About Fine (and probably unread) in about Fine jacket, the spine panel lightly toned. The author's sixth book, winner of the National Book Award. "Herzog is a massive intellectual accomplishment that has repeatedly been likened to JoyceÂ’s Ulysses. It remains BellowÂ’s acknowledged masterwork . . . Bellow wrote Herzog while in Puerto Rico, New York, and Chicago dealing with yet another marital catastrophe. At its heart is BellowÂ’s profound shock at learning that his friend, Jack Ludwig, had cuckolded him. The last of their circle to know he had been deceived, Bellow lapsed into deep depression and produced Moses Herzog, an intensely self-justifying hero who, like himself, was tearful, cuckolded, and precipitated into intellectual and spiritual crisis by the failure of his marriage." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always noted), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Collection of Sexology Magazine Original Artwork

(New York: Sexology Corp,, circa 1960s). Production artwork shows usual signs of use, including pen notations, tape marks, etc; most photographs still glued on board, but a few loose; glassine overlays in various conditions, many showing significant tears. Overall, compelling and scarce collection of original artwork.. Collection of 18 unique black and white photographs used for the production of the long running magazine "Sexology". Most of the photographs are 8 x 10 inches or slightly smaller; some are collaged from multiple photos. All are mounted to stiff board and also have various production notations, apparently for publication; some also have glassine covers with further cropping marks. Most of the boards are stamped to the verso "Sexology"; some are additionally dated, with years ranging from 1964-1968. Sexology was a long-running magazine (1933-1983) published by science fiction pioneer Hugo Gernsback. Using the "Popular Science" approach, Sexology presented often lurid and pulpy prose under the guise of sociology and medical science. The 1960s issues are particularly admired today for their low budget but strikingly mod and psychedelic art direction, as amply demonstrated in this collection.

N.p.: N.d., c. 1964. Some prints loose, a few edge creases; very good overall in unbound sheets. The only maquette I have seen of one of the seminal photobooks of the 20th century.. Partial maquette of Harry Callahan's first book, eventually published by El Mochuelo Gallery, Santa Barbara, 1964. Four unbound signatures totaling 52 pages, with 27 photographic prints taped to the pages or in some cases loose. Copious publication notes in an unknown hand, but likely the publisher David van Riper All images from the fourth and final section of the book, corresponding almost exactly to the published sequence. Plate 91 is a variant image noted "different" in the maquette. Includes plates 89-98, 107, 110-118, 120-126. While the exact photographic process is unknown, the images appear to be copy or work prints on silver paper; many of the photographs are noticeably darker than the reproductions in the book. Acquired by the original owner from publisher David Van Riper when he moved from Chicago to Santa Barbara to start the short-lived El Mochuelo Gallery.

      - All of the paintings but one are framed and glazed and they are in fine condition. Provenance: Felix Landau Gallery, Private Collection (Los Angeles). Exhibited at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, NY, 2011. All of the paintings but one are framed and glazed and they are in fine condition. Provenance: Felix Landau Gallery, Private Collection (Los Angeles). Exhibited at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, NY, 2011 John Ashbery wrote in an Art News review of Brainard's third solo exhibition at the Landau-Alan Gallery (March 22-April 17, 1969): "Joe Brainard reminds one of Proust's gallant remark to the painter Madeleine Lemaire that she had created more roses than anyone after God. Brainard gives both a run for their money, if not with roses then with pansies, and with tulips and poppies tied for second place, row upon row of garden-variety flowers painted with meticulous deftness. The effect is always of profusion and of strangeness beyond that. What is a flower, one begins to wonder? A beautiful, living thing that at first seems to promise meaning.but remains meaningless. Here they merely continue, each as beautiful as the others, but only beautiful, with nothing behind it, and yet. The unfinished clause secretly binds the work together and raises it above a high level of provocation.". [Attributes: First Edition]
