The Spy Who Came In From The Cold.

Coward-McCann, Inc, New York 1964 - First American edition. Not the often confused book club edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Le Carre on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with the lightest of rubbing. Upon publication, John le Carré's The Spy Who Came in From the Cold forever changed the landscape of spy fiction.         1. Broken Symmetries and the Masses of Gauge Bosons; 2. Broken Symmetry and the Mass of Gauge Vector Mesons; 3. Global Conservation Laws and Massless Particles. The symmetry breaking papers. New York: The American Physical Society, 1964. All first editions.

An outstanding set of the three milestone papers in which the Higgs mechanism and the prediction of the Higgs field and Higgs boson was first published "In 1964, three teams wrote scientific papers which proposed related but different approaches to explain how mass could arise in local gauge theories. These three now famous papers were written by Robert Brout and François Englert, [paper 2] Peter Higgs,[paper 1] and Gerald Guralnik, C. Richard Hagen, and Tom Kibble,[paper 3] and are credited with the theory of the Higgs mechanism and the prediction of the Higgs field and Higgs boson. Together, these provide a theoretical means by which Goldstone's theorem (a problematic limitation affecting early modern particle physics theories) can be avoided. They show how gauge bosons can acquire non-zero masses as a result of spontaneous symmetry breaking within gauge invariant models of the universe. "As such, these form the key element of the electroweak theory that forms part of the Standard Model of particle physics, and of many models, such as the Grand Unified Theory, that go beyond it. The papers that introduce this mechanism were published in Physical Review Letters (PRL) and were each recognized as milestone papers by PRL's 50th anniversary celebration. All of the six physicists were awarded the 2010 J. J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics for this work, and in 2013 Englert and Higgs received the Nobel Prize in Physics. On 4 July 2012, the two main experiments at the LHC (ATLAS and CMS) both reported independently the confirmed existence of a previously unknown particle with a mass of about 125 GeV/<i>c</i>2 (about 133 proton masses, on the order of 10-25 kg), which is 'consistent with the Higgs boson' and widely believed to be the Higgs boson." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_PRL_symmetry_breaking_papers). Three issues of the Physical Review Letters in original printed wrappers (very fine) 1. Higgs: Broken Symmetries and the Masses of Gauge Bosons. Physical Review Letters 13 (16): 508; 2. Brout & Englert: Broken Symmetry and the Mass of Gauge Vector Mesons.         [MASSIVE ARCHIVE OF THOUSANDS OF ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND PHOTOGRAPHIC SLIDES, ALONG WITH NUMEROUS AUDIO RECORDINGS, COMPILED BY JACOB HARRIS, AN AMERICAN WHO SERVED AS A SENIOR POLICE ADVISOR IN VIETNAM AND THAILAND DURING THE VIETNAM WAR]

[Vietnam, Thailand, and elsewhere in Asia, as well as the United States, Europe and the Middle East. circa 1964 - 1974].. More than 1,700 original photographic prints and 2,000 original photographic slides, plus fourteen audio recordings. Also, miscellaneous documents. Most of the slides preserved in their original Kodak processing boxes. Some photographs loose but most bound into albums. On the whole, in near fine condition. A large and remarkable archive of images from Vietnam and Thailand, covering the decade from the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the beginning of the buildup of American forces in Vietnam to a year before the evacuation of the American embassy. The most notable aspect of the collection are the many images showing the training of local security forces by American civil and military advisors. The collection was compiled by Jacob Harris, an employee of USAID&#39;s "Office of Public Safety," whose task was to train Vietnamese and Thai police and counterinsurgency forces. Most of the images, in the form of photographs and photographic slides, were created by Harris, his wife, or his associates, and illustrate all aspects of life in those countries at the time. Harris travelled widely throughout the region, and the collection includes images from not only Vietnam and Thailand, but also from Laos, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia, India, and elsewhere. The images also document Harris&#39;s lengthy career as a New Jersey State Trooper, and his travels in other parts of the world. ^Jacob Joseph Harris (ca. 1910- 2005) also known as "Jack" and "Jake" served for thirty-six years (1928- 1964) with the New Jersey State Police, eventually attaining the rank of Major. Included herein is a printed card, dated December 31, 1960, marking thirty years of Harris&#39;s service to the state of New Jersey. In 1964 he began what he called his "second career," taking a position with the United States Agency for International Development, and was stationed first in Vietnam and then in Thailand. As his postings permitted, he was joined by his wife of many years, Virginia, and she appears in a great number of the photographs. ^Harris was associated mostly with USAID&#39;s "Office of Public Safety," which was established in 1957 to train the police forces of America&#39;s overseas allies. The OPS was often used by the Central Intelligence Agency as a cover for its agents abroad, and operated in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia until it was shut down by Congress in 1974. At other times, Harris was a part of the State Department&#39;s "Office of Missions." Whether or not Harris was directly employed by the CIA has not been ascertained, and it seems that his actual role in Vietnam and Thailand was in fact the training of local police and paramilitary forces. However, Harris&#39;s proximity to high ranking officials in the governments of South Vietnam and Thailand, as well as the nature of many of the photographs in this collection, show that he played an active and important role in training local forces to fight the Vietcong and Thai insurgents. And it is certainly true that the various departments and agencies of the U.S. government in southeast Asia at this time (those working overtly or covertly) worked together toward their common goal. Jacob Harris ended his career at the State Department in Washington, and retired to Florida in 1975. ^A slide included as part of the collection explains the "Objective of U.S. Assistance to Civil Police Programs & Paramilitary Forces Overseas." Among these are "encourage humane responsible police administration; enforce the law & maintain public order with minimum use of force; counter subversion & terrorism; improve the character and image of civil police & paramilitary forces binding them more closely to the community." A large percentage of the photographs and slides in this collection show Jacob Harris with the Vietnamese and Thai officials and officers that he worked with, trained, and advised during his decade of service. Included are images of military and political leaders, members of the Thai royal family, and members of military and police forces. A number of the photographs show police operations against members of the Vietcong or other subversive organizations, several of them showing dead bodies. One album is devoted to photographs showing a Thai operation against revolutionaries, with pictures of soldiers, dead and mangled bodies of the enemy, and members of the Thai forces recuperating and being commended at their hospital beds. This same album contains a number of typescripts in Thai that appear to describe the actions depicted. A few other photographs have manuscript ink notes (apparently in Jacob Harris&#39;s hand), identifying the scene. One, showing a dead body, is captioned "Vietcong," while another, dated April 2, 1969, shows a Thai military force (with some members identified), with a caption explaining that they were "assigned to eliminate Durae Gang." Some photographs are quite chilling in their juxtaposition, as in one album where pictures of the Harris&#39;s and their friends at the beach are displayed beside photographs of dead Vietcong soldiers. ^The photographs and slides show Harris and his American colleagues (and often their wives) interacting with Vietnamese and Thai officials, the local citizenry, and each other. One group of photographs shows a party thrown for Harris and his wife when they were reassigned from Vietnam to Thailand in 1968, in the wake of the Battle of Hue. Several images show Harris visiting villages and interacting with locals, and the difficult lives lived by Thai and Vietnamese villagers is clearly evident. Many of these images show villages populated mostly by the elderly, women, and small children. The absence of most men speaks volumes - they may have left to fight for the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, for the Vietcong, or may have lost their lives. It is clear from the images in this collection that despite the hardships encountered by American troops in Vietnam, that USAID officials lived comfortable lives. Many of the photographs show them at parties, vacationing at beach resorts, lounging by swimming pools, etc. ^As mentioned, though stationed in Vietnam and then Thailand, Harris travelled widely throughout Asia, including to Hong Kong, Singapore, Macao, Malaysia, and Laos. He also travelled throughout the countries he was stationed in, and there are images in this archive of Saigon, the Vietnamese provincial capital of Dalat, Danang, Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Angkor Wat, and much more. Many of the images of Vietnam show a country that still bears a heavy French influence, before the Communist takeover of the 1970s. Other images show trips taken by the Harris&#39;s to Europe and the Middle East, as well as photographs documenting his life in New Jersey and his earlier career with the state police. ^The more than 1700 photographs are a mixture of black and white and color, ranging in size from 2¾ x 3½ inches to 3½ x 5½ inches, though a handful are larger. Included are more than fifty boxes of slides, some 2,000 original slides in all. The images in the slides appear to have been taken by Harris or his wife, and are in color. ^As with the photographic prints, the slides are a mixture of military and non-military scenes. parades, assemblies featuring police and military officials, pictures of village life, aerial views of the Vietnamese and Thai countryside, etc. There are many images of American military airplanes and equipment, training exercises, aerial views of the countryside, several images of the de-militarized zone, and much more. One group of slides shows an anti-American parade in Vietnam, featuring signs reading "Kick out Taylor," protesting the 1964 appointment of General Maxwell Taylor as ambassador to South Vietnam. As a military advisor to President Kennedy, Taylor had enthusiastically supported sending more American combat troops to Vietnam. Other slides show Jacob Harris accompanying a Vietnamese delegation on a visit to the United States, during which they went to Washington, and to New Jersey, where they met with his old colleagues in the New Jersey State Police. ^Yet another box of slides is labelled "Hong Kong" and "Red Chinese border," and shows a number of views of Hong Kong in the late 1960s, as well as views of mainland China. Other images document visits by American dignitaries to Thailand and Vietnam, and there is a series of slides featuring Harris with ARVN General General Nguyen Chanh Thi, and others showing Harris and police officers at the strategically important Hai Van Pass near Danang. One group of thirty-five slides, housed in a box labeled "DMZ bombing," show the aftermath of an air raid (presumably by U.S. forces), with bombed- out buildings and ruined villages and countryside. Other images show bombed out buildings in a more urban setting. ^In all, a massive archive of images documenting American activities at the local and police levels in Vietnam and Thailand over the course of a crucial decade. The Harris archive is a wealth of views of all aspects of life in the region during this period, and helps deepen our understanding of the effects of the American presence in southeast Asia during the era of the Vietnam War.

Two Ben-Gurion handwritten letters in English, one expressing his disagreement with Moshe Sharett, most likely regarding the re-investigation of the Lavon affair, the other expressing appreciation for a gift - a book on the History of Zionism

Sdeh Boker, Israel, 1964, 1970 Autograph Letter Signed, "D. Ben-Gurion" in English, 1p, 5" x 8.5" on his lined pad, perforated at the right, Tel-Aviv, December 1, 1964. To Mrs. Mark Gerald. Fine condition. In full, "Dear Mrs. Gerald / I read your letter to Mr. Sharett, and I must confess I don't agree with you. / I am terribly sorry I cannot find the drawing you left with me in Hotel Sharon. / Perhaps it is in Sdeh Boker; I am returning there next week, and if I find it there - it will be immediately sent you with my thanks. / Yours, / D. Ben-Gurion", The disagreement with Moshe Sharett was about who was responsible for what was called The Lavon Affair. The Lavon affair refers to a failed Israeli covert operation, code named Operation Susannah, conducted in Egypt in the Summer of 1954, so named after the Israeli Defense Minister, Pinhas Lavon. Ben-Gurion blamed him for the fiasco and forced his dismissal. Lavon was exonerated by the Israeli cabinet in 1960, but in 1964, Ben-Gurion claimed to have new evidence against La

        Exceedingly Rare Document Signed Twice

El Paso, 1964. unbound. 1 page, 3 x 8.25 inches, El Paso, Texas, April 17, 1964 -- a check drawn on "Bobby Fuller&#39;s Teen Rendezvous," a club that the then-21-year-old rock star rented in a shopping mall, prior to his national success. Boldly signed "Robert G. Fuller" below his printed name and signed again on the back. (South West National Bank machine cancellation markings are far from the signature). The check is accompanied with the original Funeral Home prayer card and itinerary, which includes the Funeral Service and the interment in Forest Lawn, Hollywood. Note: Bobby Fuller is by far the rarest of the tragic 1960s rock-n-roll figures and rarely comes to market except for the occasional signed napkin or autograph book page. Both items are in near fine condition. American rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Texas who was the leader of the Bobby Fuller Four, best known for their two 1966 back-to-back national #1 hits "I Fought the Law" and "Love&#39;s Made a Fool of You." On July 18, 1966, Fuller and top industry celebrities, including Phil Spector, Sonny & Cher, Donovan, John Phillips, etc. spent the night celebrating the fact that "I Fought the Law" had become the #1 record in America. Nobody seems to recall when Bobby left the party, but the following morning Bobby was found dead inside his brand new Oldsmobile. The medical examiners report stated that: "Bobby&#39;s face, chest, and side were covered in bruises (petechial hemorrhages). There was blood on Bobby&#39;s face and chest and on the car seat. His body and clothes were soaked with gasoline. On the floorboard was a partly full gas can with a rubber hose attached to the spout. Cause of Death: Murder.

ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT, SIGNED, WITH AUTOGRAPH INSERTIONS

Mallorca, Spain. 2 November 1964. Six and one half closely typed octavo pages, plus covering t.l.s., as well as a relatively clean typescript, 7 leaves, probably secretarial, of a revised draft. Fine. Addressed to William Arrowsmith, in response to a questionnaire for ARION magazine. Discursive, vintage Dahlberg, in response to the query "What do we mean by the word &#39;classic&#39;?" Dahlberg holds forth on the value and necessity of a knowledge of the classics, while unhesitatingly pointing to new classics, as well as to the merits and demerits of the works of his contemporaries: Pound, Tate, Bourne, Herbst, Eliot, Murray, et al. He continues in response to queries about the nature of education, teachers, etc. He sums up: "Still, had I to repeat my youth, I should look for the Olive of Minerva in our pantheons of learning...The American college is no cloister...Spite of natural human error, and the influence of the Mammon literary agora, it is conceivable that our Thoreaus, Melvilles and Poes will not be obscure wraiths in our own day...The parables are more important than the raiment and the meat; for the poet can somehow endure indigence but not the neglect of his books." Six of the seven pages of the response bear manuscript insertions and corrections, some very substantial. The second typescript, also 7pp. is relatively clean and incorporates Dahlberg&#39;s revisions as evident in the worked over text of the earlier draft. It was typed on a different typewriter, and may have been prepared by a staff member of ARION. Published as Billings C108.

        Exceedingly Rare Document Signed Twice

El Paso 1964 - American rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Texas who was the leader of the Bobby Fuller Four, best known for their two 1966 back-to-back national #1 hits "I Fought the Law" and "Love's Made a Fool of You." On July 18, 1966, Fuller and top industry celebrities, including Phil Spector, Sonny & Cher, Donovan, John Phillips, etc. spent the night celebrating the fact that "I Fought the Law" had become the #1 record in America. Nobody seems to recall when Bobby left the party, but the following morning Bobby was found dead inside his brand new Oldsmobile. The medical examiners report stated that: "Bobby's face, chest, and side were covered in bruises (petechial hemorrhages). There was blood on Bobby's face and chest and on the car seat. His body and clothes were soaked with gasoline. On the floorboard was a partly full gas can with a rubber hose attached to the spout. Cause of Death: Murder." 1 page, 3 x 8.25 inches, El Paso, Texas, April 17, 1964 -- a check drawn on "Bobby Fuller's Teen Rendezvous," a club that the then-21-year-old rock star rented in a shopping mall, prior to his national success.
