Americans on Everest. The official account of the ascent led by Norman G. Dyhrenfurth.

J.B. Lippincott Company,, Philadelphia, 1964 - Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Company, 1964. 24 cm x 16 cm. XXI, 429 pages. Original Hardcover with dustjacket. With several black-and-white pictures. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Jacket slightly torn. In protective mylar. Signed and inscribed by 4 members of the expedition. James Ramsey Ullman (1907 – July 5, 1971) was an American writer and mountaineer. He was born in New York. He was not a high end climber, but his writing made him an honorary member of that circle. The books he wrote were mostly about mountaineering and geography. His works include Banner in the Sky, which was a book based on the true story of the first climbing of the Matterhorn (it was filmed in Switzerland as Third Man on the Mountain), and The White Tower (which would star Glenn Ford and Lloyd Bridges). Also Americans on Everest by James Ramsay Ullman, page 195, published by J. B. Lippincott Company 1964, Library of Congress Catalogue #64-14475. He was the ghost writer for Tenzing Norgay's autobiography Man of Everest (originally published as Tiger of the Snows). High Conquest was the first of nine books for the J.B. Lippincott company coming out in 1941 followed by The White Tower, River of The Sun, Windom's Way, and Banner in the Sky which was a 1955 Newbery Honor book. All of these titles became small motion pictures. He also wrote the short story "Top Man", a story about mountaineers climbing K3, a mountain in India. The story appears in several anthologies. It was originally published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1940. Issue #35. Beyond his mountaineering books, he wrote "Where the Bong Tree Grows," an account of a year he spent traveling through some of the most remote islands of the South Pacific. Ullman also wrote a novel about the poet Arthur Rimbaud, The Day on Fire (1958). He joined the American Mount Everest Expedition 1963 as official historian. Because of health problems he had to stay in Kathmandu. His book Americans on Everest: The Official Account of the Ascent was published in 1964. He died in Boston from cancer on July 5, 1971.         Autograph Letter Signed on "Gigot" stationery showing Kelly as director and Jackie Gleason as star, 4to, n.p., May 18, 1961

To Jay Kanter, Hollywood agent, Vice-President of MCA Artists, Inc.   Gene Kelly was on location in Paris, filming "Gigot," a film based on an original story of Jackie Gleason who starred in it and which was produced by Kenneth Hyman.   He writes to his agent, "Just a short note from all us Parisians to all you Californians, mainly to say 'hello' and tell you you ]sic] that everything is going very well so far and the project looks most interesting. Gleason has been wonderful to work with, and Stark and Hyman have given me nothing but the finest treatment." He asks for news from Beverly Hills, if there is "anything further on Mrs. Midas," and "what was that little hint you dropped me about some kind of acting job...." The Gene Kelly filmography suggests that if Kanter did have a job lined up for him, it could have been the 1964 film, "What a Way to Go!" or the 1966 "Les Demoiselle de Rochefort," both of which starred Kelly.   Ray Stark mentioned above, was a Hollywood agent who, with Eliot Hyman founded Seven Arts Productions in 1957. Seven Arts is the production company associated with "Gigot." They produced "Lolita," "Two for the Seesaw," and many other films.   Kelly closes with "Jeanne and I send our love..." and signs, "Gene." He refers to his wife, Jeanne. "On August 6, 1960, Gene Kelly's personal life took a decided upswing, as he married for the second time. His new wife was an old friend, his long-time dance assistant, Jeanne Coyne.

        Barefoot in the Park.

Random House, New York 1964 - First edition of the playwright's first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Signed by Neil Simon on the title page. Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He's a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she's a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find-too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie's loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic Velasco, where everything that can go wrong, does. Paul just doesn't understand Corie, as she sees it. He's too staid, too boring and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous, running "barefoot in the park" would be a start. "A bubbling, rib-tickling comedy." (The New York Times) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

THE MILK TRAIN DOESN'T STOP HERE ANYMORE

(Norfolk, CT):: New Directions,. 1964.. First edition, second state with pp.19-22 tipped in and scene two starting on p.21. SIGNED by Williams on the title page. In his 1963 review of the original version of the play, Howard Taubman notes: A terrified comic ferocity courses through Milk Train but the play generates little pity. By the standards of other lesser playwrights this is impressive work. By Mr. Williams's criteria it is disappointing because its resolution is hard to credit. The play was completely rewritten for the version appearing herein but after again receiving poor notices, ran for only 5 performances. Touch of rubbing to spine ends, otherwise fine in like dust jacket with only light creasing and tiny nick to top front corner. .

GROPE - Vol. One No. One (Jan. 1964) [and] Vol Two No. One [with] THE BLOWN MIND

New York: Tibor de Nagy Editions / Sherwood Publishers / New York Express, 1964-1966. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. 4to. illustrated stapled wraps all. Mild handling wear, trace soiling. Each sound, clean. THE BLOWN MIND numbered (this #25) and SIGNED by both Yampolsky and Fleming to interior of front cover. Very good. Complete run of these scarce but related publications, produced by Forakis, Yampolsky, and / or Fleming (all artists better known for other media) under various imprints. In the first issue of GROPE, each contributes one work or “story” utilizing the conventions of the comic (panels, word balloons, etc.), but all non-narrative and veer- ing towards the completely abstract, psychedelic and/or nonsensical. GROPE No. 2 is authored by Forakis alone, while THE BLOWN MIND is a collaboration between Yampolsky and Fleming. The methods, however, remain the same, and the motifs and styles of each work clearly pre- figure the work of later underground comic artists. These works are therefore among the earliest weÂ’ve seen to exhibit a non-commercial, “underground” aesthetic (albeit mixed with a fine art influence). Indeed, the publication of Issue No. 1 of GROPE predates by at least several months what is generally considered the first underground comic: Jack JacksonÂ’s GOD NOSE (which though printed the same year was clearly published sometime after January). And though none of these issues quite demonstrates the over-the-top subversive quali- ty one typically associates with the underground, all three clearly exhibit a prescient style that would soon come to fuller fruition in R. Crumb and others. Rare as a set. While weÂ’ve had a few issues of Grope #1, this is the first time weÂ’ve encountered either of the two later issues.

Haarremu No Aki [A Harlem Autumn]

Tokyo: Tokyo Broadcasting System, 1964. Near fine overall.. First Edition. Quarto. Large spiral-bound photographic album. Collection of 80 mounted black and white photographs, taken by members of the Tokyo Broadcasting System during production of a documentary about Harlem for a Japanese television program. The crew based their narrative on a family in Harlem, and followed the family's friends and associates for a period of 52 days. The photographs document a wide range of social interaction: intimate moments with the family, boxing matches, Halloween parades, street scenes, and even drug use. Taken together, the photographs provide a complex and unsentimental portrait of Harlem's successes and failures, as well as an incredible snapshot of early 1960s New York City. The album concludes with 16 photographs of the crew in Hawaii, perhaps on their return journey. In addition, an additional photograph and small archive of Japanese language postcards and letters are laid in, the letters showing a return address to 41 W 86th Street, NYC.

[Photograph of Jackie Kennedy and John Jr. in Palm Beach, 1963]

New York: Mark Shaw, (1964). Very good. Original vintage double-weight black and white photograph. Paper size 14" x 11" with an image area of approximately 10.5" square. Mild handling wear. Small stain to upper left of image. Layout mark to margin. With photographer's stamp, dated 1964, to verso. Very good. A wonderfully candid image of Jackie Kennedy and son, John Jr., on vacation in Palm Beach, FL -- the trip on which she announced her pregnancy with their third child, who died just after birth. Printed by the photographer, Mark Shaw, in 1964. Shaw extensively photo- graphed the Kennedys and was their preferred photographer. He went on to be a close family friend - a fact belied by this image's inti- macy. This photo appeared in Shaw's book THE JOHN F. KENNEDYS, pub- lished shortly after John's death in 1963.

        Delights and Prejudices.

Atheneum, New York 1964 - First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by the author on the half title page, "Good eating James Beard." Fine in a very good dust jacket with light wear to the spine tips. In this culinary journey, James Beard takes us back to the earliest days of his childhood when he started developing his precocious palate and lifelong "taste memories"--the ability to savor and remember the tastes and sensations of food. His enthusiasm for flavors, no matter how bold, would define Beard for the rest of his life. From devouring a raw onion as an infant to scouring the globe in search of local flavors as an adult, Delights and Prejudices is full of witty and illuminating stories that open a door into the world of one of America's first and perhaps greatest epicures. Packed with more than one hundred fifty recipes, including corn chili souffl?, fried oysters, and peach preserves, this very personal account of his life is as close to an autobiography as Beard ever penned.         THE SONNETS

[New York]: Lorenz & Ellen Gude, 1964. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. Side-stapled 4to. mimeo. Cover by Joe Brainard; offset duplicated. Very good with the usual toning, mild edgewear. Some scuffing to covers. Soil here and there. Final leaf loose at two staples, but holding. Lacking rear cover and terminal blank (as in many copies and given specific provenance of this item - see below - we suspect many were issued this way). [66] leaves mimeographed rectos only. PROVENANCE: Izzy Young's copy, with his contemporary ownership inscription to last page: "Israel G. Young, December 1964, from Ed Sanders." Young was a central figure throughout the 1960s NYC music and literary scenes. He founded the Folklore Center, produced Dylan's first concert in 1961 (Dylan even wrote a song for/about him, "Talking Folklore Center"), and was close to Sanders, helping to print several titles from from his Fuck You Press on the mimeo machine at the Center. Edited by Ron Padgett (who also typed the stencils), this remains the definitive statement of the Second Generation of the New York School as well as Berrigan's most influential, popular, and lasting work - a measure of which can be seen in the fact that it is the only major American collection of the last fifty years to go through four sepa- rate editions, each at different publishers. From an edition of "300 plus an unspecified number of unnumbered copies" (Fischer p. 24), this is from the unnumbered series, estimated (by Berrigan himself; again see Fischer) to be about 100.

Autograph Letter Signed [ALS] mentioning In Cold Blood

New York: np. First edition. Very Good. Outstanding autograph letter by Capote to his friend William Gray, proudly announcing that his masterpiece, In Cold Blood is nearing completion. Written on Capote's letterhead with his name embossed in all caps on the upper left margin, the letter reads: Dear Mr. Gray - Bless you for writing me such a kind letter! I greatly appreciate your interest and tender concern. The fact is, I have been working, and working steadily and single-mindedly, on a new book for the past five, almost six years. Now it is almost finished. The title is: 'In Cold Blood'; it is quite a long book (for me), and I think it is good-and I hope you will too. Again, thank you. I am a most fortunate writer to have a reader-friend like you. [signed] T. Capote 12 November 1964 Capote worked for nearly seven years on his masterpiece, In Cold Blood. "So immense was the stress of the editorial undertaking... that Capote became addicted to tranquilizers and developed an emotional attachment to the criminals, whose deaths by hanging he witnessed at the Kansas state penitentiary" (American National Biography). In Cold Blood first appeared as a four-part serial in The New Yorker beginning with the September 25, 1965 issue (approximately 10 months after this letter was written). The recipient, William S. Gray, was a professor of literature and active member of the American literary circles of the 1950s and 60s. In the 1950's, Gray was introduced to Truman Capote by Tennessee Williams and the two developed a close friendship. (Gray was one of the invitees to Capote's celebrated Black and White Ball in 1966, the so-called "Party of the Century".) One leaf (7x10 inches), both sides, on Capote's personal letterhead. Original folds, a few spots of soiling. With original envelope addressed in Capote's own hand and an (unsigned) later publicity photo of Capote. Letters by Capote explicitly mentioning In Cold Blood are very rare.
