Photograph of Jackie Kennedy and John Jr. in Palm Beach, 1963]

Mark Shaw (1964), New York - Original vintage double-weight black and white photograph. Paper size 14" x 11" with an image area of approximately 10.5" square. Mild handling wear. Small stain to upper left of image. Layout mark to margin. With photographer's stamp, dated 1964, to verso. Very good. A wonderfully candid image of Jackie Kennedy and son, John Jr., on vacation in Palm Beach, FL -- the trip on which she announced her pregnancy with their third child, who died just after birth. Printed by the photographer, Mark Shaw, in 1964. Shaw extensively photo- graphed the Kennedys and was their preferred photographer. He went on to be a close family friend - a fact belied by this image's inti- macy. This photo appeared in Shaw's book THE JOHN F. KENNEDYS, pub- lished shortly after John's death in 1963.

A complete set of 'Uncle' books: Uncle; Uncle Cleans Up; Uncle And His Detective; Uncle And The Treacle Trouble; Uncle And Claudius The Camel; Uncle And The Battle For Badgertown.

1964 - 8vo. 6 volumes; bound in salmon pink, bright blue, yellow, red, turquoise and Air Force blue linson boards with spines lettered gilt, with pictorial endpapers in all but the final volume, preserved in white pictorial dustwrappers and purple plush-lined cloth-covered slipcase with ribbon pull; pp. [viii], 9-160; [viii], 9-176; [x], 11-172; [x], 11-184; [x], 11-192; [x], 11-171; with line illustrations throughout by Quentin Blake; externally fine with light speckling to the edges of volumes 3, 4 and 5, internally clean and sound throughout, protected by remarkably fresh dustwrappers, 3 of which are unclipped, with a slight horizontal crease to top edge of upper panel of 'Uncle', a faint score mark to upper panel of 'Treacle Trouble', a couple of inconspicuous horizontal scratches to spines, and minor rubbing to upper fore-edge fold of 'Claudius the Camel'; scarce as a set in this condition. First editions; each volume signed in ink by Quentin Blake to the title-page. A few of the 'Uncle' titles are ridiculously elusive which makes assembling a set, in uniform condition, a very difficult task. Although ostensibly a "grand, crazy comedy" the stories, it has been claimed, have multiple layers of meaning with some reading it as an exposà on the hypocrisy of society and others a critique of capitalism (Eccleshare. 1001 Children's Books).         Delights and Prejudices.

New York: Atheneum, 1964. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by the author on the half title page, "Good eating James Beard." Fine in a very good dust jacket with light wear to the spine tips. In this culinary journey, James Beard takes us back to the earliest days of his childhood when he started developing his precocious palate and lifelong "taste memories"--the ability to savor and remember the tastes and sensations of food. His enthusiasm for flavors, no matter how bold, would define Beard for the rest of his life. From devouring a raw onion as an infant to scouring the globe in search of local flavors as an adult, Delights and Prejudices is full of witty and illuminating stories that open a door into the world of one of America's first and perhaps greatest epicures. Packed with more than one hundred fifty recipes, including corn chili souffl?, fried oysters, and peach preserves, this very personal account of his life is as close to an autobiography as Beard ever penned.

A PRESIDENT'S COUNTRY: A GUIDE TO THE HILL COUNTRY OF TEXAS

The Alcalde Press (1964), Austin - One of a very small but unkown number of copies bound in full red leather with a gilt decoration of a saddle on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine. Illustrated with drawings by Mac Tatchell and photographs; 80 pages. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the President on the title page: "To Dorothy Nichols/with love--/Lyndon B. Johnson." Dorothy Nichols was a personal secretary and assistant to Johnson from the time he was a freshman congressman until the end of his presidency. She was the first female assistant Johnson hired. They were so close that Johnson gave her away at her wedding and included her in his will. Books genuinely signed by LBJ are quite scarce, and most of those are copies of THE VANTAGE POINT, usually signed on a bookplate and sometimes on a tipped-in page as issued by The First Edition Circle. Association copies, such as this, are extremely difficult to come by. We have not seen another association copy of this leatherbound title except for this very copy which we sold back in 2001 and acquired again a few years ago. Corners with gold-plated protectors added. Rubbing of leather at the head of the spine. Very Good or better and quite scarce in this presentation binding [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

(CALLAHAN, HARRY). Callahan, Harry. Foreword by Hugo Weber. HARRY CALLAHAN: PHOTOGRAPHS. Santa Barbara, CA: El Mochuelo Gallery, 1964. First Edition 1/1500. Small Folio. Gilt-Stamped Cloth in Slipcase. Photography Monograph. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. np, 126 duotone plates. With a bibliography by Bernard Karpel. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Published in a stated edition of fifteen hundred copies, this exquisite 1964 Harry Callahan monograph is notoriously scarce as it has been widely reported that only half of these were actually ever bound for sale. A tight and bright, most handsome example (cited on pages 202-203 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 160 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 168-169 of "The Book of 101 Books") marred only by the typical browning of the glue binding the endpapers to the boards - as is the case with every copy that we've ever handled - in a well-preserved, lightly-scuffed slipcase.       Jonathan Cape (U.K.) 1964 - IAN FLEMING and JOHN BURNINGHAM (illustrator) - CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG ADVENTURE Number 1, 2, and 3, published by UK publisher Jonathan Cape, copyright 1964-1965, All 3 books are First Printing (4 line text block at bottom of copyright pages with no references to reprinting - the 2nd and 3rd printings of these books had 5 lines of text with a reprinting reference), green & black illustrated endpapers, illustrated boards (boards have the same illustration as the dust jackets), John Burningham illustrated DJ, 10s 6d net prices on No. 1 & 2 (No. 3 has been price clipped) and no ISBN # to rear flap - confirming that the DJs are all 1st state DJs. IAN FLEMING WROTE THIS STORY WHILE RECOVERING FROM HIS FIRST HEART ATTACK. BECAUSE IT WAS GOING TO TAKE THE ILLUSTRATOR A WHILE TO DO ALL OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS, THE UK PUBLISHER JONATHAN CAPE DECIDED TO PUBLISH THE STORY IN 3 SEPARATE VOLUMES OVER 1964-1965 (FLEMING DIED BEFORE THE 3RD VOLUME WAS PUBLISHED). AFTER 1968, THE 3 UK VOLUMES WERE COMBINED INTO ONE BOOK SO THE THREE SEPARATE BOOKS ARE THE TRUE '1ST EDITION" OF THIS STORY. Books all appear unread with no creased page corners, no former ownership markings or used bookstore stamps inside (common to find with these children's books), no markings or erasures to the endpapers, foxing to top outer board/page edge to #1 book only otherwise no foxing to outer page edges, no age darkening or dust soiling to outer page edges which are still white, no spine tears (these books had a very flimsy "floating cardboard spine that was only attached to the boards by very thin paper - as a result these UK Chitty books are often found with damages/torn/missing spines), no wear to board edges or spine tips, hint of wear to couple of board corners, no soiling or staining or scotch tape marks to the boards, no dust handling/soiling to boards (hint of soiling/shelf rubbing at exposed edges only), no bumped board corners of note. Dust Jackets are all very nice - No. 1 has tiny bit of loss at bottom left corner on front panel (just to right of bottom spine) and No. 2 has tiny bit of paper loss at top spine tip (no lettering affected), three tiny short closed nick tears at top edge (2 on No. 1, 1 on No. 2) otherwise no chipping, tearing or creasing (these fragile DJs are notorious for being found with either considerable chipping and/or tearing to them), almost no wear to spine tips with just a couple of 'v' losses to occasional spine corners, no wear to front flap creases, almost no edge wear, no color rubbing to panels, all 3 dust jackets have clean top/bottom edges (when manufactured the glossy overcoat applied by the publisher did not extend all the way to the top/bottom of the paper - as a result these DJ are ALWAYS found with very "dirty" top/bottom edges), almost no dust rubbing to panels, no soiling or staining, NO SUN AGE YELLOWING TO SPINES (another common defect with these particularly UK dust jackets), no foxing spots. Overall a very nice set of FINE-/N-FINE books in VG+ to N-FINE condition dust jackets (only 1 is price clipped) of an Ian Fleming 1st printing set of 3 hardcovers - the only children's book he ever wrote and the basis for the Dick Van Dyke movie of the same name. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Ian Fleming James Bond 1st printing hardcover appearances up for sale. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        If Morning Ever Comes

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. First Edition. Cloth & Boards. Very Good+/Near Fine in Mylar Cover. An important First Edition (so stated) of Anne Tyler's first book, signed by the author who was only 22 years old when she wrote this first book. In grey and black cloth and boards and grey dustjacket. The book is quite clean and bright inside but there are two pinprick-size blemishes on the top edge, the top edges is light pink (very slightly faded perhaps), there is light fading around the edges of the front cover and a narrow top strip of fading on the back cover top and fore-edges. The dustjacket is wonderful, complete and quite stiff still; the price of $4.95 is intact and the date "10/64" appears on the bottom of the front flap. A lovely copy by an important author. By the author of "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant," "Saint Maybe," "Breathing Lessons," and "The Accidental Tourist."
