Intrepid Magazine (Complete Run of 41 Issues in 22 Volumes)

New York: Intrepid Press, 1964. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. Complete run of Allen De Loach's small press poetry magzine / newsletter. 41 issues in 22 volumes. Varying softbound formats. Issue #1 co-edited by Will Inman. The magazine was published somewhat erratically starting bravely in 1964 and running through 1980. The editor's statement in the first issue reads as follows: "The purpose of this newsletter is to exist as a microphone for established poets to express views of the relevant nature of living and growing and to allow young poets a similar chance. Its second purpose is to extend the presence of American poets to the mind's eye of people who would not otherwise come in contact with the creative works of the American voice. This is not a competitive newsletter but a supplement to periodicals, such as FUCK YOU, FLOATING BEAR, and YOWL, that are doing an excellent job of blasting dogmatisms. Guts, vision, awareness, compassion. Can we learn the strengths, the depths, the resilience, of our guts by practicing to be intrepid? letting a little vision waken, awareness deepen, compassion sperm us to the quick? Let's try!" All issues in very good or better condition. De Loach's vision was wide-ranging and he included poets from all walks of life: beats, black mountaineers, east coast troublemakers etc. His front cover trademark (which ran beginning with issue #5) was a calligraphic image provided by artist Brion Gysin. Paul Blackburn, Gary Snyder, Diane DiPrima, John Wieners, Ted Berrigan, Tuli Kupferberg, Carl Solomon, Herbert Huncke and Phil Whalen were among the numerous contributors. Two of the issues were stand-alone poetry chapbooks. The final three volumes were published much later than the first 24 and were printed in smaller paperbound formats. The final volume has been inscribed by De Loach.

London: John Calder. Near Fine. 1964. First UK Edition. Scarce. Hardcover. 167pp. A fine copy of this scarce title. "A man called Berg, who changed his name to Greb, came to a seaside town intending to kill his father ..." So begins Ann Quin's first novel. Against the backdrop of this gritty seaside town, an absurd and brutal plot develops involving three characters - Alistair Berg, his father, and their mutual mistress. In his attempt to kill his father, Berg mutilates a ventriloquist's dummy, almost falls victim to his father's mistaken sexual advances, and is relentlessly taunted by a group of tramps. Disturbing and at times startlingly comic, Berg chronicles the interrelations among these three characters as they circle one another in an escalating spiral of violence.

Very rare first and only Dutch edition of Samuel Evers's A journal, kept on a journey from Bassora to Bagdad (1784). Evers was a lieutenant in the East India Company, serving in India. In 1779 he decided to leave the Company and to return to England. Rather than sailing directly to England, he sailed through the Persian Gulf to Basra and continued by boat to Baghdad, then crossed the desert to Aleppo, continuing to Cyprus, Rhodes and through Italy to England. On his return he anonymously published a narrative of the journey. It includes noteworthy descriptions of Baghdad and Aleppo with accounts of their government, inhabitants, caravanserais, etc.The present Dutch translation is augmented with numerous annotations by the translator and a 2-page letter by Vaslin, Dutch consul in Alexandria, on the French admiral and diplomat Laurent Truguet. It further includes the text of two treaties between France and Egypt, both negotiated by Truguet, concerning the free passage of French ships through the Red Sea to Suez and the safeguard of French merchants in Suez.Bookplate on back of half-title and two library stamps on title-page (one embossed).         Public Papers of the Presidents: Harry S. Truman 1948: Containing the Public Messages, Speeches, and Statements of the Presidents; January 1 to December 31, 1948.

Washington, D.C: United States Government Printing Office, 1964. First edition of Truman's papers from 1948. Thick octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by President Truman to his nephew and niece opposite the title page in the year of publication, "To Fred and Audrey Truman from Uncle Harry with very best wishes 11-28-64." In near fine condition. A nice association. After serving as a United States Senator from Missouri (1935-45) and briefly as Vice President (1945), Harry S. Truman succeeded to the presidency on April 12, 1945, upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Germany surrendered on Truman's 61st birthday, just a few weeks after he assumed the presidency, but the war with Imperial Japan raged on and was expected to last at least another year. Truman approved the use of atomic bombs to end the fighting and to spare the millions of American and Japanese lives that would inevitably be lost in the planned invasion of Japan and Japanese-held islands in the Pacific. Although this decision and the numerous issues that arose as a result of it remain the subject of debate to this day, it was one of the principal factors that forced Japan's unconditional surrender. Truman presided over an unexpected surge in economic prosperity as America sought readjustment after long years of depression and war. His presidency was a turning point in foreign affairs, as the United States engaged in an internationalist foreign policy and renounced isolationism. Truman helped found the United Nations in 1945, issued the Truman Doctrine in 1947 to contain Communism, and got the $13 billion Marshall Plan enacted to rebuild Western Europe. His political coalition was based on the white South, labor unions, farmers, ethnic groups, and traditional Democrats across the North. Truman was able to rally these groups of supporters during the 1948 presidential election and win a surprise victory that secured a presidential term in his own right.
