The Independence of the Continuum Hypothesis, Part I-II" [and] "Set Theory and the Continuum Hypothesis" in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Volume 50 (1963) and Volume 51 (1964)

      - TWO MILESTONE PAPERS ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS. Two volume (in original wraps) first edition of Paul Cohen's seminal contribution to set theory wherein he established the independence of the axiom of choice and the independence of the continuum hypothesis. Cohen's efforts rank among the most important achievements in 20th century mathematics. Establishing the truth or falsehood of the continuum was the first in Hilbert's famous list of mathematical problems, presented in an address in 1900. All attempts to prove or disprove Cantor's conjecture failed until 1938, when Kurt Gödel showed that it was impossible to disprove the continuum hypothesis. Building upon Godel's landmark work, Cohen developed the mathematical technique of forcing in order to prove consistency and independence in results. These two papers are the inaugural examples of the new technique of forcing. "If Godel's construction of L had launched set theory as a distinctive field of mathematics, then Cohen's forcing began its transformation into a modern, sophisticated one" (Kanamori, "Cohen and Set Theory," Bulletin of Symbolic Logic, 14, 3, Sept. 2008, 352-374). Cohen's new method was so helpful that within a decade, forcing grew to play "a crucial role in the transformation of set theory into a modern, sophisticated field of mathematics, one tremendously successful in the investigations of the continuum, transfinite combinatorics, and strong propositions and their consistency strength. In all these directions, forcing became integral to the investigation and became part of their very sense, to the extent that issues about the method became central and postulations in its terms, "forcing axioms", became pivotal? The extent and breadth of the expansion of set theory henceforth dwarfed all that came before, both in terms of the numbers of people involved and the results established. With clear intimations of a new and concrete way of building models, set theorists rushed in and with forcing were soon establishing a cornucopia of relative consistency results, truths in a wider sense, with some illuminating classical problems of mathematics. CONDITION & DETAILS: Easton: The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 4to (10 x 6.75 inches; 250 x 169mm). Both issues in original wraps, rebacked at the spine with minor wear. Very slight and light toning to the front wrap of Volume 51. Both issues housed in a handsome brown clamshell case gilt-lettered at the spine. The interiors are in near-fine condition.

C.J. Bucher, Lucerne, SWITZERLAND 1964 - np, profusely illustrated in b&w gravure. Designed by Marvin Israel. Text in English. "Nothing Personal" is Richard Avedon's strikingly beautiful 1964 collaboration with noted literary lion James Baldwin. The photographer's second book, its images primarily hail from "Harper's Bazaar" and other magazine editorial work from the fifties and sixties. With figures from politics, society, fashion, literature, and the arts, it is a veritable who's who of power of the mid-Twentieth Century containing many of Avedon's most famous portraits including Dwight David Eisenhower in close up, the fragile Marilyn Monroe, a smug George Wallace, the pregnant Ted Kennedys in the surf, and many, many more. These are beautifully reproduced in stark black and white gravure, with Marvin Israel's book design here every bit the equal of the legendary Alexey Brodovitch's contribution for Avedon's first work, "Observations". An internally clean and sound example of the 1964 C.J. Bucher first Swiss edition with an English language text lacking a slipcase bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "For Dear . with gratitude ever, Dick Avedon -" in black fountain pen on the verso of the front free endpaper showing some mild brown staining to a few pages along the foredge of the textblock. The binding has a bit of play, and the glossy white boards show some overall wear, soiling and light age-toning with abrasions through to the cardboard at the tips. In addition, the paper covering the spine seems to have separated and subsequently been non-professionally repaired with two overlapping strips of black linen library tape run along its length. All in all, a sharper copy in hand than it describes here of this classic volume. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Representation of a function by its line integrals. Two parts (complete). In J. Appl. Phys 34-35

1964. Mathematical Theory behind the CT Scanner-Beginnings of Digital Image Processing <p>Cormack, Allan M. (1924-98). (1) Representation of a function by its line integrals, with some radiological applications. In J. Applied Physics 34 (1963): 2722-27. Whole number. 2535-2922pp. Text illustrations. (2) Representation of a function by its line integrals, with some radiological applications. II. In J. Applied Physics 35 (1964): 2908-13. Whole number. 2789-3102pp. Text illustrations. The two numbers bound together in library buckram, original front wrappers present. Light toning, otherwise very good. Library stamps of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory on front wrappers.</p><p>First Edition. Cormack&#39;s two-part paper, published in the early 1960s, set forth the mathematical theory of axial tomography, the method by which the varying X-ray absorption rates of tissues in the human body can be used to construct a detailed picture of the organs and soft tissues. For this achievement Cormack shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with Godfrey Hounsfield, who in 1973 invented the first practical computer-assisted tomography (CT) scanner. "This was the first time that researchers trained not in the medical sciences but in mathematics and engineering received the Nobel Prize in Medicine" (Grolier Medical Hundred, p. 365).</p><p>Cormack, who was educated as a physicist, first became interested in axial tomography in 1956, when, as the only nuclear physicist in Cape Town, S.A., he was asked to spend several hours each week supervising the use of radioactive isotopes at the Cape Town hospital. He became interested in determining values of attenuation coefficients for X-rays, realizing that these values could be displayed as a gray-scale image of internal anatomy. "Recognizing the problem as a mathematical one, [Cormack] produced a solution, using a desktop calculator, and was able to conduct experiments in which he reconstructed accurate cross sections of an irregularly shaped object. His reconstructions were, in essence, the first computed tomograms, but though he realized that his method could be used to produce cross-sectional X-ray images, no working machine designed for such a purpose was attempted, probably because of the limitations of the computers of the early 1960s" (Magill, The Nobel Prize Winners: Physiology or Medicine, III, 1325). Cormack&#39;s paper is a foundation document of digital image processing. Grolier Medical Hundred, 100(n). </p>

Lorri. Original Illustrations to 4 poems by George Macbeth.

Galleria Arco d'Alibert, Rome 1964 - Folio.Original red cloth, with two mounted panels. Contains 4 original colour lino paintings by Lorri, each one signed in the margin of the image by Lorri in pencil and additionally signed and dated out-side the image. No.1/24 copies, signed and dated by Lorri, additionally signed in ink by Macbeth on the front-endpaper. Sewn, the sewing now perished and the block detached, covers and end-papers affected by damp with some mottling and discolouration. The boards are somwhat warped also as a result of damp. The lino paintings are all in fine condition. Lorri, born in Australia in 1927, studied sculpture at Technical College in Melbourne, and exhibited there and in London, before moving to Roma in 1955, where she began to paint. She has married to the writer B. R. Whiting. She has been living in Orbetello since 1992.Born in Australia but an inhabitant of Italy for the past fifty years, she has worked principally of the sea (she is a passionate sailor) which are astonishly powerful and evocative and quite unlike that of any other artist one can think of. Words are often inadequate to describe the emotions or explain the power of visual art and Lorri is the first to believe her work should speak for itself, rather than be wrapped up in mystifying language, as it was when she first exhibited in London in 1961. Trained as a sculptor, much influenced by futurists and the ideas of Buckminster Fuller, her work has remained consistent in both its themes and methods. Unlike the collage of, say, Kurt Schwitters, with his use of found objects, or the Czech artist Jiri Kolar, with his playful reworking of photographs, Lorri remains, like so many twentieth century painters, concerned with the ambiguity of the painting as both object and window. Paper is first painted or printed, then torn into triangular strips, the reassembled, to produce jagged images at once abstract in their appeal and discernably figurative in their content, arresting the eye by the surface texture, then drawing the viewer inwards, perhaps towards a boat dwarfed by a huge sky or a flock of flying seabirds, yet also conveying through the uninhibited use of colour (principally blues and reds) a raw emotional power. Lorri&#146;s work is demonstrably the product of great thought and feeling, harnessed to a technique sufficiently adaptable to convey just what she wishes us to see and feel, without the onlooker ever thinking he is being manipulated, and surely that is what we both desire and expect of the best art.
