In Shel Silverstein's popular tale of few words and simple line drawings, a tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade provider, and apple bearer for a rambunctious little boy. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy, but with time it becomes more challenging for the generous tree to meet his needs. When he asks for money, she suggests that he sell her apples. When he asks for a house, she offers her branches for lumber. When the boy is old, too old and sad to play in the tree, he asks the tree for a boat. She suggests that he cut her down to a stump so he can craft a boat out of her trunk. He unthinkingly does it. At this point in the story, the double-page spread shows a pathetic solitary stump, poignantly cut down to the heart the boy once carved into the tree as a child that said 'M.E. + T.' "Printed by the Neighborhood Arts Program/ S.F. Art Commission" vertically along right edge. No examples located in OCLC and in our experience any non sound recording material related to the Tape Center is scarce. When the San Francisco Tape Music Center moved to its most significant location at 321 Divisadero in 1963, cofounder Morton Subotnick invited dancer Anna Halprin to move her Dancers' Workshop into extra space at the center. "It was no accident that Halprin shared the Divisadero space, since she used Tape Music Center Composers and they used her and her dancers." Halprin says of the arrangement: "It was a wonderful time for a kind of Bauhaus type of experimentation by multidisciplinary artists working together. As a matter of fact, that word 'multidisciplinary art" was really invented during that period." Founded in 1962, The San Francisco Tape Music Center (later the Mills College Tape Music Center) was at the forefront of experimental electronic music on the West Coast. The Center grew out of an improvised music studio created by composers Ramon Sender, Terry Riley, Pauline Oliveros, and others. The original mission was to form a "nonprofit cultural and educational corporation, the aim of which was to present concerts and offer a place to learn about work within the tape music medium." The mission later expanded to include electronic pieces that could be performed live with light projections and interactive tape systems. In 1966 the center moved to Mills College, where it was renamed the Center for Contemporary Music with a roster of students and faculty that was (and continues to be) a Who's Who of the musical avant-garde including Steve Reich, Anthony Braxton, and Iannas Xenakis.  Refs.: Thomas Holmes. Laid in is a corner stitched, three page Staff and Crew list, with two name additions in holograph red ink on the second page.Included is a vintage studio still photograph from the film.An early draft, issued nearly two years prior to the film's October 1965 release, with substantial differences from the finished film.The sister film to "Dr. Strangelove," and in the eyes of many, just as much a masterpiece of exquisitely wrought black humor. Made in the US, but in a dense, British-American style. Author's 1st book, written when she was 22. 1st Edition stated and 1st printing (of around 4000 copies) in a 1st issue dustjacket with 10/64 at bottom of front flap and priced at $4.95. Laid into the book is a Near Fine+ (very few signs of having been mailed) small sealed envelope stamped and postmarked 1989 in Minneapolis MN. A small printed article about Ms. Tyler's career is pasted on the left front side, a very small address label to NJ lower right corner, and the author has SIGNED her name to the envelope between the article and the address label. The book is Fine: unread, very tight and straight with no edgewear or soiling, the publisher's upper page edge stain is fine, and the gilt spine lettering is bright and complete though of a rather glittery variety instead of today's flat, even gilt painting. The cloth at the top of the book's spine is just a tiny bit flexible but not limp or crushed. The Near Fine+ price intact dustjacket is clean, crisp, has none of the usual spine fading or dulling, with no chips or soiling. It has 2 tiny closed edge tears (upper and lower front panel near the spine) that have been sealed on the reverse side, and a sharpened pencil-tip sized light tan spot lower rear, near the outer edge.; 8-1/4" x 5-3/4"; 266 pages; Signed by Author, 10, 20, F/NF, LOC 64-19103

Ben-GurionMrs. Mark Gerald[Envelope with typed address:] Mrs. Mark Gerald, / Mahane David, / Hacarmel, / HAIFAHistorical BackgroundIn 1953, Belle Chernuskin Gerald began a drive to erect a Statue of Peace on Mount Carmel in Haifa as a gift from the American people to Israel, much as the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French people to the United States. In 1958, an American Committee for Statue Shalom was incorporated as a nonprofit in California, and the campaign hoped to raise $100,000 for a 120-foot stainless steel statue by sculptor Meniamino Benvenuto Bufano (1890-1970) of "Rachel and her children," the children to represent different races. The American Christian Palestine Committee also adopted Statue Shalom as a special project. Regional subcommittees organized in other areas, such as one in Florida in 1966.In 1961, Senators Jacob Javits of New York, Philip A. Hart of Michigan, and Gale W. McGee of Wyoming announced that they would serve as co-chairs of a committee to raise $2 million for an illuminated pillar on a site to be donated by the City of Haifa. In the face of opposition by the Jewish Agency for Israel and other bodies, Haifa withdrew its promise. The Geralds then obtained a pledge of approximately 12 acres from a Druse village southeast of Haifa on Mount Carmel. A cornerstone-laying ceremony, scheduled for November 11, 1963, was canceled when the Druse elders withdrew their offer. The proposed statue, and the costs, had grown substantially. The plans were for a 300-foot bronze candle, designed as an abstract version of the word "Shalom" in Hebrew characters.[4] It would sit over a complex of buildings, including a concert hall, convention chamber, religious chapels, and a restaurant at a cost of $5 million.A January 10, 1964, article in the Jewish Post of Indianapolis declared that Belle and Mark Gerald's Statue Shalom project was "meeting everything but peace." In the face of opposition in Israel, the Geralds "have vowed to devote the rest of their lives to bring about construction of the tower." Critics, however, believed the monument was a luxury Israel could not afford when faced with costs of defense and the integration and education of immigrants.[5]Belle Gerald was then living in Israel and contacting Israeli leaders like former Prime Ministers David Ben-Gurion and Moshe Sharett (1894-1965). From 1961 to 1965, Sharett was also the chairman of the executive committee of the Jewish Agency for Israel, a position which Ben-Gurion had held from 1935 to 1948. On July 1, 1964, Ben-Gurion wrote to Gerald from Sdeh Boker, "I would not dare to diminish your enthusiasm and faith in Statue Shalom. You are expected to be here on.Wednesday afternoon." It isn't clear what particularly Ben-Gurion is disagreeing with in this letter.The saga continued for a decade more. In 1971, Isadore Hamlin of the World Zionist Organization wrote to Irving Bernstein of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) regarding the fundraising drive, "This matter has a long and painful history. Mrs. Gerald and a few others tried some years back to stampede everybody in Israel and in the United States into launching this project. Mrs. Gerald has distinguished herself by her unpleasantness, obstreperousness and lack of any sense of reality. Of all priorities for Israel, this is by far one on the lowest rung."       Prague: DILIA, 1964. Octavo (19.6 × 14 cm). Original decorative wrappers; 223, [1] pp. A very good copy. The first appearance of any work by Samuel Beckett in Czech was this translation of the absurdist and existentialist play, distributed for private use by literary and theatre professionals by DILIA, the Czechoslovak literary and theatre agency. Expressly marked "not for sale" ("Neprodejný text"). This is the first printing (second and third runs, with variant colored wrappers, were published due to large demand, but in relatively low numbers, given the caveat of the book being a purely internal, non-commercial publication). The first regularly distributed edition of Beckett's work had to await the end of the "Normalization" period, a period of strict political control which followed the short intermezzo of the liberal Prague Spring of the 1960s, and could only be published in 1986. Nevertheless Beckett was quite influential in Communist Czechoslovakia, impacting playwrights such as Vaclav Havel. The translator, Jiří Kolář, was one of the most important post-war artists, a pioneer of the collage medium, and a key advocate of concrete poetry. KVK and OCLC only show the copy at the Czech National Library.

      E. W. Kornfield, Bern 1964 - 29 x 41 cm (11.4 x 16.125") lithograph printed in color on recto and verso. One of Indiana's two contributions to '1¢ Life' featuring a red mouth with stencil typography on one side and an appropriated magazine ad alongside Ting's poetry on verso. One of the more memorable pages from this elaborate artists' book edited by Sam Francis and published by E. W. Kornfield in 1964.
