Mao Zhu Xi Yu Lu [Chinese] ("Quotations of Chairman Mao" commonly called "The Little Red Book").

General Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army [nd but May, 1964], [China, probably Peking] - TP + 1 leaf = Portrait of Chairman Mao + 1-2 = Contents + 1-250; 12 mo. First Edition.Compiled and edited by Tian Xiao Guang, this first edition of the "Quotations of Chairman Mao" is distinguished from all other editions by its size, 5 ?" high, and by the fact that it contains only 30 chapters and ends with page 250. (Later editions are 4?" high, contain 33 chapters and come in a variety of paginations.) It was originally published in very limited numbers for distribution among the top echelons of the Chinese military. The first issue of the book was bound in the printed paper wrappers offered here - while the red vinyl plastic covers, that later became so ubiquitous, were still being printed. This small, succinct and easily portable book of inspirational teachings exploded in popularity and over the next four years, a total of 720 million copies were printed. It has been estimated that overall between 5 and 6½ billion copies of the book were printed during Mao's attempt to reform Chinese society and it is reputed to be the second most printed book in world history - preceded only by the Bible. The book was originally published with an endorsement page written by Mao's longtime comrade-in-arms, Lin Biao, quoting the revolutionary hero, Lei Feng ("Study Chairman Mao's writings, follow his teachings and act according to his instructions"). Lin Biao was primarily responsible for publishing and promoting this book and his career - already extremely successful - was greatly enhanced by his high profile involvement with The Little Red Book. By 1969, Lin Biao had been designated as Mao's official heir and successor by the Ninth Party Congress. But, in late 1971, Lin Biao was suspected in a plot to assassinate Mao and he died when his plane was shot down over Mongolia. Mao subsequently ordered that Lin Biao's memory be effaced in China and that the endorsement page be removed from the millions and millions of extant copies. Since failure to follow this command was interpreted as disloyalty to Mao - an offense that could be fatal during the Cultural Revolution in which this book played such a central role - almost all surviving copies, including this one, do not have that page still in place. Also removed from this copy - as commonly happened following the excision of the Lin Biao endorsement - is the single-line, red-type ("Workers of the World Unite!") half title page that originally preceded the title page along with the two-page "Introduction." Original stapled, printed wrappers with a red field and black lettering to the front cover and red lettering to the spine. The title-page is printed in red and green and is followed by the brown portrait of the young Chairman Mao. All of the text is in Chinese. The covers are lightly soiled, worn and creased - with a small red stain to the upper right edge of the front cover. With occasional soiling stains to the pages - this being an obviously well-read, but equally well-preserved copy of this amazingly important book. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.         The Giving Tree [Pictorial Children's Reader, Learning to Read, Skill Building, Story of a Boy and a Tree, the Gift of Giving, love and Returning Love, Hb in Dj 1e]

Clean and Unmarked Text: New York : Harper and Row, 1964. Clean and Unmarked Text: New York : Harper and Row, 1964 Quality Hardback : hard cover edition in Very Good condition, some slight wear to edges, as normal for age of book; and in good ORIGINAL dust jacket with some minor egdewear and slight chipping, mylar protected, the portrait on the back of dust jackt is a waist up photo of Silverstein with curly hair and full beard, although the dust jacket is price-clippd, it has all the true first edition points. Ffep is removed. Book starts on title page. Does not detract from the beauty of the book, interior is clean and unmarked. A wonderful book to enjoy or would make a great GIFT IDEA for the fan / reader in your life. ABOUT THE GIVING TREE-- Editorial Reviews : To say that this particular apple tree is a 'giving tree' is an understatement. In Shel Silverstein's popular tale of few words and simple line drawings, a tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade provider, and apple bearer for a rambunctious little boy. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy, but with time it becomes more challenging for the generous tree to meet his needs. When he asks for money, she suggests that he sell her apples. When he asks for a house, she offers her branches for lumber. When the boy is old, too old and sad to play in the tree, he asks the tree for a boat. She suggests that he cut her down to a stump so he can craft a boat out of her trunk. He unthinkingly does it. At this point in the story, the double-page spread shows a pathetic solitary stump, poignantly cut down to the heart the boy once carved into the tree as a child that said 'M.E. + T.' 'And then the tree was happy... but not really.' When there's nothing left of her, the boy returns again as an old man, needing a quiet place to sit and rest. The stump offers up her services, and he sits on it. "And the tree was happy." While the message of this book is unclear (Take and take and take? Give and give and give? Complete self-sacrifice is good? Complete self-sacrifice is infinitely sad?), Silverstein has perhaps deliberately left the book open to interpretation. All ages / Karin Snelson ;; Book Description 'Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy.' So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Ages 10+. First Edition / Early Reprint. Hard Back / Pictorial Binding. Good Clean Cond./Mylar Protected. Illus. by Fully Illustrated. POPULAR TITLE OF INTEREST. A: Children's Reading Book.

        Yvette Gilbert

, c. 1964. c. 1964. Sheet size: 158 × 190 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. Portrait of the French cabaret singer and actress Yvette Guilbert (1865–1944). Presumably done for the review of Bettina Knapp and Myra Chipman's That Was Yvette (1964), one of the few biographies of Guilbert in English. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Spectral Analysis of Economic Time Series.

Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ 1964 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Signed by Clive Granger on the title page. Books signed by the Nobel Prize-winning economist are uncommon. Clive Granger was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in economics in 2003 along with Robert Engle for discoveries in the analysis of time series data that had changed fundamentally the way in which economists analyze financial and macroeconomic data. "In 1956, at the age of just 21, Granger was appointed a junior lecturer in statistics at the University of Nottingham. He was interested mainly in applied statistics and economics Granger chose as the topic of his doctoral thesis time series analysis, a field in which he felt that relatively little work had been done at the time. In 1959 he obtained his Ph.D. with a thesis on "Testing for Non-stationarity". In 1964 Granger published the results of research in a book called Spectral Analysis of Economic Time Series Granger which proved influential in the adoption of the new methods" (Tore Frängsmyr).       Tradition du Livre, Paris 1964 - Two volumes, complete. A PERFECT SET OF THIS MONUMENTAL PUBLICATION. From a deluxe edition of 50 sets supposed to have a drawing by Edy-Legrand, this set, exceptionally, HAS TWO LARGE ORIGINAL GOUACHES REPRODUCED IN THE BOOK AS DOUBLE-PAGE COLOR PLATES. Illustrated throught in color and black & white. Edition limited to 3426 numbered sets, of which this set is ONE OF ONLY 50 printed on fine wove paper and bound in full black morocco, and accompanied by original artwork. Gouache and india ink on fine wove paper. Each painting measures 50 x 65.2 cm. (Three times the size of the double-page plates that reproduce them.) The artwork used in this publication is especially interesting as there is a section in each volume where the artist himself comments on each of the works used. The present gouaches ("Songe d'Innocent III / "Dream of Innocent III" and "En présence de l'évêque d'Assise, François se dépouille de ses richesses / In the Presence of the Bishop of Assissi, St. Francis Strips Himself of His Worldly Riches") are reproduced as double-page plates (vol. I, between pp. 16 and 17; vol. II, between pp. 80 and 81). The commentaries appear in volume I, p 261; and volume II, p. 232. THESE TWO GOUACHES, aside from depicting two of the most important scenes from the book, ARE AMONG EDY-LEGRAND'S TRULY OUTSTANDING ILLUSTRATIONS. The colors are bright and fresh. The reproductions in the book, only one-third the size, do not do them justice. Folio. BEAUTIFULLY BOUND IN FULL BLACK MOROCCO BY ENGEL. IN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION, WITH NO DEFECTS. SURELY THE BEST POSSIBLE SET of an important work by one of the great book artists--even one of the great artists--of the 20th century.

        Typed Letter Signed

Pacific Palisades: np. Pacific Palisades: np. 1st Edition. No Binding. IMPORTANT SIGNED LETTER BY RONALD REAGAN. On the heels of the great success of his famous speech for Barry Goldwater, Reagan weighs a political career for himself. Reagan "stepped up his activism in 1964, serving as cochairman of Barry Goldwater's presidential campaign in California and delivering a speech at the Republican National Convention in San Francisco. After the convention, as the Republican Party's chances of unseating incumbent Lyndon Johnson dwindled, Reagan stood by his candidate even as other Republicans kept their distance form Goldwater's conservative message, confrontational style, and disastrous poll numbers. When some of Goldwater's supporters asked Reagan to tape a television appearance on the candidate's behalf, he readily agreed. The campaign bought thirty minutes of airtime on NBC on October 27. "Reagan's reincarnation as a political figure began that night. In the decades to come, Reagan's admirers would refer to the television address of October 27, 1964 as THE Speech, the speech that launched one of the nation's most memorable political careers, the speech that put Reagan on an improbably journey to Sacramento and then the White House. Reagan himself acknowledged that his life was transformed on the October night in 1964. The speech, he wrote in his autobiography, 'was one of the most important milestones in my life'... "The speech was an instant hit; it was replayed throughout the country and helped raise eight million dollars for Goldwater's doomed campaign. Ronald Reagan's political career had begun" (Terry Golway, Ronald Reagan's America). After the speech and Goldwater's subsequent defeat, Reagan was under pressure to run for political office. In this important letter, written three weeks after the speech, Reagan acknowledges the pressure and shares his thought about the future and "his responsibility." Dated November 19, 1964 and addressed to Theodore L. Humes, the Pennsylvania State Chairman for Citizens for Goldwater-Miller, the letter reads in full: Dear Ted, Just a hasty line to answer your letter which was a bright spot in the flood of mail I'm still trying to handle. While I have never aspired to a political career I realize there is much to think about in that regard from the standpoint of my responsibility. I assure you I'm going to do some deep soul searching in the days ahead. I appreciate your offer of help and it shall be taken into consideration in my thinking. Best regards. Sincerely, [signed] Ronnie Ronald Reagan One 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of Reagan's Pacific Palisades letterhead. A few folds, small piece of mounting tape on verso, otherwise fine.

London: Marlborough Fine Art Limited, 1964. (ROTHKO, MARK). Marlborough Fine Art Limited Staff. MARK ROTHKO - WITH A SPECTACULAR ASSOCIATION "THANK YOU" NOTE FROM THE ARTIST LAID IN. With a Note Signed by the Artist. London: Marlborough Fine Art Limited, 1964. First Edition. Small 4to. Wrappers in Acetate Jacket. Artist Monograph. Fine/Fine. np (36pp), 12 color and 1 b&w illustration + color cover. With an exhibition checklist, biography, bibliography, collections listing, and exhibition history. This is the beautifully illustrated catalogue published in conjunction with a 1964 show of eight paintings on canvas along with five works on paper by Mark Rothko held at London's Marlborough Fine Art Limited. It reproduces each of the thirteen exhibited works in full color, and marked the very first presentation by Rothko at Frank Lloyd's gallery. Marlborough remained the pioneering Abstract Expressionist's representative until his passing in 1970 when the Rothko Estate's lawsuit regarding Lloyd's questionable handling of sales, monies owed the artist, and the disappearance of scores of paintings resulted in what became arguably the most famous and sordid art-related trial of the twentieth century. A bright, most handsome copy in the publisher's printed acetate dust jacket with a 4 1/4 x 3" white cardstock note inscribed "Rita and I / thank you for the / beautiful dinner / beautiful evening / and beautiful you / Mark" in the artist's hand in blue ink loosely inserted. Rita refers to Rita Ziprowski Reinhardt, the widow of artist Ad Reinhardt with whom Rothko was having an extra-marital affair at the time of his death. Signed or inscribed books and letters from Mark Rothko are extraordinarily uncommon. While not personalized, this catalogue and loosely inserted card came to us from the library of Bernard Reis - the artist's friend, collector, and accountant who was named as one of the three executors of the Rothko Estate. At the same time Reis also was Marlborough's accountant, and became the gallery's director shortly after Rothko's death. He was ultimately found liable for self-dealing as a director of the Rothko Foundation in the "Matter of Rothko".         The Luce-Donovan Dinner, May 25, 1964

[New York: Time, Inc.], 1964. [New York: Time, Inc.], 1964. (TIME, INC) 8vo. Hedley Donovan's own copy of Time's compilation of the remarks made by various individuals on the celebration of his appointment as editor-in-chief of all Time Inc. Publications. Illustrated with photographs and photo-montage endpapers. Original red glazed calf, gilt rule on upper cover, "Hedley Donovan" stamped in gilt at lower right corner; fine. Provenance: Estate oif Hedley Donovan . On April 16, 1964, the Time, Inc. Board of Directors, "acting on the suggestion of Henry R. Luce" named Hedley Donovan to its top position, editor-in-chief. Luce, Time co-founder and for 20 years editor-in-chief, was appointed editorial chairman, and at the New York Hilton on May 25 a dinner was held to honor the two men at which Luce, Donvan, and other Time Inc. executives spoke. This is a beautifully produced record of their remarks, including these by Donovan: "This [piece] appeared in the newspaper of Jefferson High School in Minneapolis, a publication that I'm afraid some of you don't follow as closely as you might: 'Hedley Donovan was selected home room reporter by his class for the Jeffersonian the first year that Mr. McRae sponsored it. Because of his fine contribution the first semester he was selected as assistant editor the second semester. Just recently Mr. Donovan was named Editor-in-Chief of Time-Life corporation'. End of item". (The headline of the article was "Reporter Steps Up"). The most desirable copy of a splendid icon of American journalism

Co-linearity of the gene with the polypeptide chain [first study to show co-linearity].

1964 - Sarabhai, A. S.; Stretton, A. O. W., Brenner, Sydney (1927- ); and Bolle, A. Co-linearity of the gene with the polypeptide chain. Offprint from Nature 201 (1964). [4]pp. Text illustrations. 280 x 218 mm. Without wrappers as issued. Light browning, minor creasing, small marginal tears, otherwise very good. First Separate Edition. Brenner and his colleagues performed the first study to show co-linearity; i.e., that there is a simple congruence between the amino acid sequence of a protein and the nucleotide sequence of the gene determining that protein. Brenner and his team were working with "nonsense" mutants, called amber mutants, that terminated protein synthesis in E. coli genes."The presence of random nonsense mutants would therefore yield multiple random protein fragments of different sizes. . . . [W]e now suddenly realized that since we had all these amber mutants in this gene we could give a topological proof of co-linearity. And we wouldn't have to do any protein sequencing! The only assumption we would have to make is that the protein is always read from the same end, which seemed a very reasonable one. So in 1964 we published a paper which proved that the gene and the protein were co-linear by an argument that was totally unexpected at that time. We showed that as the amber mutations moved further and further to the right in the position of the gene, we got progressively more and more of the protein made :(Brenner, My Life, p. 103). Co-linearity means that changes in DNA sequence can produce changes in protein sequence at corresponding positions. Working independently, Charles Yanofsky and his colleagues were also able to show co-linearity; "it was the Yanofsky work on tryptophan synthetase that was to provide the specifics of amino acid substitutions with gene mutations" (Brock, p. 312).
