        Sometimes a Great Notion.

New York: The Viking Press, 1964. First edition, first issue with the publisher's logo on the half title page. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Well, yeah this period does look a little better under the BULLSEYE........but not much For Jordan Ken Kesey." Light shelfwear, near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket two small closed tears. A dust jacket that is prone to wear, this is one of the nicest examples we have seen. "The novel's exquisite prose, which often reads like lyric poetry, draws us into the daily lives of the Stamper family... We've heard Sometimes described as a novel about a family feud. That's like saying War and Peace is about one of Napoleon's shorter-lived military campaigns. Each of the Stampers is a three-dimensional person, and that leads to some fun, some heartache and a great literary catharsis" (Henley, Wikelund & Lindquist, 39). It was adapted to film, starring Paul Newman.

Spontaneous Breakdown of Strong Interaction Symmetry and Absence of Massless Particles" in Soviet Physics JETP 24 No. 1 pp. 91-98, January 1967 (A Translation of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; Russian Original Vol. 51, No. 1, July 1966)

RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS AND IN ENGLISH OF THE SOVIET HIGGS MECHANISM PROPOSAL. Unlike the Higgs mechanism proposals by Higgs, Brout and Englert, and Guralnik and Hagen, the mechanism proposed by Soviet Physicists Alexander  Polyakov and Alexander Migdal is often overlooked because the publication of their paper was delayed by the bureaucratic process in the Soviet Union -- the 'referee' of the journal initially refused to publish the paper "having received negative and incorrect criticisms from some skeptical senior scientists" (Close, Frank. The Infinity Puzzle: The Personalities, Politics, and Extraordinary Science Behind the Higgs Boson, 146). Although likely unknowable as no date was given for the original submission, many in the scientific community believe that the work of Polyakov and Migdal - two 19-year-old undergraduates working entirely independent of Western scientific development - not only actually preceded that of Brout and Englert - but that in fact their work was very likely first (Close, Frank).  I n 1964 or 1965 and "in the Soviet Union, the leading solid-state theorist, Anatoly Larkin, posed a challenge to two outstanding undergraduate teenage theorists, Sacha Polyakov and Sacha Migdal: 'In field theory the vacuum is like a substance; what happens there?'   [Polyakov and Migdal] took up Larkin's challenge, and answered it, demonstrating that the quantum of radiation - the gauge boson, which starts out massless in the fundamental equations - can become massive. Senior colleagues immediately derided them as naïve. Migdal recalls: 'We were stomped to the ground at every seminar [where] we tried to present this work. The most disturbing thing was that nobody would even argue on the subject - the mere mention of 'spontaneous symmetry breaking' caused healthy laughter, which ended the conversation.   "Migdal's memoires are that they were victims of Soviet political philosophy polluting scientific thought. 'For the first time since Galileo, the quest for the structure of matter was stopped on political grounds. There is nothing inside [the proton; there has to be] total nuclear democracy - everything consists of everything else. Do not ask whether there was the rabbit inside the hat: you are only allowed to compute how far it will jump and in what direction'" (ibid).   Describing Polyakov and Migdal's isolation and methodology, in 2013 the Royal Academy of Swedish Sciences noted: "It is clear though that this paper was completely independent of the development in the West. They set up a field-theoretic framework for a non-abelian gauge theory with a scalar bound state and computed in a spontaneously broken version of the model to all orders in perturbation theory using a Bethe-Salpeter equation to find that the Nambu-Goldstone mode only interacts with virtual particles and is therefore unobservable" (The Beh-Mechanism, Interactions with Short Range Forces and Scalar Particles, Royal Academy of Swedish Sciences, 8 October 2013). "Spontaneous Breakdown of Strong Interaction Symmetry and Absence of Massless Particles" is an English translation appearing in Soviet Physics JETP 24 No. 1 pp. 91-98, January 1967. Soviet Physics JETP is: A Translation of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The Russian original appeared in July of 1966, Vol. 51, No. 1. CONDITION & DETAILS: Individual issue in original wraps. Moscow: Nauka (Science) Publishing House. New York: Translated by the American Institute of Physics. 4to (11 x 8.5; 275 x 213mm).         Barefoot in the Park.

New York: Random House, 1964. First edition of the playwright's first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Signed by Neil Simon on the title page. Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He's a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she's a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find-too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie's loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic Velasco, where everything that can go wrong, does. Paul just doesn't understand Corie, as she sees it. He's too staid, too boring and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous, running "barefoot in the park" would be a start... "A bubbling, rib-tickling comedy." (The New York Times)

        2 Autograph manuscripts „Les Mots".

      n. p. n. d. - 9 and 18 pages. 4to. Lined paper.

Hollywood: United Artists, 1964. The Beatles "A HARD DAY'S NIGHT" Hollywood: United Artists, (c. 1964). Original vintage hand-tinted double-weight still photograph used to produce promotional A HARD DAY'S NIGHT U. S. release Lobby Card #10. This high-resolution double-weight flat matte 8" x 10" production photo was printed in black and white in preparation for the creation of the now familiar 11" x 14" promotional color lobby card then hand-tinted; registration marks and color directions written in grease pencil can be seen on the photo itself. This lobby card artwork showcases one of the more detailed of the lobby cards in the set, featuring Paul McCartney in disguise (hiding from screaming Beatles fans) accompanied by Wilfred Brambell who plays his creepy trouble-making grandpa. In Very Good condition, lightly worn. The reverse is a bit aged and smudged. The film A HARD DAY'S NIGHT was directed in 1964 by Richard Lester and was rather a low budget operation, shot in black-and-white, and used a zany cinema-verite style to showcase a few days in the life of Beatlemania. At the time it was meant to be the equivalent of a promotional film, few anticipated that the film would end up being acclaimed a comedy classic. For roughly the same price as a fine example of the original lobby card itself, you can own the original art that made it. Ex- Heritage Poster Auction #601 (March 2004). Unbound. Very Good.

The Wine Dark Sea / Homer's Heroic Epic of the North Atlantic (SIGNED)

Self-published, Chicago, Illinois 1964 - Patent attorney Mertz, who earlier published an account ("Pale Ink") of the voyages of the Chinese to the west coast of the Americas, here offers geographic evidence that the Odyssey described by Homer took Odysseus not just to the Straits of Messina (off Sicily), but as far as Newfoundland's Bay of Fundy. While further evidence of the Chinese voyages of the early 15th Century has been forthcoming, Ms. Mertz's Homerian theory has not been widely embraced. Signed diagonally by the author -- probably in fountain pen -- to the title page. No dust jacket. A trimmed promotional sheet for the book, on heavy gray paper, has been Scotch-taped to the FFE. 180 pp. including notes and bibliography. Reduced from $1,300.       First US edition, Near Fine book with very slight spine roll, bumps all corners with most significant being a moderate bump/crease at bottom corner of back panel; in a Very Good to Near Fine jacket that has slight edge and corner wear, with the bump/crease at back corner, the spine is lightly sun toned, thewhite back panel has mild soiling. The jacket is an unusual, early state with prices at both corners of the unclipped front flap, $2.95 at top and $3.00 at bottom. The Macmillan US edition was printed in the UK, in a small print run that was far less than the Jonathan Cape first UK printing, and most jackets either had the $2.95 clipped or later showed just the $3.00 price at lower corner. The 1964 film based on the book was the third James Bond movie (following Dr. No and From Russia with Love) and was the first to win an Academy Award (Sound Effects). The film starred Sean Connery, Honor Blackman, Gert Frobe and Shirley Eaton and was a critical success.

?They really should be in the National Gallery!" (Jackie Kennedy) - 1st Edition of The John F. Kennedys, inscribed by acclaimed Kennedy family photographer Mark Shaw to Kennedy supporter FDR, Jr., with the magnificent original maquette containing all of the images from which the book was produced.

n.p., April 15, 1964. 15 x 20. "Rare first edition of The John F. Kennedys: A Family Album (New York) Farrar, Straus (1964), quarto, original blue cloth, original dust jacket, with original maquette of 76 gelatin silver prints, each measuring 2x3"", affixed to the inside of a cardboard and quarter-leather tri-fold portfolio, measuring 15x20"" folded. This collection of intimate photographs of the Kennedy family in Georgetown, Washington, Hyannis Port, and elsewhere, published just months after JFK?s assassination, inscribed on the title page by the photographer: ?To FDR Jr, Mark Shaw, April 15 1964,? accompanied by the extraordinary original maquette that includes all 76 of the miniature silver gelatin prints featuring Shaw?s photographs that were used by him to produce this work, each hand-numbered by Shaw.Mark Shaw first caught the eye of Jackie Kennedy when she was still a senator?s wife. A fashion photographer who had begun his career at Harper?s Bazaar before moving on to Mademoiselle and LIFE Magazine, Shaw became known for sophisticated photography and daring choices such as photographing couture in color. In 1959, the Kennedys agreed to let Shaw have unrestricted access to their lives in order to do a photo-essay called A Frontrunner?s Wife. They formed a close friendship in the process and Shaw accompanied them on many of their travels, taking pictures of the family?s private moments and capturing some of the most famous pictures of JFK, including the one of him walking along the dunes in Cape Cod that Kennedy once said was his favorite. ?Just as Abraham Lincoln thought Mathew Brady?s photography won him the presidency, so Jackie Kennedy thought Mark Shaw?s pictures helped her husband win the 1960 election. ?They really should be in the National Gallery!? she enthused. ?I have them propped up in our Sitting Room now, and everyone who comes in says the one of me and John [Jr.] looks like a Caravaggio?... Shaw was very much a part of Camelot and his most famous still photography is associated with that period? (Sullivan, 492). This book was rushed to publication after Kennedy was assassinated, as the public clamored for just one more glimpse of their beloved first family. Forever associated with the Kennedys from that point forward, Shaw spent his final years as a favored celebrity photographer. This copy of The John F. Kennedys was inscribed to FDR Jr., the son of Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt, who represented the 20th District of New York in Congress between 1949 and 1955. FDR Jr. campaigned avidly for Kennedy in the 1960 West Virginia Primary, using the Roosevelt name and the residual goodwill from the New Deal to diffuse anti-Catholic prejudice. Kennedy went on to name FDR Jr. Under-Secretary of Commerce and chairman of the President?s Appalachian Regional Commission. Copies of The John F. Kennedys inscribed by Shaw are quite rare as he died suddenly in 1969 at age 47; one with an association such as this is even more valuable. This copy is accompanied by the original maquette, compiled by Shaw, from which the book was produced, featuring 76 exceptional 2 by 3 inch horizontally oriented photographic images, each directly corresponding to two pages of the lushly photo-illustrated text. The images begin with the printed title page, move through the entire sequence of photographs that constituted the work, and are followed by four blanks that were meant to reserve space for the short essay Shaw wrote as an explanatory postscript. The images have been affixed sequentially inside a large folding portfolio bearing a large black-and-white cardboard label replicating the design from the cover of The John F. Kennedys on the front flap. Several silver gelatin prints neatly hand-numbered in pen by Shaw to correspond with page numbers from book.Dust jacket with faint soiling and light wear to extremities. Photographic prints near-fine with slight creasing and minor discoloration to a few images, light wear and a bit of toning to portfolio. A rare inscribed photobook in near-fine condition with a most desirable association, unique because it is accompanied by the original maquette hand-compiled by the photographer who captured Camelot.
