Austin: The Alcalde Press, (1964). First Edition. Hardcover. Corners with gold-plated protectors added. Rubbing of leather at the head of the spine. Very Good or better and quite scarce in this presentation binding. One of a very small but unkown number of copies bound in full red leather with a gilt decoration of a saddle on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine. Illustrated with drawings by Mac Tatchell and photographs; 80 pages. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the President on the title page: "To Dorothy Nichols/with love--/Lyndon B. Johnson." Dorothy Nichols was a personal secretary and assistant to Johnson from the time he was a freshman congressman until the end of his presidency. She was the first female assistant Johnson hired. They were so close that Johnson gave her away at her wedding and included her in his will. Books genuinely signed by LBJ are quite scarce, and most of those are copies of THE VANTAGE POINT, usually signed on a bookplate and sometimes on a tipped-in page as issued by The First Edition Circle. Association copies, such as this, are extremely difficult to come by.

SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH Inscribed to Barry Goldwater

[Washington, DC], [@1964-1966]. Photograph. Fine and exceptional. Official oversized (14" x 11") White House photograph of Lyndon Johnson and Barry Goldwater walking down a hall with Johnson's hand on Goldwater's back and looking behind him at an open door where a few men are gathered. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the President on the blank margin below the image: "To Barry Goldwater/from his favorite target - Lyndon B. Johnson." Goldwater, a five-term senator from Arizona, lost the race for president to Johnson in 1964. Known as "Mr. Conservative," he is the politician most often credited for sparking the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s and also had a substantial impact on the libertarian movement. He returned to the U.S. Senate in 1969 and served until 1987, succeeded by John McCain. In 1974, as an elder statesman of the party, Goldwater forced the resignation of Richard Nixon when the evidence of cover-up became overwhelming and impeachment was imminent. By the 1980s, the increasing influence of the Christian right on the Republican Party so conflicted with Goldwater's libertarian views that he became a vocal opponent of the religious right on issues such as abortion, gay rights, and the role of religion in public life. After painting his opponent as a right-wing legislator who wanted to abolish the social welfare programs created in the 1930s (such as Social Security), Johnson easily won the Presidency over Goldwater in 1964, carrying 44 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Goldwater, who had opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 based on his view that the act was an intrusion of the federal government into the affairs of states, won his home state of Arizona and five states of the Deep South, the first Republican to win the electoral votes of those states since Reconstruction. Johnson won 61.1% of the national popular vote, which remains the highest popular-vote percentage won by a U.S. presidential candidate since 1820. In 1965 Johnson instituted three new social welfare programs: Medicare, Medicaid, and the War on Poverty.

Molecular Microwave Oscillator and New Hyperfine Structure in the Microwave Spectrum of NH3. WITH: Infrared and Optical Masers

Lancaster PA and New York: American Institute of Physics. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITIONS of two landmark papers by Charles Townes on the development of the laser. Townes shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics "for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle" Einstein suggested "that under the proper circumstances atoms could release excess energy as light-either spontaneously or when stimulated by light... In 1951 Charles H. Townes, then at Columbia University in New York City, thought of a way to generate stimulated emission at microwave frequencies. At the end of 1953, he demonstrated a working device that focused 'excited' ammonia molecules in a resonant microwave cavity, where they emitted a pure microwave frequency. Townes named the device a maser, for 'microwave amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation'... An intense burst of maser research followed in the mid-1950s, but masers found only a limited range of applications as low-noise microwave amplifiers and atomic clocks. In 1957 Townes proposed to his brother-in-law and former postdoctoral student at Columbia University, Arthur L. Schawlow (then at Bell Laboratories), that they try to extend maser action to the much shorter wavelengths of infrared or visible light... Townes and Schawlow published their ideas for an 'optical maser' [later called a laser] in a seminal paper in the December 15, 1958, issue of Physical Review" (Britannica). The 1958 paper provided the blueprint for the laser, which was eventually used by Theodore Maiman to construct the first successful laser in 1960. TOWNES, C.H.; GORDON, J.P; ZEIGER, H.J. Molecular Microwave Oscillator and New Hyperfine Structure in the Microwave Spectrum of NH3, in The Physical Review, Vol. 95, No. 1, pp. 282-284; July 1, 1954. Quarto, original wrappers. Small, early owner signature at top of front wrapper, some fading to spine; otherwise fine. WITH: SCHAWLOW, A.L.; TOWNES, C.H. Infrared and Optical Masers, in The Physical Review, Vol. 112, No. 6, pp. 1940-1949, December 15, 1958. Quarto, original wrappers rebacked. Stamp of National Bureau of Standards at top of front wrapper, otherwise fine. Note: A custom cloth box is available for an additional $250.
