Adagio religioso [in E-flat major] pour le Violon-Cello, avec accompgn. de [!]Pianno, composé et dédiée à son ami A. Suck. Autograph musical manuscript

      - An unknown work. Not in the most comprehensive work list in eskoslovenský hudební slovník (Prague: Státní hudební vydavatelství, 1963), which lists three other works for violoncello and piano. In an apparent attempt to adapt his first name to the French language, the composer spells it "Albert" on the title. The unorthodox spelling of his last name, "H imali," is also found in other autograph manuscripts, such as those at the National Museum, Prague. From a Czech family of musicians—his brother Jan was a professor of violin at the Moscow Conservatory and friend of Tchaikovsky—"H ímalý. studied the violin with Moris Mildner at the Prague Conservatory (1855–61), after which he became the orchestral leader in Rotterdam (1861) and Göteborg (1862) and then returned to Prague. In 1874 he left Bohemia to become director of the Philharmonic in Czernowitz, Bukovina (now Chernovtsy, Ukraine). Most of his large output was left in manuscript, but his opera Zakletý princ (‘The Enchanted Prince’) remained in the repertory of the Provisional Theatre [in Prague] after its production in 1872 and his Violin Concerto was often played by František Ond í ek. Another opera, Švanda dudák (‘Schwanda the Bagpiper’), was produced in Plze in 1896; he also wrote incidental music, songs, choruses and a requiem, chamber music and teaching manuals." John Tyrrell in Grove Music Online. Oblong folio (336 x 262 mm.). Unbound. [i] (title), 2-9 pp. Notated in black ink on pre-printed 9-stave music paper specifically designed for music for a melody instrument with piano (groups of three staves, with the lower two closer to each other).Manuscript annotations to title in pencil in an unidentified hand: "(Gothenburg)" immediately below the composer's name; "8/63 durch C.         Fifteen letters and drawings by Charlotte's Web illustrator Garth Williams to his daughters Jessica and Estyn, 1962-1968; 5 TLS, 2 ALS and 4 birthday cards with drawings to Jessica, 1 TLS to Estyn, and 3 TLS to both; together with 4 ink drawings: "Yoo Hoo?Tarzan!", "Estyn's Shadow," "Jessicat," and "My favourite Bottles."

      - GARTH WILLIAMS: LETTERS TO HIS DAUGHTERS. Together with: 3 black and white snapshots of new wife Alicia and son Juan Miguel; 1" x 2" each. During this period, Williams was living in Guanajuato, Mexico with Alicia and their Juan Miguel. He signed his letters "Papá," "Garth," or in one instance, "Sam Crabgrass." Williams sends updates about his health, work and travel schedule, shares anecdotes about his childhood, and, most frequently, expels fatherly advice (especially to the younger Jessica). He often writes rhyming or nonsensical sentences, and in one letter, writes phonetically in a Cockney accent ("Ow's me ole chum?" July 1, 1963). Jessica and Estyn were both teenagers during this time. In his first letter, Williams sends a brief description of his new wife - thirty years his junior - and son, "She was born in Guanajuato in 1942 on Oct. 24th. Alicia. Alice in english. She is 5 foot 3 inches tall. weight 100 lbs. Dark brown eyes, black hair. Her son is Juan Miguel. He is 6 months old now" (June 5, 1962). Williams sends letters filled with fatherly advice, and sometimes shares stories about his boyhood. In one letter to Jessica, Williams informs her about boys: I see from recent letters you have written that perhaps you will be like everyone else, and get mixed up with other people; not just girls, but even with those horrible creatures - boys. When you get mixed up with boys, you often get mixed with girls, and mixed up altogether; because it is like measles-of-the-brain, or, mumps-of-the-thumper (heart). (February 20, 1963) He goes on to share a long anecdote about when he has his first clash of the sexes - at age 10 - with two neighborhood girls named Betty and Pat, who were sisters, and concludes with the realization that "When you feel love (which you may not be) - no advice is any good, even when you know it is good advice), and suggests that Estyn maybe able to help her too. A couple months later, Williams writes a similar letter to Estyn, though this time, his advice is about morals: "You have to work out a code to live by, when you are living by your rules you can say you are being moral. When not - immoral or unmoral" (April 29, 1963). He also tells Estyn that morals change, and that "What USED to be bad is now OK," and gives the following example: My mother did all the wrong things. She smoked a pipe, rode a bicycle, wore bloomers, and ended up being chained to the railings in Hyde Park with a Mrs Pankhurst when they wanted to get the right to vote for women etc etc. Most people considered her unmoral in her behaviour. She was an art student in Paris for five years; - pretty dreadful? (ibid.) In a long undated letter to Jessica, Williams responds to her questions about God, admitting, "I don't know any more than you do" (n.d.). The explains that the topic is vast and unknowable, but suggests studying about religion and recommends that she read Santayana. It is clear that sometimes Williams masks his concern with humor, or downplays serious discussions. When he found out that Jessica had started smoking, he wrote her explaining how her genes make the habit especially dangerous for her: My reason for warning you is - you inherit from your mother the same tendencies. See a doctor about it. Have him check you for bad circulation. People with bad circulation cant smoke. They feel colder than everyone else. Their fat does not help. They are lousy bed fellows with far too many covers and icy feet" (May 4, 1967). He suggests that Jessica "Take peppermint, Brighton Rock, Kandy Kisses, Humbugs Lollypops - anything. Create a new craze - eating candy instead of smoking. Create a distinctive image - the girl who chews lemon rind. Unique" (ibid.). Williams's drawings usually illustrate something about Jessica or Estyn, or something that Williams had seen. His card to Jessica for her October 1964 birthday shows her sleeping in bed, with a full stomach and a candle stuck in her belly-button, a pair of elaborate red boots discarde [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Centaur

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1963. First. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with a few very tiny tears. Winner of the National Book Award. Inscribed by the author: "for Herb Yellin, this ancient text with affection and esteem, John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association and a nicer than usual copy. .

I VANGELI SECONDO MATTEO, MARCO, LUCA, GIOVANNI.

        A Sense of Reality.

London: The Bodley Head, 1963. Author's own signed copy, with letter. First Edition. Octavo. Bound in publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine. Stylized dust wrapper shows titles against an abstract green and black background to front cover, titles in black to spine, with publisher's advertisement to rear cover; unclipped, originally priced 35s.Binding shows minor shelfwear. Dust wrapper equally bright, with trivial rubbing and one small tear to upper. Autographed on title-page, with accompanying statement signed by Greene on headed letter of literary scholar R.A. Gekoski, certifying that this copy was the author's 'own personal file copy, and bears [his] ownership signature'. This is a selection of four short stories, in which Greene experiments with a somewhat more expressionist mode of writing. The stories are preoccupied with dreams, and are thematically in keeping with Greene's novel-length studies of darker psychological and social tension. It represents the author's only fantasy collection, the final story 'A Discovery In the Woods', being Greene's only attempt at science fiction.

Typed Letter, signed to Robert Wilson, American bookseller and collector, identifying "Effie" as the heroine of Theodor Fontane's EFFIE BRIEST

Ussy-sur-Marne [France], 1963. One page typed on onionskin paper. 1 vols. 4to (10-1/2 x 7-1/2 inches). Slightly wrinkled, and a little ragged at edges. One page typed on onionskin paper. 1 vols. 4to (10-1/2 x 7-1/2 inches). "Very cordial greetings to Edward Albee". In Beckett's 1958 play, Krapp's Last Tape, Krapp related "Scalded the eyes out of me reading Effi again, a page a day, with tears again." In this letter to Robert Wilson of the Phoenix Bookshop, Beckett explains the reference. "Dear Mr. Wilson ... Effie is the heroine of Effie Briest [underlined], the most famous novel of the German writer Theodor Fontane (1819-98). I understand an English version is now available, perhaps slightly abridged, published by New English Library (Four Square classics) and translated by Walter Wallich. Very cordial greetings to Edward Albee." In his LETTERS, Vol. 2, Beckett writes, "I read it for the fourth time the other day with the same old tears in the same old places.".

I VANGELI SECONDO MATTEO, MARCO, LUCA, GIOVANNI

Verona, Officina Bodoni, 1963.
