        Buildings, Plans, and Designs

1963 - WRIGHT, Frank Lloyd. Buildings, Plans, and Designs. New York: Horizon, (1963). Large folio (16 by 25-1/2 inches), 100 loose plates as issued in original half black cloth portfolio with ribbon ties, accompanying text in original self-wrappers; original corrugated shipping carton. $4500.First edition in English of Frank Lloyd Wright's first major publication, number 174B of 2600 copies""a grand portfolio of one hundred large folio plates of Wright's earliest designs, including the Frederick C. Robie house (1909), "the finest of the Prairie houses."The first period of Wright's career "was one of bold invention and public acclaim. It reached its climax in 1910 with the [German] publication of his architectural drawings in an extraordinary pair of portfolios." The young architect had come to Europe in 1909, invited by the German publisher Wasmuth and Professor Kuno Francke for the purpose of a cultural and "artistic interchange" (Sweeney, xv-xx). Buildings, Plans and Designs remained for many years virtually unknown in America, because a fire in 1914 had destroyed, not only Wright's home at Taliesin, but also that portion of the 1910 printing intended for American distribution. Wright authorized the publication of this edition in 1958, just a year before his death. Included are designs for 70 buildings and projects between 1893 and 1909, including the W.H. Winslow house (1893), the Unity Temple at Oak Park (1906) and the Frederick C. Robie house (1909), which "has generally been regarded as the finest of the Prairie Houses" (Roth, 463). "Entire schools of architectural design and thought were in many cases founded on individual buildings or ideas presented in this folio" (Sweeney). Despite Wright's popularity and the number of intervening years, this American edition is preceded only by the German-language editions and an extremely scarce Japanese translation. Sweeney 87.         Photograph

1963 - (KENNEDY, Jacqueline) SHAW, Mark. Gelatin silver print. New York: Mark Shaw, 1963. Black-and-white photographic print, measuring 13-1/2 by 9 inches. Handsomely matted and framed, entire piece measures 22 by 18 inches. $6800.Vintage photographic print depicting Jackie Kennedy walking along the Georgetown canal. Bears Shaw's own studio stamp and "Private Print" on verso.Photographed during the last weeks before the presidential election in 1959, this image was evidently printed by photographer Mark Shaw in 1963, most likely in preparation for his book, The John F. Kennedys. The gelatin silver print shows Jackie Kennedy on one of the regular late morning walks she took along the Georgetown canal after JFK left for the Senate Office Building. "Just as Abraham Lincoln thought Mathew Brady's photography won him the presidency, so Jackie Kennedy thought Mark Shaw's pictures helped her husband win the 1960 election. "˜They really should be in the National Gallery!' she enthused". Shaw was very much a part of Camelot and his most famous still photography is associated with that period" (Sullivan, 492). Shaw began his career as a fashion photographer for publications including Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle, and LIFE Magazine. His talent for discovering new designers and trends caught the eye of Jackie Kennedy, who was growing increasingly visible as the wife of a senator and who was already on her way to becoming a style icon. In 1959, seeking to bolster JFK's presidential campaign, the Kennedys agreed to let Shaw have unrestricted access to their home and lives in order to do a photo-essay for LIFE called A Frontrunner's Wife. Shaw proved unintrusive, managing to take extraordinary candid shots that Jackie compared to the work of Caravaggio. Shaw quickly became a family friend and was a frequent guest in the Kennedy home. Allowed complete access to the family, Shaw began to take photographs of the Kennedys in Georgetown and in Washington; on vacation in Hyannis Port and elsewhere; and even in the White House once JFK was elected President. In 1964, the year after this print was produced, the image appeared as a half-tone in The John F. Kennedys, a photobook that Shaw compiled just after JFK's assassination for Farrar, Straus as a tribute to the family he had grown to love. After JFK died, Shaw became quite protective of the Kennedy prints and put together just five complete albums of the photographs used in the books to be given to four members of the Kennedy family and Dr. Max Jacobson, Kennedy's personal physician. As Shaw died unexpectedly in 1969 at the age of 47, Kennedy prints bearing his studio stamps are quite rare. Shaw studio stamp dated 1963 and "Private Print" stamp on verso. Red and black pencil and pen labeling and measurements on verso.Fine condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

      J. B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, PA 1963 - This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good+ to Near Fine- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. There is some light fading to the edges of the book covers at the top edge, and along the bottom spine end. The bottom edge of the front panel has some beginning glue residue from a previous dust jacket protector. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket has some beginning edge tears and nicks, some beginning wrinkling to the top front panel and top rear panel. There is only a hint of fading to the spine of the dust jacket. This is a First Edition, First State dust jacket with no reviews on real panel and a $5.95 price on the bottom corner of the front flap. This book was the winner of the Faulkner Foundation Award for best first novel of the year. "This will almost certainly be the most original novel published in 1963. It is a wild, macabre tale of the twentieth century and of two men." "Hailing from Long Island, Pynchon served two years in the United States Navy and earned an English degree from Cornell University. After publishing several short stories in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he began composing the novels for which he is best known: V. (1963) , The Crying of Lot 49 (1966) , Gravity's Rainbow (1973) , and Mason & Dixon (1997). Pynchon is also notoriously reclusive; very few photographs of him have ever been published, and rumors about his location and identity have circulated since the 1960s." More than two decades' worth of organizational and motivational periodicals from the metaphysical self-help group, or semi-religious fraternal order, of The Mayans, based in San Antonio, Texas. The group was created in the 1930s by William Perry "Koran" Taylor (d. 1953) and his wife Anna Morofsky "Rose Dawn" Taylor (b. 1957). These issues seem to represent their hey-day, although the organization is said to still maintain an office and generate publications. Each issue presents essays and lessons for the members to follow. Successful completion of tasks helps the member advance by degrees within the order. Three special supplementary issues from 1944 are also included here, as is a stack of additional circulars, holiday meditations, and random correspondence from the organization across the same time period. A rare find.

        Simulacri de la morte

Milano , ALL'INSEGNA DEL PESCE D'ORO, Serie incisioni originali 1963 - Dieci silografie originali numerate e firmate a matita (cm 6,6x5,6). Introduzione di Pier Carlo Santini. 24mo. pp. 16 + incisioni. . Ottimo (Fine). . Edizione originale di 60 + A-E es. numerati. . On Her Majesty's Secret Service (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape 1963 [actually issued September 1962] - PROOF copy in softcovers. Pp.288. Some rubbing to joints, wrinkling to spine as usual, light edgewear and faint soiling to upper. A much better copy than usually encountered- for a proof, this is very good indeed, housed in a morocco-spined clamshell box. The text features numerous changes to the published text, and "has more errors and required more amendments than any other Fleming title" Gilbert, p.354. both in terms of careless composition and poor spelling, as well as larger changes in text or resetting of passages. Published in 1963, this is the second part of a collection of James Bond books that has become known as the 'Blofeld' trilogy, sitting between Thunderball (1961) and You Only Live Twice (1964). The title was filmed by Eon Productions in 1969, starring George Lazenby as 007, Diana Rigg as Tracy and Telly Savalas as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Directed by Peter Hunt, with a terrific storyline and slick script from the ever-reliable screenwriter Richard Maibaum, O.H.M.S.S. features superb action, spectacular locations, a marvelous John Barry score, and, in Contessa Teresa de Vicenzo (aka Tracy, aka Mrs James Bond), probably the greatest Bond Girl of all time. The movie, unlike most in the series, was faithful to the original Ian Fleming novel and is a fine thriller; one of the grittiest movies of the series.         Photographs

1963 - CARTIER-BRESSON, Henri. Photographs. New York: Grossman, 1963. Small quarto, original blue cloth, original photographic dust jacket. $1200.First edition of this memorable Cartier-Bresson monograph, with 47 finely screened photogravure plates representing striking images from three decades, this association copy signed by photographer Margery Lewis Smith, longtime partner of W. Eugene Smith, the renowned photojournalist who in 1958 was named one of "the world's ten greatest photographers," together with Cartier-Bresson and others."Regarded by the French as a national treasure, mentioned as a touchstone in almost every article in the popular photographic press, emulated by legions of photographers, Cartier-Bresson has delighted and informed millions with his photographs" (Claude Cookman). "He has a special interest in photographing people and in capturing the essence of what has not previously been seen. He is famous for his theory of the "'decisive moment'-that is seizing the split second when the subject stands revealed in its most significant aspect". Today he ranks as one of the most important and influential photographers of this century" (Blodgett, 96). This wonderful retrospective selection of his work reflects his continual "search for the harmony and balance manifested in all events; he photographed to find the "'transcendent' order that links all cultures, all nations, and all historical moments" (Roth, 20). With essays by Lincoln Kirstein and Beaumont Newhall. Signed by Margery Lewis Smith, a photographer featured in Steichen's 1955 Family of Man exhibit and the longtime partner of famed photographer W. Eugene Smith. In 1958 Eugene Smith was named one of "the world's ten greatest photographers"-together with Cartier-Bresson, Avedon, Ansel Adams and others.Plates fine, light occasional underlining to text; one bit of tape reinforcement to bright original dust jacket.         Thrilling Cities.

Jonathan Cape, London, 1963 - First Impression, First State. DEDICATION COPY, signed by the author. Pp.223. Publisher's cloth-backed marbled paper over boards, titled in gilt to the spine, black endpapers, top edge stained black. With the pictorial dust-jacket designed by Paul Davis. Illustrated with photographic plates, and with erratum slip tipped in at page 223. Boards lightly rubbed and bumped at extremities; a very good copy, housed in a black quarter morocco clamshell box made by The Chelsea Bindery. The dedication copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, To / "a man called 'CD' "/ from / Ian. / (underscore). The printed author's note reads "Nothing remains but to dedicate this biased, cranky but at least zestful hotchpotch to my friends and colleagues on The Sunday Times in London and abroad, and particularly to a man called 'CD', who pulled the trigger". Sir Charles Denis Hamilton was a close friend and colleague of Ian Fleming, a director of Kemsley Newspapers and editor of the Sunday Times. Fleming had written seven James Bond novels when he was approached by Hamilton with a plum journalistic assignment: to take a five-week, all-expenses-paid trip to visit the world's most exciting cities. Fleming's trip took in Hong Kong, Macau and Tokyo, then Honolulu, and back home via the major US cities. The material he gathered for this book also furnished much of the backdrop and research for the five Bond novels and seven short stories that would follow. Gilbert A16a (1.1), see also pages 479 and 644. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
