A Confederate General from Big Sur

NY: Grove Press. (1964). His first novel, after several small press poetry collections. Signed by Brautigan, with a drawing of a trout, and dated September 11, 1966. Brautigan's writings influenced an entire generation and, although he fell out of literary favor for a time -- culminating in his suicide in 1984 -- there was a resurgence of interest in his writings as he came to be seen as an American original whose whimsy, sensitivity and humor uniquely epitomized his time. Confederate General was issued by maverick publisher Barney Rosset, whose Grove Press had recently released long-banned works by such writers as Henry Miller, D.H. Lawrence, and William Burroughs, and who had published the Beat writers successfully, most especially Jack Kerouac. Brautigan's book did not find its target audience readily, and Grove, which had planned to publish his next novel, Trout Fishing in America, canceled the publication. Slight offsetting to the endpages and a little bit of foxing to the top edge; near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some top edge creasing to the rear panel. First Edition. Hardcover.

Three Lobby Cards for the film "A Hard Day's Night

1964. unbound. Three 11 x 14-inch lobby cards for the 1964 United Artists film "A Hard Day's Night" from the original set of 8 (64/261). The first of the three cards features a classic image of The Beatles on stage, the second depicts the group dancing, and the third shows a group shot of the "Fab Four" standing in front of a train. After 50 years, all three lobby cards still possess their original richness in color with absolutely no fading or partial toning that is common to the issue. The first card has a minor surface crease at the top left margin. The third card has two half-inch corner creases at the top left corner and the bottom right corner. All three lobby cards are in their original unrestored condition and, incredibly, are free of pin holes and tape remnants. A scarce offering in near fine condition.

Senator Harry F. Byrd TLS [Civil Rights Studies Interest]

Harry F. Byrd and Malvin C. Weaver 1964 - (Autograph Documents & Letters, Government & Law, Virginiana) Nine TLS [Typed Letters Signed] from Senator and former Virginia governor Harry F. Byrd to Malvin C. Weaver of Weaver Brothers, Inc. of Newport News, Virginia. Dated between 1951 and 1964. Each of Senator Byrd?s responding TLS are paired with carbon or hand-written copies of Weaver?s letters as well as some relating speech copies or newspaper clippings. Toning and edge wear with some tears and chips. Some pages stapled. Very Good condition collection overall. Harry F. Byrd served as a Virginia state senator, governor, and later as United States senator and for forty years led the Democratic political machine known as the Byrd Organization. By virtue of both his service and power, he was one of the most prominent Virginians of the twentieth century. Much of his power was wielded in mostly vain opposition to the New Deal's big-government programs and the civil rights legislation of the 1960s. As governor he instituted a popular downsizing of state government that increased efficiency, but the end of his career was marked by his now-infamous 'massive resistance' to federally mandated school desegregation which led to many Virginia schools closing rather than be forced to integrate. Other than general expressions of campaign support their correspondence references the Taft-Hartley law and the AFL?s League for Political Education; the FHA scandal; the Federal Budget and deficit spending; some race relations topics such as concerns over NAACP and desegregation; and the death of Mrs. Byrd.         Exceedingly Rare Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Appointment

Washington, DC, June 1, 1964 Partly Printed Document Signed ?Lyndon B. Johnson? as President, 1 page, 23? x 18.75?. Mounted on quality rigid poster board of the same size. Blind-embossed 3.5?-diameter U.S. Seal affixed at lower left. Countersigned ?George W. Ball? as Acting Secretary of State. Fine condition. In part, ?Know Ye, that reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity and Ability of William H. Perkins, Jr., of Illinois, I do appoint him a Member of the Armed Forces Museum Advisory Board of the Smithsonian Institution for a term of six years ...? He was reappointed by Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan. William H. Perkins, Jr. (1922-2009) had served on the 1961 and 1965 Presidential Inaugural Committees. He was a lifelong lobbyist, first for the Continental Casualty Company where he arranged the insurance coverage for President Kennedy?s inauguration. Authentically signed Lyndon B. Johnson presidential appointments are exceedingly rare. In the last 45 years, only six have appeared at major public auctions and three of the six were from the Estate of Arthur J. Goldberg referring to U.N. appointments. Of these six documents, we are not certain how many we would feel are not authentically signed.

[Vgl. Fluxus. Eine lange Geschichte mit vielen Knoten. Overall a very nice and scarce set of an important work.

        Actions / Agit-Pop / De-Collage / Happening / Events / Antiart / L'autrisme / Art Total / Refluxus. Festival der neuen Kunst, 20. Juli 1964, Aachen, Technische Hochschule.

Köln. Selbstverlag T. Schmit. 1964.. 1. Auflage. 4°. Titelblatt + 14 Blatt. OBroschur, Klammergeheftet. Juli 1964. Typed Letter, signed ("John Connally") to Jack Brown, of Oakland, California, regarding the trial of Jack Ruby in Dallas, his rights to appeal the verdict, his right to appeal for clemency, etc

Austin, Texas, 1964. One page, on official stationery. 4to. Fine. In green cloth chemise. One page, on official stationery. 4to. Governor Connally and the Trial of Jack Ruby. On March 14, 1964, Jack Ruby was convicted by a Dallas jury of murder with malice for the killing of the alleged assassin of JFK, Lee Harvey Oswald. Barely 10 days later, Governor Connally of Texas, who himse3lf was wounded in the Presidential limousine during the attack on JFK, responds to comments on Ruby and his trial in this very interesting letter: "Under the laws of this State [...] all persons convicted of a crime have the right to appeal if they feel any error was committed in the trial. I understand such an appeal to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is planned. If a defendant is dissatisfied with the decision of that Court, he is entitled to appeal to the United States Supreme Court. "After a conviction has become final, any appeal for clemency must first be made to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles [...] If the Board of Pardons and Paroles recommends that I grant any type of clemency in this case, I can assure you that I will give it the most careful and studied consideration ..." Ruby did indeed, successfully appeal his trial, and on October 5, 1966, an appellate court ruled that Ruby's motion for a change of venue before the original trial court should have been granted. Ruby's conviction and death sentence were overturned, but before a new trial could be held Ruby died in prison of cancer. [with:] a TLs to Brown from Assistant Attorney General Herbert J. Miller (under AG Robert Kennedy), Washington, DC, March 23, 1964, explaining the Federal Government'a lack of jurisdiction in the trial of Ruby.

With 5 original prints laid in at front including one color lithograph, one drypoint and 3 aquatints, each numbered in pencil "175/245." With reproductions of 38 plates from the 1949 edition of Carmen. 1 vols. 4to. Wrappers. In drop box. Number 175 of 245 copies on Arches paper (total edition 275), signed by Picasso & Louis Aragon on the colophon. With 5 original prints laid in at front including one color lithograph, one drypoint and 3 aquatints, each numbered in pencil "175/245." With reproductions of 38 plates from the 1949 edition of Carmen. 1 vols. 4to. Carmen: the muse of muses. Of all Picasso's muses - Fernande, Olga, Marie-Thérèse, Dora, Françoise, Genevieve, and Jacquline - the fictional Carmen, Gypsy temptress from Seville, was as powerfully inspirational as any of his flesh and blood wives and mistresses. The artist's fascination with Carmen was part of his extended and imaginative quest to comprehend the nature of tragic love. The mythic and mysterious heroine, immortalized by Prosper Merimée's novella (1845) and George Bizet's opera (1875), was a significant figure for Picasso from his earliest days as an artist. In Picasso's renderings Carmen appears both as icon and the subtle beauty of the artist's imagination.

The Kuwait Urbanization. Documentation Analysis Critique.

[Kuwait, Kuwait Government Printing Press, 1964]. - Folio. LXXII, 646 pp. Inscribed by the author. - As the first Arab urban planner in Kuwait, Saba George Shiber (1923-68) recalled an Arab identity for the development of the Central Business District. Through numerous newspaper articles and conference papers, later compiled in this publication. Shiber expressed his divergence from the means of production implemented by European experts during their previous years in the country. By that time, architecture served as a medium to render the ideal in the construction of a nation; it became the framework and the element which supported the "the Man of Kuwait".

The Kuwait Urbanization. Documentation - Analysis - Critique

Kuwait: Kuwait Government Printing Press,, 1964. Quarto. Original yellow card wraps printed in red and black. 20 coloured plates, numerous black and white illustrations from photographs on coated paper and also to the text. Wraps a little rubbed, particularly on the spine and joints, front joint started at the tail, else very good. First edition. Attractive and uncommon publication collecting documentation relating to the development of Kuwait during the 1960s. An American citizen of Lebanese origins, "Saba Shiber is little known today, although not completely unknown. His name means little to most Arab planners, even though he was one of the first major figures to preach the cause of the Arab town planning" (Nasr, "Saba Shiber, 'Mr. Arab Planner'. Parcours professionnel d'un urbaniste au Moyen-Orient", in Géocarrefour, 80/3, 2005). An apostle of urban planning in Arab countries "rather than a practitioner of the discipline", he sought to inspire the creation of an entirely modern, but specifically Arab urbanism. This copy of the book has two copies of a 1:5000 scale folding map of Kuwait City (opening 418 × 560 mm) issued by the Ministry of Guidance & Information, Division of Tourism, loosely inserted, one copy somewhat stained verso with some bleed, but overall very good.
