PAN AMERICAN AIRWAYS MAP: PAN AMERICAN AIRWAYS SYSTEM.

Chromolithographed map (Excellent, virtually pristine condition), 82 x 148 cm (32.3 x 58.3 inches). - New York, 1964. A rare large version of the Pan Am Systems map - one of the most iconic airline posters of all time, from the golden age of luxury jet travel. - This large gorgeous poster represents one of the most iconic maps of popular culture. A world map, on a Mercator Projection, it is of a most elegant 1950s design, employing splendid hues of turquoise and emerald (in line with Pan Am’s colours) with relief shown pictorially. Boldly depicting Pan Am to be a truly global force, the globe is traversed by the airline’s routes, in red lines with their respective mileages. Indeed, by 1963, Pan Am served a wide variety of glamorous and exotic destinations, including West Berlin, Istanbul, Tehran, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg, Delhi, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Sydney. Pan American World Airways, popularly known simply as "Pan Am", was perhaps the most iconic airline of the golden age of commercial air travel. Founded in 1927, it quickly grew into the world’s largest airline and pioneered many regularly scheduled long-haul routes and made many record-breaking flights. Introducing the Boeing 707 in the late 1950s, Pan Am came to lead the way in jet travel. From 1960 to 1965, the company’s revenue doubled and billing itself as the "World's Most Experienced Airline", it carried 6.7 million passengers in 1966, and by 1968, its 150 jets flew to 86 countries on 5 continents over a scheduled route network of 81,410 unduplicated miles (131,000 km). During these golden days, Pan Am was exceedingly profitable and maintained cash reserves of over US$1 billion – an astounding sum for the time. In the age of luxury jet travel, Pan Am’s service was considered to be the gold standard. The airline’s extremely well-trained stewardesses were popularly celebrated in and of themselves for their great style and welcoming demeanor. In 1960, the company completed ‘Worldport’, its iconic terminal at New York’s Idlewyld (later JFK) Airport. In 1963, the Pan Am name dominated the view down New York’s Park Avenue, atop the Pam Am Building (now the Met Life Building), the largest commercial real estate space in America. Pan Am was led from its founding to 1968 by its incomparable CEO, Juan Trippe (1899-1981), who combined a daring yet successful business acumen with a flair for great style. Trippe had an unusual appreciation for great marketing and under his watch Pan Am became one of the world’s most recognized brands, synonymous with glamour and modernity. Pan Am’s marketing budget was perhaps the most coveted prize in the global advertising industry. A big part of Pan Am’s PR strategy rested on its promotional material, which was prominently placed in travel agencies around the world. Editions of the present map were one of the most popular and successful posters the company ever created and were immediately recognizable to millions of people. In the age of Mad Men, the company spent millions on ensuring that its image appeared favourably in popular culture. Pan Am planes appeared prominently in the James Bond movies Dr. No and From Russia with Love and in 1964 The Beatles were photographed stepping off of a Pam Am plane, commencing their ‘British Invasion’ of America. Also from 1964 to 1968, the legendary con artist Frank Abignail, Jr. posed as Pan Am pilot, a story that later popularized by the movie Catch Me if You Can (2002). Editions of the present poster map were first issued in 1956, based on cartography by John Philip and design and artwork by Paul John Brown. The poster was produced in two sizes; a manageable size (45.5 x 81 cm) and the present gargantuan format almost twice that size, being 82 x 148 cm. Various updated editions were produced until the late 1960s, with the present edition, issued in 1964, showing updates to routes as of January 1, 1963. They graced innumerable travel agency offices and airport lounges around the world, although posters in excellent condition (such as the present example) are today quite scarce. Referenc

Public Papers of the Presidents: Harry S. Truman 1948: Containing the Public Messages, Speeches, and Statements of the Presidents; January 1 to December 31, 1948.

Washington, D.C: United States Government Printing Office, 1964. First edition of Truman's papers from 1948. Thick octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by President Truman to his nephew and niece opposite the title page in the year of publication, "To Fred and Audrey Truman from Uncle Harry with very best wishes 11-28-64." In near fine condition. A nice association. After serving as a United States Senator from Missouri (1935-45) and briefly as Vice President (1945), Harry S. Truman succeeded to the presidency on April 12, 1945, upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Germany surrendered on Truman's 61st birthday, just a few weeks after he assumed the presidency, but the war with Imperial Japan raged on and was expected to last at least another year. Truman approved the use of atomic bombs to end the fighting and to spare the millions of American and Japanese lives that would inevitably be lost in the planned invasion of Japan and Japanese-held islands in the Pacific. Although this decision and the numerous issues that arose as a result of it remain the subject of debate to this day, it was one of the principal factors that forced Japan's unconditional surrender. Truman presided over an unexpected surge in economic prosperity as America sought readjustment after long years of depression and war. His presidency was a turning point in foreign affairs, as the United States engaged in an internationalist foreign policy and renounced isolationism. Truman helped found the United Nations in 1945, issued the Truman Doctrine in 1947 to contain Communism, and got the $13 billion Marshall Plan enacted to rebuild Western Europe. His political coalition was based on the white South, labor unions, farmers, ethnic groups, and traditional Democrats across the North. Truman was able to rally these groups of supporters during the 1948 presidential election and win a surprise victory that secured a presidential term in his own right.

        Profiles In Courage.

New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1964. First edition of the Memorial Edition of Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Octavo, original half cloth, with eight pages of black-and-white photogravures. Foreword by Robert F. Kennedy. Signed "with best wishes Jacqueline Kennedy" on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed by Jacqueline Kennedy The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."

About Fine (and probably unread) in about Fine jacket, the spine panel lightly toned. The author's sixth book, winner of the National Book Award. "Herzog is a massive intellectual accomplishment that has repeatedly been likened to Joyce's Ulysses. It remains Bellow's acknowledged masterwork . . . Bellow wrote Herzog while in Puerto Rico, New York, and Chicago dealing with yet another marital catastrophe. At its heart is Bellow's profound shock at learning that his friend, Jack Ludwig, had cuckolded him. The last of their circle to know he had been deceived, Bellow lapsed into deep depression and produced Moses Herzog, an intensely self-justifying hero who, like himself, was tearful, cuckolded, and precipitated into intellectual and spiritual crisis by the failure of his marriage." When asked late in his life if he would ever return to Ireland, Joyce gave the famously enigmatic reply, 'Have I ever left it?', and Edna O'Brien's relationship with her home country is complicated in ways that are similarly fraught and complex." SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION, number 7 of only 150 deluxe copies printed on Velin de Rives. Features the work of highly-acclaimed Russian-French artist MARC CHAGALL. "Chagall's repertory of images, including massive bouquets, melancholy clowns, flying lovers, fantastic animals, biblical prophets, and fiddlers on roofs, helped to make him one of the most popular major innovators of the 20th-century School of Paris. He presented dreamlike subject matter in rich colours and in a fluent, painterly style that-while reflecting an awareness of artistic movements such as Expressionism, Cubism, and even abstraction-remained invariably personal. There is agreement that at its best it [the artist's large total output] reached a level of visual metaphor seldom attempted in modern art," ( Encylopedia Britannica ).Complete with three breathtaking lithographs by Chagall, including one double-page in color, one single page in black-and-white, and lithographic wrappers. Twenty-three reproductions and three in-text illustrations in black-and-white also included. With text (in French) by Marcel Arland and D.M. Perhaps the most emotionally intense of Ian Fleming's thrillers, these three novels feature Bond's archenemy: the supervillain and criminal mastermind with aspirations of world domination, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. In Thunderball, Fleming sketches Blofeld early life, first as Nazi collaborator, then on the Allied side before disappearing in South America and founding Spectre, the global criminal syndicate and terrorist organization that threatens to destabilize the world with two hijacked atomic bombs. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Blofeld goes underground in Switzerland, in the guise of the Comte Balthazar de Bleuchamp, but Bond tracks the Spectre chief to his stronghold in the Alps and defeats his biological warfare scheme to destroy Britain's agricultural economy. Blofeld retaliates, killing Bond's new wife, Contessa Teresa “Tracy” di Vicenzo, and throwing Bond into a tailspin that nearly destroys him before he exacts his revenge in You Only Live Twice.
