        Killer in the Rain

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1964. First edition. Fine/Fine. A Fine copy in like dust jacket. A lovely copy of the book without wear in a bright, fresh dust jacket with pinpoint wear at the lower spine, otherwise flawless. This collection of Raymond Chandler short stories from the 30s and early 40s, many from the famed Black Mask magazine, was released after his death. In fact, Chandler did not want the collection published during his lifetime because he had re-used many elements of these stories in his longer novels. In addition to the titular story, the collection includes tales such as "The Man Who Liked Dogs", parts of which were featured in "Farewell, My Lovely," and "The Curtain," which was re-purposed in "The Big Sleep" and "The Long Goodbye." "Raymond Chandler's pulp novelettes [stand high above the rest of the season], to some extent "cannibalized" in his novels but still important in their own right." (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Fine. dust jacket.

        Farnham's Freehold (Review Copy)

Putnam, New York 1964 - Uncommon review copy with original letter from GP Putnam Publicity Director dated 8/21/64 extolling the book, and a seperate insert dated 9/23/64. Book would be fine except for a bump on the top of one board and slight softening to top spine tips. Very slight discoloring to inside FEP. Gold gilt bright and intact on spine and cover. Pages are clean and white and crisp, as is the binding. Dust jacket has light edgewear and a 3/4" closed tear to front top. A very nice copy of this book. Not price clipped, shows $4.95 on inside flap. Heinlein's grimmest book by far. Written near the heighth of the atomic war fear. Farnham builds a fallout shelter and when the alarms go off the family and a friend hide in the shelter, seal it, and feel a strange distortion and the solid concrete shelter slides DOWN. When they open the hatch, it's resting on a hillside thousands of years in the future. White people are all slaves or Aborigenes. Black people rule small underground kingdoms where hydroponics supply the only available food, they are intelligent, elegant, high tech, and cannibals. Farnham survives, finds romance, and even a sympathetic Ruler who sends him back in time with his mate rather then eat him. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Manuscript]: The Blind Doe and Her Faun

[1964]. Six drafts plus additional materials for an article that was written for and appeared in the May 5, 1964 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. The drafts are various formats (mostly typed) and lengths of pages, respectively 10, 15, 5, 11, 7, and 9 pages. Each of the drafts is edited and corrected, most of them fairly extensively. Apparently a true and autobiographical story, but with the names of the participants changed. While deer hunting the author encounters a blind doe and her fawn. He takes them in tow, and through his employer, the deer is shipped to a specially trained veterinarian for an eye operation. Accompanied by over 50 pages of typed "interrogatories," probably from an editor or fact checker in order to better understand the story, though possible by the author in order to understand his own process. The accompanying material includes two snapshots of the deer. Carousso was a public relations man for a brewery, and was a very prolific author in both non-fiction genres (especially sporting, hunting and fishing) and various genres of fiction including mysteries, horror, suspense, and outdoor adventure. His work appeared frequently in The Saturday Evening Post as well as in Sports Illustrated, Outdoor Life, Dime Detective, Terror Tales, Alfred Hitchcock, Reader's Digest, etc. Much of his work was anthologized. One of his stories, "The Weapon," was adapted for the screen by William Faulkner and Howard Hawks for their aborted WWII film, Battle Cry. .

New York: Harper & Row. (1964). First. Uncorrected galley proof. Spiral bound cut galley sheets printed rectos only in publisher's wrappers with a printed information sheet attached to the front wrap. Spirals have broken, and pages are thus disbound, poor. Signed by John Cheever. A very unusual format, the long galley sheets have been cut and in a few places pieced together with tape. The second and final of the Wapshot novels, which are similar in tone and format to Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha trilogy. The first book, The Wapshot Chronicle, won a National Book Award. Rare.         Hans Sachs, Werke. - Reprint.

Hildesheim: Georg Olms Verlagsbuchhandlung 1964-1982.. A fine clean copy in a VG pictorial dustwrapper which has one closed nick at foot of rear panel. LIMITED EDITION, Number 1182 of 3000 copies. The important Catalogue Raisonne of Paul Gauguin's work covering the period 1871 - 1903, all fully documented and all but 8 lost works illustrated and concordance with Gauguin's own data for the years 1888-1889. Paul Gauguin was born in Paris in 1848, the son of a journalist. He began his career in the merchant navy and then in 1871 became a stockbroker; he also took up painting. His early works are influenced by Pissarro, with whom he worked in 1879 and 1881. He showed works in the later Impressionist exhibitions (1880-6), subsequently developing the style known as Synthetism during visits to Pont-Aven in Brittany (1886-90). In 1888 he worked briefly with Van Gogh in Arles. Gauguin was faced with increasing poverty after retiring from stockbroking in 1883 and in 1891 he left Paris to work in Tahiti, where many of his most famous paintings were produced ('Nevermore', 1897, London, Courtauld Institute Galleries). He returned to Paris in 1893, but in 1895 went back to the South Seas and in 1901 moved to the Marquesas Islands, where he died in 1903. Public recognition of his talent came posthumously with an exhibition of his work in Paris in 1906. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
