        FOR THE UNION DEAD

New York: Farrar , Straus and Giroux, 1964. 1st edition, full green cloth, with illustrated dust jacket. Specially signed by Lowell on the half title page in blue ink. Title-page and dust jacket are illustrated with a drawing by Francis Parker. The text is a collection of thirty-five poems, including "The Scream" which Lowell states "owes everything to Elizabeth Bishop's beautiful, calm story, 'In the Village' " (taken from the author's Notes). The title poem, one of Lowell's most recognized, is set in the Boston Commons. The present offering is one of Lowell's most recognized titles, and was a finalist for the National Book Award (1965) in poetry. Only the slightest hint of age toning to the FEP, and the complete (not price clipped) jacket shows very minimal wear. A most desirable copy, and quite uncommon signed.

        Manuale tipografico

The Gospel According to St. Matthew [Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo] (Original photograph of Pasolini on the set of the 1964 film)

Italy: Arco Films / Lux Compagnie Cinématographique de France, 1964. Vintage single weight photograph of director Pier Paolo Pasolini and crew on the set of his 1964 film, "The Gospel According to St. Matthew," by photographer Angelo Novi. A magnificent shot, capturing the immediacy of the crew (and a philosophically distracted Pasolini) as well as the panorama of the Fosso Castello Waterfalls in Soriano nel Cimino, Italy. In the valley below, near the waterfall, the cast can be seen performing the baptism of Christ. With Angelo Novi's stamp and a press agency stamp on the verso, along with other notations.Typically offbeat Pasolini touches included having Satan disguise himself as a Catholic priest, along with the casting of the director's own mother as the Virgin Mary. The music is selected from a variety of sources, from Bach to American spirituals. Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo" was released in the US as "The Gospel According to St. Matthew," much to the discomfort of Pasolini, who didn't want Matthew designated as a saint.8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine.

Le Mort. 2 Vols. (Complete) 1/10 COPIES [WITH ORIGINAL COPPER PLATE, ORIGINAL DRAWING AND ADDITIONAL ETCHINGS ALL SIGNED BY ANDRE MASSON]

Au Vent d'Arles, Paris 1964 - Oblong folio. [4], LVII, [11]. Original full vellum, bevelled edges. Title blind-stamped to upper panel and black lettering on spine. One of only 10 de luxe copies, containing 9 etchings with color aquatint, one original signed drawing by André Masson and an original copper plate, the latter inserted into the front cover. Limitation page signed by André Masson. With an additional suite of 9 hand-colored etchings, plus one refused, all signed by Masson, laid into publisher's vellum spine over beige cloth boards. Each etching protected with a tissue-guard. Volumes housed in original leather edged beige cloth slipcase. Bataille's final erotic text, in which he crystallises his central notion of "érotisme" (the logical end of eroticism is death), into a harrowing story. It is boldly and somewhat abstractly illustrated, as was his first erotic fiction "Histoire de l'Oeil" by his friend and long-time collaborator André Masson. Slight rubbing to edges of slipcase. Minor soiling on spines. Closed surface tears along inner front joint of main volume, firmly holding. Sporadic and minor offsetting on pages (not affecting plates). Text in French. Slipcase in overall good, bindings in good+ and interior in very good condition (with plates in fine condition). About the author: Georges Bataille (1897-1962) was a French writer. Although several philosophers have been significantly influenced by his thought, Bataille tended not to refer to himself as a philosopher. Founder of several journals and literary groups, Bataille is the author of an oeuvre both abundant and diverse: readings, poems, essays on innumerable subjects (on the mysticism of economy, in passing of poetry, philosophy, the arts, eroticism). He sometimes published under pseudonyms, and some of his publications were banned. He was relatively ignored during his lifetime and scorned by contemporaries such as Jean-Paul Sartre as an advocate of mysticism, but after his death had considerable influence on authors such as Michel Foucault, Philippe Sollers, and Jacques Derrida, all of whom were affiliated with the journal Tel Quel. His influence is felt in the work of Jean Baudrillard, as well as in the psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

You Only Live Twice (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape. 1964 [actually issued late 1963]., 1964. An UNCORRECTED PROOF copy of the first edition. In printed green wrappers and the pictorial dust-jacket, stamped 'Proof Only' etc. on inside front flap, with minor variations to the blurb on rear flap over the published version. A fine copy of the book; oversize jacket has some expected wear/creasing to the unsupported area along the top edge, some ribbing at joints and spine, colour remains fresh. An attractive copy, preserved in an elegant quarter leather clamshell box. One of just 500 copies. The proof copy features numerous typographical (rather than textual) mistakes which were corrected in the published book, notably the preface is missing, the verso of the half title has the erroneous title 'On Her Mjsty's Scrt Srvic[]' listed, the copyright page omits both the publisher's address and the papermaker and binder's credit, the contents page does not have italicised sub-titles to pts.I and II , the chapter 'Magic 44' appears in square caps, the 'author's note' leaf is an extra, and the final leaf is numbered 256. There are numerous punctuation and typeset differences unworthy of specifying here. The last title in what has become known as the 'Blofeld' trilogy. Gilbert A12a.

[Print]: Take It Easy But Take It!

Print or broadside. Approximately 14" x 19". Slate print, printed in silver-white on black textured rag paper. A little creasing at the corners of the textured paper, slight remnants from mounting on rear, else near fine. Number 17 of 500 copies Signed by the artist and dated in 1964. Additionally Inscribed in the wide lower margin: "Dear Dave - The Middlefield Show is a success - financially & publicity-wise. Thanks for your help. Bill Kent. Oct. 1964." The image depicts a faux-classical couple: he with a long beard and a tail, in a priapic state of arousal, reaching underneath the long skirt of a woman dangling a cat-like animal from one hand. Kent was a critically acclaimed artist in the 1960s. He exhibited at the 1966 Whitney Biennial, and apparently drew some comparisons to Andy Warhol. However, the scandal created by his 1965 exhibition of slate prints, "Sex and Violence, Or Patriotic Prints," which caused him to lose his job as a curator, combined with his irascible character and contempt for the commercial art world, led him to leave the city to follow an ascetic path. He pursued the construction of monumental wood sculptures which have been compared to Brancusi, but he is now largely, but unjustifiably, forgotten. This print displays a sly and engaging pop aesthetic. .

        Ode to a Highflying Bird

London; Beat Publications. 1964., 1964. FIRST EDITION. Original white paper-covered boards, printed in black. 12mo. With colour illustrations. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. Shows some handling, and a little edgewear. Very good. Housed in a protective buckram case, titled in gilt to spine. A decent copy of a particularly elusive book. (not to be confused with the 1991 facsmile which was issued in a CD boxset, identical to this first edition but for the imprint amended from 'Beat' to 'UFO'). Rolling Stones' drummer and Jazz afficianado Charlie Watts' charming tribute to his hero, saxophonist Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker, which takes the form of an illustrated poem.

        KOREAN OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING [Cover Title]

np, [ca. 1964]. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. 4to. 14 ring hardcover binder measuring approximately 12" x 10". 13 pages containing 64 original black and white photographs. 55 snapshots, most 4.5" x 3.5", though many cut smaller; 8 in 8" x 10" format, 7 of which feature the same subject. Several ephemeral articles and clippings also present. Binder awkwardly rebacked with tape at spine and bearing a title hand written in thick black marker to the front cover. Photographs mounted to black adhesive pages, covered in clear plastic sheet overlays. All contents very good+ or better. Photo scrapbook belonging to John A. England of Lenexa, Kansas. The album records his coaching of the Korean national weightlifting team, including competitions at the 1962 Asian Games (held in Jakarta) and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Dozens of clear snapshots show athletes in training. Ephemera consists of articles, clippings, a First Day Cover cachet from the '62 games, a program from a 1963 weightlifting competition, and a TLS of thanks to England from Byung Sook Suh, President of the Korean Weightlifting Association. Most striking is a series of six different 8" x 10" enlargements showing a buff, young Korean lifter in many classic bodybuilding poses (right). A stirring collection of the male physique.
