[Print]: Take It Easy But Take It!

Print or broadside. Approximately 14" x 19". Slate print, printed in silver-white on black textured rag paper. A little creasing at the corners of the textured paper, slight remnants from mounting on rear, else near fine. Number 17 of 500 copies Signed by the artist and dated in 1964. Additionally Inscribed in the wide lower margin: "Dear Dave - The Middlefield Show is a success - financially & publicity-wise. Thanks for your help. Bill Kent. Oct. 1964." The image depicts a faux-classical couple: he with a long beard and a tail, in a priapic state of arousal, reaching underneath the long skirt of a woman dangling a cat-like animal from one hand. Kent was a critically acclaimed artist in the 1960s. He exhibited at the 1966 Whitney Biennial, and apparently drew some comparisons to Andy Warhol. However, the scandal created by his 1965 exhibition of slate prints, "Sex and Violence, Or Patriotic Prints," which caused him to lose his job as a curator, combined with his irascible character and contempt for the commercial art world, led him to leave the city to follow an ascetic path. He pursued the construction of monumental wood sculptures which have been compared to Brancusi, but he is now largely, but unjustifiably, forgotten. This print displays a sly and engaging pop aesthetic. .

        Russia, Mongolia, China

Burt Franklin, NY 1964 - Being some record of the relations between them from the beginning of the XVIIth century to the death of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich ad 1602-1767. Rendered mainly in the form of narratives dictation or written by the envoys sent by the Russian Tsars of their Voevodas in Siberia to the Kalmak and Mongol Khans & Princes and to the emperor of China. With introductions historical and geographical. Also a series of maps showing the process of geographical knowledge in regard to northern Asia during the XVIth VXIIth and XVIIIth centuries. The texts taken more especially from manuscripts in the MOscow Foreign Office Archives. 2 volumes Vol 1: 365 pp (in Roman numerals), index, errata, addenda, tables, maps, pocket maps, ill. Index. Vol 2: 443 pp Maps. The lengthy index was compiled by the noted authority on Chinese Turkestan, DC Boulger. In 1906 Baddeley made the first of several long journeys to and through Russia. For the next 10 years compiled copious notes, much from previously unavailable sources, on the histories of these three fascinating countries. Then for three more years he worked on compiling the documents into what has become known since that time as a cornerstone work on the history and historical geography of Russia, Mongolia and China. The profusion of splendid illustrations and maps adds to the enjoyment of this well written work which contains much fascinating information found in no other volume ever compiled. It stands alone as one of the best conceived travel and exploration works ever written. A lovely near fine set. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Physiologus Bernensis.

Original. Softcover. Good- (Tear to head of spine, handwritten inscription in INK on front cover [what was she thinking!?], age toning to white card wraps, and art museum ex-lib. plate; contents quite good and with no extraneous marks, tears, chips, toning, etc.). Plain white card wraps, stapled. Dj of lavender and white paint (looks to be original/unique) and large, black lettering. Multiple sky blue end papers. 28 pp. with bw images. Text in French. Catalogue from the exhibition, Mythologies Quotidiennes (Daily Mythologies), held at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, July to October 1964. With an introductory essay by Gassiot-Talabot, the catalogue of 115 works, and advertisements. "The exhibition in July 1964 at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris marks the symbolic beginning of the movement known as Narrative Figuration. Organized by artists Bernard Rancillac and Herve Telemaque and critics Gérald Gassiot-Talabots and Marie-Claude Dane, the exhibition reveals every artist's pure and formalistic "statement." Willingly using the grotesque, humor, and derision, these painters introduce the presentation with successive scenes or by juxtaposition or transformation of images. This movement began when abstraction was declining and comics, film and photography emerged as arts in their own right. Mythologies Quotidiennes features 34 artists who, like their American counterparts, put contemporary society and its images at the heart of their work. But, unlike their American counterparts, their work is more social and political." Artists included are Alleyn, Arnal, Arroyo, Atila, Berni, Bertholo, Bertini, Bettencourt, Beynon, Brusse, Buri, Cremonini, Dado, Fahlstrom, Foldes, Gaitis, Geissler, Gironella, Golub, Gracia, Kalinowski, Klasen, Kramer, Monory, Pistoletto, Rancillac, Faynaud, Raysse, Recalcati, Requighot, Saint-Phalle, Saul, Telemaque, and Voss. The woman who inscribed the catalogue to the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) on the front cover was Mrs. H. Fahnestock, the wife of millionaire Harris Fahnestock. Mrs. Fahnestock had her own wealth, was a philanthropic society lady, and annually paid any and all debts of the Boston Symphony. The exact nature of the catalogue cover is a subject which begs more research. It is certainly an original artwork for this publication, but the artist and the edition size remain unknown.

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT: ORIGINAL HAND-COLORED PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTWORK USED TO PRODUCE PROMOTIONAL LOBBY CARD #10

United Artists 1964 - The Beatles "A HARD DAY'S NIGHT" Hollywood: United Artists, (c. 1964). Original vintage hand-tinted double-weight still photograph used to produce promotional A HARD DAY'S NIGHT U. S. release Lobby Card #10. This high-resolution double-weight flat matte 8" x 10" production photo was printed in black and white in preparation for the creation of the now familiar 11" x 14" promotional color lobby card then hand-tinted; registration marks and color directions written in grease pencil can be seen on the photo itself. This lobby card artwork showcases one of the more detailed of the lobby cards in the set, featuring Paul McCartney in disguise (hiding from screaming Beatles fans) accompanied by Wilfred Brambell who plays his creepy trouble-making grandpa. In Very Good condition, lightly worn. The reverse is a bit aged and smudged. The film A HARD DAY'S NIGHT was directed in 1964 by Richard Lester and was rather a low budget operation, shot in black-and-white, and used a zany cinema-verite style to showcase a few days in the life of Beatlemania. At the time it was meant to be the equivalent of a promotional film, few anticipated that the film would end up being acclaimed a comedy classic. For roughly the same price as a fine example of the original lobby card itself, you can own the original art that made it. Ex- Heritage Poster Auction #601 (March 2004)

Köln. Selbstverlag T. Schmit. 1964. 1. Auflage. 4°. Titelblatt + 14 Blatt. OBroschur, Klammergeheftet. Juli 1964. [Vgl. Fluxus. Eine lange Geschichte mit vielen Knoten.         Pesci.

1964 - Firma in basso a destra dell’artista.

        Sometimes a Great Notion.

New York: The Viking Press, 1964. First edition, first issue with the publisher's logo on the half title page. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Well, yeah this period does look a little better under the BULLSEYE........but not much For Jordan Ken Kesey." Light shelfwear, near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket two small closed tears. A dust jacket that is prone to wear, this is one of the nicest examples we have seen. "The novel's exquisite prose, which often reads like lyric poetry, draws us into the daily lives of the Stamper family... We've heard Sometimes described as a novel about a family feud. That's like saying War and Peace is about one of Napoleon's shorter-lived military campaigns. Each of the Stampers is a three-dimensional person, and that leads to some fun, some heartache and a great literary catharsis" (Henley, Wikelund & Lindquist, 39). It was adapted to film, starring Paul Newman.

Spontaneous Breakdown of Strong Interaction Symmetry and Absence of Massless Particles" in Soviet Physics JETP 24 No. 1 pp. 91-98, January 1967 (A Translation of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; Russian Original Vol. 51, No. 1, July 1966)

RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS AND IN ENGLISH OF THE SOVIET HIGGS MECHANISM PROPOSAL. Unlike the Higgs mechanism proposals by Higgs, Brout and Englert, and Guralnik and Hagen, the mechanism proposed by Soviet Physicists Alexander  Polyakov and Alexander Migdal is often overlooked because the publication of their paper was delayed by the bureaucratic process in the Soviet Union -- the 'referee' of the journal initially refused to publish the paper "having received negative and incorrect criticisms from some skeptical senior scientists" (Close, Frank. The Infinity Puzzle: The Personalities, Politics, and Extraordinary Science Behind the Higgs Boson, 146). Although likely unknowable as no date was given for the original submission, many in the scientific community believe that the work of Polyakov and Migdal - two 19-year-old undergraduates working entirely independent of Western scientific development - not only actually preceded that of Brout and Englert - but that in fact their work was very likely first (Close, Frank).  I n 1964 or 1965 and "in the Soviet Union, the leading solid-state theorist, Anatoly Larkin, posed a challenge to two outstanding undergraduate teenage theorists, Sacha Polyakov and Sacha Migdal: 'In field theory the vacuum is like a substance; what happens there?'   [Polyakov and Migdal] took up Larkin's challenge, and answered it, demonstrating that the quantum of radiation - the gauge boson, which starts out massless in the fundamental equations - can become massive. Senior colleagues immediately derided them as naïve. Migdal recalls: 'We were stomped to the ground at every seminar [where] we tried to present this work. The most disturbing thing was that nobody would even argue on the subject - the mere mention of 'spontaneous symmetry breaking' caused healthy laughter, which ended the conversation.   "Migdal's memoires are that they were victims of Soviet political philosophy polluting scientific thought. 'For the first time since Galileo, the quest for the structure of matter was stopped on political grounds. There is nothing inside [the proton; there has to be] total nuclear democracy - everything consists of everything else. Do not ask whether there was the rabbit inside the hat: you are only allowed to compute how far it will jump and in what direction'" (ibid).   Describing Polyakov and Migdal's isolation and methodology, in 2013 the Royal Academy of Swedish Sciences noted: "It is clear though that this paper was completely independent of the development in the West. They set up a field-theoretic framework for a non-abelian gauge theory with a scalar bound state and computed in a spontaneously broken version of the model to all orders in perturbation theory using a Bethe-Salpeter equation to find that the Nambu-Goldstone mode only interacts with virtual particles and is therefore unobservable" (The Beh-Mechanism, Interactions with Short Range Forces and Scalar Particles, Royal Academy of Swedish Sciences, 8 October 2013). "Spontaneous Breakdown of Strong Interaction Symmetry and Absence of Massless Particles" is an English translation appearing in Soviet Physics JETP 24 No. 1 pp. 91-98, January 1967. Soviet Physics JETP is: A Translation of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The Russian original appeared in July of 1966, Vol. 51, No. 1. CONDITION & DETAILS: Individual issue in original wraps. Moscow: Nauka (Science) Publishing House. New York: Translated by the American Institute of Physics. 4to (11 x 8.5; 275 x 213mm).         Barefoot in the Park.

New York: Random House, 1964. First edition of the playwright's first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Signed by Neil Simon on the title page. Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He's a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she's a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find-too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie's loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic Velasco, where everything that can go wrong, does. Paul just doesn't understand Corie, as she sees it. He's too staid, too boring and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous, running "barefoot in the park" would be a start... "A bubbling, rib-tickling comedy." (The New York Times)

        2 Autograph manuscripts „Les Mots".

      n. p. n. d. - 9 and 18 pages. 4to. Lined paper.

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT: ORIGINAL HAND-COLORED PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTWORK USED TO PRODUCE PROMOTIONAL LOBBY CARD #10

Hollywood: United Artists, 1964. The Beatles "A HARD DAY'S NIGHT" Hollywood: United Artists, (c. Ex- Heritage Poster Auction #601 (March 2004). Unbound. Very Good.

The Wine Dark Sea / Homer's Heroic Epic of the North Atlantic (SIGNED)

Self-published, Chicago, Illinois 1964 - Patent attorney Mertz, who earlier published an account ("Pale Ink") of the voyages of the Chinese to the west coast of the Americas, here offers geographic evidence that the Odyssey described by Homer took Odysseus not just to the Straits of Messina (off Sicily), but as far as Newfoundland's Bay of Fundy. While further evidence of the Chinese voyages of the early 15th Century has been forthcoming, Ms. Mertz's Homerian theory has not been widely embraced. Signed diagonally by the author -- probably in fountain pen -- to the title page. No dust jacket. A trimmed promotional sheet for the book, on heavy gray paper, has been Scotch-taped to the FFE. 180 pp. including notes and bibliography. Reduced from $1,300.
