The Kuwait Urbanization. Documentation Analysis Critique.

[Kuwait, Kuwait Government Printing Press, 1964]. - Folio. LXXII, 646 pp. Inscribed by the author. - As the first Arab urban planner in Kuwait, Saba George Shiber (1923-68) recalled an Arab identity for the development of the Central Business District. Through numerous newspaper articles and conference papers, later compiled in this publication. Shiber expressed his divergence from the means of production implemented by European experts during their previous years in the country. By that time, architecture served as a medium to render the ideal in the construction of a nation; it became the framework and the element which supported the "the Man of Kuwait".

The Kuwait Urbanization. Documentation - Analysis - Critique

Kuwait: Kuwait Government Printing Press,, 1964. Quarto. Original yellow card wraps printed in red and black. 20 coloured plates, numerous black and white illustrations from photographs on coated paper and also to the text. Wraps a little rubbed, particularly on the spine and joints, front joint started at the tail, else very good. First edition. Attractive and uncommon publication collecting documentation relating to the development of Kuwait during the 1960s. An American citizen of Lebanese origins, "Saba Shiber is little known today, although not completely unknown. His name means little to most Arab planners, even though he was one of the first major figures to preach the cause of the Arab town planning" (Nasr, "Saba Shiber, 'Mr. Arab Planner'. Parcours professionnel d'un urbaniste au Moyen-Orient", in Géocarrefour, 80/3, 2005). An apostle of urban planning in Arab countries "rather than a practitioner of the discipline", he sought to inspire the creation of an entirely modern, but specifically Arab urbanism. This copy of the book has two copies of a 1:5000 scale folding map of Kuwait City (opening 418 × 560 mm) issued by the Ministry of Guidance & Information, Division of Tourism, loosely inserted, one copy somewhat stained verso with some bleed, but overall very good.

Thelonious Monk, Original Vintage 1964 German Concert Poster,

Thelonious Monk, Original Vintage Concert Poster, "Thelonious Monk Quartet", Robert-Schumann-Saal, Dusseldorf [Germany], Sunday February 16, 1964, produce by George Wein and R. Schulte-Bahrenberg, designer Heribert Brunhubber's imprint to bottom left corner. A1 Format, (23 3/8" by 33 ½"/ 59.3 cm by 85.7 cm), near fine, the poster has not been folded, verso is clean and unmarked, tiny closed tears to top left and lower right margin, shallow creasing to top corners, touch of edge wear. Making his third trip to Europe in 1964, Monk was riding high on the success of recent recordings for his new label Columbia, including Criss-Cross and Monk's Dream which would become the bestselling album of his lifetime. On Feb. 28 1964, days after this concert, he became just the fourth jazz musician to appear on the cover of Time magazine. With elegant typography, printed on thin fragile paper stock, a beautiful, spare, poster produced for the Monk Quartet's 1964 German concert appearances, scarce thus, particularly with the venue imprint, and in collector's condition. J1929.
