[Print]: Take It Easy But Take It!

Print or broadside. Approximately 14" x 19". Slate print, printed in silver-white on black textured rag paper. A little creasing at the corners of the textured paper, slight remnants from mounting on rear, else near fine. Number 17 of 500 copies Signed by the artist and dated in 1964. Additionally Inscribed in the wide lower margin: "Dear Dave - The Middlefield Show is a success - financially & publicity-wise. Thanks for your help. Bill Kent. Oct. 1964." The image depicts a faux-classical couple: he with a long beard and a tail, in a priapic state of arousal, reaching underneath the long skirt of a woman dangling a cat-like animal from one hand. Kent was a critically acclaimed artist in the 1960s. He exhibited at the 1966 Whitney Biennial, and apparently drew some comparisons to Andy Warhol. However, the scandal created by his 1965 exhibition of slate prints, "Sex and Violence, Or Patriotic Prints," which caused him to lose his job as a curator, combined with his irascible character and contempt for the commercial art world, led him to leave the city to follow an ascetic path. He pursued the construction of monumental wood sculptures which have been compared to Brancusi, but he is now largely, but unjustifiably, forgotten. This print displays a sly and engaging pop aesthetic. .

A Beatles dress worn by a programme seller at the World Premiere of A Hard Day's Night, London Pavilion, 6 July

1964. White linen dress printed with turquoise and black, featuring portraits of the four Beatles above their facsimile signatures and a musical stave with the title lyrics from "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". Signed across the front in blue ink by each of The Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, and by their manager Brian Epstein. The premiere of the Beatles debut film A Hard Day's Night was attended by the Beatles and their wives, as well as guests of honour Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon. The premiere was a charity event and the film was shown in aid of the Variety Club Heart Fund and the Dockland Settlements Charity, an organisation which established and ran youth clubs and community centres for the residents of the more deprived areas in the East End of London. This dress was one of a very few items of clothing provided to the 12 teenage programme sellers, including Philippa Whitaker who has written an accompanying letter informing how she was given the dress and subsequently got it signed at the reception later that evening by the Beatles. Together with a photograph of Philippa wearing the dress.

Richard Nixon shakes hands and inscribes and signs a photograph with ???best personal regards??? to prominent New York Jewish leader, Judge Louis B. Heller

n.p., c. 1964. 8" x 10". "Photograph Signed ???To Louis B. Heller / with best personal regards / from / Dick Nixon.??? Adequate contrast. Black & white, 8??? x 10???. Information form stamped on verso, filled out and signed by the photographer. Minor flaws. Fine condition. First Generation photograph, probably unpublished. Information on verso handwritten and signed by photographer ???Jay Sharp.??? In full, ???Annual Dinner Brooklyn Bar Association / Hotel St George / Dec. 2,1964 / Former Vice President of the United States,/ Richard K. [sic] Nixon / The Honorable Louis B. Heller.??? Prominent Jewish leader Louis Benjamin Heller (1905-1993) had represented Brooklyn in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1949 until he resigned in 1954 when he was appointed an Associate Justice of the Court of Special Sessions of New York City. He served until 1958 when he was elected a Justice of the City Court of the City of New York (1958-1966), and later Judge of the Supreme Court of the State of New York (1966-1977). A month before Nixon posed with Heller for this photograph at the Annual Dinner of thbe Brooklyn Bar Association, the Republican Party had suffered its worst presidential defeat since FDR beat Alf Landon in 1936 with 60.8% of the popular vote and 98.5% of the electoral vote. On November 3, 1964, LBJ had defeated Republican Barry Goldwater with 61.1% of the popular vote and 90.3% of the electoral vote. Richard Nixon was setting his eyes on the 1968 presidential election. Politics came first, ahead of personal prejudices later revealed in the Watergate tapes:In a June 13, 1973, conversation with secretary Rose Mary Woods, Nixon discussed the entertainment at an upcoming event, listing entertainers Johnny Mann and Debbie Reynolds, then Nixon asks about Danny Kaye, ???and not because of his ideology.??? Woods replies, ???Well they were going to try to get him but?????? Nixon interrupts, asking ???He???s Jewish???? Woods ignores him, continuing, ???I don???t know what happened whether?????? Nixon interjects again: ???He???s Jewish.??? Woods explains, ???They had to check him out with the Russians.???In an April 19,1973, conversation with Henry Kissinger, who is Jewish, about an upcoming U.S.-Soviet summit, to which Nixon thought Jewish groups might object, Nixon said, ???Let me say, Henry, it???s gonna be the worst thing that happened to Jews in American history. If they torpedo this summit ??? and it might go down for other reasons ??? I???m gonna put the blame on them, and I???m going to do it publicly at 9 o???clock at night before 80 million people.??? (???I agree completely,??? Kissinger responded. ???They brought it on themselves.???) Nixon continued: ???I won???t mind one g-ddamn but to have a little anti-Semitism if it???s on that issue. They put the Jewish interest above America???s interest and it???s about g-ddamn time that the Jew in America realizes he???s an American first and a Jew second.â? From the Collection of Louis B. Heller."

N.p. : S.i., [1964]. Two original illustrations, rendered in pen & ink and gouache on paper, measuring 7 7/8" x 6 1/8" and 8" x 6" respectively. Light wear to extremities, several old tape marks to verso; Near Fine, showing no discernable flaws to image area. Variant illustration tastefully and archivally matted. Offered together with a Fine First Edition of William F. Nolan's Nolan On Bradbury: Sixty Years of Writing about the Master of Science Fiction (Hippocampus Press, 2013). Original (variant) and preliminary illustration created by Mugnaini for the limited edition chapbook of Bradbury's classic tale The Pedestrian, published by Roy Squires in 1964 (280 copies). Undoubtedly Mugnaini's original concept for the chapbook's interior illustration, evidenced by a preliminary sketch which was also preserved by Bradbury. Differing in mood from his illustration of the story in The Golden Apples of the Sun, here Mugnaini creates a more suitable landscape for Bradbury's brief glimpse into a bleak dystopian future. Unknown until their inclusion in Bradbury: An Illustrated Life (2002), both drawings remained in the author's personal collection for the rest of his life. Nearly 50 years later, William F. Nolan chose the variant illustration as the cover art for his book Nolan On Bradbury, a homage to his life-long friend and colleague. The Pedestrian, originally published in The Reporter magazine in 1951, is one of Bradbury's most enduring stories. He chose it as the one representational example of his work to be included in Timeless Stories of Today and Tomorrow (Bantam Books, 1952), for which he served as editor. In subsequent years it has been reprinted in numerous genre anthologies, digests and magazines. Clearly one of Bradbury's personal favorites, he would adapt it for the stage (The Pedestrian - A Fantasy in One Act. Samuel French, 1966) and later for television (The Ray Bradbury Theatre in 1989). Perhaps the reason the story still resonates with readers is best explained by Bradbury in his introduction to his collection Bradbury Stories: 100 of His Most Celebrated Tales (2005): "The Pedestrian was a precursor to Fahrenheit 451...a few months later I took that pedestrian for a walk in the night, had him turn a corner and meet a young girl named Clarisse McClellan. Nine days later, Fahrenheit 451 was born as a short novella called The Fireman." Provenance: From the Estate of Ray Bradbury and the author's personal collection.

Document Signed by President LYNDON B. JOHNSON Appointing American Composer, Conductor, Teacher, and Pianist LEONARD BERNSTEIN to become a "Member of the Commission on Presidential Scholars"

1964 - JOHNSON, LYNDON B. (1908-1973). 36th president of the United States. DS. ("Lyndon B. Johnson"), countersigned by Secretary of State DEAN RUSK (1909-1994) ("Dean Rusk"). 1p. Folio. Washington, May 23, 1964. The appointment of American composer, conductor, teacher, and pianist LEONARD BERNSTEIN (1918-1990) to become a "Member of the Commission on Presidential Scholars." In 1964, by executive order, President Johnson established the United States Presidential Scholars Program to foster excellence and to recognize outstanding high school seniors. The commission was comprised of university presidents and educators, author Katherine Anne Porter, and Leonard Bernstein, who was on a year-long sabbatical from the New York Philharmonic. Bernstein's national stature as a force in education grew out of his popular "Young People's Concerts" series begun in 1958, which set out to increase young people's interest in and enjoyment of music. Our appointment bears the blind-stamped paper Seal of the United States and is mounted onto a stiff sheet; a fine and uncommon association. * All our items are sent via Federal Express. You will never regret it -- and the nation will benefit from the experience you gain.""
