Ansel Adams TLS [typed Letter Signed with Laid-in photograph]; Irving Robbins, William Garnett

Carmel, CA, 1964 Carmel, California, 1964. Ansel Adams typed letter signed [TLS]. Two horizontal folds and one slight vertical fold to letter, else about fine. Photo is fine. Lengthy, warm, full-page letter from Ansel Adams - dated January 8, 1964, and on his letterhead - to "I.R." (Irving Robbins, a noted California collector). Not written to a stranger; in it, Adams apologizes for being ill at their last meeting and promises to be "full of beans" next time. Also referenced in the letter is another notable California photographer, aerial photographic artist and author William Garnett, about whom Adams says: "He is a GREAT photographer ! I am sure no one has approached him in creative work from the air." Signed, of course, at the close. The photograph, entitled Rocks and Limpets, Point Lobos, 1963, is on folding photographic card stock, with "Virginia & Ansel Adams" printed on the cover, and was executed by Lawton Kennedy, engraving by the Walter J. Mann Company, from an enlargement of a Polaroid Land 4 x 5 Type 55 P.N. Negative. Unique aggregation. Photo is in fine condition. L-32

First Edition. hardcover. Near Fine and quite exceptional. An undated early holograph version of Saul Bellow's only full-length play contained in a ledger-type notebook (8-1/4" x 11-3/8") with marbled paper boards and a black cloth spine. Bellow has subtitled this as "A Work in Progress." Acts I and II of this version are complete in 71 pages with 4 pages of preliminary material for an Act III, all handwritten by Bellow. The 1964 staged version was reduced to two acts. Bellow appears to have written out Acts I & II as a fair copy from previous versions and notes in preparation for completing the play with a new Act III. There are relatively few insertions and corrections in his text of the first two acts which take up about 75% of the notebook. The third act consists mostly of blank pages with 3 pages of rough notes and key speeches including what seem to be the climactic lines of his main character, the comedian Bummidge, who has been undergoing an obsessive self-analysis in the previous acts: "The world was never real for me. But now I see it's more real than I was. I never admitted that it existed. It always knew I was here (he goes around picking up objects & kissing them because they're real).... Now what is the theory. Not Momma's womb but my own empty heart?" Laid in to the notebook is a SIGNED typed 12-page fragment of an earlier version of the play, with Bellow's original title, THE CRASH PROGRAM, crossed out in ink and his new title, THE LAST ANALYSIS, written over it. Bellow manuscripts of this size and importance are seldom offered with most already housed in institutional collections.

Publisher's Mock-Up or Maquette]: The World of Atget

Horizon Press, New York 1964 - The publisher's mock-up of this landmark book on the important French photographer, written and prepared by a distinguished American photographer. Large quarto. Publisher's cloth, unstamped and unlettered. Publisher's blueline printed text laid in, or bound in on pasted photostats, the title page has been composed from cut and pasted elements, the 176 images that grace the book are also pasted in as blueline examples, and are numbered with pasted on numbers or hand corrections. One Atget image appears to be a fine quality gelatin silver photographic print of Plate 91, "Interior" (possibly printed by Abbott), and is mounted on card and laid into the mock-up (with a crease to the mount and to one corner of the image). The dust jacket proof is glued to boards with the flap copy affixed to the unprinted flaps. Some of the affixed text is loose or in a couple of cases partially detached because of the composer's glue drying, the jacket is a bit tattered, though overall mostly complete. A unique artifact presenting the birth of an important monument in photographic history, Abbott's definitive study of Atget. Provenance on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Okinawa Photo Album

[N.p.: n.p., 1964-65]. Photographs in uniformly nice condition, internally near fine, album is edgeworn with splits at the plastic covering the spiral binding, else very good in illustrated boards.. Unique photo album from the Vietnam War era, dating between 1964 and 1965, housed in an illustrated Okinawa album. Includes 105 mostly black-and-white prints, measuring approximately 5 1/2 X 2 1/2 inches. Images depict a group of young recruits stationed at a field camp in Okinawa, Japan, with a combination of both staged and candid shots. An intimate portrait of American soldier life, the album features photos of GI's engaging in horseplay, posing with firearms, and training in the surrounding region of Okinawa. Photographs are adhered to the pages and protected by clear mylar sheets. Arresting document of solider camaraderie, at times bordering on the homoerotic; images with soldiers pointing guns at each other are particularly chilling and evocative.

Typed Letter, Signed, on Ansel Adams Stationery

Ansel Adams, typed letter signed on Ansel Adams stationery (Carmel California). Dated May 6, 1964. This letter is addressed "Dear Dr. Davenport, " and continues to explain that he has just returned from a trip, hence "tardiness in replying to your letter of the 27th and commenting upon the prints." After other comments on the presentation, he offers critiques on 13 individually numbered images from a 2-Volume portfolio of images submitted by Davenport. Also present with the letter is a portion of one volume of the portfolio, with 5 images remaining in it. Cursory examination suggests that this is Vol 1 of the two. The letter signs off, "Keep it up - send more stuff whenever you can! all best" (signed in pen) Ansel Adams. All in very good conditoin. This letter has remarkable content and illustrates Adams's "teaching" mode. Charles K. Davenport was a medical doctor in California, working his way through medical school by selling his photos. He was a student of Ansel Adams and they subsequently became close friends. County. During his school years, Davenport sold photographs at banks, business offices, and other venues to help support his studies. He was a student of Ansel Adams in the 1960s, and they remained lifetime friends. Davenport's landscapes and still lifes were exhibited in the former medical society in Colton, and in San Bernardino County Museum, UC Riverside, and many other venues in California and later, in Oregon. His images appeared on magazine covers, calendars, and in books and an encyclopedia. Davenport passed away in Springfield, Oregon in 2007.
