Le desert rouge [Il deserto rosso, Red Desert] (French poster for the 1964 film)

Rome: Film Duemila, 1964. French poster for the 1964 Italian film,"Il Deserto Rosso" (released in France as Le Desert Rouge, and in the US and UK as "Red Desert"), directed by Michelangelo Antonioni and starring Monica Vitti. Antonioni's first color film was the ambitious follow up to the trilogy that began with "La Avventura." While continuing the theme of dislocation in the modern world that pervaded his earlier work, "Red Desert" is soaked in reds and blues, making it a sharp contrast to the black and white films.         Manuscript]: The Blind Doe and Her Faun

1964 - Six drafts plus additional materials for an article that was written for and appeared in the May 5, 1964 issue of *The Saturday Evening Post*. The drafts are various formats (mostly typed) and lengths of pages, respectively 10, 15, 5, 11, 7, and 9 pages. Each of the drafts is edited and corrected, most of them fairly extensively. Apparently a true and autobiographical story, but with the names of the participants changed. While deer hunting the author encounters a blind doe and her fawn. He takes them in tow, and through his employer, the deer is shipped to a specially trained veterinarian for an eye operation. Accompanied by over 50 pages of typed "interrogatories," probably from an editor or fact checker in order to better understand the story, though possible by the author in order to understand his own process. The accompanying material includes two snapshots of the deer. Carousso was a public relations man for a brewery, and was a very prolific author in both non-fiction genres (especially sporting, hunting and fishing) and various genres of fiction including mysteries, horror, suspense, and outdoor adventure. His work appeared frequently in *The Saturday Evening Post* as well as in *Sports Illustrated, Outdoor Life, Dime Detective, Terror Tales, Alfred Hitchcock, Reader's Digest,* etc. Much of his work was anthologized. One of his stories, "The Weapon," was adapted for the screen by William Faulkner and Howard Hawks for their aborted WWII film, *Battle Cry.*

Dinny Gordon Junior [with] Original Dust Jacket Art

Philadelphia: Macrae Smith. (1964). Original gouache and pencil cover art for Dinny Gordon Junior by illustrator Evelyn Copeman depicting the winning teen ingenue smiling up at an all-American boy. The image measures approximately 7" x 8.5" (on 13" x 20" artist board). It is accompanied by a clear overlay with the title and author's name affixed, a sheet of tissue paper with various notes for the printer, and additional blank sheet with a warning about handling the original art, once attached to the board by tape but now loose. The art is fine and bright; the other items showing some toning from the tape, along with a few spots and a couple of tears. It is accompanied by a fine third printing of the book in an else fine price-clipped dustwrapper. In the article Dinny Gordon: Proto-Feminist, that appeared in the March 2006 issue of the Journal of American Culture, writer Joyce Litton posits that Anne Emery's most beloved character, Dinny Gordon, who had aspirations of a nontraditional career and delayed marriage, was a transitional character between the portrayal of the 1950s female in family life and the more enlightened feminist of the mid-to-late 1960s. While it's a little hard to tell from the jacket art, this volume has Dinny confronting not only the typical teen problems such as liking two different boys and losing her job as a result of a shoplifting incident, but also confronting the prejudice of her friends when a Jewish family moves into her neighborhood. Take that, Gidget. .

New York McGraw Hill 1964 - FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED WITH WARM PRESENTATION FROM THE AUTHOR, DAVID ROCKEFELLER, TO R. BUCKMINSTER "BUCKY" FULLER. Signed and dated December 4th, 1964. 8vo, original orange/brown cloth lettered in yellow on the upper cover and in yellow and black on the spine, in the original dustjacket. ix, 84pp. A very good copy, just a bit of mellowing to the jacket, with Fuller’s shelf label affixed to the bottom of the spine of both book and jacket. Pencil notation, possibly Fuller’s, on the front of the jacket. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM ONE OF THE 20TH CENTURY’S MOST FAMOUS MEN OF FINANCE AND BUSINESS TO ONE OF THE CENTURY’S GREAT RENAISSANCE MEN, BUCKMINSTER FULLER, American systems theorist, architect, engineer, author, designer, inventor, and futurist. Rockefeller and Fuller had a long and sometimes hostile association. At the time of this inscription Rockefeller was chairman of Chase Manhattan. Fuller often accused the financial world of Wall Street, and David Rockefeller by name, of downgrading and selling out American Ingenuity. However, from other quotes it is also clear Fuller considered him a genius. If there was animosity between them it is clearly not evident from this inscription, it reads "With deep admiration and warm regards." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Candy / first state, signed by Terry Southern

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1964 New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1964. Signed by Terry Southern on the title page, without inscription. First Edition with all first state points, those being - on Jacket: James Jones blurb instead of Nelson Algren's at bottom of back panel; $ 5.00 price; code 0464, bottom of front flap. Book: purple cloth, black paper boards; no statement of printing (later editions do state printing); 5.75" x 8.25", 224 pp.; red endpapers and topstain. A Very Good book in a Near Fine jacket. Book shows some discoloration to top page edges, and a 5% lean (see scan); also very faint touch of fade at top edges of the boards. Jacket is first state and not clipped, still bearing the $ 5.00 price, and really shows no damage to call out, a solid Near Fine example of a jacket which has often suffered grade-loss easily. A nice "flat" signed (no inscription), First Edition, First State example of the somewhat tardy American re-do of Southern's original (under the pseudonym Maxwell Kenton)through the Olympia Press in Paris in 1958 -which was itself chased and marked for destruction by French authorities. Almost startlingly timeless because of its theme and Southern's execution of it, Candy was not only made into a movie (dir. Christian Marquand, 1968, Ewa Aulin as Candy, with John Astin and many others; screenplay by Buck Henry), but was the seminal source of a rogue's gallery of pirate editions and spin-offs of the same title and others. The story of a naive and gorgeous young blonde girl - who quickly finds out in exactly what way we men are all, instantly and always, the same - borrows its plot from Voltaire's Candide and uses that strangely juxtaposed vehicle to shine a light on all the vagaries of modern western life which beg to be lampooned. Considered by many to be a classic of "black(dark) humor". An extremely nice copy of a title that is en route to becoming royalty. L65
