Paul Gauguin : [I] Catalogue Raisonne. (All Published).

Paris: Les Beaux-Arts: First edition 1964 - large 4to., [xvi], 282pp., mounted colour frontispiece (Te Rerioa - le Reve), text in french, 630 b/w illustrations, catalogue, indices, original red cloth decorated in gilt. A fine clean copy in a VG pictorial dustwrapper which has one closed nick at foot of rear panel. LIMITED EDITION, Number 1182 of 3000 copies. The important Catalogue Raisonne of Paul Gauguin's work covering the period 1871 - 1903, all fully documented and all but 8 lost works illustrated and concordance with Gauguin's own data for the years 1888-1889. Paul Gauguin was born in Paris in 1848, the son of a journalist. He began his career in the merchant navy and then in 1871 became a stockbroker; he also took up painting. His early works are influenced by Pissarro, with whom he worked in 1879 and 1881. He showed works in the later Impressionist exhibitions (1880-6), subsequently developing the style known as Synthetism during visits to Pont-Aven in Brittany (1886-90). In 1888 he worked briefly with Van Gogh in Arles. Gauguin was faced with increasing poverty after retiring from stockbroking in 1883 and in 1891 he left Paris to work in Tahiti, where many of his most famous paintings were produced ('Nevermore', 1897, London, Courtauld Institute Galleries). He returned to Paris in 1893, but in 1895 went back to the South Seas and in 1901 moved to the Marquesas Islands, where he died in 1903. Public recognition of his talent came posthumously with an exhibition of his work in Paris in 1906. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"Rare Autograph Letter Signed ?Alger Hiss,? 1.5p, 6.75? x 9.75?, front & verso. New York, August 10, 1964. To historian Dr. [James T.] Shotwell (1874-1965). Fine condition.Dr. Shotwell served as a private consultant to the U.S. State Department in 1945. When Alger Hiss was granted a leave of absence as President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to fight his court battle against Whittaker Chambers in 1948, Shotwell was elected President. In part, ?In recent years I have refrained from writing to you ?" in the absence of any indication as to whether such an initiative might be welcome. But your recent 90th birthday seems to present the occasion for a restatement of my affection and admiration, an occasion of such moment as to obviate scruples over niceties of restraint ... I recall, often, the period of our close association with pleasure, pride and a lively realization of the inspiration and insights I gained from our collaboration....?"

La Chine et L'Occident: Le Commerce a Canton Au XVIIe Siecle (1719 - 1833) [Tomes I, II, III, et Album]

S.E.V.P.E.N., Paris 1964 - A good+ copy of the first edition of the rare four-volume complete set (Tomes I, II, III, and the Album). This copy belonged at one point to Professor Raymond de Roover of the History Department of Brooklyn College (each volume bears his discreet name-stamp on the front endsheet), and laid in to Tome I is a letter from James Baughman , managing editor of the (Harvard) Business History Review, requesting a review. Very light marginal pencil notatations on approximately 24 pages of each of the three main volumes (Tomes I, II and III), although the Album volume (of maps, diagrams and photographs) is unmarked. Very minor age-discoloration of the pages, which are still quite supple to the hand. Minor spotting, surface abrasions, and fraying at the extremities of all volumes; volume II has a water stain on the front cover panel, though the interior pages are unaffected. Tome III and the Album bear the small stamp "Service de Presse" atop the front cover. All in all a lovely copy of this increasingly hard-to-find title. The scan provided is of the spines of all four volumes; other scans available upon request. [Please note: Due to the size and weight of the set extra shipping may be required depending on the destination and speed of delivery requested. Quotations gladly provided.         One day after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, Richard Nixon signs a letter thanking a publishing magnate for his compliments on his address at the 1964 Republican National Convention, and encloses a reprint of his Reader's Digest article on Vietnam: "Needed in Vietnam: The Will to Win"

"Typed Document Signed ?Dick?, on his personal stationery, 1 page, 7.25? x 10.5?. New York, August 3, 1964 to James S. Copley, founder of the Copley Press concerning his recent speech at the 1964 Republican National Convention as well as his thoughts concerning the ""The Will to Win"" in Vietnam. Expected folds, else fine condition. Nixon writes, ""I want you to know how much I appreciated your writing as you did with regard to my speech at the Republican Convention. While I did not speak from a prepared text, I had some reprints made of the transcript in order to fill requests for copies, and I am enclosing one for your file."" Nixon adds in a postscript: ""In view of the fact that Vietnam will probably be one of the major issues in the up-coming campaign, I thought you might also be interested in a reprint of an article which appears in the August issue of Reader's Digest.""The letter is accompanied by Nixon's aforementioned enclosure: a reprint from the August, 1964 issue of Reader?s Digest, ""Needed in Vietnam: The Will to Win"" (8 pages, 5? x 7.5?). Nixon's critique of American policy in Southeast Asia came at a critical juncture. On August 2, 1964 the U.S.S. Maddox engaged three North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. The attack resulted in the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution with gave Lyndon Johnson the legal justification for deploying U.S. forces against North Vietnam. Nixon's 1964 address before the Republican National Convention appealed for unity within the G.O.P. Barry Goldwater's nomination in 1964 alienated many moderate Republicans, including most notably Nelson Rockefeller of New York and George Romney of Michigan. Conversely, Nixon, also considered a moderate within the party, actively supported Goldwater's campaign, going as far as securing Dwight D. Eisenhower's valuable endorsement for the Republican nominee. During the fall campaign, Nixon took a leave of absence from his lucrative New York law practice to barnstorm for Goldwater, spending five weeks travelling through thirty-six states. Nixon's support for Goldwater paid off (though not for the Arizona Senator who lost to Lyndon Johnson in one of the most lopsided presidential elections in American history). Soon after Lyndon Johnson's inauguration in January 1965, Goldwater publically praised Nixon's support, despite the fact that the two differed greatly on many policy issues. In 1968, Goldwater would return the favor, actively martialing conservative support behind Nixon's successful presidential bid."

Le desert rouge [Il deserto rosso, Red Desert] (French poster for the 1964 film)

Rome: Film Duemila, 1964. French poster for the 1964 Italian film,"Il Deserto Rosso" (released in France as Le Desert Rouge, and in the US and UK as "Red Desert"), directed by Michelangelo Antonioni and starring Monica Vitti. Antonioni's first color film was the ambitious follow up to the trilogy that began with "La Avventura." While continuing the theme of dislocation in the modern world that pervaded his earlier work, "Red Desert" is soaked in reds and blues, making it a sharp contrast to the black and white films.         Manuscript]: The Blind Doe and Her Faun

1964 - Six drafts plus additional materials for an article that was written for and appeared in the May 5, 1964 issue of *The Saturday Evening Post*. The drafts are various formats (mostly typed) and lengths of pages, respectively 10, 15, 5, 11, 7, and 9 pages. Each of the drafts is edited and corrected, most of them fairly extensively. Apparently a true and autobiographical story, but with the names of the participants changed. While deer hunting the author encounters a blind doe and her fawn. He takes them in tow, and through his employer, the deer is shipped to a specially trained veterinarian for an eye operation. Accompanied by over 50 pages of typed "interrogatories," probably from an editor or fact checker in order to better understand the story, though possible by the author in order to understand his own process. The accompanying material includes two snapshots of the deer. Carousso was a public relations man for a brewery, and was a very prolific author in both non-fiction genres (especially sporting, hunting and fishing) and various genres of fiction including mysteries, horror, suspense, and outdoor adventure. His work appeared frequently in *The Saturday Evening Post* as well as in *Sports Illustrated, Outdoor Life, Dime Detective, Terror Tales, Alfred Hitchcock, Reader's Digest,* etc. Much of his work was anthologized. One of his stories, "The Weapon," was adapted for the screen by William Faulkner and Howard Hawks for their aborted WWII film, *Battle Cry.*
