This is an attempt at a definitive encyclopaedia of the environment, archaeology, ethnology, social anthropology, ethnohistory, linguistics and physical anthropology of the native peoples of Mexico and Central America. The Handbook was assembled at the Middle American Research Institute of Tulane University with the aid of grants from the National Science Foundation. George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in. Condition: All volumes have Foster's stamp on front end paper, except the supplements 2 through 6 which are as new. An occasional word underlined by Foster in the texts. Jacket spines sunned. Supplement 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and six issued without jackets. Over all a better than very good set in like jackets. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

"FARNHAM'S FREEHOLD" [novel]. TYPED MANUSCRIPT, SIGNED (TMsS), the first third of the novel , first carbon copy

Pages soiled by compositor's dirty fingers, some offset and smearing. of carbon but perfectly legible, some edge nicks and faint creases,. old stab marks in upper edges of some leaves, but overall in very. good condition. (#103460). The setting copy, extensively copy-edited and marked up for the printer. 205 leaves, doubled-spaced, typed on rectos only, plus ribbon-copy cover sheet with story blurb. The novel was published as a three-part serial by IF magazine in the July, August and October 1964 issues before its book publication later that year by G. P. Putnam's Sons. This is the magazine setting copy for the first installment. It is signed in blue ball point ink on the first page by Heinlein and the magazine's cover sheet is marked "July IF" in blue ink, presumably in Heinlein's hand. The manuscript has numerous handwritten editorial changes in pencil and red ink (most likely by Frederik Pohl), mostly excisions and, less frequently, brief insertions of text, as well as instructions for the printer. The editor has cut over 60 separate passages, ranging from a line to a page; about 5-10% of the text. The present manuscript thus preserves a significantly different version of Heinlein's text. The novel was written during the fall of 1962, with the Cuban Missile Crisis in the background, and was originally called GRAND SLAM. Heinlein biographer William Patterson writes, "GRAND SLAM was a very uncharacteristically pessimistic book, with the protagonist tossed from situation to situation and having no control over his own destiny. It was written at astonishing speed -- 25 days for a 500 page typescript (about 150,000 words, or nearly 6,000 words per day) -- probably the only way Heinlein could have sustained the dark mood". This work has been described as a "long and opinionated novel of ideas, invokes rather unpleasantly a Black despotism in the USA of the far future - and begins to fully articulate a theme that obsessed the late RAH: the notion of the family as utterly central" (Clute and Nicholls [eds], The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction [1993], p. 556).

        Conversations avec Picasso

NRF Gallimard, Paris 1964 - Octavo. 334pp. Original printed wrappers with red and black lettering on front cover. Book in a 2/3 red leather modern custom made clamshell over tan cloth with raised bands and gold lettering on spine. First trade edition of Brassaï’s intimate account of his experiences with Picasso. Brassaï (the pseudonym for Gyula Halasz) originally trained to be an artist, but after arriving in Paris in 1923, he instead turned to journalism. His artistic yet hauntingly candid works of photojournalism of Paris nightlife won him international acclaim in the 1930s. During the German occupation, Brassaï worked in Picasso’s studio, and used Picasso as the subject of numerous post-War photographs, many of which are presented in this book. Picasso said of "Conversations," "Read this book if you want to understand me." According to Brassaï, who has been described by Henry Miller as "a living eye," the ideal photographer is "an implacable spectator, an impartial witness and a faithful chronicler," but also someone with a "sense of the magic beneath the surface of reality" (Roth, 76). Brassaï brings these observational skills to bear in his account of his interactions with Picasso. Brassaï's lifelong friendship with Picasso resulted in several photographic books, notably "Les Sculptures de Picasso" (1948) and this "Conversations avec Picasso" (1964). Age-toning and slight foxing on covers. Text in French. Clamshell in overall near to fine, wrappers in good+, interior in near fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        DOCUMENTS

The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore

New Directions, New York 1964 - First edition, second issue (of three) with pages 19-22 tipped in and Scene two starting on page 21 (approximately only 50 copies of the first issue were produced). Fine in a slightly age-toned, very near fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by Williams to actress Ruth Ford: "Dear Love with all my heart, Tennessee." In Williams' *Memoirs* he refers to Ford as "the wise and lovely actress, Ruth Ford, who seems to have been born with more worldly wisdom than I have accumulated even at this point in life." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's *No Exit* in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on *West Side Story*. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of *Eloise*, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title *Requiem for a Nun*, a sequel to his early and controversial novel *Sanctuary*, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (*Requiem for a Nun* was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98. A wonderful inscription and nice association. See this book in 3D on our site.         Sigma Portfolio 2-5, 12, and 15

[London: Sigma Project. 1964]. Loose mimeographed sheets stapled at one corner with printed rectos and two loose sheets. All but one measuring 8" x 13". Folded from mailing with light wear at a few corners and one with an address stamp and blue smudge, overall near fine or better. After the publication of Cain's Book, Trocchi moved to London with his family and for the next two years focused much of his time on the Sigma Project, consisting of a series of mimeographed portfolio mailings as a way of directly connecting with readers. The intent behind the project was to further his Situationist-influenced theory for cultural revolution based on a focus on one's "inner space" of self-consciousness as a way of influencing society. The Sigma Project included both political works and letters authored by Trocchi, as well as by William Burroughs, Stan Brakage, Michael McClure, and Robert Kelly. All the issues are difficult to obtain and to identify properly, which makes assembling a complete set particularly difficult. This partial set includes:• Sigma Portfolio 2 - Invisible Insurrection of a Million Minds. Written by Trocchi. [1964]. 8pp. Originally published in the Scottish literary journal Saltire Review in 1962. Trocchi lays out his idea behind the Sigma Project. OCLC locates five copies.• Sigma Portfolio 3 - Sigma: A Tactical Blueprint. Written by Trocchi. [1964]. 7pp. Originally printed in City Lights Journal 2. Plan of action. OCLC locates four copies.• Sigma Portfolio 4 -- Potlatch. Unsigned but written by Trocchi. [1964]. [1], 5pp. Solicitation for contributions for an "interpersonal log-book" to be entitled potlatch, along with several pages of Situationist text. OCLC locates three copies.• Sigma Portfolio 5 - Sigma General Information. Second impression. [1964]. 8pp. Anonymous essay discussing the Sigma Project in relation to theories from R.D. Laing, Wallace Berman, William Burroughs, and others. OCLC locates three copy.• Sigma Portfolio 12 - Subscription Form. [1964]. 1p. Brief overview of the Sigma Portfolio which is "outflanking the traditional trap of publishing-house policy, and by means of which the reader gets it, so to speak 'hot' from the writer's pen." OCLC locates one copy.• Sigma Portfolio 15 - [Letter to Potential Subscribers]. [1964]. 1p. List of Sigma Portfolios to date (11), along with a quote from the playwright John Arden on the Sigma Project. OCLC locates one copy. .

        Les dames de Mougins

Cercle d'Art - Paris 1964. 1 Volume/1. *********************** [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
