobe, Shirley Eaton, Harold Sakata, Martin Benson, Lois Maxwell, dir: Guy Hamilton; United Artists. In this classic of the series, James Bond uncovers a plot to harm the Fort Knox gold reserve. As always there were plenty of girls to assist, or get in the way of, agent 007. Plenty of villains, too, and this time it was the notorious gold-obsessed Goldfinger with his army of soldiers. This poster features the famous image of Shirley Eaton, painted in gold, at center. Tri-folded, which is rare, and it has been stored rolled. It is in original used condition. There are pinholes at each of the four corners and tape stains at the top two corners. There are also two stains down each side in the blank white margins. There is a bit of edge wear, prominent at the bottom right corner. The very bottom right corner is torn and creased, but all the paper is present. NEAR FINE

Magnificent Presentation photo by Cecil Beaton signed and dated (The Queen Mother, 1900-2002, Queen of George VI)

1964 - showing her three quarters length in profile, seated on a sofa wearing a bejewelled dress and sash, 8" x 6", in original blue morocco presentation frame by H. H. Plante, with gilt monogram at the head, 12½" x 9", no place, no date, circa Provenance. By descent from the son of the person it was given to who worked at Windsor. Beaton's famous photographs of Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace in 1939 established a new romantic image for the monarchy. He subsequently photographed her five times between 1947 and 1957 and deliberately tried to re-create the spirit of the 1939 image - the be-spangled crinoline dress with lots of diamond jewellery. En voici le détail : Diamonds are forever (17e tirage) ; Dr NO (15e tirage) ; From Russia, with love (16e tirage) ; Moonraker (18e tirage) ; For your eyes only (11e tirage) ; Live and let die (15e tirage). NO (1958) ; From Russia, with love (1957) ; Moonraker (1955) ; For your eyes only (1960) ; Live and let die (1954). SUPERBE ET EXCEPTIONNEL EXEMPLAIRE. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Four Autograph Letters, Signed, and One Autograph Note, Signed]

King's College, Cambridge, 1964. Seven and one-half pages, in ink, on blue aerogramme stationary, with integral mailing addresses and usual postmarks and folds. Opened a little roughly at a few folds, but overall very good. To Gilbert A Harrison, editor of THE NEW REPUBLIC, based in Washington D.C., granting permission for their republication of one of his articles, sending thanks for Italian travel recommendations (and describing his stay), and writing on literary/political matters: "[21Jan. 1955] ... I have touched from time to time on the subject, or rather subjects, mentioned ... recently in the Listener and the New Statesman, and less recently in Two Cheers for Democracy, and I shall be touching on them again in the February number of The Twentieth Century. I'm afraid though that I have not the ... ability to compile a considered statement on the situation over here for American readers ...," and "[3 Feb. 1955] ... The Twentieth Century is the successor of the old and once famous Nineteenth Century, and has lately been acquired by the proprietor of the Observer. I do not expect that my brief 'letter' will interest you, if it does please let me know what fee you suggest. I have spoken to Mr. William Plomer, and he says that if you care to write to him and tell him what is in your mind he will be happy to consider it ... He is bringing out a new volume of satirical ballads shortly--. The censorship book is most amusing and well up to date. The only omission is the recent prosecution of Messrs William Heinemann and William Baxter for the latter's novel The Image and the Search. At the trials the jury disagreed. At the third trial the prosecution offered no evidence (a customary procedure in this country) and publisher and author were acquitted -- I believe there has been no trouble over the book in America. TE Lawrence's The Mint comes out next week. There are 'obscenities' in it, but I doubt it being attacked." Kirkpatrick notes five Forster contributions to THE NEW REPUBLIC.

        You Only Live Twice.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1964. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine in silver, Japanese characters to front board in gilt, wood grain endpapers. With the Richard Chopping designed dust jacket. Housed in a custom black quarter morocco solander box. A few pencilled underlines in the first two chapters, free endpapers slightly browned, a couple of very faint spots to rear panel of jacket; an excellent, bright copy. First edition, first impression, one of two dedication copies, inscribed by Fleming to one of the two dedicatees, Richard Hughes, on the front free endpaper: "To Dikko-san from Fleming-san. With all affection." In 1959, Ian Fleming was given a licence to travel. Fleming had written seven James Bond novels when he was approached by one of his colleagues at The Sunday Times with a plum journalistic assignment: to take a five-week, all-expenses-paid trip to visit the world's most exciting cities. Fleming's trip took in Hong Kong, Macau and Tokyo, then Honolulu, and home via the major U.S. cities. Along the way, he gathered material for his novels and his journalism: his Thrilling Cities tour became a popular newspaper series and a bestselling guidebook, while also furnishing much of the backdrop and research for the five Bond novels and seven short stories that would follow. In Tokyo, Fleming's local guide was Richard "Dikko" Hughes, The Sunday Times's Far East correspondent, an ebullient, hard-drinking Australian ex-boxer and part-time spy for MI6. Hughes recruited a Japanese journalist, Toreo "Tiger" Saito, to join them. Fleming was clear about what he wanted to do. "With only three days in Japan, I decided to be totally ruthless," he wrote. "No politicians, museums, temples, Imperial palaces or tea ceremonies? I wanted to explore Ginza, have the most luxurious Japanese bath, spend an evening with geishas, take a day trip into the country, eat large quantities of raw fish, for which I have a weakness, and ascertain whether saké was truly alcoholic or not." The local guides were repaid when Fleming immortalised them both, little disguised, in You Only Live Twice. Hughes became the model for Richard Lovelace "Dikko" Henderson, the Australian spy stationed in Japan; Saito, a "chunky, reserved man who looked like a fighter", would become the fictional Tiger Tanaka, head of the Japanese secret service. The book is jointly dedicated: "To Richard Hughes and Torao Saito But for whom etc. ?" Hughes features prominently in chapter 4, "Dikko on the Ginza": "The huge right fist crashed into the left palm with the noise of a ·45 pistol shot. The great square face of the Australian turned almost purple and the veins stood out on the grizzled temples?" Later, Hughes's character is described as looking "like a middle-aged prize fighter who had retired and taken to the bottle". On page 53, Fleming describes how, "that evening they had gone for more serious drinking to Henderson's favourite bar, Melody's, off the Ginza, where everybody called Henderson 'Dikko' or 'Dikko-san'." Hughes was also the model for Bill Craw in John le Carre's The Honourable Schoolboy.

ORIGINAL January 27, 1965 Invitation to the Nobel Peace Prize Dinner at the Dinkler Plaza Hotel in Atlanta (Honoring Dr. King for his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize)

Nobel Peace Prize Dinner, Atlanta, GA 1964 - 5 1/4 X 4 1/8 Inches (folded dimensions). Single sheet, folded. Scarce original January 27, 1965 engraved invitation to attend the dinner in Atlanta honoring Martin Luther King Jr., the 1964 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. "You are cordially invited to attend a dinner honoring the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize Winner - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - an Atlanta Citizen on Wednesday, January 27, 1965 - Seven o'clock in the evening at the Dinkler Plaza Hotel - Atlanta, Georgia" The invitation contains the rather lengthy list of sponsors, including Rabbi Jacob M. Rothschild, Jessie Hill Jr., Ralph McGill and Senator Leroy Johnson. Return R.S.V.P. instructions at top. A rare memento of one of the shining moments in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's in America. The Nobel Peace Prize and the handling of Dr. King's honors in the city of Atlanta brought out the best and worst in the city. The surprising award to Dr. King had a polarizing effect on his opposition. The Civil Rights movement in America was now center-stage of a global theater. Rumors of KKK protests and violence surrounded the night, although not much happened in the end. A few spots, else fine.

        Dames et Généraux

Schwarz - Berggruen, 1964. Prima edizione di 100+XXV es. numerati e firmati da Baj e Peret (First edition of 100+XXV numbered copies signed by Baj e Peret). 4to (cm 35x26). pp. 28+incisioni. Ottimo (Fine). Baj. 19.63 / Marcel Duchamp'' (Caprile, 1990).

        Asturias

Editions Cercle d'Art, Paris, lithography by Chenot, first edition, 1964 OFFERING: A remarkable specimen of the collaborative work, extra-illustrated by contributing artist, Juan Alcalde with twenty five pages of original drawings artfully worked into printed texts and illustrations. Many of the original drawings are of striking quality and some are done in multimedia with built up color. The contributing poet, Antonio Gavina has handwritten a poem in an incantatory style, first line, "Negro de Espana", signed and embellished with a floral decoration, forty nine lines twining in and around his printed poem onto the facing page. The two pages are superbly extra-illustrated with original drawings by Juan Alcalde, a portrait head of Antonio Gavina and a built up landscape in colors with Antonio Gavina printed in the center. The text, handwritten poem, portrait, and landscape become together a manifestation of the mind of the poet. The expatriate group work, protesting life in Spain under Franco was inspired by the spring 1962 walk-outs and strikes by coal miners in Asturias and is dedicated to their courage. Many of the texts and illustrations refer to the miners in Asturias. PROVENANCE: is documented by the original frontispiece signed Juan Alcalde, done in pen & ink and watercolor, and continuing on the facing title page with Asturias printed in watercolor along the spine. A self-portrait by Juan Alcalde in watercolor and charcoal illustrates the introduction. RARITY: This collaborator's example is one-of-a-kind. A worldwide institution search finds 22 holdings for the general edition including at many of the national libraries in Europe, and at Berkeley, Harvard and MIT in the United States. EDITION NOTE: The complete title is: Asturias: ce livre oeuvre collective d'un groupe d'artistes espagnols peintres, sculpteurs, écrivains, poètes est présenté hors collection par Les Éditions Cercle D'Art. Texts, translated into French are followed by original language texts in Spanish with the exception of a Catalan text. CONDITION: Book: Good. Jacket: Good. Glassine: Good. / Pages: clean and bright; foot of gutter in second half of book with light impress wear. / Wrappers: clean and bright with small crown tear and two foot tears. / Glassine: light foxing, spine soiled; fore-edge with hanging tear, foot with edge chips. / Binding: Reliable, needs to be handled with care; light spine slant and front hinge weakened, two signatures beginning to loosen. PAGINATION: Complete; pages are unnumbered but 97 pages with 44 lithographed reproductions of b/w lithographs made for the book. Artistic contributions include the superb division sheet by Pablo Picasso. FORMAT: Sewn flexible boards, as issued, the cream jacket protected by glassine, the upper side of the jacket printed with artists' names in violet and writers' names in lemon. SIZE: 330 x 282 mm. TEN ADDITIONAL HIGHPOINTS: complement literary contributions by 1) Rafael Alberti, with 2 pages of fine drawings; 2) José Herrera Petere, with a portrait bust, as landscape, facing the portrait head done by Semper, as a landscape; 3) Wenceslao Roces, with a guitar player landscape, finely built up around the Lorente print; 4) Nicolas Sanchez-Albornoz, with a work showing a sign painter painting Asturias, done in counterpoint to the facing Ceballos work of a miner with pickax; 5) Gomendio'tar Joxe Miguel, with a fine portrait of the writer; 6) Maria Teresa Leon, a headpiece complementing Alcalde's own contributory print; 7) José Gomendio, two consecutive, powerful full-page mixed media works in built-up colors; 8) Juan Rejano, a multimedia color portrait facing the fine Alvar lithograph; 9) Manuel Tuñon de Lara, with a multimedia duo portrait and 10) Francisco Ferrer, with a superb political caricature facing a Beti print showing a clawing hand. JUAN ALCALDE: exhibited extensively in France and Venezuela. With the advent of the Spanish Civil War, he went into exile. In 1939 he immigrated to Venezuela from Paris, returning to Paris in 1960. In 1983, he returned to Spain, establishing a studio in Madrid. Dj of lavender and white paint (looks to be original/unique) and large, black lettering. Multiple sky blue end papers. 28 pp. with bw images. Text in French. Catalogue from the exhibition, Mythologies Quotidiennes (Daily Mythologies), held at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, July to October 1964. With an introductory essay by Gassiot-Talabot, the catalogue of 115 works, and advertisements. "The exhibition in July 1964 at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris marks the symbolic beginning of the movement known as Narrative Figuration. Organized by artists Bernard Rancillac and Herve Telemaque and critics Gérald Gassiot-Talabots and Marie-Claude Dane, the exhibition reveals every artist's pure and formalistic "statement." Willingly using the grotesque, humor, and derision, these painters introduce the presentation with successive scenes or by juxtaposition or transformation of images. This movement began when abstraction was declining and comics, film and photography emerged as arts in their own right. Mythologies Quotidiennes features 34 artists who, like their American counterparts, put contemporary society and its images at the heart of their work. But, unlike their American counterparts, their work is more social and political." Artists included are Alleyn, Arnal, Arroyo, Atila, Berni, Bertholo, Bertini, Bettencourt, Beynon, Brusse, Buri, Cremonini, Dado, Fahlstrom, Foldes, Gaitis, Geissler, Gironella, Golub, Gracia, Kalinowski, Klasen, Kramer, Monory, Pistoletto, Rancillac, Faynaud, Raysse, Recalcati, Requighot, Saint-Phalle, Saul, Telemaque, and Voss. A wonderful copy!
