[Typescript]: Cleopatra's Car [a chapter in Second Skin]

1963. Thirty page typescript, with a one page Typed Letter Signed by Donald Barthelme. Loose sheets attached by a staple with some rubbing, a crease to the final sheet, and some wear near the staple, near fine. The letter is very good or better with moderate toning and an indentation from a paper clip. The original typescript of "Cleopatra's Car," a chapter from Hawkes's 1964 book Second Skin, with a few scattered corrections in an unknown hand and with substantial differences from the final published version. Hawkes's name and address are in the upper left-hand corner but have been struck through in pencil and the address of the book's publisher, New Directions, is written underneath with a note referencing Second Skin, in publisher James Laughlin's hand. This chapter was apparently submitted for publication to the literary magazine Location but, according to the accompanying TLS from editor Donald Barthelme, was "not quite what we're looking for." Accompanied by a first edition of Second Skin (New York: New Directions 1964, fine in near fine dustwrapper). .

        George Seferis Signed Poem

Two Page Autographed Poem by Nobel Prize-winning poet George Seferis, in his hand and signed by him. In 1963, George Seferis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture." Seferis was the first Greek to receive the prize. While Seferis has sometimes been considered a nationalist poet, his 'Hellenism' had more to do with his identifying a unifying strand of humanism in the continuity of Greek culture and literature.

FREDERICK SOMMER: 1939 - 1962, PHOTOGRAPHS. WORDS NOT SPENT TODAY BUY SMALLER IMAGES TOMORROW

Rochester, NY: Aperture, (1963). First ed. Sommer, Frederick. 8vo. text and b&w full-page photographic plates. White cloth titled on the upper cover. The boards are modestly soiled; neat signature of the previous owner on the title page. A very good copy. Initially issued as Aperture 10:4 in printed wrappers, a small number (presumed to be fifty copies) were issued in cloth. The wrapper issue is printed on white stock with the title, half-title and along the bottom portion "1962 APERTURE 10: 4" , thus serving as the title page. This same setting is used in the cloth edition as the title page with the date and Aperture issue number removed. They further differ in that the cloth issue does not have the subscription paragraph on the copyright leaf but does state " An Aperture Publication, Entire contents copyrighted 1963 by Aperture". Also, the wrapper issue has the list of subscribers on the recto of the rear wrapper, and a photograph by Ansel Adams on the verso. All other type settings and plates are identical. This cloth edition was issued without a dust wrapper and was never offered for sale - it is presumed that only a small number were made for the friends of the publisher and the photographer.

        List of Ten Books

[c. 1963]. In Yates's hand, a list of ten books, numbered 1 through 10, on the verso of a 1963 letter from the President of Little, Brown to a Miss Claire Gardiner of Washington, DC, saying that Little, Brown did not have a role in choosing titles for the White House Libraries Project but that Yates's Revolutionary Road would have been "an excellent choice." The White House Libraries Project put together 100 books to be given to 100 heads of state "to help tell the story of the American way of life to the people of one hundred nations in all parts of the world." It is unknown to us how or why Yates came to list ten titles on the verso of this letter, but his criteria apparently differed from that of the White House, as the list includes Flaubert's Madame Bovary (at number 2), Moore's The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (number 3), Joyce's Dubliners (number 5), Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms (number 6), Mailer's The Naked and the Dead (number 8), Conrad's Lord Jim (number 9), and Ford's The Good Soldier (number 10). In fact the only books on Yates's list that are set on American soil are Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (number 7), Styron's Lie Down in Darkness (number 4), and, at number 1, Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. As a Top 10 list, it gives an interesting view of Yates's take on literary immortality, at least at that moment in time. Styron's presence on the list -- ahead of Joyce and Hemingway -- is something of a surprise, but an indication of the esteem in which he was held in those years by other writers; Yates himself came to occupy a similar position eventually, having taught and mentored a number of later-to-be-prominent writers while he was on the faculty of the Iowa Writers Workshop. Folded in thirds, two faint coffee stains; near fine. Provenance: Wendy Sears.
