        The Typographic Book: 1450 - 1935

      London: Ernest Benn, 1963. Quarto. 102 pp. + 378 plates. First edition. Ornamental half title and title page from wood engravings by Reynolds Stone, printed in terracotta. Illustrated with 377 plates reproducing significant examples of typography from Gutenberg to Bruce Rogers. In an Elizabeth Greenhill binding of slate-green oasis featuring red and black onlays forming the letters of the title, surrounded by gold tooling on the upper panel. The letters are then echoed by an outline in gilt. On the lower panel, the gilt outline of the letters are echoed in blind tooling. Title in gilt on spine, with three onlaid bands of black goatskin. Doublures and endleaves of plum-colored Japanese paper. & & Writing about Greenhill's work in an article originally published in the Book Collector, Dorothy Harrop points to certain trademark qualities inherent in her finished bindings, among which is "the constant high standard of her lettering." Harrop observes that "she has several very handsome bindings to her credit in which the title forms the sole or dominant element in the design." It can be said that this binding is among the most striking of these treatments. Although various dates are given for the completion of this work, the Catalogue Raisonné assigns the date of 1966 to it. It was around this time, early in 1966, that Greenhill's mother died, prompting an examination of the inscriptions on the copings in her family's plot, which she found to be badly eroded. This resulted in her decision to erect a single headstone of her own design, inscribed "in a good Roman alphabet." It is perhaps a consequence of these events that the lettering on the present binding assumes a sculptural dimensionality. It is a design style that she used only once again, four years later, on a copy of the Allen Press's Printing with a Hand-Press.& & This binding has had a single owner since it was completed for the collection of Lord Wardington, and it bears his booklabel on the rear pastedown. Greenhill met Wardington at the Foyles Art Gallery for the Guild of Contemporary Binders exhibit in 1963, and he became a regular patron of her work. In the Foreword he contributed to her Catalogue Raisonné, Wardington writes that what appealed to him about her work was the way "she maintained the high traditions of the craft while at the same time using exciting non-traditional designs." Her high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail meant that "her bindings still work perfectly as books should, opening well and handling comfortably." & & Greenhill was the first woman member of the Guild of Designer Bookbinders, having been elected in 1961. The Guild then became Designer Bookbinders, and each year they present an award for gilding given in honor of Greenhill, who is now an honorary member. & & This binding was featured in the Modern British Bookbinding exhibit, held by Designer Bookbinders in Brussels and the Hague in 1985. The display card and spec sheet are laid into the morocco-backed cloth folding case.

A Very Good copy of the First American edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, lower outside corner rubbed), in an about Very Good dust toned dust jacket (with edge chipping and a small chip to the spine affecting the upper right portion of the "T" in "Saint", and a 1 1/2" closed tear to the bottom of the rear panel near the spine fold), SIGNED BY JEAN-PAUL SARTRE on the half-title; Sartre's exhaustive evaluation of Jean Genet, the controversial French poet, novelist, playwright, and political activist whose explicit and provocative portrayals of homosexuality and criminality, as well as his subversion of traditional moral values, led to the banning of his works in the United States. Genet was so affected by Sartre's existential analysis of him in "Saint Genet" that he quit writing for 5 years. (Copies of Saint Genet are strangely scarce.) Signed copies of Sartre's works are rather uncommon and signed copies in English translation are remarkably so. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY JEAN-PAUL SARTRE. RARE.

      (Verona: Officina Bodoni, 1963). Quarto. (350)pp. One of 275 copies printed in Italian. Wood-engraved title page by Reynolds Stone and 114 woodcuts from the Epistole et Evangelii (1495), newly cut by Bruno Bramanti and Italo Zetti. Mardersteig conjectured that the series of woodcuts that graced one of the "rarest and most beautiful incunables illustrated with woodcuts" was the work of the Renaissance painter, Bartolomeo di Giovanni. In keeping with the typographical tenets of the Officina Bodoni, this was the third edition of the Gospels produced by Mardersteig: the first was the English version, appearing in 1962, followed by a version in Latin. The present copy bears a presentation inscription from Pope Paul VI, dated 9 March, 1968, to Virgilio Ferrari, who served as mayor of Milan from 1951 to 1961. Ferrari has the distinction of having been the longest-serving Milanese mayor of the twentieth century, and he oversaw much of that city&#39;s post-World War II modernization. Before he became Paul VI, Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini was the Archbishop of Milan from 1953 to 1963, and the second man to ascend to the Papacy from this position. As Pope, Paul VI is best remembered for the completion of the Second Vatican Council, begun by his predecessor John XXIII, in addition to the encyclical on the Regulation of Birth, which was published just four months after the date of the present inscription. Few small surface scuffs, very slight toning to spine ends, else very fine in publisher&#39;s full green oasis morocco with ornamentation and titling in gilt on front cover, titling in gilt on spine.         C": A Journal of Poetry - Vol. 1, No. 4 (September 1963) [Signed]

      New York: Lorenz Gude and Ted Berrigan, 1963. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. Side-stapled 4to. mimeo with silk-screened covers designed by Andy Warhol. 36 x 22.5 cm. Unpaginated. This copy SIGNED by Berrigan, Denby, Wieners, Frank O&#39;Hara, Gerard Malanga, and Andy Warhol on the colophon. One of an unknown but tiny (one source suggests "a half-dozen or so," but suspect higher) number of such specially-signed copies. In addition, six poems contain small corrections in Denby&#39;s hand, and one poem is revised by both Denby and Berrigan (with Denby correcting Berrigan&#39;s correction). Generally fine. An unknown hand (probably Berrigan&#39;s) has noted &#147;Signed&#148; in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. Trace wear to edges. A remarkably bright, sharp, clean and sound example of a fragile production. The fourth issue of Berrigan&#39;s landmark mimeo, an issue dedicated to the work of poet and critic Edwin Denby, but most significant for its Warhol-designed cover. As the colophon page states simply: "The cover of this issue was designed by Andy Warhol from photographs of poets Edwin Denby and Gerard Malanga." Berrigan had met Warhol at a reading by Frank O&#39;Hara earlier that year and a few days later sent the artist the first two issues of his fledgling literary journal. As Berrigan&#39;s diary notes soon after: "Andy Warhol said he&#39;d like to do a cover for C 4." Warhol and Malanga met Denby at his apartment where the photographs for the cover were taken. The two images finally selected -- of Malanga behind Denby with both men holding hands, and the second for the rear cover of Malanga leaning in to kiss Denby -- caused a stir in literary circles when it was finally published. As Reva Wolf -- whose book Andy Warhol, Poetry, and Gossip in the 1960&#39;s (Chicago, 1997) provides the fullest account of the production and importance of these images -- explains: "This is the first-known instance in which Warhol used Polaroids for silkscreen portraits, a practice he did not pursue at the time but one to which he would return and which would become his standard procedure for making portraits" (22). According to Malanga, it was Berrigan who actually printed the covers -- Warhol having dropped the silkscreens off "along with a can of paint, a squeegee, and instructions on how to print it" (30) on his way to Los Angeles for his second one-man show -- thereby becoming in essence a temporary Warhol studio assistant. Nonetheless, these Warhol-designed covers represent a turning point in his development as an artist. As Wolf explains, Warhol&#39;s C portraits were both a backhanded critique of the poet Frank O&#39;Hara (who maintained a chilly skepticism of the artist) as well as a way for Warhol to further insinuate himself in the New York literary scene at an early and still-formative time in his career. Copies of this particular issue of C are themselves scarce. Edition sizes for most issues were typically around 250. We&#39;ve seen only a handful of this issue over the last ten years, with several lacking the covers, and are aware of only two other copies of the signed issue having been offered for sale. And though not in Warhol&#39;s catalogue raisonne, this very-limited signed issue represents what is, in effect, one the artist&#39;s earliest silk-screened multiples. Rare and important.

This etching is on a full sheet of paper and has never been trimmed - rare With: "The Range Country" a bookseller's catalogue (pre-1963). A full page illustration of this particular etching is depicted there. The owners of International Bookfinders had purchased the etching and offered it in this catalogue; for some reason it was never sold - perhaps they decided they liked it too much? We acquired it from the heirs [Galvin #67].

Original black cloth, spine lettered in gold, publisher&#39;s device in blind to lower board. A very good copy. First edition of Plath&#39;s only novel, a semi-autobiographical novel which stands as a sympathetic testimony to female isolation and emotional conflict in the 1950s and 60s. The Bell Jar is heavily informed by Plath&#39;s experiences as student guest editor of Mademoiselle magazine. On the book&#39;s publication, Sylvia killed herself a month after publication. It was issued first under Plath&#39;s real name in Britain in 1967. Thje facsimile dustjacket is in a Brodart archival cover.

John Steinbeck&#39;s personal Archive of personal correspondence and other materials related to his beloved dog Charley as well as reviews and other materials related to his book titled "Travels with Charley". These materials were kept by Steinbeck in his Manhattan apartment and include the following: (I) Original autograph draft letter from John Steinbeck to several of his friends, written entirely in his hand on a single sheet of yellow legal-sized paper, in Fine condition and SIGNED BY JOHN STEINBECK. Dated twice by Steinbeck "4/23/63" in his hand, the letter is "Just a sad note to tell you that Charley died last Thursday April 18, leaving a large and jagged hole." Steinbeck also mentions his and Elaine&#39;s move to a new apartment. The brief letter is addressed initially to Howard Hunter and his wife, Edna, and Steinbeck also notes that a like letter should be sent to Ted Patrick at Holiday Magazine in Philadelphia, and also to "Ted and Vera", adding an additional line to their letter about having tried to contact them by phone. [Howard Hunter was the Deputy Administrator of the Works Progress Administration during FDR&#39;s Presidency, served as President of the American Institute of Baking, and served as Best Man at Steinbeck&#39;s second wedding (to Gwyndolyn "Gwyn" Conger). John Steinbeck and Ted Patrick knew each other well, as Holiday Magazine often published Steinbeck&#39;s work. They also shared a great affection for dogs, and Patrick, in addition to being Holiday Magazine&#39;s Editor, authored a book titled "The Thinking Dog&#39;s Man".] Included with this Steinbeck autograph signed draft letter are (a) the original signed response from Howard Hunter to John Steinbeck stating, in part, "We have wept for Charlie and for you. Good dogs and good men are much too scarce." and (b) the original signed response from Ted Patrick stating, in part, "...I had expected such news, but that never lessens the shock of it when it actually comes. ... I have always said when I&#39;ve lost a dog that I wouldn&#39;t get another, I couldn&#39;t stand going through it again; but I always have and really never have regretted it. Love, Ted". (Each letter also has pencil notes from John Steinbeck&#39;s Assistant. See the Emil Bialic correspondence below for John Steinbeck&#39;s view on getting a new dog.) Steinbeck&#39;s original draft of the letter to these individuals has been SIGNED BY JOHN STEINBECK. Steinbeck frequently had his Assistant type and sign his letters for him, rarely signing his draft of the letter himself. However, at the end of the autograph draft letter offered here, Steinbeck has himself signed "love / John", indicating the importance of the letter to him and the fact that the addressees were his close friends; (II) Original 2-page typed letter dated May 8, 1963 from Emil Bialic to John Steinbeck, occasioned by Charlie&#39;s death and providing the writer&#39;s thoughts on dogs and the dog-man relationship and providing a tale about his own dog "Joe McCarthy", with an enclosed copy of a 3-page typed letter or note with further reflections on the same subject (and without the other enclosures referred to by Bialic), TOGETHER WITH John Steinbeck&#39;s autograph response in pencil (as was his custom) written May 15, 1963 filling the rectos of two full sheets, and approximately 1/2 of a third sheet, of lined yellow legal-sized paper, likewise SIGNED BY JOHN STEINBECK, TOGETHER WITH the John Steinbeck&#39;s typescript thereof, dated May 27, 1963 and occupying 1 and 1/3 sheets of paper. (All of these items are stapled together at the upper left corner -- the last page having come loose from the staple) Steinbeck&#39;s prompt reply to Bialic, along with the content of Steinbeck&#39;s response, demonstrates that the subject matter greatly engaged him. Steinbeck began by writing: "Many thanks for your letter of May 8th. There were many things / spoken of that I would like to go into." Steinbeck then discussed the naming of dogs, stating, in part, "I have always wondered about names and have written some specu- / lative essays on the subject. Does the name go to the namee or / does the namee draw the name? Was there something about the dog, / Joe McCarthy that caused you to give him that name? Anyway, / it&#39;s a fine story." Steinbeck then discusses some of his own dogs, relating that "I have had numbers of dogs and the naming process has always / been the same. I give him a name and then, the name goes into / the diminutive and then changes and gradually, a name emerges / that has no relation to the original." Regarding Charley he mentions that "Charley&#39;s French name / was not for him. Then he had cute names until Charley fitted / him and was never changed." He then comments on "...the destruction of dogs through breed- / ing to conformity", particularly with respect to Poodles, on the White English bull terrier, speculating that he will ultimately get one for his next dog, and a "schwein of a dachshund" belonging to some friends of his, dog training methods, and not wanting a "Pavlovian dog" but rather a "dog-dog", one who "can and will be with me", touches on the many offers to supply a dog made to him by others, and concluding "Again, I thank you for your very kind letter. I think I / won&#39;t have any dog for a while. If I just sit still, one / will happen to me and that way, it will be the right one." As noted above, Steinbeck frequently had his loyal Assistant, Janet Beckman, sign his letters for him, rarely signing even his draft of the letter himself. However, at the end of the autograph draft letter offered here, Steinbeck writes: "(Janet please sign for me) / test signature [showing the signature style she should use] / John Steinbeck / (you can do it fine)". A charming bit of correspondence, including the draft of Steinbeck&#39;s reply written entirely in John Steinbeck&#39;s hand, on a subject quite near and dear to him, SIGNED BY JOHN STEINBECK; (III) Original Autograph Letter Signed from Nat Benchley (Nathaniel Robert Benchley, Son of Nathaniel G. Benchley and brother of Peter Benchley of "Jaws" fame) to John Steinbeck dated Monday, May 6 (1963), written on The Choate School Stationary which Nat Benchley attended, enclosing the essay test given to Nat Benchley and his fellow students on John Steinbeck&#39;s "The Grapes of Wrath". The letter reads: "Dear Mr. S, / Enclosed you will find a copy / of the test which was given us on the / Grapes of Wrath. I just thought / you&#39;d be interested to see what / our English master got out of , / or put into, the book. // I was terribly distressed / to hear about Charlie a few / weeks ago. I know how it feels to / lose such a member of your family, / and he was a very dear friend / of mine, too. // Please give Elaine my love, / and tell her I hope to see you / in June. // Rspctfly, // Nat B." The Steinbeck and Benchley families were great friends of each other, living in adjacent houses owned by John Steinbeck, the Benchley house being rented by Steinbeck to his good friend Nathaniel Benchley, Nat Benchley&#39;s father, at a discounted rate, and the two homes sharing a back yard. (Nathaniel Benchley wrote a book titled "Side Street" about the lives of the two families living as friends and neighbors. Please see our listing of "Side Street" signed by the Steinbeck and Benchley families.); (IV) Original autograph condolence letter signed from the Mayor of Sag Harbor, where John Steinbeck spent much time, and (V) John Steinbeck&#39;s personal file, marked Travels with Charley / Reviews, containing numerous newspaper clippings about Steinbeck&#39;s trip and the book, Book of the Month Club promotional materials for the book, a typescript copy of the Press Release for the book, and a large, poster-sized page 1 from the Chicago Sunday Tribune Review of the book. All items are in Very Good or better condition. A highly meaningful collection of items related to the dog who was so beloved by Steinbeck, two of which items are SIGNED BY JOHN STEINBECK, all of which letters John Steinbeck elected (out of the no doubt thousands of letters he received) to keep in his personal correspondence file showing their importance to him. Telstar I made a tremendous impact on the world by transmitting transatlantic live television. "Telstar captured the popular imagination in a way that it is hard to believe any satellite, especially a communication satellite, could do today. According to AT&T, more than half the population of the UK watched its first transatlantic transmission, a remarkable percentage given that far fewer people than today owned television sets." (Gavaghan, Something New under the Sun, p. 188)According to the US Space Objects Registry, Telstar 1 and 2 were still in orbit as of May 2010. The Telstar-satellites represent the true beginning of satellite communication.Telstar 1 was launched on July 10th 1962 and was the world's first active repeater satellite, the primary function of which was transmission of voice, black/white and colour television, fascimilie, and high- and low-speed data. The Telstar-project had five overall objectives; to demonstrate broadband transmission, test operational communication satellite reliability, obtain operational experience with ground terminals and provide space radiation measurement.Telstar 1 was a medium-altitude satellite with an elliptic orbit which was completed once every 2 hours and 37 minutes. Due to Telstar's non-geosynchronous orbit, its availability for transatlantic signals was limited to 20 minutes in each orbit that passed over the Atlantic Ocean. The Telstar 2 was almost identical with Telstar 1 but had a higher orbit to reduce exposure to the damaging effect of the radiation belt. The Chief of NASA's Communications Satellite Programs wrote in 1966: "Although not the first communications satellite, Telstar is the best known of all and is probably considered by most observers to have ushered in the era of satellite communications. This impression was a result of the tremendous impact upon the public by the first transmission of live television across the Atlantic Ocean. Telstar I was launched on July 10, 1962, and on that same day live television pictures originating in the United States were received in France."       Geneva: Edwin Engelberts, 1963, first Braque edition, one of 150 examples (total edition 220), signed in pencil by Georges Braque and René Char on the justification page. Char's text is illustrated with 29 original lithographs by Braque, 13 of them hors-texte, in bright colors, some of the in-texte lithos are also in colors. Printed by Mourlot on Rives with deckle edges or hand-torn sheets. 64 pp, sewn in publisher's wrappers, housed in a handsome cloth folding box by Ann Repp; overall size 13.5 x 10.5 in (34 x 27 cm). In excellent condition. References: Vallier 187; Mourlot 119-140; Wunsche 126-152; Monod 2621; Kornfeld 152/23. Mourlot provides the following info: &#148;This work, whose execution lasted several years, greatly interested Braque. Several of the illustrations were redone two or three times and it was not always easy to obtain the bon à tirer (from Braque). The majority of the works were done on litho paper, transferred to zinc or stone and retouched by the artist in his workshop&#148;.

        Annual New York Avant Garde Festival [title varies]. Complete set of 19 vintage posters, 1963-1980

      Between 1963 and 1980 the cellist and performance artist Charlotte Moorman (known mostly for her work with Nam June Paik) organized fifteen increasingly elaborate festivals featuring a wide variety of performances in various locations. The first three were at Judson Hall, a small recital hall across from Carnegie Hall (not to be confused with Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village). Number 4 was in Central Park. Number 5 took over a Staten Island ferry. Number 6 paraded down Central Park West. The 7th was on two islands in the East River, the 8th, at the Lexington Avenue Armory. Festival number 9 occupied a vintage riverboat docked at South Street Seaport. Number 10 took place in Penn Central boxcars on a track at Grand Central Station. Number 11 was at Shea Stadium; number 12, at Floyd Bennett Field at Gateway National Park in Brooklyn. The World Trade Center was the site of the 13th. Number 14 took place on the Charles River in Cambridge. The final number 15 was at the Passenger Ship Terminal on the Hudson River. **By number 11 (1974) the casts and acknowledgments had grown to the length of movie credits. Among the many hundreds of performers were John Cage, David Tudor, Allan Kaprow, Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono, Allen Ginsberg, Ray Johnson, Joseph Beuys, John Lennon, Max Neuhaus, Yvonne Rainer, Laurie Anderson, Ornette Coleman, Geoff Hendricks, Shirley Clarke, Bob Watts, James Tenney, Meredith Monk, and Al Hansen. **For each of these festivals Charlotte Moorman published a poster, four of them in two versions. She designed the simple first three herself; number four was a collaboration with Jim McWiliams; the remaining eleven were his work. Like the festivals, the posters became larger and increasingly elaborate, with images and text in layers. Number 11 is a riot of color featuring multiple aerial views of Shea Stadium. Number 13 shows the Twin Towers from different views. If number 11 was a riot of color, number 14 is full-fledged revolution. The sequence ends with a 20-color extravaganza. **A few complete sets remain available of approximately 50 that could be assembled from Charlotte Moorman's estate. Numbers 1, 2, 8, and 9 appear in two versions. Please write or call for a complete descriptive list. Some posters also are available singly. Nearly all of these posters that might appear on the current market were folded and mailed. All of these are flat, uncreased, and unmailed, except 2b, 3, and both number 8s. Those four were folded but are unmarked and have been stored flat. Sizes range from 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches to 36 x 24 inches. Sets will be shipped in tubes.
