        Mythologies Quotidiennes

Musee d'Art Moderne de la ville de Paris, Paris 1964 - Plain white card wraps, stapled. Dj of lavender and white paint (looks to be original/unique) and large, black lettering. Multiple sky blue end papers. 28 pp. with bw images. Text in French. Catalogue from the exhibition, Mythologies Quotidiennes (Daily Mythologies), held at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, July to October 1964. With an introductory essay by Gassiot-Talabot, the catalogue of 115 works, and advertisements. "The exhibition in July 1964 at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris marks the symbolic beginning of the movement known as Narrative Figuration. Organized by artists Bernard Rancillac and Herve Telemaque and critics Gérald Gassiot-Talabots and Marie-Claude Dane, the exhibition reveals every artist's pure and formalistic "statement." Willingly using the grotesque, humor, and derision, these painters introduce the presentation with successive scenes or by juxtaposition or transformation of images. This movement began when abstraction was declining and comics, film and photography emerged as arts in their own right. Mythologies Quotidiennes features 34 artists who, like their American counterparts, put contemporary society and its images at the heart of their work. But, unlike their American counterparts, their work is more social and political." Artists included are Alleyn, Arnal, Arroyo, Atila, Berni, Bertholo, Bertini, Bettencourt, Beynon, Brusse, Buri, Cremonini, Dado, Fahlstrom, Foldes, Gaitis, Geissler, Gironella, Golub, Gracia, Kalinowski, Klasen, Kramer, Monory, Pistoletto, Rancillac, Faynaud, Raysse, Recalcati, Requighot, Saint-Phalle, Saul, Telemaque, and Voss. A wonderful copy! VG, two small tears about 1/2" long at top of pverwrap near the spine [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Cleveland Public Library, John G White Department: Catalog of the Chess Collection (Including Checkers)

Boston: G K Hall & Co, 1964.  2 volumes: [iv]+613 pages; [iv]+578 pages. Folio (14 1/4" x10 1/4") bound in original red gilt lettering to spine. Introduction by George J Maciuszko. (Betts: 1-58) First edition. This catalog consists of some 15,000 items from the chess and checker section of the John G White Collection housed in the Cleveland Public Library. The catalog entries from the card catalog have been photographically reproduced (size reduced) with 21 entries to each page in three columns of seven. In the author portion, titles are further arranged chronologically by date of publication. The titles in the subject part are classified by a local extension of the Decimal Classification. Cataloging practice appears to conform largely to the Dewey Decimal code, with some divergence of practice over the years. Some annotation of the bibliographical nature is given where relevant. The collection originated as the personal library of John Griswold White, a noted Cleveland attorney, who served many years as President and member of the Cleveland Public Library's Board of Trustees. White was an outstanding benefactor of the Library. His gifts to the Collection that was to bear his name began in the 1880's and continued to his death in 1928. "The largest chess library in the world," wrote the famous chess historian Harold J R Murray about this collection in his work in 1914. Hundreds of titles have been added since that time, including many of the choicest volumes from the library of J W Rimington Wilson, a British collector whose fine chess library was broken up after his death in 1927.Condition:Some light rubbing to the extremities else a very good set.

        From Doon with Death

John Long, London 1964 - HARDBACK - EX LIBRARY COPY - A surprisingly clean book that has been lightly read over the years. The green boards are very clean indeed, as is the spine. Internally, there is a library stamp to the title page, and to a few of the inner pages. The inner pages are clean with the odd sporadic mark, but there are no torn or dog eared pages and virtually no foxing. The dust wrapper is a very good example with loss to the spine tips, and to the corners of the front and rear flap folds. Correctly priced at 15s.net. [Attributes: First Edition]

Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man.

New York, McGraw-hill, (1964). Lex 8vo. Original white cloth with with black title-label with white and gilt lettering to spine. Very minor bumping to captials, but an unusually fresh binding. Original illustrated dust-jacket in very fine condition, not price-clipped. A few small, marginal tears, but overall excellent. Internally near mint. VII, (1), 359, (1) pp. First edition, first printing, of this pioneering study in media theory, which completely revolutionized our understanding of the process of communication and the development of the mind of mankind, from the invention of movable type through to the electronic age; THIS WORK ACTUALLY PREDICTS THE WORLD WIDE WEB AND TODAY'S INFORMATION-DEPENDENT PLANET, making it "the most important book ever written on communication". It is in this groundbreaking work that McLuhan first coins the phrases "global village" and "the medium is the message", completely rethinking our society. Due to this marvel of a book, written twenty years before the PC revolution and thirty years before the rise of the Internet!, "Marshall McLuhan has become an "ism". McLuhanism is a new approach to the relations of man and his technologies, and a radically fresh concept of our electronic world... Marshall McLuhan is a philosopher for the age of electronics, and a humanist for the age of communications. Seeing all of our new technologies as extensions of our senses, he examines the implications they hold for the very nature of human society" (From the front flap of the 5th printing of the work). Herbert Marshall McLuhan (1911 - 1980) was a Canadian philosopher of communication theory. His most famous and influential work is "Understanding Media", in which he coins his two most widely known and repeated phrases, but he has also written other highly important works in communication theory, and his work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media theory, as well as having practical applications in the advertising and television industries.Although he was a fixture in media discourse in the late 1960s, his influence began to wane in the early 1970s. With the arrival of the internet, however, his works have experienced a great renaissance and he is now considered the most important media thinker of all times and his main work, "Understanding Media", the most important book on communication. "When Marshall McLuhan first coined the phrases "global village" and "the medium is the message" in 1964, no-one could have predicted today's information-dependent planet. No-one, that is, except for a handful of science fiction writers and Marshall McLuhan. Understanding Media was written twenty years before the PC revolution and thirty years before the rise of the Internet. Yet McLuhan's insights into our engagement with a variety of media led to a complete rethinking of our entire society. He believed that the message of electronic media foretold the end of humanity as it was known. In 1964, this looked like the paranoid babblings of a madman. In our 21st century digital world, the madman looks quite sane. Understanding Media : the most important book ever written on communication. Ignore its message at your peril." (Official review of the 2001 Routledge Classics-edition). The first printing is difficult to come by in general and is very rarely seen in a nice dust-jacket.

8vo. 6 volumes; bound in salmon pink, bright blue, yellow, red, turquoise and Air Force blue linson boards with spines lettered gilt, with pictorial endpapers in all but the final volume, preserved in white pictorial dustwrappers and purple plush-lined cloth-covered slipcase with ribbon pull; pp. [viii], 9-160; [viii], 9-176; [x], 11-172; [x], 11-184; [x], 11-192; [x], 11-171; with line illustrations throughout by Quentin Blake; externally fine with light speckling to the edges of volumes 3, 4 and 5, internally clean and sound throughout, protected by remarkably fresh dustwrappers, 3 of which are unclipped, with a slight horizontal crease to top edge of upper panel of 'Uncle', a faint score mark to upper panel of 'Treacle Trouble', a couple of inconspicuous horizontal scratches to spines, and minor rubbing to upper fore-edge fold of 'Claudius the Camel'; scarce as a set in this condition. First editions; each volume signed in ink by Quentin Blake to the title-page. A few of the 'Uncle' titles are ridiculously elusive which makes assembling a set, in uniform condition, a very difficult task. This popular series of book about the pompous, fabulously wealthy, purple dressing-gown-wearing elephant called Uncle have inspired a cult following across the world. Although ostensibly a "grand, crazy comedy" the stories, it has been claimed, have multiple layers of meaning with some reading it as an exposé on the hypocrisy of society and others a critique of capitalism (Eccleshare. 1001 Children's Books).

J.B. Lippincott Company,, 1964. Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Company, 1964. 24 cm x 16 cm. XXI, 429 pages. Original Hardcover with dustjacket. With several black-and-white pictures. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Jacket slightly torn. In protective mylar. Signed and inscribed by 4 members of the expedition. James Ramsey Ullman (1907 ? July 5, 1971) was an American writer and mountaineer. He was born in New York. He was not a high end climber, but his writing made him an honorary member of that circle. The books he wrote were mostly about mountaineering and geography. His works include Banner in the Sky, which was a book based on the true story of the first climbing of the Matterhorn (it was filmed in Switzerland as Third Man on the Mountain), and The White Tower (which would star Glenn Ford and Lloyd Bridges). Also Americans on Everest by James Ramsay Ullman, page 195, published by J. B. Lippincott Company 1964, Library of Congress Catalogue #64-14475.nHe was the ghost writer for Tenzing Norgay's autobiography Man of Everest (originally published as Tiger of the Snows). High Conquest was the first of nine books for the J.B. Lippincott company coming out in 1941 followed by The White Tower, River of The Sun, Windom's Way, and Banner in the Sky which was a 1955 Newbery Honor book. All of these titles became small motion pictures.nHe also wrote the short story "Top Man", a story about mountaineers climbing K3, a mountain in India. The story appears in several anthologies. It was originally published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1940. Issue #35.nBeyond his mountaineering books, he wrote "Where the Bong Tree Grows," an account of a year he spent traveling through some of the most remote islands of the South Pacific. Ullman also wrote a novel about the poet Arthur Rimbaud, The Day on Fire (1958).nHe joined the American Mount Everest Expedition 1963 as official historian. Because of health problems he had to stay in Kathmandu. His book Americans on Everest: The Official Account of the Ascent was published in 1964. He died in Boston from cancer on July 5, 1971.         [Quotations from Chairman Mao].

Beijing: Central Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, 1964. 1st Edition. Soft cover. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. [Quotations from Chairman Mao]. Peking: Central Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, [May 1964]. 16mo (x mm). [8], 2, 2, 250 pp., including half-title printed in red, title-page printed in red and green, portrait of Chairman Mao printed in sepia, uncorrected calligraphic endorsement leaf of Lin Biao printed in black, and table of contents. Original printed paper wrappers printed in red and black. Protective vintage paper dustjacket pasted on top to the binding titled in Chinese script on front (Quotations from Chairman Mao). Provenance: Training school of Kunming (half-title annotated in Chinese). First and last blanks soiled a bit, otherwise clean and crisp. A fine copy of the rare first printing of the first edition.Created for use by the People's Liberation Army as a pocket handbook of inspirational reading, the book contains short segments taken from Mao's speeches and published writings for use in study groups as lessons for discussion amongst the soldiers. Demand for additional copies within the army required the book to get reprinted several times in 1965 (2nd edition March enlarged to 32 chapters, 3rd edition August with final 33rd chapter added). It is the second most frequently printed book in history, after the Bible, with an estimated five-billion copies produced in more than 100 languages in the past forty-five years. Early printings include a one-page facsimile of Lin's calligraphic endorsement for everyone to study Chairman Mao's writings, but following accusations of Lin's unsuccessful plot to assassinate Mao in September 1971, the government required this page to be torn out in an effort to eradicate Lin's name from modern history. Subsequent copies printed after 1971 no longer include any mention of Lin and most earlier copies that do survive have this page removed. The first printing is slightly taller than all later editions and includes an error found in the earliest form of Lin's calligraphic facsimile endorsement, where a superfluous brush stroke occurred in the 2nd vertical line from the right, 2nd character from the top. It is generally accepted that all copies comprising only thirty chapters and with text ending at page 250 are first editions. The more famous issue in red vinyl cover was simultaneously printed with those in first paper wrappers, but the vinyl took longer to produce and was thus release shortly after. Paper wrapper copies were intended for Army officers whereas those in red vinyl were produced to be shared by brigades of up to eight soldiers. (Schiller, Quotations from Chairman Mao. A short bibliographical Study, the Grolier Club, New York, 2014). Some copies contain textual errors in the final line of p.82 and the first line of p.83. As sheets for the Quotations were printed at several locations throughout China to facilitate faster distribution, no place of publication is stated; and no priority can be established for copies in which the misprints occur and those in which they do not. (Han, Sources and Early Printing History of Chairman Mao's 'Quotations,' Antiquarian Book Review, November 2003). Very Good.

        Barefoot in the Park...

New York: Random House, 1964. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY NEIL SIMON on the title page, of his first great hit- the play that would launch his career. The basis for the 1967 film starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. "The earliest of Simon's collaborations with director Mike Nichols (who won the Tony Award for Best Director), Barefoot in the Park was an instant hit with both the critics and the public, enjoying a run on Broadway that lasted for almost four years. Howard Taubman, reviewing the play for the New York Times, called it a 'bubbling, rib-tickling comedy' and claimed that Simon exhibited 'the dash of a highly skilled professional writer.' Norman Nadel, in the New York World-Telegram and The Sun, wrote that 'Simon's scintillating dialogue, the cast's spirited playing and Nichols' clear genius as a director of comedy turn this [play] into the merriest evening Broadway has enjoyed in years.' John McClain of the Journal-American summed up the response of many playgoers when he remarked that Barefoot in the Park was, quite simply, the funniest comedy he had ever seen" (Koprince, Understanding Neil Simon). Illustrated with photos of the original production starring Robert Redford.New York: Random House, 1964. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. Book fine, dust jacket with tiny chipping to spine ends; closed tear and light soiling to back panel. A very handsome copy. Fine / Fine....

        Mythologies Quotidiennes...

Paris: Musee d'Art Moderne de la ville de Paris, 1964. Plain white card wraps, stapled. VG, two small tears about 1/2" long at top of pverwrap near the spine....
